Rubin: Forget Everything You Thought You Knew About Michele Bachmann (R-Mars)

Pure propaganda in the Washington Post
Politics • Views: 24,766

Forget everything you thought you knew about Michele Bachmann.

Forget her claim that census data could be used to put people in concentration camps.

Forget her crazy claim that Planned Parenthood is setting up “sex clinics” in schools, with free abortions for 13-year old girls.

Forget her fanatical fundamentalism, and her bizarre claim that she receives prophetic visions and divine instructions directly from God.

Forget her idea that the best way to respond to a cyber attack would be to drop a nuclear bomb on … somebody.

Forget her hateful race-baiting claim that Obama is turning the US into “a nation of slaves.”

Forget her numerous revisionist claims about US history; for example, that Thomas Jefferson wanted to keep abortion illegal, or that the founding fathers “worked tirelessly to eliminate slavery.”

Forget her anti-science position that public schools should teach creationism.

Forget her and her husband’s twisted and dangerous “pray away the gay” clinics.

Forget her insane, utterly false claim that the HPV vaccine “ravages young girls.”

Forget all that and more, because according to the Washington Post’s resident right wing apologist Jennifer Rubin, Michele Bachmann is “knowledgable, articulate, focused and sober-minded.”

Despite all the evidence to the contrary.

There are those on the right such as Dick Morris who believe she can climb back in the race. As crazy as this race has been, I wouldn't completely discount the possibility.

As long as she is kicking Newt Gingrich I am all for her.

It doesn't mention anything about how her congressional colleagues absolutely despise her though.

What a vomitous opening paragraph:

I spoke with Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) the day after CNN’s foreign policy debate. Her aides looked worn after a slew of 18-hour days, but she was fresh and cheery. Her only immediate worry was getting out of the District and back to Minnesota for Thanksgiving. The highlight after dinner, she said is “turkey bingo” with gifts selected by her husband.

She was fresh and cheery because she's HEAVILY MEDICATED...

And I'm sure the gifts her husband picked out are all just faboulous...

When is the last time America elected a fat white haired man to the Oval Office?

Newt doesn't have a chance.

Rubin also approves of rich donors telling colleges who they can hire with their donations.

She's too dim to realize this would allow Arab regimes to do the same. This was described by a responsible journalist at the WaPo, who interviewed former president of George Washington University Stephen Joel Trachtenberg:

“I once got a gift from Kuwait, and they wanted to dictate who got the [endowed] chair,” Trachtenberg said. “And I said, ‘Guys, a gift is a gift. This is not a transaction. If you give me the money I’m going to use it to hire the best person I can. I’ll be happy to give you advance notice and if you really have objections, I’ll take them under consideration. And if I think it is really offensive to Kuwait, I will respect that. But even I am not going to unilaterally hire a faculty member. This is done through a process in which faculty play a big role. And no, you cannot have veto power. Those are the terms.”

Wow:

So what’s going on here? It’s fairly obvious this is part of the left-wing assault on the Koch brothers. Under the guise of “judicial ethics” or “academic freedom” or “political corruption” these groups mount attack after attack, hoping to smear the billionaire libertarians. That in turn will help re-elect Barack Obama. Or something. (I honestly can’t figure out the political utility of this obsession.)

25 wrenchghaziwenchghazi  Fri, Nov 25, 2011 10:50:51am

I heard Bachmann being interviewed on NPR this morning. Here's an excerpt.

Bachmann's campaign took a hit after she linked the HPV vaccine with mental retardation. In her book, she says it's really important to get your facts right, but acknowledges that she sometimes comes up short.

"I've said things that are inaccurate and I regret that, but the good thing about this process [is that it's] a good training ground to become better and I'm grateful for that opportunity," she tells Inskeep.

She says she doesn't think she's ever said anything inaccurate during a GOP debate, however, including when she said in Tuesday's national security debate that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich believes 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. should be made legal overnight.

They were much easier on her than she deserved, too. Maybe not quite a whitewash. Actually, I did think it was a whitewash until I read this Rubin piece.

I've been stopping and starting on a Page about thoughts on what objectivity means in today's media. I'm not a deep philosopher but have a few ideas on what it means to us here at LGF.

Previous icons of objectivity were about 'just the facts.' But it seems that people can present facts in evidence with opinion and still remain objective. I think this is what good writers do.

The trick is to show the bias of your opinion while not skewing facts, or skewing the presentation of facts.

Is it "bigotry" that I'm extremely un-fond of people who claim, out loud and in public, that they expect the rapture to happen within their lifetime? And that all the Jews in the world need to move to Israel immediately-if-not-sooner to make that happen?

Is it "bigotry" that I automatically disregard all pronouncements from people who claim, out loud and in public, that people and dinosaurs existed concurrently?

re: #28 palomino

Yeah, IIRC, it was a really profound argument that goes like this: since most Jews have fewer than five kids, they don't like Palin because she has five kids. Pffft.

That's code for "Liberal Jews are mostly urban, and middle-class, so they don't get Sarah's folksy, honest blue-collar lifestyle."

Which is subtly layered with so many decades of anti-Semitism that it's sort of mind-blowing. Rubin should know better.

(It also works nicely because Orthodox Jews are more likely to vote Republican, and also to have larger families, so you can create a false correlation between number of children and liking Palin.)

Palin canny on religion and politics
CAMPAIGN '08: CHURCH AND STATE
As governor and mayor, she has trod carefully between fundamentalist beliefs and public policy.
September 28, 2008|Stephen Braun | Times Staff Writer

ANCHORAGE — Soon after Sarah Palin was elected mayor of the foothill town of Wasilla, Alaska, she startled a local music teacher by insisting in casual conversation that men and dinosaurs coexisted on an Earth created 6,000 years ago -- about 65 million years after scientists say most dinosaurs became extinct -- the teacher said.

After conducting a college band and watching Palin deliver a commencement address to a small group of home-schooled students in June 1997, Wasilla resident Philip Munger said, he asked the young mayor about her religious beliefs.

Palin told him that "dinosaurs and humans walked the Earth at the same time," Munger said. When he asked her about prehistoric fossils and tracks dating back millions of years, Palin said "she had seen pictures of human footprints inside the tracks," recalled Munger, who teaches music at the University of Alaska in Anchorage and has regularly criticized Palin in recent years on his liberal political blog, called Progressive Alaska.

[…]

"She's obviously an intensively religious person," said Bill McAllister, Palin's chief spokesman as governor. "She understands that she's the governor and not preacher in chief. Religion informs her decisions, but she is not out to impose her views on Alaska."

McAllister said that he never heard Palin make such remarks about dinosaurs and that Palin preferred not to discuss her views on evolution publicly.

"I've never had a conversation like that with her or been apprised of anything like that," McAllister said. He added that "the only bigotry that's still safe is against Christians who believe in their faith."

(was it totally a hoax? Or maybe it was an elephant footprint that somebody was calling dinosaur? or... I dunno. Something. But she seemed convinced).

Philip Munger is an American composer, music educator, political blogger, and environmentalist living in Alaska. He is perhaps best known for "The Skies are Weeping", a seven-movement cantata written in tribute to Rachel Corrie, an American member of the International Solidarity Movement killed in 2003 by a bulldozer operated by the Israel Defense Forces while she tried to prevent a house demolition in the southern Gaza Strip during the Second Intifada. He currently lectures on cultural history at two campuses of the University of Alaska Anchorage and occasionally teaches tuba at the main Anchorage campus. He was born in 1946 and attended Oberlin Conservatory and the University of Washington, where he studied musical composition

The term 'bigot' is frequently used as a form of antagonism. Ironically in many cases, by bigots themselves.

Here's a recent squabble I got in on a professional forum where I was called a bigot. By a bigot.

It started with the dufus in Texas who wouldn't give gun safety lessons to 'non-Christian Arabs, Muslims, or Obama supporters.' Some think it's OK to discriminate, when you point out their idiocy they get a little pissyface.

And this is how the Palin-dinosaur controvery was covered back then in LGF:

It must not have been easy with Sarah Palin’s approval rating at 72% in Alaska, but Salon found two people willing to dish out negative gossip for their latest hit piece: Sarah Palin, Wasilla, book banning.

[…]

The other person willing to go on the record is a moonbat “progressive” musician known for a maudlin tribute to International Solidarity Movement heroine/terror supporter Rachel Corrie, that was canceled after a public outcry. Philip Munger is the first source I’ve seen who claims that Sarah Palin tried to get creationism into Alaskan schools. (The Associated Press said she had not.)

re: #49 000G

I haven't changed my opinion about Rachel Corrie or the International Solidarity Movement, by the way. Corrie didn't deserve to die, but she definitely was a tool of Palestinian propagandists, and the attempt to turn her into a hero was a cynical attempt to exploit her even more after she died.

And ISM is a very creepy extreme left-wing anti-Israel organization that deliberately sends naive young people like Corrie into dangerous areas. None of that has changed.

And as far as I know, it's also true that Palin refrained from trying to get creationism taught in science classes. She's obviously a young earth creationist herself, but I've never seen her advocate teaching it in public schools -- unlike Michele Bachmann.

The bushes
Early in her state Senate career Bachmann was caught spying on a pro-gay-rights rally by hiding behind bushes. This incident occurred after she was profiled in the Star Tribune and photographed vacuuming in heels (see LaFave's letter to the newspaper above). If there is one thing that's out of touch with voters in the 6th District, it's hiding in the bushes (unless to hunt) and vacuuming in heels.

Upcoming Bachmann political ad: "I am not a flake. I'm like you …"

I would really like to see someone actually challenge Bachmann during a debate or interview by making her defend the long shopping list of baseless accusations and reality-devoid proclamations that she has made during the past 2-3 years.

Typical exchange between Michele and an interviewer:
"So Congresswoman Bachmann, tell us about your views regarding the health care reform legislation that Congress passed last year."
"Obamacare is socialism ...", followed by a wide grin and bug-eyed stare at the camera. And when asked to elaborate, she'll reply "Obamacare is socialism ..." while grinning and giving another creepy stare.

I think that the Republican Party as a whole is ready to nominate a woman, .... but it ought to be one that has a reasonable chance to actually win. It would also be wise to nominate someone who:
- doesn't have a penchant for making accusations or basing public policy proposals on rumor, innuendo, and unsubstantiated anecdotes
- can discuss relevant issues without invoking God, and
- doesn't feel compelled to proclaim that those with opposing points of view are somehow less American than those who support her.

Michele eagerly jumped on the "birther bandwagon" until her political weathervane told her that it would be prudent to jump off and pretend it never happened.

Bachmann and Palin share fundamental character flaws -- both have a propensity toward making snide, petty comments about those with whom they disagree, neither does her homework before making public comments regarding important social and historical events, neither is capable of extemporaneously elaborating on their mundane, superficial talking points, and neither is mature enough to accept responsibility for her own mistakes, failures, and shortcomings.

Michele Bachmann is just another delusional tea party brown-nosing homophobe who pretentiously claims to be doing "God's work" -- using biased interpretations of cherry-picked biblical passages to justify her brand of social intolerance and religious self-righteousness.

One reason why Bachmann and Perry's proclamation that "God told them to run" will not sit well with most Americans -- the fundamental concept of God as a meddling, micromanaging manipulator who chooses sides in politics is as absurd as the claim that God enables a specific athletic team to win a championship.

In short, someone who regards herself as the Queen of White Tea could possibly (although extremely unlikely) win the GOP nomination, but she is much too far from the ideological mainstream to garner enough support from the rest of the voting populace to win a presidential election.
