The good news is, Ann Romney will be on the View tomorrow morning and she'll clear all this shit up once and for all...

Ann: "My husband loves women. I love women! I love you women!"
Hasselback: "We're not in the RNC convention anymore."
Goldberg: "What the hell was your husband thinking?"
Walters: "Let's move onto a subject you know something about...tell me about those shoes you have on."
Behar: "I need a drink."

Town Hall Attendees Still Standing Patiently Waiting For Their Questions To Be Answered

More than 15 hours after the conclusion of the second presidential debate, sources confirmed members of the town-hall audience who asked questions last night are still standing in the now-empty hall at Hofstra University, note cards in hand, patiently waiting for the candidates to actually provide them with answers.

Bit of a crazy thought process. This random town-hall-debate person asked a straight-up question of your candidate, who then did not handle it artfully. You must cocoon your candidate from the mean ol' scary world at all costs, so you go dig up dirt on the questioner in order to... something. Scare the Soviets, I dunno.

For this to be a logical and rational course of action, precisely how pathetic must you find your candidate?

One side wants to see the country prosper regardless of which party holds the White House. The other side has openly stated that their number one objective is beating the president, and have given the country a back seat to that priority.

Super PAC Eyes Effort To ‘Bury Duckworth’ With $2.5 Million In Negative Ads

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Tuesday night that Now or Never, a super PAC that has already spent nearly $2 million on the race, was going to put in another $2.5 million for negative ads against the Democrat. According to its anonymous source, the goal would be “bury Duckworth.”

However, a spokesman for Now or Never told TPM the group is not yet made the final call to fork over the additional $2.5 million. “No final decisions have been made,” spokesman Tyler Harber said. “But we do have the resources and we’re very serious about continuing the fight in Illinois 8.”

One question is whether it would even be possible to buy up that much TV time in the final three weeks of the election.

Illinois Republican: Do civil unions mean ‘somebody can get married to their dog?’

Illinois State Rep. John Cabello (R-Rockford) reportedly told a tea party group earlier this month that he’s not clear whether his state’s civil union law applies to humans, or if “somebody can get married to their dog” as well.

The comments were made during the Rockford Tea Party forum on October 6, according to a Wednesday report by Kate Sosin at Windy City Times. Video of Cabello’s speech was published to YouTube, but the paper said that access to the footage was revoked after they called the tea party group for comment.

Reached by Raw Story, Cabello’s aides had no comment, explaining they hadn’t seen the report. No calls were returned after a copy of the report was forwarded to both his district office and his office at the capital, and a message left with his campaign went unanswered.

In a move that brings the Romney campaign precariously close to the venue of the candidate's 47 percent blunder, it is scheduled to rake in contributions at three invite-only fundraisers in Boca Raton, Florida. One of the hosts for these events is Marc Leder, the controversial private equity fund manager who gained notoriety in 2011 for a bacchanalian party he threw in the Hamptons. Leder held the $50,000-per-plate fundraiser at his Boca mansion in May where Romney delivered his "47 percent" rant. But he's not the only member of the host committee with baggage. The organizers of this big-dollar fundraising spree include Mike and Irene Milin, a husband-wife team who have made a career out of peddling get-rich-quick schemes that state attorneys general have blasted as "deceptive," "unconscionable," and "illegal."...

World's biggest geoengineering experiment 'violates' UN rules

A controversial American businessman dumped around 100 tonnes of iron sulphate into the Pacific Ocean as part of a geoengineering scheme off the west coast of Canada in July, a Guardian investigation can reveal.

Lawyers, environmentalists and civil society groups are calling it a "blatant violation" of two international moratoria and the news is likely to spark outrage at a United Nations environmental summit taking place in India this week.
...
Scientists are debating whether iron fertilisation can lock carbon into the deep ocean over the long term, and have raised concerns that it can irreparably harm ocean ecosystems, produce toxic tides and lifeless waters, and worsen ocean acidification and global warming.

"It is difficult if not impossible to detect and describe important effects that we know might occur months or years later," said John Cullen , an oceanographer at Dalhousie University. "Some possible effects, such as deep-water oxygen depletion and alteration of distant food webs, should rule out ocean manipulation. History is full of examples of ecological manipulations that backfired."

Doesn't realize that without student loans, college will return to being an aristocracy, where only the rich and smartest get education while the "normals" have to settle for manual labor.

And he doesn't realize that without federal loan money coming in, colleges will have to raise their tuition drastically to cover costs (thus making it even more of an aristocracy) and/or cut out a huge portion of their research. Making education in this country even worse, at a time when we're falling behind the rest of the world.

Update on those drone strikes a few days ago....
Belgian militant killed in tribal area drone raid

A Belgian-Tunisian Al Qaeda recruiter who allegedly mentored an extremist who shot dead seven people in France this year has been killed in Pakistan, according to the US monitoring service SITE.

SITE said a post on an extremist web forum on Monday announced the death of Moez Garsalloui, who had claimed responsibility for one of the attacks carried out by Mohamed Merah in the southern French city of Toulouse in March.

Garsalloui was a jihadist recruiter and propagandist formerly based in Belgium and Switzerland, SITE said, who remained focused on signing up militants to attack targets in Europe even after moving to the battlefields and training camps of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The post announcing Garsalloui’s death said he was killed in a “raid”, SITE said without elaborating, having previously escaped bombings in Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan district of Pakistan’s lawless tribal areas.

No details of the raid were given but the jihadi website announcement appeared a few days after two US drone strikes in North Waziristan killed 23 people, according to Pakistani security sources.

The recent poll of GOP voters that showed 2/3rd of them are hostile to university professors really shocked me, but it actually fits with all the rest. It's part of the myth of entreprenurial capitalism, I think, that wealth in this country is produced by people starting companies and investing and all the rest.

And it's a myth. The engine of wealth is research and education, and the fuel is labor. Capital can provide a framework, but that's all. Without research, technology, education, companies can never do anything new. They capitalize and exploit scientific breakthroughs.

And that's fine. That's how it's supposed to work. But for fuck's sake, give credit where credit is due. The wealth and power of the United States stems from the amazing research and scientific discovery that's gone on at its government labs, its universities, and the ferocious economic machine of the US comes from educated, highly productive workers with an amazing work ethic.

Credit where credit is due. That's all I'm asking for. Stop shitting on the teachers, GOP, for fuck's sake.

Effen Dennis Miller.. The man who single handily ruined Monday night Football.
Smart ass and obscure references turned fans off from day one.
Back in 2009 on Easter night me and my buds got 4 free FEDEX Suite tickets to a Pacers game. After a day of drinking beer we stumbled into the Elevator and who was in there with us. Dennis Miller. We started laughing uncontrollably knowing Paulie was going to say something to Miller. Paulie a bear of a man with long flowing dark hair towered over 5'6" Miller. I'm sure Miller regretted not being with his security team that night. I'm laughing begging Paulie not to get us thrown in jail before the game.
When we got to Miller's suite Miller had to walk around Paulie to get out.
Paulie didn't move and looked down on him and said, Say something funny now funny boy..We fell down laughing and Miller quickly exited the elevator and hustled down the hall. Classic moment

Libya questioner: Obama gave better answer in private

Kerry Ladka, the undecided voter in Tuesday night’s debate who wanted to know who had denied requests for extra security for U.S. outposts in Libya before the Sept. 11 attack there, told our colleague Erik Wemple that he was not satisfied with the answer he got from President Obama.

Wemple reviewed the transcript and agreed with Ladka that the president sidestepped the question.

Ladka said Obama found him after the debate and discussed the issue in more detail, explaining that naming a specific person who denied the request would have put that person at risk.

“I appreciate his private answer more than his public answer,” Ladka told Wemple. But in the end, he was still undecided about his vote.

Another pro-slavery letter to the editor by GOP Arkansas state Rep. Loy Mauch, this one from back in 2003 has come to light...

Feb. 15, 2003

Nowhere in the Holy Bible have I found a word of condemnation for the operation of slavery, Old or New Testament. If slavery was so bad, why didn’t Jesus, Paul or the prophets say something?

This country already lionizes Wehrmacht leaders. They go by the names of Lincoln, Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Custer, etc. These Marxists not only destroyed the Constitution they were sworn to uphold, but apostatized the word of God. Either these depraved infidels or the Constitution and Scriptures are in error. I’m more persuaded by the word of God.

Arkansas is seeming scarier by the day, how could anyone with openly expressed views like this get elected in a sane society? :(

Translation: he's an angry black man, scaring the womenfolk.

I hope he sings a few more bars of Al Green at the next debate. That'll scare the womenfolk!!!

Have you uploaded any pictures before? If not, your Image Library will be empty and no window will open. If you click the Upload Image button, that will enable you to choose a pic from your computer to upload. If no window opens when you click the Upload Image button, then it may be some sort of browser incompatibility. What OS and browser are you using?

Yes, I've uploaded pics before. I have a macbook and downloaded the lastest wildcat whatever it was.

re: #79 Obdicut

It was really strange to sit and listen to Scott Brown continually call Elizabeth Warren "Professor" in their first debate as though it were some sort of insult. He denied that, of course, but you knew he was sending a message to a bunch of his supporters.

re: #79 Obdicut

We still hearken back to a golden age at the turn of the XXth century when we had inventors, entrepreneurs and small companies finding practical applications for scientific principles that had already been discovered.

But modern research is about developing entirely new scientific principles and that, is a (dare I use the word?) collective undertaking.

Another pro-slavery letter to the editor by GOP Arkansas state Rep. Loy Mauch, this one from back in 2003 has come to light...

Arkansas is seeming scarier by the day, how could anyone with openly expressed views like this get elected in a sane society? :(

I still wonder how we are going to be able to accomodate the ever-growing number of people like this and still remain a modern (post)industrial society.

Entrepreneurs and businesses KNOW THAT THEMSELVES. That's why they glom onto areas with top flight research institutes (Bay Area: Stanford, UCBerkeley, Boston: MIT, Harvard, etc.) with highly educated work forces.

I see that you're using Chrome on a Mac. I just tested the same browser and the upload button works fine - it pops up the dialog box asking you to choose a file to upload.

What happens when you click "Upload Image?" Just nothing? Do you see the formatting buttons at the upper right of the editing box?

If nothing happens, you may have disabled Javascript in Chrome somehow. Go to Preferences -> Advanced Settings and there's an option to enable/disable Javascript - make sure it's enabled.

It says under Content Settings: Allow Javascript. I didn't change anything.

It also won't allow me to enter tags --hasn't for some time.

If you're calling a never-hunted-in-her-life half-term governor of Alaska a strong woman, that's something you'll have to deal with on your own. The Romney/Ryan voucher system would consider that a pre-existing condition.

Women in Swing States Have Gender-Specific Priorities
Female voters name abortion as top issue for women, men prioritize jobs
by Andrew Dugan
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Women in the 12 key swing states have starkly different responses from men when asked in an open-ended format to name the most important issues for their gender in the 2012 election. A plurality of female registered voters offered abortion (39%) as the most important issue for women, followed by jobs, healthcare, the economy, and equal rights. In contrast, men see jobs (38%) and the economy (37%) as the two most important issues facing men.

Guy on Twitter trying to argue with me that getting rid of federal student loans and Pell Grants is a great idea.....

Making education in this country even worse, at a time when we're falling behind the rest of the world.

it's part of mitt's hidden agenda to bring manufacturing back to the united states by fostering the growth of an impovershed and desperate underclas that will accept drastically lowered wages

The Milins enlisted former congressmen J.C. Watts (R-Okla.) and J.D. Hayworth (R-Ariz.) to hawk NGC's products. Hayworth's 2007 appearance in an NGC infomercial helped sink his 2010 Senate bid against Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). A McCain spokesman ripped Hayworth for participating in "an obvious rip-off scam," and McCain gave away to charity the more than $9,000 in donations he'd received from the Milins.

Ugh. Hayworth.

Weird. One other Page did that to me today. This one.

I've experienced the same thing with several pages today, both from within the Spy and from the Pages sidebar on the main articles page. For example this page in the sidebar has the correct URL in the code, yet it redirects to the home page. This link, which is right under the previous one, works fine.

I strongly suspect some sort of Apache redirect that's using a regex that isn't working exactly as expected. Regex is voodoo. *grimace*

124 bubba zanetti  Wed, Oct 17, 2012 5:42:10pm

re: #123 CuriousLurker

I think that page is actually missing.

If you play around with page urls, they're being matched, so:

/page/287375_What_Billy_Koehlers_Death_Reve

works as does:

/page/287375_What_Billy_Koehlers

down to:

/page/287375

But if you give it something that doesn't match:

/page/287375666

It will redirect to the home page instead of returning a 404.

My guess is the page didn't save during the DB crash, but there's some other table that has a reference to the page, like with a foreign key to the user and the page.
