Cain: ‘Herman Is Going to Stay Herman’

Today, Herman Cain is desperately trying to brush off the report that he paid a large amount of money to two women to keep them quiet about charges that he sexually harassed them; he’s so upset he’s talking about himself in the third person: Cain Says ‘Herman Is Going to Stay Herman’ as Allegations Swirl.

“Yes, I was falsely accused while I was at the National Restaurant Association — and I say falsely because it turned out after the investigation to be baseless,” Cain said on Fox News on Monday morning, his first direct response to the question of whether he had been accused of harassment.

He added: “It is totally baseless and totally false. Never have I committed any sort of sexual harassment.”

Politico reported Sunday night that the association paid five-figure settlements to two women to settle their claims that Cain sexually harassed them.

But Cain claimed he had no knowledge of any settlements. “If the restaurant association did a settlement, I was not even aware of it,” he said. “And I hope it wasn’t for much, because I was not even aware of it.”

It’s pretty clear that he’s laying the groundwork for an eventual admission that the reports are true; he knows the settlements are going to come out, so he’s setting up the excuse that it happened without his knowledge.

Which is just laughable.

Rush made sure to start his show this morning letting everyone know the allegations were nothing but proof that the vast left wing media complex is racist.

Is anyone going to believe that? Seriously.

Elmo thinks this is a good idea.

Elmo thinks that all monsters should keep their hands to themselves.

Elmo thinks that maybe Sesame Street should do a special on how boys and girls should treat each other.

Setting aside the harassment issues, the financial chicanery in setting up his campaign in the first place might be the bigger scandal.

Herman Cain's two top campaign aides ran a private Wisconsin-based corporation that helped the GOP presidential candidate get his fledgling campaign off the ground by originally footing the bill for tens of thousands of dollars in expenses for such items as iPads, chartered flights and travel to Iowa and Las Vegas - something that might breach federal tax and campaign law, according to sources and documents.

Internal financial records obtained by No Quarter show that Prosperity USA said it was owed about $40,000 by the Cain campaign for a variety of items in February and March. Cain began taking donations for his presidential bid on Jan. 1.

Prosperity USA was owned and run by Wisconsin political operatives Mark Block and Linda Hansen, Cain's current chief of staff and deputy chief of staff, respectively.

The authenticity of the records was verified by two individuals close to the firm.

It is not known if Cain's election fund eventually paid back Prosperity USA, which now appears defunct. The candidate's federal election filings make no mention of the debt, and the figures in the documents don't match payments made by the candidate's campaign.

In addition to picking up these expenses at least initially, Prosperity USA also paid as much as $100,000 to the Congress of Racial Equality, a conservative black organization, shortly before Cain was a featured speaker at the group's annual Martin Luther King Jr. dinner in mid-January.

Cain, who has surged to a top-tier presidential candidate in the past month, apparently was not paid for the appearance. The personal financial disclosure forms for the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza list no honorariums for speeches.

Election law experts say the transactions raise a host of questions for the private organization, which billed itself as a tax-exempt nonprofit, and the Cain team.

"If the records accurately reflect what occurred, this is way out of bounds," said a Washington, D.C.-based election lawyer who advises many Republican candidates and conservative groups on campaign issues. The lawyer asked not to be identified because of those affiliations.

I report - you decide.

if the payoff was truly 'large', I guess that could make this more of a story too.

No, of course not - but right wingers will pretend they believe it. Loudly.

The reports indicate that the payoffs were 5 figure sums. Not exactly large. Almost as though it was a nuisance fee.

I don't think I'm capable of the mental gymnastics and logic free thought required now to be a rightwinger.

Even though Cain is running as someone who is not a politician, have you ever seen a politician who didn't lie? He's fitting right in with the rest of them if he is lying.

I'm wondering which one of his opponents found/leaked this.

It could have been Perry. But it is an interesting 'coincidence' that anyone who appears to be mounting a serious challenge to Mittens suddenly finds themselves having to answer for some kind of skeleton in their closet.

Smells like Rove in here all of a sudden.

Clearly Cain is a fictitious politician, as equally unrealistic as the fantasy policies he sometimes blurts out, or jokes about, or something.

That said, I always triple check everything before coming to a judgement about something like this. Sure, a lot of actual sexual harrassment goes on, and a lot of women are ignored or treated very badly when they try to complain. But it's also very easy for someone to look very bad when accused of something they didn't do, and accusations like this are the sort of thing that stick even when there's nothing there, in a 'Have you stopped beating your wife?' sort of way.

yeah that's in the 'cheaper than court' range.

I think I'm too cynical. I just presume at this point that the head of a lobbying group is naturally the kind of guy to get fresh with any female underlings. (Note: Not saying that its therefore okay, but rather that they're all scum)

His whole campaign is more believable as some form of freaky performance art.

If I wanted to over-think this, I could see how the sexual harassment thing (if it turns out it's not true) could be used to deflect from the illegal campaign funds thing (assuming that is for real).

And all of that is assuming that Cigarette Dude is smart enough to cook up a distraction like that.

(Damn. It's only Monday afternoon and I've almost used up a week's supply of cynicism already.)

If you are too cynical, that makes at least 2 of us. It has nothing to do with his profession so much for me as is the attitude he exudes of his self-defined superiority over others. He exhibits a serious "do you know who I am?" kind of entitlement attitude that for a man usually equates to treating women like servants who owe him a blow job... figuratively or literally.

It comes as no surprise at all to me to see this kind of accusation. Probably doesn't to many women.

Herman Cain's Denial Breaking Down Already

“I was aware of the false accusations that took place at the restaurant association, and then when we were asked for me to comment, they wanted for this to be from two anonymous sources,” Cain said. “We weren’t going to go and chase anonymous sources.”

That line of reasoning is fine, as far as it goes, except Cain neglected to mention one thing: one of the sources Politico came to the Cain campaign with wasn’t anonymous at all. This is from the original Politico story (emphasis ours):

Cain said he has “had thousands of people working for me” at different businesses over the years and could not comment “until I see some facts or some concrete evidence.” His campaign staff was given the name of one woman who complained last week, and it was repeated to Cain on Sunday. He responded, “I am not going to comment on that.”

Cain Chief of Staff and famous smoker Mark Block confirmed to TPM that Politico’s reporting of the events was accurate.

“I think Politico gave the campaign a name — I don’t know what that name is,” Block told TPM outside Cain’s event at the National Press Club Monday. “I think they did pass a name along, correct.”

So Cain’s strong words to Fox are already being found to be less-than-true. That’s not a good sign for a campaign trying to put a tough story behind it.

I kind of feel like he's making a story that people didn't much care about (at least if we're a reflection) into something much bigger by botching his response :p

Shouldn't the CEO know if a six figure payment was made for something as serious as this? Am I missing something here?

re: #24 Jerk

Five figure payment, but yeah, that part is weird.

26 jaunte  Mon, Oct 31, 2011 12:05:57pm

No organization pays that kind of money out in a settlement without meeting with the principal involved, and to claim otherwise is ludicrous.
