Nate Silver on the Massive ‘Gender Gap’

Women can tell who’s really on their side
Politics • Views: 25,349

Nobody is as wonkish about polls as Nate Silver, and today he has an interesting look at what’s turning out be an historic ‘Gender Gap’.

If only women voted, President Obama would be on track for a landslide re-election, equaling or exceeding his margin of victory over John McCain in 2008. Mr. Obama would be an overwhelming favorite in Ohio, Florida, Virginia and most every other place that is conventionally considered a swing state. The only question would be whether he could forge ahead into traditionally red states, like Georgia, Montana and Arizona.

If only men voted, Mr. Obama would be biding his time until a crushing defeat at the hands of Mitt Romney, who might win by a similar margin to the one Ronald Reagan realized over Jimmy Carter in 1980. Only California, Illinois, Hawaii and a few states in the Northeast could be considered safely Democratic. Every other state would lean red, or would at least be a toss-up.

Although polls disagree on the exact magnitude of the gender gap (and a couple of recent ones seemed to show Mitt Romney eliminating the president’s advantage with women voters), the consensus of surveys points to a large one this year — rivaling the biggest from past elections.

But after the Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, reproductive rights became a greater focus in presidential elections — particularly under Ronald Reagan in 1980, who was more willing to campaign on the issue of abortion than most of his predecessors. The gender gap jumped to 17 points that year, with men much more likely to vote for Mr. Reagan.

Thanks again for everything, you fucking asshole.

I have such a hard time believing that women are turning to Romney. I cannot fathom that.

I read that seniors are going to Romney, too. Talk about slitting ones own throat.

What is the saddest is that if all their lying works, that's it for all future elections. No one will ever tell the truth. No one holds them accountable. The media is not just silent but complicit.

So the polls show a major narrowing of the gap, but Nate Silver pronounces it 'historic'. One might say the fix is in and the meme set.

If there is a fix in anywhere it is anti-voting laws, voter caging, voter registration illegalities and electronic voting machine companies owned in part by Romney's son - all by the GOP. The PA GOP has stated that the fix is in. "Voter ID. Done."

So the fact that one of mitt's sons is part owner of a company that makes electronic voting machines is evidence of a conspiracy to steal the election?

No. A few outlier polls show the gap narrowing. The majority of polls do NOT show this.

....
The biggest gender gap to date in the exit polls came in 2000, when Al Gore won by 11 points among women, but George W. Bush won by 9 points among men — a 20-point difference. The numbers this year look very close to that.

So basically, the gender gap may not help Obama.

The boilerplate couter-argument from the Romney camp is "What women really care about are jobs"

Which is true to a great extent. But they have this tendency to care for jobs that pay equally for equal work and jobs that offer basic benefits, like health care, including contraception.

Mitt Romney’s Three Big Second Term Promises

Mitt Romney hasn’t shied away from making big promises about his potential presidency. On issues like employment, the budget, and energy, Romney’s appealed to voters by vowing major improvement.

But many of these promises come with an asterisk.

Specifically, he and his campaign concede they will take two full terms to accomplish, which leaves him off the hook if he makes little progress in his first four years.

Exactly. I remember the days of back-alley abortions and coat hangers. Of women dying so that they wouldn't have to carry a pregnancy they did not want.

Now, the GOP wants limited birth control and no abortion. WTF do they think is going to happen?

Goddamned right I care about our rights. Even though I am not of child-bearing age any longer, no woman should EVER have to die because they are considered a whore for having sex, which is the entire GOP's premise on the contraception issue.

Fix? There's no fix, only a couple polls, outliers, show any narrowing, the rest show it to be historically high. You're cherry picking to present the idea of fraud and should be ashamed of yourself.

Women dislike Romney for incredibly valid reasons, he opposes their established current reproductive freedoms and lies to them transparently about it. He lied blatantly about his support of the Blunt-Rubio Amendment. When asked about pay equality he refused to answer the question and presented women as fundamentally more unreliable and undependable in the workplace than men, requiring more flexible schedules so they can take care of the kids and fix dinner.

The question isn't why women tend to dislike Romney, but why men aren't right there with them.

Thing is, I'm not so sure of that. My inner contrarian is getting convinced that anything less than a clear victory, PV and EV, for Obama is gonna raise the question of whether it's a nod for a second chance or simple indecision on the part of the voters. 'Religious Freedom' Rallies Barely Conceal Anti-Obama Activism

Opponents of contraception access this weekend held “religious freedom” demonstrations across the country to protest the Obama administration’s new rules ensuring contraception coverage in health insurance plans. In one of the rallies last month in Washington D.C. in front of the White House, speakers including Frank Pavone of Priests for Life, Patrick Mahoney of the Christian Defense Coalition and Lila Rose of Live Action denounced the Obama administration for their purportedly “tyrannical” insurance mandate.

The keynote speakers at the White House rally was none other than Father Marcel Guarnizo, whose claim to fame is denying a lesbian parishioner communion at her mother’s funeral and refused to attend the burial ceremony. Fr. Guarnizo said that pro-choice and pro-gay equality politicians are “unfit to rule” and are “not worthy of a democratic vote.” He went on to maintain that American democracy is on the brink of collapse and told attendees to “vote this man out of office in November.”

Don't think there's any option that makes many of them feel better. Most of them hate Romney as much as they hate Obama. But that's because they're not focused on the guy in the White House so much as Congress, where they view the "will of the people" being done. Romney's in the White House as a rubber stamp, not a real leader.

"We support your existence so you can be destroyed according to our whacked out prophecy."

Funny how it wasn't so long ago that conservative evangelicals wouldn't even think of voting for a Jew for office because "Jew don't accept the lord Jesus Christ as are savior." It was a lot worse than not voting for a Jew. The voting part I learned from watching the Lee Atwater documentary and covered in part here.

But of all the things of which he has been accused, he says, the one that makes him the maddest concerns the charge of anti-Semitism in the 1978 Congressional victory by the current Governor of South Carolina, Carroll A. Campbell Jr., over Max Heller, the former Mayor of Greenville and a Jewish refugee from Austria who had fled the Nazis.

Atwater's accusers claim that as an informal adviser to Campbell, he passed secret polling information to Don Sprouse, a third-party candidate, who then used the information to undermine Heller's campaign. Political analyst Alan Baron has revealed that Campbell's pollster in 1978, Arthur J. Finkelstein, of Irvington, N.Y., told him that his data showed South Carolina voters would reject ''a foreign-born Jew who did not believe in Jesus Christ as the savior.'' Marvin Chernoff, a Democratic consultant in Columbia, claims that Atwater specifically told him of passing Finkelstein's secret poll to Sprouse.

Atwater denies all of it. Finkelstein and all of the Campbell campaign staffers contacted also deny the accusations. But Campbell's campaign manager has since admitted to a late-night meeting with Sprouse representatives in a Greenville parking lot before the election, and the Finkelstein poll released by Campbell did ask voters to compare how they would feel about a race between a ''Jewish immigrant'' and a ''native South Carolinian.''

When i was moved from one foster home to another, My case worker and I took a train from Central Valley to Richmond, Ca. then a Bus up to Napa Valley. On the train I saw my first Black man. I screamed and hid on the train till they finally found me.. Terrified and shaking under a seat. I still feel bad for that man. It turns out my mother went to high school with a very famous NFL player and he would come by and play basketball with the awkward white kid. He inspired me and supported my dreams. He lifted me up when I didn't make the Temple BB team. I was crushed. But he and my folks supported my dreams..

Why Teddy Roosevelt was fucking awesome:

Roosevelt generally judged men and women by their character, or on more than one occasion by their politics, but not on their race or religion. As police commissioner, he opened the department to Jews. One Jewish officer, Otto Raphael, said the traditional prayer for the dead over Roosevelt's body the night before he was buried.

One of the favorite stories of TR and Jews comes from his time as a Police Commisioner of New York City. A German anti-semitic preacher planned to give speeches in New York "denouncing" Jews. The preacher expected protection from the police department and that is where Roosevelt came in.

Many Jews were alarmed and/or outraged and asked Roosevelt to prevent the speeches. "Of course I told them I could not - that the right of free speech must be maintained unless he incited them to riot." But, "On thinking it over, however it occurred to me that there was one way in which I could undo most of the mischief he was trying to do."

Cleverly, TR put a Jewish Police Sergeant in charge of the preachers protection, along with forty Jewish Policemen and the fanatical preacher looked absolutely ridiculous.

Hi guys, I just wanted to take some time off studying and shamelessly plug a short essay I wrote about the relationship between the Taliban, AQ and the TTP.

If you know your history, it's probably familiar stuff, for a few others, I hope you learn something.

It's available as a pdf here, on the IMED website.

Simon Franzen examines the complex, often misunderstood, relationship between al-Qaeda, the Taliban and the various militant groups found in FATA (the Federally Administered Tribal Areas) in Pakistan, including the TTP (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan).

Much of what is commonly assumed about the Taliban, the TTP and al-Qaeda is based on misinformation, misunderstanding or a misrepresentation of historical events. The Taliban and al-Qaeda can in many ways be seen as sharing common values, although their ultimate goals remain very different. The Taliban were not part of the mujahedeen fighting against the Soviets in Afghanistan, and emerged only in 1994. Al-Qaeda, for all the conspiracy, did not receive money from the CIA during the 1980s, and was only officially formed as an organisation in 1988. The creation of the TTP in 2007 is another matter, and was created as an umbrella organisation for various Pakistani militant groups, and maintains close ties with al-Qaeda. However, the Pakistani Taliban is not the same Taliban as the one formed in 1994, and although it swears its loyalty to Mullah Omar, its goals differ from that of the Afghani Taliban.

I will miss the debate tonight, I need to get up early tomorrow and read more during the day.
Hope you all have a good evening and don't do too many shots watching the debate.
Later!

Every single woman should read this.

A far more ominous tale in the Romney canon also took place that summer, one that has been largely swept under the rug as the former governor of Massachusetts challenges incumbent Barack Obama for the presidency.

It was in August of that year, shortly after the Romney family returned from their vacation to Lake Huron, that a pregnant woman in her late 30s—Carrel Hilton Sheldon—was informed by her doctor that she had a life-threatening blood clot lodged in her pelvic region.

Sheldon's doctor advised her that the overdose of Heparin might have also harmed her 8-week-old fetus and, given the possible fatal repercussions to her, he recommended that she abort her pregnancy.

"Of course, you should have the abortion," she recalled [her Mormon "stake president] saying.

According to an account later written anonymously by Sheldon for the LDS women's journal, Exponent II, it was after receiving this counsel from her Williams supporting the potentially life-saving procedure that she experienced an uninvited visit in her hospital from her Mormon bishop at the time, 36-year-old Mitt Romney, who adamantly opposed the abortion.

"He regaled me with stories of his sister and her retarded child and what a blessing the child had been to the family," Sheldon wrote of the incident. "He told me that 'as your bishop, my concern is with the child.'"

There was no empathy forthcoming from Romney, according to Sheldon, no warmth or sympathy. Moreover, Sheldon contends, Romney cast doubt on her story about the stake president's approval. He simply didn't believe her. He threatened to call him and track him down. He didn't seem to care a lick about her personal well-being.

"At a time when I would have appreciated nurturing and support from spiritual leaders and friends," Sheldon wrote, "I got judgment, criticism, prejudicial advice, and rejection."

According to R.B. Scott, author of the insightful Mitt Romney: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics, Romney's only concern was for the unborn fetus. Last year, Scott, who is also a Mormon, interviewed Sheldon's 90-year-old father, Phil Hilton, who remembered the incident quite vividly.

"I have never been so upset about anything in my life," he told Scott. "[Romney] is an authoritative type fellow who thinks he is in charge of the world."

Hilton was so offended by Romney's single-mindedness and absolute lack of sensitivity to his daughter's health that he ordered the young bishop out of his home. Hilton told Scott that he was fully prepared to "throw [Romney] off the porch if he paused for even a second." Romney kept moving.

Read the whole thing.

re: #140 AK-47%

I believe there's a particular agenda behind this: as much as a lot of the right wing embraces motherhood, they have problems with breastfeeding, especially in public.

Because real American mothers put their kids on the bottle. Breast-feeding is a slippery slope, and this is what it could lead to...

Mind meet gutter. . .slippery slope made me think bad thoughts. . . .:)

‘F*ck you, Ohio,’ for hogging presidential race

“Many things divide Americans, but we can unite behind a common enemy — a force making us irrational, weak and stupid,” Cobb says in a satirical Second City Network video published on Monday. “We must come together to destroy it before it destroys us. Fuck you, Ohio.”

“I lived in Ohio for years,” he explains. “It’s not all monsters, but mostly. And now they rule us all. Candidates have to win Ohio to be president so they are the only people who matter, as opposed to, say, you. And many of them, clearly, are fucking idiots.”

For example, Cobb notes that vying for Ohio means that candidates feel the need to promote “clean coal” technologies, “something the rest of the country knows is bullshit.”

“Ohio made them do that,” he observes. “Clean coal doesn’t exist. Coal is dirt. So, clean coal is like clean dog shit.”

“Democracy is over and they won,” Cobb adds. “I’m not saying we should build a wall around Ohio and burn the whole thing to the ground with everyone in it. We have to let the Ohioans out first so they can help rebuild what’s left of civilization after Ohio is done with it.”

“The rest of us are taking it right in the buckeye.”

State Bar files ethics suit against Morton prosecutor

A State Bar of Texas disciplinary commission has filed a lawsuit accusing former Williamson County District Attorney Ken Anderson of violating his duty as a lawyer by intentionally withholding favorable evidence from Michael Morton, who served almost 25 years in prison for a murder he did not commit.

If the allegations are found to be true after an as-yet unscheduled civil trial, Anderson — now a state district judge in Georgetown — faces punishments that could include a public reprimand, disbarment or the loss of his law license for a set amount of time. Anderson has denied any wrongdoing.

The four-page “disciplinary petition” lists five pieces of information that it says Anderson hid from Morton and his lawyers “before, during and after” Morton’s 1987 trial, when he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his wife, Christine, in the bed of their Williamson County home.

The petition also said Anderson did not reply truthfully when District Judge William Lott, who oversaw Morton’s trial and is now deceased, asked if all favorable evidence had been turned over to defense lawyers as required by law.

“During a pretrial hearing, (Anderson) affirmatively told the trial court that he had no evidence favorable to the accused. That statement was false,” the petition said.

No punishment I can think of would be enough to hit this bastard with.

There are really that many of my fellow males that feel that a return to Reagan-style economics and Bush-style foreign policy would actually be good for our country?

Gold Star Mother: Romney Skipped Funeral, Left "Bullying" Messages

Appearing on ABC’s The View this past Thursday, Ann Romney claimed that her husband, as governor of Massachusetts, “went to every funeral” of fallen soldiers from the Commonwealth. She spoke of the difficult role he had “to comfort those that have lost a loved one and have gone in harm’s way.”

But Mitt Romney did not attend every soldier’s funeral; there were at least two cases where he did not.

And in one of those cases, a Gold Star mother claims that, far from comforting, Romney left insensitive phone messages – messages that she calls “bullying” and her husband describes as “abusive.”

“I can’t believe you haven’t returned my call,” Romney said on one of the voice mail messages, according to Stephany Kern, speaking at her Westerly, Rhode Island home this past Saturday. “Here I am making a second call; I haven’t heard from you.”

Kern did not save the messages. This is the first time she has spoken publicly about them...

Ok, I heard on the news that Trump was going to release something that will destroy Obama's political career. But I assume that will also be wingnut garbage.

You'll have to wait till Wednesday for that to be revealed apparently...

Trump’s surprise started last week, with a cliffhanger of a tweet Friday afternoon: Donald J. Trump ‏wrote, ”I’ll be making a major announcement on President Obama next week — stay tuned!”

Then, after a weekend of silence on the subject, Trump offered a few more details about this ‘major announcement’ during his weekly phone interview with Fox & Friends. ”It’s going to be announced probably on Wednesday. But I have something very, very big concerning the President of the United States,” Trump said Monday morning on the show.

When the Fox & Friends hosts inquired whether the announcement was of a personal or professional nature, the business mogul said it was both, adding, “It’s all in one, everything. It’s very big. Bigger than anybody would know.”

Sure, I'll bet...

Bryan Fischer finds a gay he can like

Bryan Fischer is out for vindication. He was dismissed from a CNN broadcast by Carol Costello after ranting away at gays and failing to discuss the SPLC Mix It Up Day honestly. Now he has found himself a gay person who Fischer believes speaks the truth and thinks like he thinks. And as if to shout, “I told you so!” he presents this gay man as an authority in his most recent column. Fischer cites Johann Hari who penned what Hari portrays as an expose of sorts for Huffington Post on the subject of gay fascists. No matter that most gays aren’t fascists, or that most neo-Nazis, especially in the U.S., hate gays or that Johann Hari is just one gay person. Hari says some things Fischer can agree with, so Hari is an authority.

The problem for Fischer is that the consensus among historians is that the idea that gays are always at the center of fascism is inaccurate. In Fischer’s world, the majority has been co-opted by the gays whereas the few people who see a vital link between homosexuality and fascism are seeing the gospel truth. All it takes is one person, expert or not, saying what Fischer says and voilà, the man is a genius.

Agree. The likely voter screens represent a major adjustment to the numbers for most polling firms, and are definitely a source of variability. Nate Silver's model intrinsically accounts for this by looking at how a poll is moving relative to its last iteration, rather than just the top-line numbers...it's a useful way of looking at it and helps to sort out what to make of Gallup showing Romney up 6 while IDB/TIPP shows Obama up 4.

Tech note on the optimizations I've been doing:

With small data sets, SELECT DISTINCT works very fast. But with larger data sets, SELECT DISTINCT is evil and very, very slow.

I refactored the query that gets your complete list of tags for LGF Pages (in order to make suggestions) so that it returns the full list including duplicates, then uses PHP's array_unique to remove the duplicates instead of SELECT DISTINCT. Much, much quicker for large data sets, and slightly slower for small ones.

I noticed this was a problem from watching the MySQL queries with mytop, and seeing that every time researchok opened the LGF Pages posting window, it was taking 20 seconds or more to pull out all his tags from the DB -- he currently has more than 50,000 distinct tags. The new method eliminates this bottleneck.

I think there's a huge generational component to this. re: #285 Mostly sane, most of the time.

There is, but it's still excusing people in the past a little too much when they're actually as racist as Roosevelt was. There have been people since time immemorial who've risen above racism-- hell, the Romans weren't really racist at all, though they were massively culturalist. Roosevelt was a bit of a dilettante scientist, and unfortunately the pop science of the day supported the idea that the other races were 'less developed', using very ad hoc reasoning. There were many scientists and just smart people who saw through it and understood that the races were equal. They were few, and exception, but Teddy Roosevelt was a brilliant and inspired man-- it's a flaw in his character that that brilliance didn't extend where some of the other luminaries of his time did.

Louisiana woman set on fire, ‘KKK’ painted on her car

Police in Winnsboro, Louisiana confirmed on Monday that a woman had been set on fire over the weekend and racial slurs were found scrawled on her car.

Sharmeka Moffitt told police that she was attacked and burned by three men wearing white hoodies at a park in Franklin Parish on Sunday, according to KNOE.

At a press conference on Monday, police said that the letters “KKK” were spray-painted on the hood of her car.

Winnsboro Police Chief Kevin Cobb said that the FBI was investigating whether the incident was a hate crime, but authorities declined to classify the attack as racially motivated on Monday.

Cokie Roberts said a dumb thing on NPR this morning. She said "abortion is a settled issue." And now I see she said this about the Democratic convention:

“I think this Democratic convention was really over the top in terms of abortion,” Roberts added. “Every single speaker talked about abortion — and, you know, at some point, you start to alienate people. Thirty percent of Democrats are pro-life.”

Sounds like she has an agenda.

I have a theory that she hates women. She was so rude to Renee Montagne about a year ago, that she was pulled from the air for a few weeks, and when they let her back on, it was months before they put her back on with Renee, and they still don't let her say goodbye at the end of her segment. The incident with Renee was something like this:

Renee: "Thank you Cokie, always good to have you on."

Cokie: "Mmm hmmm."

Apparently that was the last straw after being more subtle about it for a long time.

The whole thing is moronic. If you actually had something and actually wanted it to hurt the President, you wouldn't announce when you're going to drop it and make a spectacle of it. You quietly leak it to a few media outlets and just watch it explode. You don't give the other side time to prepare and you don't give advance notice. In fact, Teddy Roosevelt shows us why these fights over points of view are so goddamn vital. It is absolutely poisonous for the GOP to be tolerating racism in the way that they do, because being brilliant and inspired and a good person is not an antidote to racism, if you're brought up in it. Teddy Roosevelt was an amazing man, but thanks to being taught that racism had scientific basis, being told that blacks were inferior and would always need to depend on the white races, he believed in it. If Teddy Roosevelt can be fooled, then anyone can. It is really, really important that we maintain scientific standards in our schools, and not let religion and "American exceptionalism" that whitewashes slavery and the persecution of Native Americans take over.

George McGovern, a pacifist who wanted to bomb Auschwitz

George McGovern is widely remembered for advocating immediate American withdrawal from Vietnam and sharp reductions in defense spending. Yet despite his reputation as a pacifist, the former U.S. senator and 1972 presidential candidate, who died Sunday at 90, did believe there were times when America should use military force abroad.

Case in point: the Allies' failure to bomb Auschwitz, an episode with which McGovern had a little-known personal connection.

In June 1944, the Roosevelt administration received a detailed report about Auschwitz from two escapees who described the mass-murder process and drew diagrams pinpointing the gas chambers and crematoria. Jewish organizations repeatedly asked U.S. officials to order the bombing of Auschwitz and the railroad lines leading to the camp. The proposal was rejected on the grounds that it would require “considerable diversion” of planes that were needed elsewhere for the war effort. One U.S. official claimed that bombing Auschwitz "might provoke even more vindictive action by the Germans."

Enter McGovern. In World War II, the 22-year-old son of a South Dakota pastor piloted a B-24 "Liberator" bomber. Among his targets: German synthetic oil factories in occupied Poland -- some of them less than five miles from the Auschwitz gas chambers

More.

As a side note on Trump, a friend of mine went to one of DT's real estate seminars and was interviewed by a local paper. He said he wasn't a big Donald fan (nothing at all about what an asshole DT is, just some nothing comment), but since my friend's name was shown in the article, he started getting hate mail.

If I hadn't been to North Carolina a few years ago, and therefore found out what a Harris Teeter is, I wouldn't even know what that comment meant.

Did you know the chickens you buy to eat are usually less than two months old when they're butchered? Maybe the younger they are, the cheaper and better tasting.

Cokie Roberts said a dumb thing on NPR this morning. She said "abortion is a settled issue." And now I see she said this about the Democratic convention:

Sounds like she has an agenda.

I have a theory that she hates women. She was so rude to Renee Montagne about a year ago, that she was pulled from the air for a few weeks, and when they let her back on, it was months before they put her back on with Renee, and they still don't let her say goodbye at the end of her segment. The incident with Renee was something like this:

Renee: "Thank you Cokie, always good to have you on."

Cokie: "Mmm hmmm."

Apparently that was the last straw after being more subtle about it for a long time.

E gad. One of my sisters had four boys. That totally looks like something they would've tried.

Like the "bombs" they were dropping on each other out of the two-story wooden fort my dad built them. Kid comes in head gushing blood; sister applies pressure to stop bleeding and asks what they were using for bombs; kid responds, "Bricks". *sister disappears in a cloud of dust, just like in the cartoons*

Or playing good guy/bad guy cowboys. Kid comes in saying brother can't breathe; sister is immediately on her feet screaming, "Where is he??" Kid responds, "Hanging from the tree in the backyard." Yes, literally hanging—by the neck, from a real rope. Explanation? "Well, he was the bad guy!"

God bless her, I don't know how she survived raising those boys without developing PTSD. It's a miracle all of them made it to adulthood.
