Tech Note: Auto-Posting LGF Pages to Twitter with LGF Connect

Going API
LGF • Views: 37,041

We have a brand new feature tonight in LGF Pages, something I mentioned as “coming soon” in the previous Tech Note: auto-posting to Twitter, by linking your LGF account to your Twitter account.

Background: one of the groovy things you can do with Twitter is to give third party “apps” access to your account, so they can post updates, see your list of followers, and do other stuff, all without ever having to reveal your password. And if you don’t like what a third party app does with this permission, you can easily revoke its access to your account.

Now LGF Pages takes advantage of this capability, to let you automatically post a tweet whenever you post a new LGF Page.

Enabling this new feature is simple: go to your LGF Account Settings, where you will observe a new section with a button labeled “Connect to Twitter.” Click that bad boy and Twitter will open in a pop-up window, where you can grant our Twitter application (called “LGF Connect”) access to your Twitter account.

(Important note: as mentioned above, you can revoke access for LGF Connect at any time in your Twitter settings; go to the Applications tab and click the “Revoke Access” button for LGF Connect, and it’s done. There’s also an option to “Disconnect” in your LGF account settings, but this does not revoke privileges, it just deletes our access codes. Only Twitter can revoke the access privileges; there’s no way to do that with their API.)

After you authorize LGF Connect to post to Twitter, you’ll see a couple of new options in the LGF Pages posting form — a checkbox that lets you determine whether or not auto-tweet happens, and an input field for any Twitter hashtags you feel like adding.

It’s all automatic from there; the URL of your LGF Page is automatically shortened using our lgf.bz shortener, and the title of the Page becomes the text of the tweet. You should be mindful of your title’s length — the auto-tweet code truncates titles more than 100 characters to try to avoid going over Twitter’s 140-character limit.

Would anyone have good hashtag suggestions? Or a reference?

Re-posting:

I'm amazed at all the features we have here that we get to use free of charge. All we have to do is basically not be an asshole.

Those of you who use LGF regularly who don't have an LGF subscription need to really really think about doing the subscription thing - a mere $10/month. It's amazingly reasonable considering you basically have your very own blog-within-the-blog.

Very nice, especially the option on whether or not to auto-tweet and the hashtags. Thanks, Charles!

LOL. Who makes those things anyway? Do users just start them or does twitter do that? I'm such a light twitter user, never got into the getter features.

re: #1 Rightwingconspirator

Think of them as being like the tags you put at the bottom of your pages. They can be whatever you want, but you can always see what others are posting by searching for a hashtag—say #photography—from the search box at the top of your Twitter page.

It was started by users and is still done solely by users.

I've sorta stopped using the #tcot hashtag myself, because there's so much ugliness in that stream.

How about #CluelessTweets?

Earlier today I tweeted:

Man, building an armature out of wire, aluminum foil, and masking tape is not nearly as easy as it looks on YouTube.

About 2 hours later a lizard said I should retweet that to the Shrieking Harpy and send her into paroxysms of gin-fueled paranoi. I just sat there *blinking* with NO CLUE what was being referred to, then it s-l-o-w-l-y dawned on me: aramture, wires, muslim, ELEVENTY!1!! *facepalm*

Booyah! My latest science stuff order is in. A lot of what I got is basic, like spring scales and a couple new tuning forks, but I'm all excited about my spectroscope analysis kit. You make four different types of salt solution and soak some splints in the solution, then burn them. The spectroscope will show a different spectrum for each solution.

The point is that they use spectrum analysis to figure out what's in stars, so you're doing something like that.

This is going to be fun. Let's burn stuff!

Sounds wonderful. Eleventy billion years ago, I used to regularly receive in the mail a catalog (the name of which I tragically can't remember) offering stuff that was obviously intended for hardcore nerd kids. You could get things like prepared slides of various things intended to be viewed under the microscope that it was assumed you had in your bedroom; a huge variety of mechanical puzzles; and many other things. The only thing equally cool in my 10 year-old estimation was the Johnson-Smith catalog.

I was going to buy a pair of sandals recently, but my wife decided that since I can't stand sandals with that strap that goes between my big toe and the index toe; she got me to get shoes that you don't wear socks with.

They are not sandals. She caught me one day wearing them with socks; and was taken aback. Really?

The issue was that this wasn't something inspired by her writing, or fanfic, or anything. They had simply taken her work, alphabetized and indexed it, and that was not okay with her. As a website, she didn't have a problem with it, but as a book she did.

Zedushka will continue to visit the podiatrist. He is just too embarrassed to go to a pedicure salon.

Tell him that a lot of men do it these days. The right supports the crackdown in Baharain because we think the alternative is the 5th Fleet evicted, Iran's influence expanded, and our oil supply endangered. If preventing that entails turning blind eye to the actions of Baharain's rulers, then for now that's simply the price that must be paid.

My lily white skin got turned bright red and I got too much heat so I've been nauseous and headachy all day, but I was successful and I didn't have to open it up again to correct any mistakes.

Not a war, but rather a prevention of a war. A war between Iran and Saudi Arabia that started with Iran already having a bridgehead would not end well for the Saudis. The Iranians tend to be better soldiers (because they tend to train better, largely for cultural reasons), and Iran is a real nation, in a way Saudi Arabia is not.

Bhuiyan believes that his attacker does not deserve to die and has created a website, worldwithouthate.org, to urge Texas to spare Stroman's life.

"In order to live in a better and peaceful world, we need to break the cycle of hate and violence. I believe forgiveness is the best policy, which helps to break this cycle," he said, calling himself a victim of a hate crime. "I forgave Mark Stroman many years ago. I believe he was ignorant and not capable of distinguishing between right and wrong. Otherwise he wouldn't have done what he did."

Bhuiyan traveled this month to Paris to urge the European Parliament to step in and file a formal request for Texas to commute Stroman's sentence to life in prison.

Off topic, but I would likely detail statements I've said about tension between Bangladesh and India. While they have both done things to tick each other off, the majority of dick moves have been by the Indian Government, or parties therein. An example below about the Hindutva BJP on their foreign policy.

The BJP and its supporters feel India must remain vigilant against threats from Pakistan, the People's Republic of China, and elsewhere such as Bangladesh.

Who and what army? Seriously, Bangladesh has massive issues, and has some amount of internal problems at all time, and frequently spends 4-5 years to recover from Tropical Cyclone strikes. They get a bad one roughly every ten years. They cannot project power or threaten India. Simple as that. India can challenge China, and probably win. India is a step or two ahead of China tech-wise, and Bangladesh is somehow going to threaten them?

And then this:

There was a minor glitch in their relation when Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accidentally mentioned that 25% of Bangladeshis are anti indian, during an informal press meet.

Really classy to say. Of course you are going to piss off Bangladesh.

My dream is to see the fusion of India and Bangladesh. This will moderate India, and permanently cripple the BJP.

A good portion of the way Iran is today is because of dickish actions we did there, and support for a very nasty despot.

The longer we support these kind of people, the angrier the people of that nation will get. And eventually, they will get to a point where they will hurt us and our interests in the region.

Cut them off now, and there is still a chance they will not fall in completely in line with Iran. Wait, and our future hand gets worse.

However, my internet connection is, as described by experts, utter shit, so I can't actually see it. But I have seen it in the past, so I am reasonably certain that my point is solid.

Oh I don't doubt you at all. Just saying I don't remember that.

I used to know a couple Hindutva guys, from online stuff. Nicest guys to talk to in the world. Just suuuuuuuuper crazy. A lot like talking to Fundagelicals here, on certain topics.

Nah. This guy was convicted, no doubt, but I want him in a hole for the rest of his natural life. There is a chance he isn't guilty (despite all evidence). We have already killed too many innocent people in this state.

I had had a High-Caste Hindu for a roommate at the college apartments 2 years ago.

He was an entitled jackass. Me and the other guy had to clean up for him all the time. Also believed that people don't need government assistance for college if they are poor, and was anti-dalit.

Eventually, I got angry enough at him that I started using his beloved social status in India (He was Brahmin to be specific) as a personal insult.

Are you familiar with Warren Ellis's Planetary comic series?

He wrote a special issue in which the Planetary team met Batman -- and shifts in time/space caused them to meet various incarnations of Batman as he's been presented over the years, from the 60's TV series hero (who uses Bat-Female-Villain-Repellant) to the Frank Miller

Dark Knight Returns

Batman to the Bob Kane Batman of the 30's.

Your poster immediately reminded me of that story. Any idea where it's from?

Yeah, a good friend of mine and off/on former roommate is a Dixit (tip top of the Brahmins). He was just the opposite, politically and in his personal life.

I'm mildly familiar with the last name. The story of a little girl named Suruchi Dixit-Rattan was one of the first things to help me gain my anger against Qaddafi. Story below:

Five members of the Dixit-Rattan family, including 3-year-old Suruchi Rattan, were flying to Detroit from New Delhi. They were supposed to be on PA67, which had left Frankfurt earlier in the day, but one of the children had fallen ill with breathing difficulties, and the pilot had taken the plane back to the gate to allow the family to disembark. The boy soon recovered, and the family was transferred to PA103 instead. Suruchi was wearing a bright red kurta and salwar—a knee-length tunic and matching trousers—for her journey. She became associated with a note left with flowers outside Lockerbie town hall:

To the little girl in the red dress who lies here who made my flight from Frankfurt such fun. You didn't deserve this. God Bless, Chas.

When I read this on Wikipedia, the first time, my eyes welled up. Now with me being able to express emotions about things outside of myself better (I think my Autism is weakening), I start crying.

Morning Honcos.

283 King of the Douche, now you may bow  Sun, Jul 17, 2011 2:43:48am

While this story is sad, a couple things come to mind:

SAFETY HARBOR — Eric Schnetzer of Tampa, an athletic 40-year-old, loved to surf, windsurf, kayak and ride water scooters. But there was another challenge he itched to try: riding motorcycles.

First problem. Don't "try". In Florida, you really need to know what you're doing when on a bike. There are times during the week where there are fewer people on the road. Get comfy with your machine.

Within a week, Schnetzer was dead.

Could this have been prevented?

Schnetzer was not wearing a helmet. After he died, his mother, Angela Kendall, said she found two "sticky notes" at his home reminding him to order one.

Good intentions and all that.

Kendall said she would like to see a state law requiring helmets, because her son would not have broken the law.

Uh, we had a law. They took it to the voters. Now, it is optional to wear a helmet. You don't get ticketed for actually wearing a helmet.
As sad as this is, this guy had a choice. He was obviously a smart man. But inexperience + disregarding safety lead to his death.

Ayep, aka legal slavery. Once you've gotten good enough at all the jobs in the place that you can sub on short notice, they slap a "manager" tap on your nametag, put your name on the short list for "emergencies" (aka whenever another employee gets fed up and quits), and bully your ass into a cheap-ass salary with no benefits and no real future. If your shop has a high turn-over rate, especially night shifts, then it's not surprising to work for weeks on end with "emergencies" cropping up every time you're scheduled for a day off.

And it's all perfectly legal, because no state that I'm aware of has a law on the books saying how many consecutive days a salaried worker can work before they are mandated time off. Hell, even then, I'm sure that the franchise owners would argue that because they're "emergencies" and not scheduled work days, they don't count as consecutive.

Yeah, that sounds familiar. Both my folks did 20+ yr hitches as enlisted in the Navy. One of my favorite stories from my old man is about the time he got a no-notice deployment order for what, at the time, was supposed to be only three weeks. Said deployment was for Operation El Dorado Canyon, which meant three weeks ended up turning into almost 6 months. And not only was he doing his job as a jet mech, but was also pulling hours on the flight decks.

'course, I think that's bad, then I remember the boys in the Army and Marines, doing 12+ month stretches out in the "beauty" that is Iraq or Afghanistan. *shakes his head*

I've seen some really bad bosses. One of my customers owns a trucking company. (Hint: Largest private/non-union trucking company in the US) I was helping put up a new depot and he did a walk-through..."I hate this, I hate that, I hate you, you suck, and fix that". Everybody just nods there heads, tells him "no problem" and goes about their business after he leaves. It cracked me up.

During the first gulf war I went months on 4 hours of sleep a night. You get used to it after awhile. Sometimes "you gotta do what you gotta do".

On a related note, that kids boss sounds like an asshole. I've been very, very lucky. I've never had a bad boss ever.

Yeah, I wasn't so lucky on my first job. Ended up with three, four if you count the one who got promoted after I started working there. Every day I worked, they gave me shit about company policy this, company policy that, until one day I threw it back in their face when I pointed out that the reason I took so long on one task was because their preferred way was itself against company policy. Final straw came when I found out that the promised 6 month review was, in fact, a 12 month review. And then, to add insult to injury, even if you did get a few cents raise, it didn't start showing up on your paycheck until the district manager came in and approved the raise, which meant another 3-6 months waiting time.

Verizon FiOS. Well, I can't really blame Verizon, as I was working for a middle-man company who was simply selling the product. But they kept pushing the "value over cost" mantra, which sounds great if you're a motivational speaker, but not so great when you're trying to convince tight-fisted folks that paying $20+ more a month is a great deal.

Yeah, I ran into a lot of those folks, ones who either had no landline or kept one just to have a home phone number for various applications/forms/etc. Don't remember the last time I used our home phone for anything. I don't even really list it on applications anymore, just put my cellphone number as my primary. We've even turned off the ringer, just because every charity and hard-luck case was calling us at all hours of the night.

Virginia, so I know about the necessity of having a landline in case of hurricanes. One of the good things about Verizon FiOS is that they install an 8-hr backup battery for the landline, so that you can still make calls if the power dies. Though, if we ever have a hurricane roll through that's powerful enough to take down the cell towers, having functioning landlines will be the least of our concerns.

Last time we lost power for more than a day was when Isabel rolled through in '03. We had a neighbor's welding generator to use for a few items, like the freezer and TV, but had to spend two days in 90+ degree heat without A/C. Why? Because some idjit didn't decide to inform Dominion Power of the line that had gone down in his front yard.

Yeah, we've contemplating the same thing here, mostly because even on a perfectly cloudless day, we can lose power for hours at a stretch. No warning, just dies and doesn't come back for hours. Or, worse, we'll lose power for 15 minutes, get it back for five, and then have it die again. And this will go on for a couple hours, before finally staying on.

351 lawhawk  Sun, Jul 17, 2011 6:05:45am

The News Corp scandal is not going to go away, and no amount of compensation and apologies from Murdoch is going to help. Heads will roll- and when he goes before the British MPs on Tuesday, expect him to get grilled. There are calls for change in British media ownership rules to limit how much any one company can own.

But perhaps more seriously is the way that Scotland Yard covered for News Corp and the hacking scandal. Heads have to roll, and it shows that the police were more than willing to engage in criminality to further a journalistic agenda pushed by Murdoch's companies.

When you have as many top officials resigning and/or being arrested throughout Murdoch's media companies, you can't claim that this was an isolated incident with just a few rogue journalists involved. Top people knew about this, and either were condoning the actions (Brooks?), or engaged in the coverup (that would be Hinton).

This scandal is growing out of Murdoch's control, and has taken on a life of its own.

Thing is, unless somebody's sitting on a pile of paperwork with his signature on it, backed up by audiovisual proof, then he'll likely get away with it. Some may be willing to roll, feeling they've been sold out, but at the end of the day he'll just say that he never personally knew what was going on and it'll be their word against his. As for the rest, omerta will set in, keeping lips silent for fear of reprisal. The big fish will fry, but the biggest fish will get away simply due to a lack of evidence.

If those emails were done on the US side after SOX (and I think the time period at News Corp meets that), and were destroyed, we've got a whole different ballgame. Section 802(a) of the SOX, 18 U.S.C. § 1519 provides criminal sanctions for "... altering, destroying, mutilating, concealing, covering up, falsifiying, or making a false entry in any record, document, or tangible object with the intent to impede, obstruct, or influence the investigation or proper administration of any matter within the jurisdiction of any department or agency of the United States or any case filed under title 11, or in relation to or contemplation of any such matter or case, shall be fined under this title, imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both."

Destroying emails and or hindering investigations is a criminal offense, and the sanctions are steep.

The problem is: Where would they go after using them? It would be like calling artillery down on your own position. Yes, you'd gut News Corp, but since you initially participated in the illegal actions (or and least knew and did nothing till later) who will hire you in the business after that? The Feds would give you immunity, to be sure, but the public (potential employers) would look at you in the same light as they would Sammy the Bull, a rat who turned on his boss to avoid prison time.

366 lawhawk  Sun, Jul 17, 2011 6:46:34am

Toughest ticket in NYC looks like it will be at the 9/11 memorial. The 9/11 Memorial set up a ticketing/reservation system to limit the number of people at any one time to 1,500 people on site due to the ongoing construction throughout the surrounding area, but they've quickly run out; and multiple tour companies have swooped in to obtain many of the time slots - and they're charging for access as part of their tours or as standalone items.

This goes against the very spirit of the memorial and these companies are charging for access to the site at a time when the memorial and museum are complaining that they need millions of dollars to secure the opening and for operating costs for years to come. Some of the tour companies got the tickets in a deal to reduce traffic and congestion around Lower Manhattan - to reduce dwell times at stops, and other efforts to reduce pollution and traffic, but it means that if you want to see the memorial, your best option now appears to be buying a ticket through one of these outfits, rather than directly getting the tickets for free.

Murdoch and son could be next. Brooks may try to take the fall for them but eventually somebody isn't going to want jailtime. Somebody's going to talk eventually.

Why would she willingly take the fall? If she and her lawyers think they and wring a deal for spilling the beans on the operation, she'll take it - and I think with more people getting arrested, the chances for people taking deals to spill the beans becomes much better. It may well become a race to see who cuts a deal first to avoid being hit hard by prosecutors down the line.

And prosecutors will have to pick and choose who gets deals, and who gets hammered - and who they'll set as examples for everyone else.

Money, or at least the possibility of money. Murdoch has many outlets through which he could pay someone off, many of which wouldn't be illegal. But cutting a deal would leave you truly adrift. Might be better to just do your time and firewall the boss.

I pay a neighbor to mow my postage stamp lawn.

Reminds me

I have to go buy a push mower for part of my front lawn

Frakkin county did a road project in that included regrading the street in front of my house. They had to re-slope 15 feet from the curb towards my house to the yard would slope down to the 'new" street at the proper grade

When they were done, they resodded that part of my front lawn. What they DIDN'T do was pack down the dirt before they put the new grass down, so after the winter the ground depressed in places making that part of the lawn like a roller coaster. Can't use the riding mower on it anymore! In some places, it scrapes all the grass off, in others, it leaves it about 8 inches high

It might be one of those Farmer's Almanac kinda things, but I was always told that mowing the lawn in the early hours was very bad for the grass. Supposedly, it's better to do it in the evening at dusk, after you've had 4 or 5 beers.

My riding mower has a cup holder. So,I'll agree.:) (it wasn't my lawn)

It's only "bad" if the grass is still damp from the nights dew OR if you mow it too low and it's going to be very hot and sunny out during the day

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp empire could face charges in America over phone hacking scandal after it was claimed that The News of the World hacked into Jude Law's phone while he was in the United States.

It is the first specific case of hacking on U.S. soil leaving the company open to prosecution under federal law.

Trivia: wasps in general react defensively to high-frequency vibrations, such as those emitted by gas trimmers.

Also, they are attracted to carbon dioxide, which you exhale. So every time you scream, they get just that much more turned on.

What's funny (and sad) is the attitude some Murdoch spokespeople (aka Fox News) seem to have about this - as if their position in society is so important because of their connections to political figures (all paid, mind you, but they don't get that point) are immune to US prosecution. Of course, if it turns out somebody at Fox used this technique - say Bill O'Reilly had one of his "producers" hack a phone, for example - suddenly they sing a new tune.

Time to call the magical balance fairy and dig up plagiarism stories from the NY Times, Keith Olbermann's campaign donations, etc. and make themselves feel better.

Some years ago, I found a hornet's nest that way; mostly. I was using a lawnmower, and we'd never trimmed the lower branches of the magnolia tree. So I was ducking under them (bouncing against them) while mowing.

I happen to have a fairly high pain tolerance. I noticed the hornets not from the pain of the stings but after, well, after I got dizzier and itchier. (Mowing in 90+ temps with basic power mower, I was already suffering.)

The visit to the emergency room that followed left me extremely aware of the problems inherent in modern US emergency rooms unless you're gushing blood.

That sounds about right to me. The grass is burnt all day by the sun which acts like a novocaine shot and thereby feeling no discomfort during the mowing process at dusk. *drink*

...Keeping mum seems not so dumb in the British workplace until you consider the consequences. The British banking system collapsed in 2008. Last week, we saw how Rupert Murdoch thanked the News of the World's staff for their loyal silence. He protected his compromised son and Rebekah Brooks by sacking the lot of them and closing their paper. Never in the history of British journalism have so many sacrificed so much for so few.

Mafia don lesson #1 Hire Bruce Kutler.

A Mafia godfather finds out that his bookkeeper has cheated him out of ten million bucks.

His bookkeeper is deaf.

That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that a deaf bookkeeper would not hear anything that he might have to testify about in court.

When the godfather goes to confront the bookkeeper about his missing $10 million, he brings along his attorney, who knows sign language.

The godfather tells the lawyer, “Ask him where the 10 million bucks he embezzled from me is.”

The attorney, using sign language, asks the bookkeeper where the money is.

The bookkeeper signs back, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”

The attorney tells the godfather, “He says he doesn’t know what you’re talking about.”

The godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to the bookkeeper’s temple, and says, “Ask him again!”

The attorney signs to the bookkeeper, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him!”

The bookkeeper signs back, “OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed in my cousin Enzo’s backyard in Queens!”

The godfather asks the attorney, “Well, what’d he say?”

The attorney replies, “He says you don’t have the guts to pull the trigger.”

No. Neither is bombing a certain method.

The US uses four "tools" for mine removal, and from what I've read they're what everyone else is limited to as well.

Method one, the oldest, consists of a soldier with a probe. Used to be bayonets were used, but that ended when magnetic fuzes began to be common. Now it's a non-magnetic spike -- a sharpened branch works well. Get on your hands and knees and push the probe in at a roughly 45 degree angle - gently, so if you hit the pressure plate you feel it before you trigger it (you hope). repeat this every three inches in a row across your front, move forward three inches, and repeat. It is the most certain method of clearing. It is also, obviously, the slowest.

The other three (mechanized) methods always miss a mine or two, but they're a lot faster. They're the plow, the roller, and the explosive.

The plow is a set of tines set in an angle, attached to the front of an armored vehicle, that turns the earth dumping mine-laden dirt to the side of the vehicle's path. Most of the mines go off in the turning. Because they're being pushed up and tilted most of the blast of those that go off goes into the air instead of into the plow, and the offset protects the vehicle even if the blast points at it. The path is clear. The row of dirt to the sides of the path is not so clear. The plow will be damaged and eventually destroyed.

The roller is just that - a big, heavy wheel (or set of wheels) that compresses the earth with enough weight to set off even heavy-trigger anti-tank mines. As with the mine plow the roller takes the blasts and will eventually be destroyed. While the mine's been bounced into the air it can jump over another mine, which is why some get missed. On the other hand you don't have to worry about one rolling off the berm at your side.

The last method is a linear explosive. (Bangalor Torpedos and miclics are both examples.) A tube or rope of explosive is set across the field and then exploded. It blasts a shallow trench, and most of the mines hit by the blast will sympathetically explode and/or be tossed to the side. Note that weasel word "most".

The old minesweeper /detector used magnetics to detect the metal casing of the mine. Most mines are predominately plastic these days. Add the previously mentioned magnetic fuzes and you can see why they're no longer used.

One device under development tries to detect molecules that have sublimed from the explosives. They work, they have major problems. The first problem is that on a battlefield there are a lot of those molecules. The second is that precision is not so good. We can sorta tell there is probably a minefield in 'this' area, but finding an actual mine before running over it? That's a little bit trickier.

(added before posting: I see while I was writing this a new thread came up. Still hope this is useful, so I'll post anyway.)
