Rick Santorum Endorsed by Fundamentalist Birther Vander Plaats

The religious right’s choice for King
Wingnuts • Views: 18,568

How can you tell which GOP candidate is the most fanatical fundamentalist, in a pack of fanatical fundamentalists?

He’s the one who gets the coveted endorsement of Birther Bob Vander Plaats of the Iowa “Family” Leader: Rick Santorum wins support of influential Iowa evangelical.

Influential Iowa conservative activist Bob Vander Plaats Tuesday endorsed fellow social conservative Rick Santorum for president, saying, “I believe Rick Santorum comes from us, not to us.”

Vander Plaats made the announcement immediately after the Christian conservative organization group he heads, The Family Leader, said it would be staying neutral in the race. Fellow activist Chuck Hurley joined Vander Plaats is offering his personal backing of Santorum immediately after the announcement.

Curious, isn’t it, that the mainstream media completely miss Vander Plaats’s belief in a racist conspiracy theory? He gets quoted instead as an “influential evangelical.”

This is one reason the political process has become so debased; the media are not doing their jobs. They put everyone on the same level of credibility, and lunatic Birthers are presented as authoritative sources, with no context. They shy away from making any kind of value judgments, even of people who are obviously not playing with a full deck.

Absolutely. And when they're not doing that, they're pretending that the extremist views are actually 'brave' by virtue of being extremist-- like the tongue-bath the media gave Paul Ryan for his evil, stupid, incoherent, and fantasy-land budget.

The GOP still thinks its needs the support of these people to win.

Problem is, they have become rather demanding and really want to put these issues to the forefront instead of having the "family values" things a little in-party sideshow.

I wonder if after Gingrich goes down in flames if Santorum will become the next flavor of the month?

Paul. Gingrich is already imploding. Santorum is probably next- he'll be the only not-mormon left after paul collapses.

9 SanFranciscoZionist  Tue, Dec 20, 2011 10:12:12am

Santorum is the whiniest and most steretypical of the social conservatives, but he also doesn't stand a chance. I'd be more worried if this guy had tapped Perry or Bachmann, that it would make a real difference.

The influence of people like this annoys me. I'm still pissed off that McCain and Obama humbly met up at Saddleback to be vetted by Rick Goddamn Warren.

I honestly don't know how much traction Santorum can build. God knows, I don't want to find out, either, but he seems like a hard sell for them.

Even though he's worked in Washington, his resume is paper-thin. Just like Bachmann, he's been to Washington, lived there, worked there, but never really did anything.

Among a pack of goony wanna-bes, he's an also-ran - which makes him an automatic has-been.

He also--I don't exactly know how to say this, but while he has the so-con patter, it tends to the introspective and the whiny. Perry yells, "We can't even have prayer in school!" Santorum whines softly, "I feel like our families are under attack." Santorum talks like a Perry voter, not a Perry rival.

There's also something slightly feminine about his manner and presentation, which I think doesn't translate well to voters.

It's a shame he's such a nutjob, because he is, I think, smarter and better-informed than many of them, he just chooses to waste it all on protecting his right to be a heterosexual male from the ACLU and Planned Parenthood.

Even quotes from their own write-up (paged here by RWC) belie their argument:

They used harsh terms such as “end” and “kill” when the program would still exist, although in a privatized system.

Durr hurr, if we turn public fire protection into a fee-for-service system, it technically still exists!

Perry responds to imaginary friend

Last night, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who has been working vigorously to court Religious Right activists, appeared on a conference call with Ralph Reed’s Faith and Freedom Coalition where he spent most of the time discussing his accomplishments in Texas and his committed opposition to abortion rights and gay rights. He quoted Ezekiel 22:30 to call on Americans to “stand in the gap” by fighting “for the unborn and for the traditional values” and against “the secular left.” Perry also claimed that God is commissioning leaders to “get our country back,” and cited Isaiah 6:8: ““Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’”

But... but... we have to find some example, no matter how contrived, of Democrats appearing to say something that might, under some circumstances, be perceived as not entirely true!

Otherwise we'll just have to go back to another run-of-the-mill "Republicans lie through their teeth" story. BO-RING.

BREAKING: House Republicans Walk Away From Bipartisan Compromise on Payroll Tax Cut, Jobless Benefits

Moments ago, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives voted 229-193 to walk away from a bipartisan compromise that would have extended for two months both the payroll tax cut for 160 million working Americans and long-term unemployment benefits for millions of jobless Americans, as well as stopped automatic cuts to Medicare reimbursement rates for doctors that are scheduled for Jan. 1, 2012. Seven Republicans joined every Democrat in opposing the motion to abandon the Senate’s compromise plan and instead move to a House-Senate conference committee.

These were the 10 "finalists" for the reader's polls:

President Obama "went around the world and apologized for America." -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney

The Obama administration's review of obsolete regulations was "unprecedented." -- President Barack Obama

The vaccine to prevent HPV can cause mental retardation. -- Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann

"Republicans voted to end Medicare." -- The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and other Democrats

Abortion services are "well over 90 percent of what Planned Parenthood does." -- Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.

Because of more restrictive voting laws, Republicans "want to literally drag us all the way back to Jim Crow laws." -- Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., and head of the Democratic National Committee

Scientists are "questioning the original idea that man-made global warming is what is causing the climate to change. … (It is) more and more being put into question."-- Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry

Congressional Republicans have introduced dozens of bills on social issues and other topics, but "zero on job creation." -- Facebook posts

The economic stimulus created "zero jobs." -- The National Republican Senatorial Committee and other Republicans

"I didn't raise taxes once." -- President Barack Obama

More on the AFA's endorsement of Gingrich

Newt Gingrich Secures Endorsement Of Anti-Gay ‘Family’ Group He Helped Fund

One of the cogs in Gingrich’s vast network of business enterprises and front groups, ReAL Action, has provided $125,000 to the AFA’s sister organization, American Family Association Action. The group’s outspoken policy directory Bryan Fischer has “proposed criminalizing homosexual behavior” and has even advocated forcing gays into “reparative” therapy.

When ThinkProgress confronted Gingrich over his association with the group, the former speaker defended Fischer, saying, “You bring a series of allegations that I can’t check about a group that is largely a Christian based membership group, that is fairly widespread in its membership and I suspect most of those people do not in any way think of themselves as a hate group even if that’s how you would characterize them.
