Mitt Romney Wins New Hampshire Primary

Mittens walks away with it
Politics • Views: 32,202

NBC News is calling the New Hampshire primary for Mitt Romney, followed by Ron Paul and Jon Huntsman. The results so far:

Romney - 36%
Paul - 25%
Huntsman - 17%
Gingrich - 11%
Santorum - 10%
Perry - 1%

Some obvious conclusions: it’s all over for Rick “Evolution’s Just a Theory” Perry, and Newt Gingrich’s bizarre strategy of attacking Mitt Romney from the left has backfired, big time.

The scandal is that Paul came in second. He should not have been a serious candidate.

Perry chose to ignore NH, so I think he's going on to SC anyway. Huntsman's distant 3rd place finish demonstrates the hopelessness of his campaign.

Yeah, this was the high-water mark for Huntsman, as this was the only early state he made a real serious commitment to. He might as well pack it in now.

Pretty much.

Ron Paul is attacking Romney's opponents for attacking his business record. Saying they're ignorant.

He defended Romney from the attacks Gingrich made against him. Paul has been attacking almost everyone except Romney. His clear objective is to eliminate everyone else from the race so that he is the only alternative left to Romney. He is trying to push the GOP to become the defacto Libertarian Party; on economic issues the GOP is most of the way there.

Well Huntsman camped out in NH the way Santorum did in Iowa, but I don't see where his campaign goes from here, unless he wants to wait for the Utah primary.

15 Killgore Trout  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 5:17:11pm

Huntsman has received very little attention and might emerge undamaged enough to run again next time. I suspect none of the current crop will return again.

When he supported the Brady Bill in 1994, Romney said, "That's not going to make me the hero of the NRA. I don't line up with the NRA." Just before declaring his candidacy for the 2008 Republican nomination for president, Romney joined the National Rifle Association (NRA). In 2005, Romney declared the 31st anniversary of the Gun Owners' Action League "Right to Bear Arms Day".

The key here is if Romney is the candidate would be to create a strong level of disillusion amongst Republican voters. The Obama camp needs to foment apathy with those voters. That means bringing up right wing talking points such as the few points I brought up here. So you have to let these Republican voters know, "did you know that Romney supported the Brady Bill?" The big one of course is Romney Care.

Up till last week I was saying it could be a race. Now, I say Charles was prescient.

The only way there might have been a race would be for someone else to win SC and/or Florida.

Romney's going to win NH. He's going to win SC. He's going to win Florida. At that point unless he craters or some act of gravel interferes there'll be no doubt in anyone's mind.

We're going to have ten long months of Romney v Obama, most of them in the guise of Romney vs the also-rans (because of the way the money moves).

205 lawhawk  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 6:27:10pm

Mitt wins, and who will get the press tomorrow? Huntsman because he managed to come in third? Sheesh.

Here's my take:

Mitt wins because it's NH and they know Mitt as the former Mass. governor.

Paul came in second (again), but it's not like he's got any topside potential. This is as far as it goes for him but he'll spin this as his launching pad to victory.

Huntsman predicated his entire strategy (if you can call it that) on NH. He's in third (and that's probably where he'll end up). He's toast.

Santorum? Fourth and tied with Gingrich, and not exactly catching fire even after the surprise showing in IA. Gingrich has maxed out and is already into his campaign's death spiral, but he'll stick around so he thinks he can stick it to Romney; once again showing what kind of mean-spirited political shill he is.

And then, there's Perry who was an afterthought in NH. After being an afterthought in IA. And will be an afterthought in SC. He's toast, and he doesn't know it yet.

Perry will probably call it next week, after he blows up in SC, even though he should be done tomorrow.

208 HAL2010  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 6:29:14pm
With 85 of 301 precincts reporting, 52,191 voters have cast a ballot in the Republican primary so far. That projects to about 185,000 votes statewide, as compared with about 240,000 votes in the Republican primary in 2008. The drop-off in turnout looks worse for Republicans since a higher fraction of voters - about half this year, compared to 37 percent in 2008 - are independents. That means that turnout among registered Republicans could alone be off by nearly 40 percent from 2008.

Oh, that isn't even the worst of it for the GOP - they're seriously below the projected turnout, which bodes quite poorly for the GOP going forward. You'll get the conservatives claiming that turnout is down because Mitt isn't doing it for the party, but no one else is doing anything to light a fire under the rank and file GOP either. They're just not that into the GOP message in NH (and we might start seeing this trend down the line in other states, and that's a real bad sign for any attempt to beat Obama in the general).

Election related, but not this one.

Apparently, the Governor of Puerto Rico has set the day of October 12 for the first round of plebicite on the Status of the Island. If a second round is needed, it will occur on Election Day.

Considering the history of the Plebicites, and what happened at the last election, there is a good chance this will be the end of the 50-star Flag.

If this happens however, another question: States usually don't come alone. They usually went in pairs, or more. So, who becomes 52?

Populists are morons....
Fed's Lofty Profit Becomes Treasury's Gain

Preliminary unaudited results released by the central bank Tuesday showed the Fed had net income of $78.9 billion in 2011. In 2010, the Fed booked a record $81.7 billion profit and returned $79.3 billion of it to the Treasury.
...
So far the Fed's crisis-lending programs have produced booming profits. The Fed earned $83.6 billion from interest on its holdings of U.S. Treasurys, federal agency debt and securities held by government-run mortgage-finance firms Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the central bank said. Some of its most profitable areas changed in 2011, affecting overall earnings. For example, insurer American International Group Inc., which was bailed out during the crisis in 2008, repaid all its obligations to the New York Fed, meaning the Fed got less interest income from AIG last year compared with 2010.

Put on your pantaloons and dance around the Marxist drum circle!

To be a cynical fuck, Canada is more Liberal than we are, so gaining it would permanently wreck the conservatives.

However. I would want each Province to be a state in it's own right. That would do some good in a Senate.

However, if something were to happen like that, I would want a Constitutional re-write. Big-Time.

However, this will not happen. At least for an extremely long time.

re: #265 aagcobb

There would be no reason not to, aside from the ignoramuses. I think it would actually be a Republican state for at least a little while too.

Still, who would take spot #52. Having just one dribble in would be odd, in a historical sense.

You can bet Congress won't allow it to be D.C.

If I am correct on my hypothesis that Puerto Rico would be Republican (I have a hunch it will, considering the dominant faction in the hyper-dominant PNP), D.C. will help do the traditional of power.

If this passes, I think the move should be made to try and get the remain reasonably populated territories to statehood. Aside from Puerto Rico, these are the Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Marianas Islands, American Samoa, and Washington D.C.

The Guano Act Islands should be dealt with then too.

If the vote for statehood in Puerto Rico is close, I would be troubled by making it a state. Puerto Rico had a terrorist group for independence planting bombs at one time, and statehood is forever. Its just a bad idea to have a state in which a large portion of the population wants to be a separate nation.

The last vote had both independence parties getting a combined less than 5% of the vote. I don't see that as a worry.

It won't be the absolute curbstomp the 2008 Election was though. Where every executive office was won by the PNP, and over 70% of both houses had PNP seats. It would be a race, I don't doubt. That runoff may be needed. Big Time.

Also, noticed this on the page for the 51st State on Wiki. It was sourced:

On Thursday 29th December 2011, David Aaronovitch argued in The Times that the UK should consider joining the USA, as the British population cannot accept union with Europe and the UK would inevitably decline on its own. He argued that England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should be four separate states of the USA.[77]

Foxconn subcontracts for just about every major American electronics company; their track record in regards to how they treat their labor force makes a slave galley seem like a pleasant place to work.

Everything Is Made by Foxconn

...The three-decade expansion from television-knob maker to the world’s dominant consumer-electronics manufacturer passed with little notice from the Western press.

That changed in June 2006 when the London Daily Mail published a story about harsh conditions for 30,000 workers at Foxconn’s iPod factory in Longhua. When two reporters at China Business News did their own version of the story, Gou’s first reaction was to counterattack. Foxconn sued them personally for libel and secured a court order freezing their assets, backing off only at the behest of Apple and HP.
Apple Investigation

The incident prompted Apple executives to dispatch an audit team to investigate conditions at the Longhua plant. The report, still available on Apple’s company website, uncovered several violations of Apple’s code of conduct, including excessive overtime, an overly complicated wage structure and unacceptable living conditions such as triple-decker bunk beds. Foxconn made changes that included an overhaul of its overtime practices.

No -- it's China that isn't treating workers fairly. Yes, American companies deserve some blame for taking advantage of the existing reality, but they didn't create this situation.

They're paying the wages, they could demand better conditions. They don't because the main consumers, the US, Europe and Canada, demand low cost goods and using and abusing workers in China and other emerging countries is the easiest way to provide low cost and still make a bundle.

Those companies are morally responsible for work conditions.

And because Americans can basically only afford those products at those prices. It's also a matter of wage disparity. If those products weren't made in China then these companies would go out of business. The only way to balance that would be for American workers to make more.

Jumping feet-first into a flame fest, but Charles is, in a general sense, correct. When Apple products go wrong, they are usually far more frustrating, because they are essentially black boxes; but when you look at failure rates over volume, Apple wins pretty much hands-down. Not to mention their rate of hardware-related software failures is much less.

I agree, though in a country where there are more poor (really dirt poor) people than the entire population of the US the ready supply of cheap labor cannot be exhausted by any one company, or even group of companies. So if it isn't American companies, then entities whose legal creation are in other countries will just step in and take over that industry/business.

The dramatic gap between the average American lifestyle (of the post WWII era) and the average daily life in most other nations inevitably was going to lead to industry moving to where there was cheaper labor. The only way to have stopped it would have been to outlaw it and use tariffs or outright import bans and that was deemed unworkable or undesirable.

I don't see this as a commanding victory, given the fact that: (a) NH is practically Romney's home state, and apparently the state where he had the highest favorable rating in the whole country; and (b) the relatively weak field he's running against. The only other candidate who's not deeply flawed is Huntsman, who had Perry type numbers until a couple weeks ago.

Having said that, it will all be over if Romney can win by big margins in SC and FL. And Republicans would vote for a ham sandwich if it was running against Obama. But there doesn't seem to be the kind of intraparty enthusiasm for Romney that there was for Bush in 2000; or for any of the top candidates (Obama, Hillary, even McCain) in 2008. Mitt's had 5 years to get the gop to love him; it hasn't happened, so he'll have to settle for being tolerated and hopefully eeking out a close win in the general.

I repair Apple products regularly. My Macbook is easier to repair than the Dells & Toshiba's I've used. Only Thinkpads used to be easier to repair but that hasn't been true for awhile.

And I have 22 year old Mac SE/30 that has been recapped and moded and is as good as ever.

Don't blame Apple if the user isn't willing to do what can be done.

My best friend has been a qualified Apple tech for 15 years, and I've fixed PCs professionally for the same time period. I can pop in a new CPU, HDD or any other part in the time it takes him to take the Apple case apart.

BTW, Dell systems suck big time.

It's really hard to find consumer electronics that fit those criteria, though. Especially when you take into account that individual parts are often manufactured in other places before the final product is assembled.

Exactly. It's simplistic to blame everything on the companies who make products in China. And if you look into Apple's business practices, it's just not correct to say they're exploiting workers with no concern for their well-being; they're trying to make things better, far more than most other companies who exploit Chinese labor.

re: #389 ProLifeLiberal

And yet, Apple computers are expensive as all hell, along with their IPhone.

So, we get stuff that is overpriced compared to the competitors. Apple is a status symbol, nothing more.

Many of my friends have had their Macbooks(?) die, or malunction and be unable to repair it. I was able to easily replace a very slowly dying hard-drive, and Firefox produced this 3.7 year old Vista's only BSOD.

You know how I can tell you've never worked in the creative department of a large advertising agency?

These companies depend on their creatives being able to stay late, which requires uninterrupted up time for the equipment creatives use. They can't be calling IT in at 2 in the morning while cramming for a new business bid because some freelancer or client supplied file exposed them to the latest worm or windows exploit. Apple products dominate production studios because they work, with a reliability PC's running Microsoft simply can't match.

468 Charles Johnson  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 8:11:29pm

For example:

In 2006, the Mail on Sunday alleged that sweatshop conditions existed in factories in China, where the contract manufacturers, Foxconn and Inventec, operate the factories that produce the iPod.[46] The article stated that one iPod factory, for instance, had over 200,000 workers that lived and worked in the factory, with workers regularly doing more than 60 hours of labour per week. The article also reported that workers made around $100 per month and were required to live on the premises and pay for rent and food from the company. Living expenses (required to keep the job) generally took up a little over half of the worker's earnings. The article also said that workers were given buckets to wash their clothes.[47][48][49]

Immediately after the allegations, Apple launched an investigation and worked with their manufacturers to ensure that conditions were acceptable to Apple.[50] In 2007, Apple started yearly audits of all its suppliers regarding Worker's Rights, slowly raising standards and pruning suppliers that did not comply.

Their systems are more controlled. Any company can manufacture PC parts and code PC software. Apple realized that freedom would cause problems with poor hardware and software so they tightly control what goes in to their systems.

Their quality does end up being higher than that in PCs, no question.

higher quality, tighter OS controls, but also less versatility, more expensive

The software I rely on every day for my biz is PC only, and I certainly can't afford to buy half a dozen apple laptops to be beater tracking/recording machines for my music noodlings. but I can buy a couple of $100 Lenovo refurbs running XP, and I'm gold!

BMW 3-series versus dodge trucks, is the 3-series a higher quality car? Sure! Can I buy one for pennies and fix it myself? hell no! I ain't paying the apple tax. Can't afford it, and the machine is less versatile, doesn't run to software I need it to run. I fix my own laptops. I have a windows tower machine from a company in the NW that I know the guys who built it by first name, with free labor for life, and still pretty damn cheap. Still over a thousand bucks cheaper than the cheapest Mac Pro, and it's a quad core machine with a gaming card that runs three monitors.

What I think many don't appreciate is that the eastern seaboard of China is no longer a bunch of sweatshops, but rather a ton of very sophisticated high tech manufacturing facilities, with far better working conditions than people imagine. yes hours are long, and wages compared to the west are low. But regionally they continue to grow. China is now the high value manufacturing. the low value sweat shop stuff has moved to Vietnam as well as other parts of South east Asia. Moreover, china manufacturing quality in these factories is on par with American, Japanese, European standards.

Yes -- but people are still repeating outdated stories to smear Apple. When I first heard the sweatshop allegations against Apple I was very concerned too -- but as far as I can tell, Apple has worked hard to try to do the right thing in a difficult situation. FAR more than most other US companies.

Again though, my experiences at OU show this to simply not be true. Apples had died left and right, and yet, this supposedly unreliable Laptop is still chugging along, even being forced to play Fallout 3. By all accounts, my little computer shouldn't be able to.

Dealing with Apple's fans at OU have come to make me hate Apple.

Students are notoriously hard on equipment, laptops in particular, and OU isn't BBDO, Publicis, etc. You're talking about your anecdotal relationship with individuals, I'm talking about an easily researched commonality among virtually every single major advertising agency in America, their creative departments run on Apple. If you'd spent any time at one you'd know the reason why, everyone prefers it that way, from the creatives themselves to the IT departments that support the networks. They prefer it that way because the stakes and salaries are so high that the increased equipment cost is well justified. A hot shot freelancing copywriter and art director team can charge $10K per day, the amortized cost of the equipment you pay for them to work on is the smallest part of pretty much every project's budget.

Masking off certain pins on a Slot 1 Celeron 300MHz with teflon tape so I could overclock it to 450MHz makes me feel old. Upgrading a 386/DX-40 to 4MB RAM so I could run my BBS under OS/2 2.1 makes me feel old.

Gah, my first laptop. DEC branded something, 16mhz 386sx but I sprang the extra several hundred (almost a grand IIRC) for 4 mb. Ran the NT3 beta on it. Bad bad bad. Moved to OS/2 and stayed with that till I gave it away years later. With enough memory anything will run.

That doesn't surprise me. I've always had the feeling that his biggest support came from naive people my age who don't understand the consequences of his proposals.

Huntsman also did better in the graduate college crowd, while Paul not only took the youngsters (by a wide margin) but also the poorly educated.

Bottom line: the Religious Right has painted the GOP into a corner as their guy (Santorum) can't pull in the real libertarians or the non-SoCons, and given the SoCon hatred of Romney it now looks like a lose-lose situation.

In (my rarely done) driving around this afternoon/evening I turned on the local hate-radio (the usual Clear Channel stuff) and heard the churn-churn-churn as the hosts/guests/callers try to deal with why not everyone sees the world through the hate-tinted glasses that they do.

My latest Page has some classic wingnut 'funny FAIL' from our old pal Scott Wheeler. Here's a taste of his email blast (of Burning Stupid):

Saturday night’s debate was supposed to be about jobs and the economy but instead it became an all-out media assault on the GOP field and on our core conservative principles.

Instead of focusing on the failed Obama economy the candidates were discussing gay marriage, contraception, draft dodging and gay marriage again.

Candidates were left ignoring the failed Obama economy while fending off absurd allegations and contrived stats that Stephanopoulos refused to back up or name a source.

The former Clinton attack dog even challenged Ron Paul on newsletters from over 20 years ago that weren’t even written by Ron Paul.

This well-orchestrated event had one sole purpose - leave the GOP field too bruised to take on Obama! These blatant attacks and falsehoods would never be thrown at the “chosen one.” Obama gets another free pass and the GOP field is forced to fight a multi-front war.

Wheeler takes the most malicious explanation possible for the questions asked in the debate while accepting Ron Paul's authorship denials at face value. FAIL so think you need a spoon.

I started with a UNIVAC. :) Then Macintosh. Later PCs. The drafting stuff started with drawing by hand. The ancient art of pencil on vellum or ink on mylar. Using the ancient electric erasers and such. I'm a creature of habit and I already know the ins and outs of PCs. Basically you keep all the junk off the OS drive. If you buy a new off the shelf computer? Take it home and the first thing you should do is format the hard drive and get rid of all the garbage. But yeah you get what you can afford and what you want.

I started with one of these

It's actually really hard. I've had the same guilt problems with some of the things I've had to do in SWTOR to stay Dark. It's not easy to be a supposedly good character and make her evil.

My Smuggler, OTOH, is the smartass with the heart of gold. Heh.

It's kinda why I liked Fallout: New Vegas more than Fallout 3, because the morality system had taken a back seat to the reputation system. You no longer had to worry that stealing everything not nailed down in one town would make you reviled half a map away.

612 Surabaya Stew  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 8:51:58pm

As a former college computer lab monitor with plenty of macs and PCs, here are my feelings re: the reliability of the said platforms:

1. Problems were actually fairly equally divided between Mac and PC, in terms of the quantity of issues users were having.

2. Most problems were caused by user error.

3. Mac errors were usually fixable, users with PC errors were SOL about half the time.

4. Un fixable Mac errors were almost always a result of over taxing the hardware, un fixable PC errors were randomly distributed among various (unknown) causes.

5. Overall, PCs were about 1.25 to 1.5 times more likely to be problematic than macs in terms of solving the issues; a noticeable but not overwhelming difference.

Of course, I'm talking about 1996-1999 here, so today's experiences nay not be comparable.

Yep. What great tragedy we have today. I remember we had to look things up in the family encyclopedia. And if it wasn't there you'd have to wait to go to the library the next day and see if they had the information you were looking for. Sometimes you'd have to read through pages! Read! There wasn't a search function. You'd also have to go through microfilm sometimes. Microfiche. All sorts of things. Then! If you still couldn't find what you were looking for you'd have to send away for information. Which meant writing a letter and waiting for the answer. And that sometimes took well over a month! Sometimes more!

re: #558 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

I figure in 10 years, we'll remember what a "laptop" was and what it was like before WiFi was everywhere.

In 20, we'll tell people what it was like when you had a "desktop" and how you used to keep compressed air around to keep your computer from frying itself from all the dust.

When I was in high school, taking classes at the local JC, the computer was the size of a small car; you had to make an appointment to bring in your stack of punch cards to run a program. When it didn't work (because of course it never did), then you had to go through the punch cards one at a time, the whole huge stack, to find that One. Fucking. Typo. that made the entire afternoon's work into so much confetti.

(a few years later, my roommate had an Apple II with an *awesome* flight simulator -- you could take off from real airports, fly over real cities around real obstacles, and if you flew directly into the WTC there were *BOOM* *EXPLODEY* graphics and sound effects -- which is a big part of why I was so gobsmacked by the Bush administration's insistence that "no one could have predicted...")

One of my uncles kept scamming AOL for the better part of a year. Every time he got low on free hours, he'd ring them up and make noises about canceling his subscription, and the person at the other end would offer him more free hours to keep his subscription, which he'd accept "grudgingly." Eventually he really did end his subscription, but only because he finally got DSL.

Not to worry, plenty of convict labor and poor folks we can force to do the jobs. You just gotta know how to exploit the laws properly.

Nah. Just used interns. INTERNS! Bleh.

Just in case people have forgotten. The reason we had a spike in employment last week? It was for December.

My point is that I don't idolize anything or anyone. At least with 95 percent of things. We just do what we have to do.

I was raised on the idea of "Use what works." If the computer isn't cutting-edge, but does what you need it to do competently, then there's no reason to spend a lot of money you don't have.

Everything is like we're living on the last few seconds of mankind now.
Seriously. It's boring. People need to knock it off now.

It's The End Of The World As We Know It.

Yep. I was raised on pencils. If you wanted to create a work of art you had to make it with your hands. Computers are easy. And I mean easy. What used to take me close to a week now takes me a couple of hours.

8. Masturbating more.

I'm pretty sure the religious right frowns upon this.

That's why I included it. That any me trying to be funny. Which was the intent.

Oh nuts I wasn't reading right. I think it's time to go to sleep.

690 Gus  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 9:46:56pm

And I'm not being serious there either.

Let's be honest, the bulk of human history, of human endeavor, has revolved around the idea of making things that make our lives easier and give us more time to enjoy life. Computers now are simply the next step in that chain. I was just arguing with my sister the other day about the Kindle vs. the book. She championed the book for the experience of reading from one, whether it be the smell, texture, or weight of having a book in your hand. I was in favor of the Kindle because of the convenience of being able to carry an entire library in something the size of a Reader's Digest.

CIA. CIA. Whatever. Some folks... Blech.

696 Gus  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 9:50:00pm

I've got a couple of followers on Twitter that re-Tweet this funky shit. But they're good people deep down. They just sometimes believe this crap. I know people in the meat world like this. They drive me nuts.
