American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists: Statement on Rape and Pregnancy

Contradicts basic biological truths
Politics • Views: 24,303

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has issued a statement on Todd Akin’s insane counter-factual claim that women who are raped can secrete a special vagina venom to terminate “legitimate rape” sperm: ACOG - Statement on Rape and Pregnancy.

Washington, DC — Recent remarks by a member of the US House of Representatives suggesting that “women who are victims of ‘legitimate rape’ rarely get pregnant” are medically inaccurate, offensive, and dangerous.

Each year in the US, 10,000–15,000 abortions occur among women whose pregnancies are a result of reported rape or incest. An unknown number of pregnancies resulting from rape are carried to term. There is absolutely no veracity to the claim that “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down.” A woman who is raped has no control over ovulation, fertilization, or implantation of a fertilized egg (ie, pregnancy). To suggest otherwise contradicts basic biological truths.

Any person forced to submit to sexual intercourse against his or her will is the victim of rape, a heinous crime. There are no varying degrees of rape. To suggest otherwise is inaccurate and insulting and minimizes the serious physical and psychological repercussions for all victims of rape.

To suggest otherwise is also the position of the Republican Party, which has sponsored bills in many states and in Congress to redefine rape as “forcible rape” in order to criminalize abortion for rape victims.

How can you really trust a bunch of perverted doctors who spend their days looking at womanly bits? Wouldn't the Bible, or at least men dedicated to interpreting God's will, be a much more trustworthy source?

Seriously though, how do these people who know absolutely nothing about the subjects they've been put in charge of keep getting into such positions of power over it?

Charles, I'd clarify your subtitle to explicitly state that the GOP contradicts basic biological truths. Akin was only the most vocal and prominent to peddle this BS. But it's the same festering mess that others in the GOP have been pushing for years.

It has no basis in science or biology, but it is wholly attuned to their religious beliefs and misguided beliefs about women in general.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Jason Richman and David Zabel (who produced ABC's Detroit 1-8-7) are developing the Finn & Sawyer pilot for ABC, which will revolve around the two troublemakers who meet again as 20-somethings and open up an investigation firm in retrofuturistic New Orleans.

One more darkly evil and deeply rippling undercurrent to this religion driven definition: some traditionalist and fundamentalist sects would really like to get rid of the concept of statutory rape so they can rape their child brides legally.

When I was young we lived across the st. from a traditionalist Irish Catholic family with 9 children at last count. They used rhythm method, which only worked until Jack got drunk and raped Jean. This is the point that she would wind up sobbing on our doorstep with a black eye, and my mom would lie to Jack later and tell him that Jean wasn't at our house while my sister and I babysat the 9 children. Sometimes he would push into the house anyway, but we always let Jean hide in our crawlspace under the back closet. Later after we got transferred Jean committed suicide.

Conservative Columnist Suggests Akin’s Rape Comments Are ‘Explainable,’ Touts Junk Science

Matt Lewis, a senior columnist at the Daily Caller, is unfortunately not one of the prominent conservative pundits who have called for Akin to withdraw from his current senate race in Missouri. Instead, although Lewis admits that there doesn’t “seem” to be any science to back up Akin’s claims about rape and conception, he still uses his column to speculate about similar junk science that contributes to Akin’s rape mythology:

I’ve heard speculation that women are perhaps more likely to conceive with a partner they deem successful or handsome — or that they are in love with. Others believe that female orgasm actually increases the odds of conception. This may or may not be junk science. But it would at least provide context. Is that what he was getting at? [...]

This is obviously a serious conundrum. [...] Having said, that, the national media tends to overplay such scandals. Can Akin explain himself and put it behind him? I think it depends how he explains himself.

The fact that Lewis lays out wild theories that “may or may not be junk science” gives a platform to dangerous distortions about women’s bodies. In fact, neither female attraction nor female orgasm have anything to do with the science behind fertility and conception. Nevertheless, these myths have permeated the discourse among radical anti-choice circles throughout the past several decades, and have made their way into politicians’ mouths before. As Mother Jones points out, this type of junk science is so widespread that Planned Parenthood includes it as a frequently asked question on its site: “I’ve heard that a woman can’t get pregnant from getting raped. Is that true?”

Concerned Women for America Defends 'Pussy Riot' Convictions

Have the women repented or taken responsibility for their actions? Their formal statements about the incident reveal their utter lack of morality, embrace of a "blame-everyone-but-us" ideology, and disdain for capitalism and individual responsibility. Like their U.S. counterparts, they want "human rights, civil and political freedoms" for themselves but not for Christian believers or anyone else with different beliefs.

The media -- both in Russia and in the U.S. -- ignores the religious bigotry directed at Christianity and, instead, jumps to the defense of anyone who shows intolerance towards the church. It is apparent from the closing statements of the three Russian feminists on trial that they are not sorry for their actions and, in fact, view themselves as the victims, not the Christians that they denigrated. The punk rock group entered the sanctuary with the intent to insult Christians, and when they were held accountable, they claimed that it was someone else's fault.

If you want to rage against that which you perceive to be unjust or unfair, it would go a long way toward credibility to also accept responsibility for your actions.

For all their talk about the 2nd amendment and self-defense. It is only for them and their ilk. Not anyone else--especially women who aren't their wives.

Actually, there's a precise parallel between the way they talk about self defense and the right to abortion.

"Legitimacy" of self-defense or of a claim to rape is encoded into legislation, but left intentionally vague...but when you look at how legitimacy is discerned it amounts to--the more privilege you have, the more likely you get legitimacy; if you can't invoke privilege (white, cisgender, straight, Christian, male) you're automatically less legitimate.

What apology?

I know. I am going to use their kind of apologies on the right wingers and see how it flies with them.

Me: You are a fucking lowlife scum sucking pig.
Them: You shouldn't have said that, apologies this instant!
ME: Ok, I'm sorry I had to tell you what a fucking lowlife scum sucking pig you are.

re: #7 Kragar

How can you really trust a bunch of perverted doctors who spend their days looking at womanly bits? Wouldn't the Bible, or at least men dedicated to interpreting God's will, be a much more trustworthy source?

Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), the Bible contains almost no information on conception, when it happens, how it works, or whether rape-rape or not-real-rape affects it. The men of the Bible see this sort of thing as basically being between women and God, and kind of hope for the best.

Congratulations--You have a bust of a fat manic-depressive racist with a permanent hard-on for war.

Out of those, I'm only gonna disapprove on him on the grounds of the racism, which did sort of come built into his upbringing.

Concerned Women for America Defends 'Pussy Riot' Convictions

Two years in a fucking Russian prison. Two of those women have small children. They would have gone for the maximum sentence if it hadn't drawn such worldwide attention.

By all means, wring your hands about 'responsibility'.

CWA are morons.

Republicans.

Dunno, I heard pretty much the same defense on this site from someone who certainly wouldn't cop to Republicanism.

I know better that to try and bring a little fact in when you guys are already swarming, however the term Forcible rape is not a republican term.

Forcible rape, as defined in the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, is the carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and against her will. Attempts or assaults to commit rape by force or threat of force are also included;

Right. The Republican term is "Legitimate Rape".

Right. The Republican term is "Legitimate Rape".

No that is Akins term, and not Republican. Just as Israel Apartheid is President Carters term and not the entire democratic party.

The House GOP's Plan to Redefine Rape
Drugged, raped, and pregnant? Too bad. Republicans are pushing to limit rape and incest cases eligible for government abortion funding.

On Thursday, House Republicans, facing an onslaught of outside pressure, decided to remove the controversial "forcible rape" provision from their "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act."
(see: House GOP Caves On Redefining Rape Bill)

The original language from the Hyde Amendment—which bans federal funding for abortions through Medicaid except in cases of rape, incest, or to save a mother's life—will replace the "forcible" provision, said a spokesman for Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.), who introduced the bill. The move comes in response to heavy criticism in recent days from outside advocacy groups including MoveOn.org and Emily's List and the growing #dearjohn campaign, aimed at House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), that opposed the abortion funding bill. Read more about about the House GOP's backtracking here. Nick Baumann's original story on the GOP's attempts to redefine rape is below.]

Rape is only really rape if it involves force. So says the new House Republican majority as it now moves to change abortion law.
