Post-Debate Open Thread

The debate hasn’t stopped

Yes, LGF is running slowly today, I know. It’s because traffic is very high, and our speedy new database server is outrunning our outdated web server, causing latency because the web server can’t keep up. The good news: the new state of the art web server is being installed tonight at 6pm Pacific.

Meanwhile, since the debate about the debate is still raging, here’s an open thread to continue the discussion. And while we’re at it, read Nate Silver’s take on the post-debate polls: Instant Reaction Polls Show Narrow Obama Advantage in Second Debate.

Another stand out from last night's "debate" is how precious oil and coal are to us.

So, we might as well prepare for the inevitable:

Too late to stop global warming by cutting emissions

Governments and institutions should focus on developing adaption policies to address and mitigate against the negative impact of global warming, rather than putting the emphasis on carbon trading and capping greenhouse-gas emissions, argue Johannesburg-based Wits University geoscientist Dr Jasper Knight and Dr Stephan Harrison from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom.

"At present, governments' attempts to limit greenhouse-gas emissions through carbon cap-and-trade schemes and to promote renewable and sustainable energy sources are prob¬ably too late to arrest the inevitable trend of global warming," the scientists write in a paper published online in the scientific journal, Nature Climate Change, on Monday, 14 October 2012.

Not related to the debate but very troubling info coming out of Gaza...

Israel: Gaza getting missiles from Libyan war

A top Israeli defense official says Gaza is being flooded with sophisticated weapons from Libya and that the anti-aircraft missile fired last week at an Israeli helicopter likely originated there.

Yossi Kuperwasser, who directs the Ministry of Strategic Affairs, says "significant" numbers of weapons have been smuggled into the territory from Libya since the fall last year of dictator Moammar Gadhafi. The country is awash in weapons after the eight-month civil war and has weak central authority.

Palestinian militants in Gaza launched a shoulder-fired Strela missile at an Israeli helicopter last week, but missed. It was the first such launch from Gaza.

Kuperwasser said Wednesday that Israel has long assumed that Gaza militants have kept such weapons, but probably only fired them after they amassed a large enough stockpile.

Reposting this from the previous thread just for fun...I think I'm going to do these updates from time to time as I enjoy the numbers side of a presidential race quite a lot:

In the world of polling, Gallup wandered quite a way off from the consensus today, showing a 6-point lead nationally for Governor Romney. Almost all other recent polls show a 1-point lead in either direction. Gallup looking like an outlier, especially with state polling showing that President Obama continues to hold leads (albeit razor-thin ones) in key swing states.

Current Mongoose Quasi-Scientific Projection (if vote were held today): Obama 281, Romney 257.

Yes, it's been clear for a while that the international right wing disinformation campaign against climate science was very successful in confusing the general public.

These disgusting people are going to be responsible for putting the human race -- and their own children and grand-children -- in serious peril, all for short term profits.

In a related issue, this looks to be Europe's worst grape harvest in 50 years, largely due to a continent-wide drought. That will affect agricultural jobs across the region, to say nothing of the prices and quality of the wines that are brought to market.

There was a lot of important ground covered in last night's debate. Immigration, Tax Policy, Equal treatment of women in the workplace, America's energy future, Education, Gun laws.

But despite all of that, the majority of discussion today is hair splitting over the words "terror" and "terrorism" and the context they were used in last month.

Time to get out of there. Japan and South Korea are well able to defend themselves. As a student of history, I am not over-joyed at the prospect of a re-militarized Japan. Nevertheless, the Rape of Nanking is 75 years in the past, the Bataan Death March 70. We should never forget or minimize these things, but we should also recognize that Japanese democracy has been built block by block for over 60 years and is now mature enough to be trusted.

You going to bother mentioning the manner in which you pulled the number out of your ass? 'cuz without methedology, it's kinda boring.

I'm projecting each state based on recent polls, weighted for certain factors like size, in combination with national polls. It's quasi-scientific in that it uses data rather than raw intuition or what I want to happen, but isn't a real statistical model by any means. I do it for fun.

Whereas a site like fivethirtyeight can make a truly scientific projection, I don't have that kind of time or statistical genius, so any number I come up with will always be a possible real outcome, since I'm doing it state by state. 538 uses a continuous model, so it will usually generate numbers that could never happen, but it's much more rigorous. For example, right now Mr. Silver has the race at 282.9 to 255.1 in his now-cast.

38 Charles Johnson  Wed, Oct 17, 2012 10:51:26am

The most important point Silver makes about the post-debate polls:

How much will the debate move the head-to-head polls between Mr. Romney and Mr. Obama? Actually, the instant-reaction polls may not be very much help in answering that question. The relationship between the quick-reaction polls and their eventual effect on the horse-race polls has historically been very modest, and has sometimes even run in the opposite direction of what the initial polls suggested. Debates sometimes look different in the rear-view mirror, depending on news media coverage, YouTube and cable news highlights, word of mouth, and subsequent developments on the campaign trail.

re: #38 Charles Johnson

Unwinding that verbiage: The post-debate spin may have as great or greater effect on the race than the debate itself so the initial read by exit polls from the debate don't always track with the overall polling.

There are something like 25,000 US military personnel in Okinawa. Assuming they represented a rape rate equal to that of the United States as a whole, we would expect something like five or six rapes per year.

They're not a representative sample of the United States population, of course, but it's a worthwhile number to keep in mind.

Wedlock? Really? Because, IIRC, back in the 70's we learned that getting married because of pregnancy was a really bad idea. Putting to people together who didn't want to be married and having an unwanted child just doesn't work out that well.

Sorry to go OT, but I am absolutely livid right now.

I start work next Tuesday. I need to move across town to do it. I'd found a sublet that would work for me -- it was in my price range, and the lease owner was willing to let me move in and start work and get a couple of paychecks under my belt before we would switch the lease over to me. We talked on the phone and decided this on Saturday.

Today she tells me that she wants me to go through the lease application process instead, AFTER I've already started packing and getting ready to move, and after getting money from my family to help me pay for the deposit and the first month's rent that we'd already agreed on.

With my student loan debts, getting through the application process is pretty much a lost cause. Barring a miracle, this means I'll be living in some shitty motel with weekly rates until I can get paid and get in somewhere that won't crucify me for having those debts. ARGH.

re: #73 Lidane

ARGH.

Hang in there. There's sometimes more room for compromise with these things than there seems at first. Landlords hate having empty units...every week is lost revenue they can never recover. Hope you can make a deal or find a better alternative. Good luck!

@Gus #55

Love that binder.
Interesting that even the binder story turns out to be a lie. Sigh.
