Girl scouts!?! The same girl scouts who came out as (gasp!) neutral on abortion and gay rights? They're not patriotic, they're communists, obviously. A better alternative would be the God-fearing American Heritage Girls.

This really shows how stupid some people are.
They looked what they wanted to see. "All this for a flag" doesn't match the First Lade and the President body language in the clip. “Amazing how they fold that flag.” does.

Went to my Kids' Back to School night, and it seemed like only maybe 1/3 of the parents showed up. Left me feeling depressed. On the bright side, my older daughter's teacher says she's been making real progress with her IEP this year and seems to be catching up, so there is that.

In a Thursday letter, over 50 House Republicans, led by Rep. A “petition for a writ of certiorari” is a request for the Supreme Court to hear a case, so this stay lasts until the Court either decides Buck’s case on the merits or decides not to decide his case at all. As Marie Diamond reported earlier today, Buck, who is black, was sentenced to die after a psychologist testified that African-Americans are more likely to be violent.

But under cross-examination, Quijano acknowledged to prosecutors that certain factors are associated with violent crime. For instance, the prosecutor asked, "The race factor, black, increases the future dangerousness for various complicated reasons; is that correct?"
"Yes," Quijano replied.
The jury concluded that Buck, a black man, would continue to be violent, and sentenced him to death.

At one point, the prosecutor — without objection from Buck’s defense counsel — asked Dr. Quijano about his consideration of both race and sex as relevant factors in his future-dangerousness analysis, which led to the following exchange:
Q: You have determined that the sex factor, that a male is more violent than a female because that’s just the way it is, and that the race factor, black, increases the future dangerousness for various complicated reasons; is that correct?
A: Yes.

Thought it pretty fitting that such a non-troversy sparks up the day after the last one involving cries of "paranoia!" over Obama's campaign setting up a site devoted to debunking such bullshit accusations.
Yeah these people are the definition of paranoid. Really I just looked at the First Lady's face and it's clear as day that she's moved by the ceremony. I mean shit you can still disagree with someone politically without thinking they hate the country. A fact lost one those right wing bloggers who have a fantasy of the Obamas burning flags and laughing evilly and chanting in Arabic.

They say anyone can join, but the first half of their creed specifies the Triune God, which would also lock out all those who don't believe in Christ.
I suppose you could just ignore it. I've known atheists to just join Cub Scouts anyway. I was looking over the website, and I think they've softened a bit. When I looked into it when my daughter was much younger, I recall a strong statement that you had to accept the creed.

More Solyndra / solar energy business info:
Chinese cheaters? How China dominates solar
...snip...
Remarkably, even with all the pressure from China, the U.S. is a net exporter of solar products to the country. A new report issued by GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association shows that America had a $247 million solar trade surplus with China in 2010, mostly because of polysilicon and equipment shipments.
"Yeah, that's great. But we're just sending the raw materials and buying back the finished goods," explained Suniva's Bryan Ashley. "That's a going-out-of-business strategy. Pretty soon they'll figure out how to produce quality polysilicon and they'll be doing it all themselves. We need to re-learn how to make things in this country."

50: But Solyndra!
That's relevant for some purposes, but it does not impact on the Obamas directly. Its vanishingly unlikely Barack Obama had any involvement with the Solynda loans; He just praised them as part of his normal political activities. So it does reflect bad judgement on the part of relevant part of the executive branch to have loaned that money, but not on the Chief Executive himself.

Or a royal fuck-up from industrial agriculture:
The bacteria had been tested--as it turns out in a careless and very unscientific mannner--by scientists working for the biotech industry and was believed to be safe for the environment. Fortunately a team of independent scientists, headed by Dr. Elaine Ingham of Oregon State University, decided to run their own tests on the gene-altered Klebsiella planticola. What they discovered was not only startling, but terrifying--the biotech industry had created a biological monster--a genetically engineered microorganism that would kill all terrestrial plants.

That is a variation of Grey Ooze.
Self-replicating machines of the macroscopic variety were originally described by mathematician John von Neumann, and are sometimes referred to as von Neumann machines. The term grey goo was coined by nanotechnology pioneer Eric Drexler in his 1986 book Engines of Creation,[4] stating that "we cannot afford certain types of accidents."

Monster Puppy and Old Man dog started some male-oriented bantering about their respective rawhides.
Roughly translated I think it went something like:
Old Man Dog: My rawhide is bigger than yours.
Monster Puppy: You chew like a pussy.
Old Man Dog: Yeah, coming from someone who tries to hump his sister,
At that point, I took all the rawhides and put them on top of the fridge.
They are both quiet now.

True maybe disease isn't the best way of putting it but I do think racism at its base is about denial. If you deny a fellow human being's humanity then you can think the worst about them. I'd disagree with Condi on birth defect since I think it's something that is learned.

Was really unexpected because today was a normal late summer warm but not too hot Northern Virginia day but then when I went out to dinner and the movie it got cold fast. Just Russia as the course covers Russia from 1880-1930. The timing is perfect since 1881 is when the first truly violent pogroms occurred in the wake of the assassination of the Czar. That would be probably what I would have been looking for if I had taken the course on Nazi Germany. Went with the Russia one since I know the professor from taking his course on Modern Russia. I have written on the Holocaust before though. Wrote a paper about how the perception of hte Jewish people in WWII film has changed from the 1959 Diary of Anne Frank to films like Defiance. I for one love films that show the Jewish people fighting back with great courage against their oppressors. I always find myself as a non Jew asking myself if I would have had the courage to do the right thing (I mean I despise Anti-Semitism but it's hard to truly objectively answer that in the safety of a democracy and having never known any government even close to the Nazis ruling over me and my family.)

re: #236 prairiefire

I think it goes back to what I've called "objectifying" people or groups of people. When a group or person is viewed as "different", they are not considered as part of the group. "The Group" are US.
We have rights, We are normal, We are . . .
They are not We. They are viewed as "less than" We. Once a person or a group is defined as "less than" they are objectified. Literally seen or felt to be objects.
It makes rationalizing brutality so much easier on the human psyche. No need to feel guilt or responsibility . . . .
For Jews in history it has been exacerbated because they choose to keep themselves separated by their faith -- so they can be rationalized to 'WANT" to be "less than" and therefore deserving of whatever fate the "WE Group" dispenses.
Ugly stuff.

Ever seen a baby or toddler shy away from a person wearing glasses?
My son wouldn't go near my husband when he first started wearing glasses. He was afraid because he had never seen glasses. It was different from what he was used to.
Same happens when a child brought up in a "white only" environment sees a black person for the first time. They are leery --what is this?
How well the baby/child deals with the fear is a combination of their disposition and how the adults handle the situation.

I read the reviews of that book and was not impressed. Even Gary Willis found reason to go after Carroll. Christianity had a problem dealing with "the Other", especially Jews, but Carroll seemed to think that the solution was to do away with any type of exclusion at all. And that is not practical. It is entirely reasonable for believers of a religion to exclude non-believers from key decisions about what they believe. What they may not do is unjustly attack those who do not believe ("unjustly is a phrase that can be abused and often is, but it is needed as a qualifier).

Let me add that "natural" does not neccessarily translate into "good" or even just "desireable". For instance, it is natural that many children will bite others (see [Link: ceep.crc.uiuc.edu...] on this). If that kind of behavior persists, they must be taught to let go of it.

"Toddler shyness" is far broader than "race" and doesn't explain why some toddlers may be shy -- if that's even the proper term -- around some "races", but not others. White children afraid of Black children wasn't my example, btw. I think it was a bad one, and would not have used it.
