it’s called one foot on the platform and the other on the train….it’s gonna give Mitt the blues

2 ElCapitanAmerica  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 2:38:22pm

Translation “I don’t think he feels … attached to his roots”
The more literal translation is a bit more direct; “I don’t think he feels … a commitment to his roots”.

Very interesting, so did Romney’s dad have dual citizenship?

3 Kragar (Antichrist )  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 2:38:44pm

Obviously this call into questions Mitt’s loyalty to America.

Romney’s dad would have had dual citizenship, and if I’m reading wikipedia right so does Mitt.

The terms aren’t mutually exclusive, dual citizens are US citizens.

re: #4 albusteve

You can have dual citizenship, just some countries don’t allow it (so if you become a US citizen they determine you are no longer a citizen of their country). But it varies.

It’s a bit complicated from the US side, you can have US citizenship but you swear loyalty to only the US … so it’s a bit of an “odd” situation.

I posted a couple of Pages that relate to the Mexican Romneys two and a half years ago (my how time flies!) One still has a live link, the other one won’t connect to the article, but the headline still appears in the page header (or whatever you call that top bar in the browser.)

Kidnappings bring Chihuahua protest (With live link.)

Kidnappers free rancher related to former U.S. presidential candidate Mitt Romney (With disabled link.)

Here’s a Page about a Mormon community in that area, but I don’t think it mentions the Romneys.

Fear and Death in a Mormon Town in Mexico

(That Dashboard is great.)

And, to repeat from the previous thread, this is a great book. The woman whose biography it is turns out to be related to the Romneys, but the author didn’t know that when she wrote the book. The Fourth Wife: Polygamy, Love, and Revolution.

Julian LeBaron speaks in the video above. This is his late brother, Benjamin LeBaron.

And this is an opinion piece from 2010 in the Dallas Morning News by Julian LeBaron.

I call upon those who cultivate the land; those who care for animals; those who work in commerce, mines and construction. I call upon those who labor in our industries, those who care for our children, and to all who live honestly but have almost stopped dreaming because they feel defeated by a system that does not make good our efforts.

I am petitioning those who are victims of murder, kidnapping or extortion - by people who force the involuntary sacrifice of our good, so they can live further entrenched in their evil and ruin the lives of those who know how to live, for the benefit of parasites who do not.

In my state of Chihuahua and throughout Mexico, innumerable lives have been devastated by the loss of freedom and respect that are the right of every human. A system that does not respect the life, property and conscience of the individual is a system of criminals. A society ruled by men, and not by law, is a society of vultures and cannibals who feed on desolation.

I petition all who resent laws that forbid self-defense but cannot enforce justice, because I, Julian LeBaron, have had the outrageous experience of being chased at high speed by murderers who wore ski masks and were heavily armed. When my vehicle ramped a bridge at 70 mph, I stalled in the middle of the town of Ignacio Zaragoza. In a residential area, in view of many too afraid to help, I was severely beaten with machine guns. In the presence of my wife and children, they threatened to kidnap me, terrorizing my family. Innocent people suffer humiliation continually.

[…]

I think this is part of the resentment toward Mitt Romney. His relatives could really use some help down there, and all he does is talk about illegal aliens.

How do some of these morans get through the day without hurting themselves?

Max Boot: Highly Disputed Call For Iran War Stands Undisputed

In a blog post yesterday on Commentary magazine’s website, Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) scholar Max Boot goes beyond simply ignoring ideas with which he disagrees, and informs readers that no such credible ideas even exist. Boot’s article, headlined “A Powerful Case for Force Against Iran,” picks up on an article from Foreign Affairs magazine, CFR’s bi-monthly journal.

Boot’s fellow CFR scholar Matthew Kroenig, in an article entitled “Time to Attack Iran: Why a Strike is the Least Bad Option,” wrote that “a military strike intended to destroy Iran’s nuclear program, if managed carefully, could spare the region and the world a very real threat.” Calling the piece a “powerful and sober article in favor of bombing Iran,” Boot writes that Kroenig “knocks down pretty much all of the objections [to bombing] that have been made.” Boot’s approbation should come as no surprise, since he himself has called for war against Iran. But the most shocking part of Boot’s post was his concluding line:

I have yet to see (have I missed it?) an equally detailed and convincing exposition of the anti-bombing side.

Let me try to be more clear…the link you provided refers to how Mexico considered citizens, so to them, Romney’s dad would be a Mexican citizen (unless he relinquished that citizenship), but the U.S. would consider him a dual citizen.

Yeah. I think that’s just Dixville Notch for the time being. But I hope he does fail. I imagine that Perry must be just about to explode since Ron Paul it beating him in the polls and lost in Iowa. Also projected to lose to Ron Paul tonight. Perry will probably suspend his campaign after tonight. Doesn’t make sense for him to keep going.

Speaking of porn and masturbation here is an article on Slate about how prison inmates are denied the right to even masturbate. The article says that stats imply that porn may decrease sex crimes like rape; incidences are dropping even as free porn has become easily available on the internet.

Julian LeBaron speaks in the video above. This is his late brother, Benjamin LeBaron.

And this is an opinion piece from 2010 in the Dallas Morning News by Julian LeBaron.

I think this is part of the resentment toward Mitt Romney. His relatives could really use some help down there, and all he does is talk about illegal aliens.

Downstairs you asked me if George Romney would be ineligible for the presidency due to being born in Mexico even though both his parents were Americans. I read US v. Wong Kim Ark, and it went into great detail concerning the fact that the US adopted the common law definition of “natural born”, and therefore citizenship was determined by jus soli (soil) rather than jus sanguinus (blood). The SCOTUS said there are only two paths to US citizenship, either through birth in US territory or naturalization, and that the children of Americans born abroad were citizens due to an Act of Congress; thus they were naturalized, and not natural born, citizens. There are very few exceptions, such as children born at sea or the children of ambassadors.

I don’t think that’s accurate. They’re not born, then naturalized. They’re born citizens.

That was what I thought as well, until I read Wong Kim Ark carefully. In his opinion, Justice Gray stated:

Every person born in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, becomes at once a citizen of the United States, and needs no naturalization. A person born out of the jurisdiction of the United States can only become a citizen by being naturalized, either by treaty, as in the case of the annexation of foreign territory, or by authority of Congress, exercised either by declaring certain classes of persons to be citizens, as in the enactments conferring citizenship upon foreign-born children of citizens, or by enabling foreigners individually to become citizens by proceedings in the judicial tribunals, as in the ordinary provisions of the naturalization acts.

Children of US citizens born abroad are citizens by an act of Congress. The Constitution gives Congress the power of naturalization, thus such children are naturalized citizens. “Natural born” is an ancient term from English common law, and it applies only to children born within US territory, with very limited exceptions. Justice Gray’s opinion explains it all in great detail, if you have the patience to read a 19th Century legal opinion.

Most hilarious story online about ‘catching’ your child on the computer EVER.

Right, I’m a parent, but I’ve been looking forward to him hitting the internet red light district for years, because I see no reason not to greet the inevitable with the joy of finding new and exciting ways to make fun of him. I want to say this is like, a parenting strategy, but mostly, I just enjoy the twitching and recoding normal words for him into moments of horror because that’s just fun.

It was definitely youtube, and he was definitely watching with intent, so I assumed—as one does—this would be a The Moment He Got Caught Watching Internet Porn and it was like Christmas. Because that’s ammunition for years. Especially if it’s like, bad.

Then I saw the screen.

Well, that’s just plain stupid.

Don’t think it’s true. There’s no distinction ever made for any other reason between circumstances of birth.

And US citizenship is both jus solis and jus sanguinis.

To be honest, I’ve never been entirely clear on the issue either.

From what I can recall, I thought there were two issues.
1) Natural Born = born on US soil

No. That’s a birther claim that I’ve never seen any support for.

2) Dual/tri-citizenship. I think I’d have to renounce other citizenships to gain the necessary security clearances. I’d be very surprised if Romney has Mexican citizenship.

Sure, probably.

Puerto Rico is US territory, and Puerto Ricans are US citizens, so yes, they are “natural born” citizens.

re: #159 aagcobb

I’m sorry, but this idea of natural born meaning that is something I’ve only seen claimed by birthers. Lots of terms changed slightly in meaning between English common law and US, and since our citizenship rules are different from theirs, there is no reason to think that we’d be using their common law definition.

re: #165 aagcobb

You’re basing all of this on your reading of this law, or what?

The Congressional Research Service has stated that the weight of scholarly legal and historical opinion indicates that the term means one who is entitled under the Constitution or laws of the United States to U.S. citizenship “at birth” or “by birth,” including any child born “in” the United States (other than to foreign diplomats serving their country), the children of United States citizens born abroad, and those born abroad of one citizen parent who has met U.S. residency requirements.

No, I’m basing it on the Supreme Court Opinion in US v. Wong Kim Ark. I’m not asking anyone to take my word for it; just read the opinion for yourself. Justice Gray went to great lengths to establish what “natural born” meant at common law, and to establish that the common law definition was adopted for the US Constitution.

Hiya Lizards!
2008 VP selections were made by world events.. Let’s go back in the time machine..
When it was time for Obama to pick a VP ( pre 2008 meltdown)there was some serious foreign policy shit going down with Georgia and Russia..The Dems wanted a ticket with somebody with heavy duty creds in Foreign policy and Biden was selected…
when McCain was selecting a VP.. Hillary had lost to Obama and there was a ton of PUMA anger out there…They thought the act of selecting a woman..any woman would take away tons of votes from Obama..

According to wikipedia, the Panama Canal Zone was an unorganized US territory. Thus John McCain was born in US territory entitling him to US citizenship.

Yeah, I’ve read it, and I disagree with your interpretation of the decision. I agree with the Congressional Research Service.

From the decision:

The common law principle of allegiance was the law of all the States at the time of the Revolution and at the adoption of the Constitution, and, by that principle, the citizens o the United States are, with the exceptions before mentioned,

(namely, foreign-born children of citizens, under statutes to be presently referred to)

such only as are either born or made so, born within the limits and under the jurisdiction of the United States or naturalized by the authority of law, either in one of the States before the Constitution or, since that time, by virtue of an act of the Congress of the United States.

and:

whose fathers were or shall be natural-born subjects of the Crown of England, or of Great Britain, at the time of the birth of such children respectively … . shall be deemed, adjudged and taken to be natural-born subjects of this kingdom, to all intents, constructions and purposes whatsoever.

So that’s clearly a time when British law had foreign-born children as’natural born’ subjects of the UK.

And, most tellingly:

In the act of 1790, the provision as to foreign-born children of American citizens was as follows:

The children of citizens of the United States, that may be born beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural-born citizens: Provided, that the right of citizenship shall not descend to persons whose fathers have never been [p673] resident in the United States.

1 Stat. 104. In 1795, this was reenacted in the same words, except in substituting for the words “beyond sea, or out of the limits of the United States” the words “out of the limits and jurisdiction of the United States.” 1 Stat. 415.

That case was not concerned with deciding the matter as it applied to foreign-born citizens of the US, anyway.

Oops, you’re right. I thought it went back to the Panamanians (de jure, not de facto) before the big fooferaw about returning it.

(According to The Fount of Wisdom — wikipedia, the question of whether someone born outside the US to US citizens is eligible to run for president has never been considered by the Supreme Court.)

re: #183 Obdicut

I don’t think you are interpreting Justice Gray’s opinion correctly, but its not terribly important, so I’ll just agree to disagree.
