I assumed that, beyond the Christian Zionist aspect, the pro-Israel posturing was aimed at elderly Jews in Florida, because although places like New York, Illinois, and California are off the table for the GOP, the "Del Boca Vista" vote can be added to the anti-Castro Cuban vote and the redneck vote and give them a shot at taking the state.

Romney claimed that Obama said that Israel should go back to the 1967 borders. That's a lie. A lie he knows is a lie, too.
Santorum apparently has decided he gets to set Israeli policy, by saying the West Bank (and probably other places) that Israel has ceded are still part of Israel. That's certainly a position some people in Israel holds, but not the actual nation of Israel.
Rick Perry said that Obama is causing the problems in the middle east, which is about as gross a lie as you can get.
You have no problems with any of those lies? They're all a good idea to say?

Romney lied, because Obama did not say that Israel should return to the 1967 borders. That's how it was falsely reported in a shameful, stupid attempt to smear Obama by the right-wing media, and, sadly, by the right-wing Israeli parties. What he said was a return to the 1967 borders with land swaps for protection, which, son-of-a-gun, is the same policy as Israel itself has. He also, in that same speech, said that the Palestinians need to recognize Israel's right to exist.
So Romney lied. And frankly, I find your ignorance about this pretty fucking shocking.
It's as if I told someone to sign a contract after checking it over with their lawyer, and someone accused me of badgering them into just signing a contract.

The content of tonight's debate looks like the Iowa GOP intentionally tried to steer clear of the hot button issues in its platform - no gay marriage question, no abortion question, no creationism question, etc.
This really opened the door for Newt to do his rhetorical best to say a lot of words, and for Paul to keep pushing the FED as an issue.
Now, all of those candidates would not be willing to go against any of those Iowa GOP hot button issues so I realize ABC had to come up with a way to find some conflict among the candidates to keep it interesting, so I guess as a consumer of this entertainment I should be happy, but in the general election the GOP candidate will not be so lucky.

Right now, the Obama campaign seems to be largely based around arguing that the GOP are the party of the rich, the party that will do anything, including sell out the futures of the poor and middle classes, to ensure that the rich only get richer. A new record for wreaths laid at Arlington: 90,000
Volunteers honoured veterans buried at Arlington National Cemetery on Saturday with a massive effort to lay tens of thousands of holiday wreaths at their tombstones.
Maine's Gov. Paul LePage and Sen. Olympia Snowe joined thousands of volunteers in placing the wreaths with red bows at the gravesites of about 90,000 veterans. It was the most wreaths ever placed at the cemetery in a 20-year-old tradition.
The most wreaths ever given in the past was 25,000, spokeswoman Amber Caron said.
Organizers said they hoped to place 100,000 wreaths this year, but donations fell short of that goal, the Associated Press reports.
Still, the nonprofit group Wreaths Across America said they aim to honor every veteran at the cemetery by placing 220,000 wreaths there in the future.
About 15,000 people joined the effort, Caron said. Within a few hours, all the wreaths were distributed across the large cemetery.

I still get GOP emails. I got one either yesterday or today from the Romney campaign...bashing Obama for playing golf. Here's the text:
Since taking office, President Obama has repeatedly promised he would “not rest until every American who is able and ready and willing to work can find a job.” And 1,584 holes of golf later, the President has stayed true to this promise by staying busy on the links.

Basically, everyone agrees in theory on the pre-67 war borders, with some swaps and agreements.
The problems, unfortunately, are legion, especially the issue of Gaza.

That's what I made in 1990 as a graduate assistant. I think you'd have to double or triple that since my tuition was also paid, and I got to buy really cheap health insurance through the university.

A lot of people are "willing to take stands and fight for them." That doesn't
(a) make those stands worthwhile (such as firing adult working class people in an economy as awful as this); and (b) still doesn't make Newt temperamentally suited for the job.
He was too pugnacious to be Speaker and in that job, you're supposed to be a dick. How the hell can he change his stripes at this late age and be something that is simply not in his nature? It's no accident that he pisses off some group nearly every day. It's who he is, and it would be poison for the White House.

I think what people are missing with the 10k bet is it's not really about if the bet was for 5 bucks or 1 million dollars much less 10 grand.
It looks very unpresidential to try to make a bet during a nationally televised Debate for the highest office in the land. It borderlines as childish behavior..

As mind boggling as the prospect of a Newt presidency may be, what is currently playing out is probably the best scenario for the Dems. Most of the GOP candidates are complete clowns, fodder for SNL more than legit contenders.
Romney would likely be a more formidable candidate in the general, because he possesses at least a modicum of tact and discipline...and could make the election more of a referendum on Obama, who is certainly vulnerable.
Gingrich, OTOH, will make the election about himself and is much more likely to offend and self-destruct than a mannequin like Romney.

At some point you're going to have to reconcile the fact that a vote for Newt is a vote against judicial review, against the Constitution, separation of powers and the rule of law.
If any Democrat expressed the views Gingrich has on making laws exempt from Supreme Court scrutiny you'd be rightfully appalled. The fact that a GOP frontrunner can get away with this and still potentially have your vote makes the truth apparent, party is far more important to you than country.

In a debate the weight of a word can convey strength and emotion...
The GOP have been very Junior high in many ways..Surprising...I've watched every debate so far and I'm not impressed.. I'm over it..
Remember When Hillary and Obama went after it? Man..That was white hot shit questioning everything about the other.. The 3am calls, Iran, just about everything.
Both did very well overall on stage and maturity...In Fact..After those final bone bruising primary debates I think America generally would have been OK with either candidate to be POTUS.

Transnational corporations have no respect for borders, sovereignty, national security, or any of those quaint little concepts. They can set up shell offices wherever the hell they want, and if things get inconvenient on the personal home front, their owners can afford to bugger off to a safe haven somewhere else.

That's a big part of your problem, you often don't take the things Republcians say in earnest, seriously. The is a cheap way for you to reconcile blatant conflicts between your partisan loyalty and basic civic responsibility. That fact that he said this, purports to believe it, and apparently intends to try to implement the idea triggering a Constitutional crisis is all manner of reason to make sure he's never the sole head of an entire branch of government.

I'm not too keen on the 67 borders myself. Israel's streak of doing the judo instructor move where you turn your back and tell the students to come at you with a knife is too nerve-wracking. But there it is.

Obama said "The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states." That's not classified. He said it in public, just as Bush said his piece about the 1949 armistice lines out loud. Wingnuts screamed that he was trying to destroy Israel, and others got a little too slap-happy insisting that '1967 borders with land swaps' was totally different from '1967 borders'. This is what it's all based on.

At some point you're going to have to reconcile the fact that a vote for Newt is a vote against judicial review, against the Constitution, separation of powers and the rule of law.
A vote for Newt is a vote for a known distorter of history, who self-confesses that he'll say anything to get where he wants to. Fundamentally he's more morphic than Romney could ever be, which is why Romney looks so uncomfortable when he is trying on a new ideology but Newt makes it look easy.

The neighbors *did* pay a permanent territorial price. Egypt's treaty includes that they permanently lost Gaza, and Jordan's treaty includes that they permanently waived any claim to the west bank.

Meh, at least Newt managed to maintain the same persona (grumpy old man) whatever he was doing while Romney has tried to go from being a liberal republican (yes Virignia such things did once exist) when running for Governor of Mass to one of the faithful, which is why his flip flops stand out more.

Jordan ceded their claim in the West Bank to the PLO. Which isn't what I would call 'helping'. And Egypt wouldn't take Gaza back if they were begged.
If either country would take their land BACK, we'd have a different situation on our hands.

I consider Newt to be far, far worse than Mitt could ever be. We kid a lot here about how drunk Perry seems (though Diane seems to have beat him in that tonight) or how looney conspiratorial Paul is (in truth.)
I've said before, and about his I'm not kidding, I'd be very interested in seeing how Newt would do in psych tests that try to ferret out sociopaths.
Romney, when he is trying on a wingnut meme like a new suit, actually looks and sound uncomfortable. It's as if deep down something is saying to him "do I really have to say this?"
Newt, OTOH, rambles off demagogic speech like you and me breathe - without a moments hesitation. He really does, and he's done it for years and years. Even when he isn't playing to populist themes he still tries to make it sound as if he has been exactly what he isn't.
Perry's stumbling in speeches shows that he is uncomfortable with what he is pretending to be. Romney's pained expressions shows that he knows he's pretending sometimes. Even Santorum's long winded digressions shows that he feels the need to explain himself.
But Newt? Newt just blathers out bullshit on automatic, with a pompous attitude that the masses mistake for actual scholarship.
