Right Wing Birtherism Is Back (Actually, It Never Left)

Birtherism = racism
Wingnuts • Views: 28,785

Yes, Birtherism is back. That idiotic article at breitbart.com by Joel Pollak has opened the door for the Birthers to come rushing back in, babbling incoherently.

Actually, this craziness never really went away; if you’ve read any right wing blog for the past four years, or the comments at Fox News or Free Republic, you know that the Birther delusion is deeply rooted in today’s right wing psyche. That’s why the breitbart.com article set them off in such spectacular fashion. The right is heavily invested in portraying the first black President as a dangerous, angry, un-American radical “other” from somewhere else, probably Kenya.

Here we see two spokesmen for the politically-connected American Family Association, Buster Wilson and the execrable Bryan Fischer, spouting Birther craziness and conspiracy theories while complaining that they’re being labeled as “Birthers.”

Youtube Video

And at the far right propaganda site Daily Caller, wingnut attack clown Jim Treacher (real name: Sean Medlock) has latched onto a new technique: he’s going to call anyone who criticizes Birthers “Birthers.” Yes, even President Obama himself: Why Was Obama a Birther Until He Decided to Run for President?

UPDATE at 5/20/12 12:22:56 pm

Treacher’s tweets today are bizarre and childish, as usual:

Journalism, Daily Caller style.

There's lots of GOP officials who are birthers. It's pretty goddamn embarassing.

Yet they still hide behind the 'just asking questions' dodge.

Conservatives have lost the ability to stand up for their beliefs. They've always got a fall-back once everybody points out that they're talking crazy talk.

The mainstream GOP does precious little to disassociate itself from Fischer and his ilk.

Has a survey of the general public ever been done to see what percentage are bithers? I'd be surprised if it was much higher than 35.

I don't really understand what they hope to accomplish with this. I don't think anyone is going to suddenly NOT vote for Obama now because they doubt his citizenship. Folks with such beliefs are firmly in the GOP column anyway.

I really think the whole "Obama is Evil" train is starting to run out of steam, especially seeing as uw the haters have resorted to ressurecting birtherism and Jeremiah Wright.

There are no more moderates in the GOP. The ones that are left are either delusional or in denial.

Just as an aside, I wonder if one thing that contributed to birtherism's beginings is the fact that John McCain was born in Panama. He was born on a military base, and given the position of his father in the Navy, there was never any question about his being a natural-born citizen.

I wonder if someone in the McCain camp wanted to defuse any possible controversy about McCain's birthplace with a strategy of "the best defense is a good offense". Make a fuss about the where McCain's opponent (Obama) was born, make a lot of noise, and the controversy about McCain's birth would be neutralized.

Of course, I don't remember there ever being a controversy about McCain's birthplace, so going after Obama's birthplace turned out to be unnecessary, and plain silly. Also, all these years later, it seems quite clear that the motivation for birtherism is racism, pure and simple: Obama is not "one of us". Still, birtherism is so obviously silly, that I sometimes wonder how it got started in the first place.

So Cory Booker is a total slimebag but hey

Since then, the only question in New Jersey has been when – and not if – Booker will seek to run for statewide office. In 2009, the beleaguered Jon Corzine begged him to run for lieutenant governor on his ticket, an offer that Booker wisely refused. He’s often touted as a potential gubernatorial candidate for 2013, but those who know him say his eye is more on the Senate seat now held by 88-year-old Frank Lautenberg, which will be up in 2014.

This is why it’s not at all surprising to see Booker going to bat for private equity. The allies he’s cultivated on Wall Street and in the financial industry (think, for instance, of his chummy relationship with Michael Bloomberg) have made Booker a prolific fundraiser, and when he ventured into the ultra-expensive statewide game, he’ll need them more than ever. Many of them have turned fiercely against Obama over the past few years, convinced that he’s unfairly targeted them. Booker’s words on “Meet the Press” may have enraged the average Obama supporter, but to the Wall Street class they were probably close to heroic – finally, a big-name Democrat with the cojones to call out Obama on his class warfare!

Sarah Palin: Child Labor laws are causing America to fail

In a Facebook post titled “If I Wanted America to Fail, I’d Ban Kids From Farm Work,” Palin wrote,

“The Obama Administration is working on regulations that would prevent children from working on our own family farms. This is more overreach of the federal government with many negative consequences. And if you think the government’s new regs will stop at family farms, think again.”

Her post is in response to US Department of Labor’s plan to update the Fair Labor Standards Act to include the farming industry. For the first time, children would be protected on non-family owned farms. Working with pesticides, lumber mills, animals, manure pits, storage bins, and many other jobs that children are often employed to perform would be regulated. But Sarah Palin doesn’t think America needs to protect kids. She thinks child labor laws make America fail. The problem with Palin’s position is that it’s dangerous and threatens the lives of our kids. Industry has taken advantage of child workers before.

It's like all of them practice selective reading or something.

Modern farming is highly industrialized, and we do not let children work in factories any more than we should let them work on most farms.

Absolutely, there's a big difference between teaching junior to work out in the fields of the family farm (and being sure to choose age appropriate tasks and provide good supervision) and sending him to work for pennies in a factory farm in poor conditions around dangerous equipment.

I actually agree with you on that. I can't wrap my head around the thought process that considered this a good idea.

It's just that it seems whenever more than two "liberals" get together for a protest, you come swooping pointing out the idiot minority. The implication seems to be that somehow things like OWS or G8 protests are comprised of 99% violent thugs.

An image and life that, by and large, no longer exists. Those family farms that still do exist are specifically exempted from the new rules, so the hue and cry from the likes of Palin and other RWNJs is completely false and self-serving.

Egypt: Owner of belly dancing TV station arrested

Egypt's vice police on Thursday arrested the owner of a belly dancing TV station on suspicion of operating without a license, inciting licentiousness and facilitating prostitution, a security official said.
...
The raid was prompted by complaints from viewers, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media.

Besides the belly dancing, the station also carries advertisements for sexual enhancement products and matchmaking messages.

Hamdy is accused of airing ads that offend public decency, the official said.

Belly danging - The Middle East Restrictions

Today many Middle Eastern countries forbid women to perform the dance. During the 1950's, bellydancing was declared illegal in Egypt. After a popular uprising ensued, the government repealed the ban with one condition -- that dancers no longer show their stomachs. (That law still remains in effect.)

Occupy Journalists Stopped, Searched, Handcuffed & Interrogated at Gunpoint

The episode was not an isolated incident. @Ghostpickles and @Korgasm who have both been covering Occupy since the early days, reported being interrogated by CPD with others in the middle of the night.

“Ghostpickles” and “Korgasm” (and another person) were sitting by a fence on the side of the road. They were waiting for a ride when a police SUV crept up.

Earlier in the day, something similar but much worse happened. According to “Ghostpickles,” the police “jumped” them. When they went to park their car, they got out and two SUVs full of cops jumped out. The police pushed the group against the vehicles. The police would not identify themselves. They would not explain why they were being cuffed or detained. Their vehicle, including all the property inside, was impounded by the cops.

Wis. Militia Men Brought Shotgun Ammo, Knives: Cops

Chicago Police stopped a pair of Racine, Wisconsin men Saturday who allegedly traveled to Chicago with multiple shells, extended ammunition clips and knives in their car, according Chicago Police News Affairs.

One man, Michael Yocco, of 4151 Carter Street in Racine, has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of ammunition without a FOID card, and carrying a dangerous weapon, but not a gun, police said. The other has been released, police said.

The men were arrested on the 300 block of North Canal Street in their vehicle. Both were clad in militia outfits and their car bore anarchist flags, police said.

Police believe the men were here to protest NATO.

Can we at least admit that if the left is so vehement about protesting Obama, it must be because they don't think he's one of them?

They've been complaining about that for several years actually -- it's much to their dismay that he's not at all a leftist. He's a pragmatic, incrementalist centrist; no matter how many times the right wing tries to call him a socialist or a radical he just isn't.

Congressmen Seek To Lift Propaganda Ban

An amendment that would legalize the use of propaganda on American audiences is being inserted into the latest defense authorization bill, BuzzFeed has learned.

The amendment would “strike the current ban on domestic dissemination” of propaganda material produced by the State Department and the Pentagon, according to the summary of the law at the House Rules Committee's official website.

The tweak to the bill would essentially neutralize two previous acts—the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 and Foreign Relations Authorization Act in 1987—that had been passed to protect U.S. audiences from our own government’s misinformation campaigns.

The bi-partisan amendment is sponsored by Rep. Mac Thornberry from Texas and Rep. Adam Smith from Washington State.

See, that's the thing. Classical liberalism belongs to the 18th century. Declaring yourself a classical liberal now, post-labor movement, post-suffrage, post-New Deal, is not in any way clear.

I mean, does it mean that you agree with the classical liberals who thought that poverty was a good thing, that starvation would help limit population growth?

Do you think that government should act to smash unions?

Are you saying that you think that private property rights are the highest good? That laissez-faire economics are what you prefer, and labor rights are unjust interferences in those rights?

Or are you just picking a term with enough vagueness and wiggle room to support your lazy, inconsistent contrarianism?

I still think you should just say you're a performance artist. It'd be easier than claiming a coherent philosophy.

Elements of the far right also protest NATO. In fact, it's very likely that the Stormfronters who were attacked in the restaurant were in Chicago for the protests, with the "economic summit" as a bonus activity. They see NATO as a tool of Zionists, etc. A lot of Paulian isolationists really hate NATO as well. To them, it is a "foreign entanglement" of the kind about Washington warned us. To real bat guano survivalist types, NATO is a prime source of the foreign authority (and troops) Obama will use to enforce the big roundup of dissidents and their guns and Bibles.

Classical liberalism is actually closer to today's Tea Party than contemporary Liberals in terms of political beliefs.

I don't know who here has read/suffered through Jonah Goldberg's Liberal Fascism but in that book he goes on at GREAT length about the distinct differences between modern Liberalism and "classical liberalism". I put that in quote as I'm not sure Goldberg uses the correct facts about classical liberalism in his book. It could well be he presents a view of it designed to match the aim of the book which is, obviously, to vilify modern Liberals.

This is same book by the way, that dedicates a whole chapter to the argument that Hitler was, in fact, a raging Left winger.

No, he's reasonably correct. Classical liberalism is against social liberalism-- against the government helping out the poor. It's anti-labor-- one of the duties of the state under classical liberalism is to smash unions as a barrier to free trade. It enshrines property rights as among the highest rights, and is suspicious of anything other than the most minor, law-and-order and contract-enforcing form of government. "Classical liberal", in the modern paradigm, is 'conservative'.

Australian Politician says IVF for Lesbians a threat to men

A PUSH to allow lesbians access to IVF is undermining the traditional family and writing off fathers, Liberal MP Martin Hamilton-Smith says.

Labor MP Ian Hunter has introduced a Bill to Parliament to allow fertile same-sex couples, or single women, to access assisted reproductive technology.

It has passed the Upper House on a conscience vote and is being debated by Lower House MPs. Only women deemed infertile can now access IVF, which is part government-funded.

Mr Hamilton-Smith has spoken against the Bill, saying he is "standing up for the role of the father in child rearing".

A father of a son, stepson and stepdaughter himself, Mr Hamilton-Smith said the proposed law was "undermining the fabric of society ... undermining the family unit as it has traditionally been known".

He said it would allow a woman to "go out and, through an act of technology, have a child out of wedlock without any father being involved at any time".

"They can decide to just go off and have a baby using IVF ... I am just going to have this child; it is all about me ... I think there is something wrong about that," he said.

While Mr Hamilton-Smith said gay relationships "deserve to be valued and accepted by the community" he stopped short of supporting gay marriage or access to IVF.

I don't know much about Australian politics but something seems backward here. A LIBERAL politician is saying these things?

Not really, in this case. Classical liberalism really does diverge, as you admit easily, from modern liberalism. The main way that it diverges is over the subjects of labor rights, welfare rights, etc. Classical liberals do not believe that the government should-- on a moral or economic level-- provide welfare and subsidence to its citizens.

The change from the 18th century largely agrarian existence to the more modern and industrialized nation, and the expansion of the franchise of voting to a much broader class of people than under Jefferson, Franklin, Paine etc. made classical liberalism an archaic philosophy, unsuited to the modern world.

The historical revisionism, I'd say, would be pretending that 'classical liberal' has meaning when applied to the 21st century.

And you know, I didn't know much of anything about Goldberg before I read the book (or at least tried to, I never finished it) and going through it (which is daunting, it's a challenging read, Goldberg's not the greatest writer) I just kept thinking the stuff this was guy was saying seemed a little "off". It just didn't seem to fit the historical events which he was referring to. I guess I should have known better.

That's all over the world. But I agree that the police in the USA (and across the world) has morphed into a para-military organization complete with armored vehicles, air supports, sniper teams, etc. A lot of these changes took place soon after 9/11. There was a lot money flowing around so a lot of small town police departments took advantage of this and took part in changing into para-military organizations. Along the way came the expansion of police powers not limited to those found in the Patriot Act but through court decisions. Now I'm not saying we live in some tyrannical state but the means for running a tyrannical state are certainly there.

I'm sorry that your various mental problems cause you such agony. I really am. But you're letting them absolutely define you as a person. You're saying you're completely impotent to push back against them whatsoever, and that your solution is just that you're going to indulge your rage addiction-- which is, if I'm not mistaken, one of the very first problems you were ever diagnosed with.

You're not going to attain mental health by pitting some of your demons against your other demons. Expression of anger isn't going to get you intimacy with anyone.

Autists really are behind ten different eight-balls in our society, and it really sucks for you, but you're not making it easier on yourself by indulging your anger; the anger is not a solution, the anger is part of the problems that you have. You know this.

Yes, this.

Channeling anger and/or frustration into some sort of martial arts or boxing training is actually a good idea. It's amazing how therapeutic a few rounds with a punching bag is. A friend of mine is a Krav Maga instructor. He swears by it for fitness AND stress relief.

Take up running. Take a few meditation courses. Find something that you like to do that involves getting away from all your usual stress/anger triggers. Medication and counseling only go so far. Getting physical activity and finding hobbies and things outside of yourself are also great ways of dealing with stress.

That too. Music is my therapy. I plug in my iPod and put on music that gets my mind going in a positive direction.

The main thing is that dealing with stress and anger issues has to involve finding constructive ways to channel that energy. Medication and counseling are good, but they're not an instant cure. It takes hard work and really taking a hard look at yourself to figure out what your triggers are and how to best deal with them, and how to take that energy and use it in a more positive way.

it turns out that there's nothing an invented Dick Armey group has to do with actual grassroots protesting :D

As much as the authoritarian oldsters here fuss and complain and copypasta links day after day about OWS, they already got theirs, they're already sitting pretty with cash, property, families, good jobs that they won't be shitcanned from at a moment's notice, so of course they don't care.

Doens't affect them! They got theirs. Satisfied and safe.

Whereas young people who are being fucked over in this depression (and I agree with Krugman, that is what it is) we see things differently.

The rules have been fixed, income inequality is vast compared to 30 years ago, and that's just a fact. And likely irreversible.

But I digress! Stay turned for Killgore's very important poop coverage! We're so proud! Keeping us up to date! LGF's finest journalist! I'll be over where the actual coverage is, with the "koskids" and other such enemies of america :D

I'm being fucked over in this depression. I'm just hanging on by my goddamned fingernails at the moment.

I don't see Occupy as offering me, or the country, much of anything.

Hi Wrenchwench,

Thanks for asking...
It was great...
I found the people that I met to be very friendly.
I can see for the first time why its called 'The land of opportunity'.
People say the California is expensive, but hey, I found it to be cheap comparative to Australia.

Cheap cars.
Cheap fuel, yes even at $4odd per gallon
Cheap housing.
Cheap electricity.
Courteous drivers
Met a nurse, straight out of graduation, who earns $3ph more than my wife who has been in nursing 26 years, and who is often 'Hospital in charge'.

You are very blessed....

Loved LA and San Francisco, Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Napa Valley.
Santa Monica Pier, Venice beach. Santa Barbara, Carmel, and Monteray all fantastic places.
Saw grand Canyon at sunrise and sunset, it took my breath away, honestly.

We did 4500 miles in a 21 day driving holiday.

Got married by Elvis in Vegas, the photos show my wife and I fixated on this 6'5" Elvis.
I have been looking at the property market ever since.

Best story, went to a 'dueling piano' pub in Pleasanton CA, great fun, locals bought us drinks when they found out we were 'just married'.
Black and tan, black and tan, black and tan, bra on yer head, courtesy of one of the piano players.

The solar eclipse has started. I built a solar image projector with cardboard and binoculars. It works much better than pinhole optics. I have a 3" image of the sun projected onto white cardboard. In the bay area we'll have 89% totality. 52 minutes until maximum.

Cheap HOUSING? Dude, I though you were Australian, not Japanese. No one ever tells us we have cheap housing.

Except for the Japanese.

We are ground zero for the housing market crash which fucked over the global economy so it stands to reason that housing here probably seems pretty cheap to everyone else.

Giving it a few minutes to think about it, that first post was irrational.

Since last year, my ability to deal with Politics has probably slipped. In a pattern that I have had for a while, the lonelier and more frustrated I feel, the more I delve into and internalize my politics. I probably need to cool down for a while. Not sure how though. I get really self-conscious about the fact that I am much weaker than average physically.

SFV,

Truly, I fell in love with the place, also I forgot, food is so cheap too...

One complaint if I may.
Fricken concrete highways, duck-a-duck, duck-a-duck, duck-a-duck, even makes a bmw seem noisy.

Also oddly, I loved the drive from LA to Vegas, its a beautiful desert.
And back to LA, from the Grand Canyon, via the Joshua Tree National Park.

re: #231 ProGunLiberal

I'll smash him for his callous ideals anyway.

His ideals led to the death of over a million during the Irish Potato Famine. Classical Liberalism was disproven in the Presidency of James Polk

British Policies were so bad, the Ottoman Empire, in its weakened state, got into a diplomatic squabble over its neglect of the Irish.

KT is perfectly okay with seeing kids starve.

Sorry to rekindle this but as much as I think that Killgore has been a pain in the rear end (x20 at times) since October I think this assessment is way off. Especially that bit about "seeing kids starve."

Others have had, and continue to have, way more patience with you than I, and I'm starting to feel like you're taking advantage of it. Some of the people here have serious problems they're dealing with as well, but they don't take it out on others. I'm not sure why you feel you have the right to do so—we don't owe you a damned thing.

You know what your problem is. You know you need help. Get it in the meatworld. We cannot give it to you here. Sorry your life is sucks, but at the end of the day you're the one who has to live it. Fix it, or continue suffering. Your life, your choice. Grow up, for your own sake.

Krugman says it better than I can

Given this history, how can you not applaud the protesters for finally taking a stand?

Now, it’s true that some of the protesters are oddly dressed or have silly-sounding slogans, which is inevitable given the open character of the events. But so what? I, at least, am a lot more offended by the sight of exquisitely tailored plutocrats, who owe their continued wealth to government guarantees, whining that President Obama has said mean things about them than I am by the sight of ragtag young people denouncing consumerism.

Bear in mind, too, that experience has made it painfully clear that men in suits not only don’t have any monopoly on wisdom, they have very little wisdom to offer. When talking heads on, say, CNBC mock the protesters as unserious, remember how many serious people assured us that there was no housing bubble, that Alan Greenspan was an oracle and that budget deficits would send interest rates soaring.

If Prince Charles ever gets tired of his current gig, he can always become a TV weatherman; apparently, he and Camilla were visiting a Scottish TV station sometime recently and each of them got on the air during different segments.

I heard the audio of Charles doing the weather and he was quite good at it, in that buttoned-down British way; however, all I could think about was the intro to this (the album version works much better for this purpose, but a live version will have to do):
