Romney came of praising Obama on a bunch of things, mostly got his ass kicked on foreign policy issues, and talked too much about domestic/economy stuff during a foreign policy debate.
Obama had some good zingers though.

It was a beautiful way of saying 2 things. 1, PBO was saying, hey, I'm the Commander-in-Chief, I've been running this thing for 4 years, and you don't know shit, and 2, having fewer vessels doesn't mean shit Rmoney because one of today's vessels can do the job of 10 or more of the vessels way back when.

I know I post this quote more often than I should be allowed to get away with, but I can't help it.:
I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?
To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”
To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

You know, I have a hard time getting too worked up about it at this point. I know who I'll vote for and will do so, early, on Friday.
As for the rest of the near term, I have my hunting licenses, I've zeroed my Winchester 94 & picked up a S&W revolver in .45 colt. I just would like to live my life by the the moon, the sun & the seasons, filling the larder as I can with game, berries & grains. Even as those seasons turn and the years go by there are some idiots who want to force it to become more than that.
Well, I'll pray not but as the saying goes, "Qui desiderat pacem, bellum praeparat; nemo provocare ne offendere audet quem intelliget superiorem esse pugnaturem"
115 | dragonath Mon, Oct 22, 2012 9:00:40pm |
Well.
I did a double take when Romney started to say something along the lines of "Iran looks at our deficits and says we're weak, etc."
Since when do we take advice from Iran? Romney looked weak and defeatist.
Also, I think Bob Schieffer was trying to hold back laughter after the "horses and bayonets" bit.

They're trying so hard to polish this turd. I notice they seem to be focusing almost entirely on the short stints of the debate when Schieffer allowed Willard to pivot the debate to domestic issues, while either refusing to acknowledge how he couldn't differentiate himself from Obama on foreign policy or grudgingly saying that he sounded out of his depth.

Didn't Romney brag about getting every last cent from the Feds too? Yeah Mitt big government is so bad except when it's helping you with your projects. No disrespect intended to the 2002 Olympians but if the federal government can help fund the Olympics then it can certainly help make health insurance, education, etc more affordable for more Americans. Too bad Mitt won't acknowledge that.

And the post-debate spin begins:
Problem Solved: Romney Aide Says World Court Would Arrest Ahmadinejad
For a candidate who frequently accuses President Obama of kowtowing to the international community, Mitt Romney’s aides sure have an optimistic view of the global justice system. A top Romney adviser suggested that the International Criminal Court could arrest Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, cutting off the regime’s leadership in one fell swoop.
During Monday’s presidential debate in Boca Raton, Fla., Romney brought up the notion of indicting Ahmadinejad for his inflammatory statements against Israel. The Iranian dictator famously was quoted in a speech saying that Israel “must be wiped off the map,” though the translation was later revealed to be somewhat inaccurate.
“I’d make sure that Ahmadinejad is indicted under the Genocide Convention. His words amount to genocide incitation,” Romney said.
According to Romney senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom, successfully indicting Ahmadinejad would be more than just a symbolic victory.
“I think it would remove probably one of the most anti-Jewish, anti-Israel, pro-genocide members of that regime in Tehran,” he told TPM after the debate. As to whether he would actually be arrested: “I’m hoping that he would be indicted and that action would unfold following that indictment. Absolutely.”

A majority, 59%, of those who watched the Boca Raton, Florida, debate thought Obama performed stronger than expected, while 15% thought he was weaker than expected and 23% thought he performed on par with their expectations.
Romney outperformed the expectations of 44% of debate watchers, while 26% thought he performed weaker than expected and 26% said he performed on par with expectations.

Did he say it was landlocked, or did he say Syria was their path to the sea? It makes a difference. The first is bizarre. The second makes slightly more sense, although I think it's irrelevant. The sea, I mean. Back in February, when Iran wanted to put a couple of warships in the Med, they went through the Suez Canal.

Does CNN/ORC ever publish cross tabs on these debate polls? This latest batch doesn't even have a sample size or anything. No age, race, gender, political affiliation or religious breakdown. Do they keep the population size low for a better margin of error by only estimating CNN viewers? It can't be based on total debate viewers because I'm pretty sure that data doesn't come out until after they publish.
I'm just wondering why the hell they post them since all it accomplishes is to diminish their reputation and show contempt for their viewers.

Okay so to go a little OT but my current reading is James Chace's 1912. Not a great book but pretty interesting one about the 1912 election between Teddy Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, and Eugene Debs. Taft would be interesting these days. A conservative no doubt but a very non-religious man, he doubted the divinity of Christ.

re: #301 Varek Raith
“Our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917,” said Romney. “The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We’re now at 285.”
“I think Gov. Romney maybe has not spent enough time looking at how our military works,” Obama shot back. “We also have fewer horses and bayonets because nature of our military has changed. “There are these things called aircraft carriers where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.”
“The question is not a game of Battleship, where we’re counting ships, it’s what are our capabilities,” Obama concluded.
BAM!
Please tell me he has at least heard of the USS Comfort and the USS Mercy.
Modern Marvels! A total source of national pride for me. The description of those ships on Wiki leaves me in awe.

re: #304 Targetpractice
I hear the wingnuts telling me how "presidential" Romney looked, trying to declare that Obama looked "pinched" and "angry."
Take a look at this pic and tell me who looks like he really doesn't want to be on that stage:
Man, Obama's pissed. //

Do they have ERs? I may need treatment someday.

In the all important zinger metric I score this debate in President Obama's favor.
Doesn't help that Romney seems programmed to walk right into them.

I don't think this ship was sailing back when the Navy needed 313 ships.

CNNs real time poll, lowest point in the debate was when Romney said he'd repeal Obamacare and cut programs. Totally tanked with the audience.

de Tocqueville also wrote on the French Revolution --alas, but not available on audio.

why doesn't romney pony up and donate one of his yachts as a battleship to the navy? they probably displace roughly the same amount of water.

I had an old boss, who was a great boss, but really a nerd. He used to call his teenage son "dude" when they talked on the phone.
I used to think it was kinda cute that he tried to relate to his kid.
I don't think Mitt is cute. He lame-ass and just comes off looking nerdier when he tries to be cool.

Ya know, all these people who aren't going to get the "entitlements they didn't earn" HAVE THE RIGHT TO OWN A GUN.
If they are hungry, or their kid is sick . . . .
The vast majority of people are not lazy, trying to get something for nothing. I refuse to believe that --I've nothing but anecdotal evidence.
