More douchebaggery from Wisconsin:
Volunteer for Chad Lee recants story of attack for being gay Republican
A volunteer for Chad Lee's congressional campaign has recanted allegations that he was attacked at his home last week for being a gay Republican.
The volunteer, Kyle Wood, could now face criminal charges that include obstructing police or filing a false police report, Madison Police Capt. Joe Balles said Monday.
"We don't ever want to be in the business of discouraging crime victims to come forward," Balles said. "At the same time, when something like this happens, this is on the extremes."
Balles said the case would be cleared as "unfounded" and sent to the Dane County District Attorney's Office after the follow-up investigation is completed.
Police did not name the man in an updated incident report posted on its website Monday or in the original report posted Wednesday. And Balles didn't identify him in an interview Monday.
But in a statement Thursday, Lee's campaign decried the alleged attack and identified the volunteer as Kyle Wood.
Over the past several days, Wood has given interviews to numerous national and local conservative media outlets, including The Daily Caller, Wisconsin Reporter, Media Trackers, talk show host Vicki McKenna, and columnist Christian Schneider writing in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Wood said in the interviews he was attacked for being a gay man who did not support Lee's opponent, Democratic congressional candidate and state Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Madison, who is also gay.
Wood supplied The Daily Caller with photographs of him after the alleged attack, purportedly showing injuries to his neck, head and face.
On Monday, Media Trackers published on its website threatening text messages allegedly sent by Philip Frank, Pocan's husband, to Wood. Balles said there is "no validity" to the messages, and Media Trackers removed the story from its website.

Typical RaptureReady douchebags...
out of the box:
If Cleveland gets hit real bad and people are without power, traffic lights out, public transit problems, Romney could take Ohio!!!Obama's huge margin of victory in Cuyahoga County in 2008 was greater than the margin he won the state by! Cleveland can change the entire outcome of the state!!!
Time4me2fly:
These states are all heavily democratic, so even a low turnout will still give these states to obama. Ohio, which is the most important swing state, should not be affected. Pennsylvania , a swing state could be affected though. My personal opinion, is that the republicans will go to the polls if they have to swim, so I see any hardship in voting benefiting republicans. If the dems feel this hurts them, then it wouldn't surprise me to see obama try to delay the election. Also, the disruption could open up the prospect of wide spread fraud as well. I think this is the most divisive election in our history and I look for problems afterwards. My advice, hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
out of the box:
Not necessarily!Praying to God that major infrastructure in Cleveland is damaged or destroyed by Sandy, but that lives are spared.
Yeah because your side winning an election is obviously more important than the destruction of a city. No ethical problem with praying for that destruction. Nope, none at all.

Last night I posted a section of Gorecki's Symphony № 3 (`Symphony of Sorrowful Songs`), for soprano and orchestra.
From the Wikipedia article:
His name remained larged unknown outside Poland until the mid-to late 1980s, and his fame arrived in the 1990s.[11] Especially in 1992, 15 years after it was composed, a recording of his Third Symphony, Symphony of Sorrowful Songs—recorded with soprano Dawn Upshaw and released to commemorate the memory of those lost during the Holocaust—became a worldwide commercial and critical success, selling more than a million copies and vastly exceeding the typical lifetime sales of a recording of symphonic music by a 20th-century composer. As surprised as anyone at its popularity, Górecki said, "Perhaps people find something they need in this piece of music […] somehow I hit the right note, something they were missing. Something somewhere had been lost to them. I feel that I instinctively knew what they needed."[12] This popular acclaim did not generate wide interest in Górecki's other works,[13] and he pointedly resisted the temptation to repeat earlier success, or compose for commercial reward.
The excerpt I posted last night was not from the hit release, but I liked it so much I dug up the hit version, and here it is:
The recording is at a low volume, so you might need to turn it up.

Boy, 12, on trial for murdering neo-Nazi father
A US boy, who was 10 when he shot his neo-Nazi father dead, could become the youngest person ever jailed in California if he's held responsible.
Now 12, the boy is on trial for murdering 32-year-old Jeff Hall, a regional leader of the National Socialist Movement.
Prosecutors want the boy kept locked up for as long as possible, citing a history of violent behaviour including choking a teacher with a telephone cord."In reality, sometimes kids - just like all of us - do things because they want to, and he decided, as he put it, it was time to end the father-son thing," said Michael Soccio, chief deputy district attorney.

The last I heard from my parents in Connecticut, they'd lost power but whatever colonist built that house there back in the 1700s (we don't know exactly when the house dates from) situated it very well. It's tucked into a little space on the hill that doesn't really get big wind. Greets and saluts from the battered but not beaten NYC metro area. Daylight is revealing quite the scene of devastation across the NYC metro area. Millions are without power (we thankfully avoided losing power by inches - a power line on the block arced a few times but never gave out) and it may be a week or more before power is restored.
Flooding has displaced hundreds of thousands from New Jersey through Long Island and Connecticut and it will be some time before we get a read on just the extent of the damage.
On the transit front - the MTA is shutdown along with PATH, NJ Transit, Amtrak, airports (10,000 flights canceled nationwide), and it may be several days before we get some limited transit restored.
Oh, and there are now reports of a levee failure on the Hackensack River from Hackensack to Carlstadt with water evacuations underway.

The weirdest part about it is the basement. It's an 'open-stone' earth basement, which basically means it doesn't flood because the water just flows out of it. It's built on an angle to help that. It makes for a very musty and dank basement, but it never floods.
The house itself got covered in aluminum siding a long time ago, so it's really not that much to look at, but inside the living room has a great floor, just big planks of local wood close-fitted. And a nice colonial-era fireplace. And the view from my dad's study is gorgeous. It really was built in a very nice location.

At least 10 MTA subway tunnels are flooded out; Brooklyn Battery, Holland, and Queens Midtown Tunnels have flooding. Rail yards are flooded. Bus depots are flooded. Equipment damaged or destroyed.
For the MTA alone, we're probably talking a billion dollars in damage (recall that it cost hundreds of millions to repair/replace Exchange Place to WTC tunnel after it was flooded due to firefighting and water main leaks following 9/11). Multiply that exponentially and you begin to get an idea of the costs and logistics involved.
You have at least a dozen subway lines affected; the MTA moves more than 5 million people daily.
President Obama has declared NY/NJ a major disaster area (freeing up funds/resources for cleanup).

Not sure what they'll try to do. To get the system up and running is top concern; putting in upgrades to prevent future probs is probably down on the list of things to do (and it would take longer to design/implement).
This might be an opportunity to upgrade signal systems, but I'm thinking that they're simply going to replace with like-kind equipment.

Yeah, actually the levee system wouldn't work, given that we're really right on the ocean. Still, this problem is not going to go away, and the 'nice' thing about the magnitude of the disaster is it makes it easier to argue for some serious spending to prevent future problems.

The idea Jeff Master's had been talking about was a system with dikes at Throg's Neck, Verranzo Narrows, and near Perth Amboy.
Which would save the Bronx and parts of the outlying boroughs.

Those systems would protect NY harbor. It wouldn't do anything for people on the South facing sides of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, or the East side of Bronx or north side of Queens. And it does nothing for the rest of Long Island.
It would prevent catastrophic flooding in Manhattan and along the Hudson/East River and into Raritan Bay plus the back bays. That's worth something and worth discussing but it's not a cureall.

This seems like a very interesting piece of contemporary music. I think I'll download it to listen to later when I can give it the attention it deserves. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. More media hype, the RWNJs are already making "fraud" noises too. With the election still a full week away I don't see any reason why it would have to be postponed. The damage simply isn't bad enough to warrant it.

Pretty sure they will have that fixed before election day, although it will cut down on how much early voting is available for sure.
People are sick to death of this campaign, on both sides, they just want it over with. If anyone official is stupid enough to say anything about postponing the election (god forbid) they are going to catch one hell of a tidal wave of negative backlash.
That would also be a way to lose the election...

I think there is a case for establishing an objective standard for postponing an election (that x percent of the the popultion is in a disaster area, for example) but otherwise we gotta go through with this. Even the Civil War did not stop the election in 1864.

Greetings from the Upper West Side. It got crazy windy here, with my building, a six-story, 100 year old masonry building, swaying, but that was it.
I work downtown, and it is unclear to me how long it will take to make downtown usable: with the subway tunnels flooded, mass transit is KO'd for now. I suspect I am not heading down there until next week at best.
We're going to go out for a walk later to see what the West Side Hwy and 79th street boat basin look like, and we'll let you all know what we see.

The local elections here in NYC were postponed due to 9/11. That was supposed to be a local election day. Rudy had graciously offered to stay in office past his term, but Bloomberg told him to shove off.

South Jersey checking in. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, 3 million are without power in the Delaware Valley region. Mass transit is still off-line, but the bridges are open.
It looks like damage at the shore could hit billions of dollars. There's a 80 foot chunk of the Boardwalk at New Hampshire Ave that tore away, and it sounds like most of the barrier islands are inundated.
If there's a plus in all of this, I'm not reading about any loss of life so far, at least around here. Hopefully, that benchmark will maintain.
Personally, we and most friends and family didn't lose power or suffer too much damge. We got really, really lucky.

There won't be. The lesson that the GOP apparatus will take away from all of this is that eight solid years of completely batshit, insanely bigoted rhetoric wasn't enough to defeat their opponent, so next time they need to do it even harder.

Mike Barnacle: Governor, there is no ideology in a storm like this. Tell us about your conversations with the President yesterday.
Gov. Christie: The President's been great, Mike, I have to tell you, and I'm sorry, Joe, I was calling you Mike, it was hard to hear through here. You know, the President's been great. I spoke to him three times yesterday, he called me for the last time at midnight last night asked me what I needed and I said if you could expedite the major disaster exploration without the major FEMA mumbo jumbo. I got a call from FEMA at 2:00 a.m. For me to answer a couple of questions. The President has been all over this and deserves great credit. I've been on the phone with him, like I said personally three times, he gave me his number at the White House, told me to call him if I needed anything and he absolutely means it.
Mike Barnacle: That's great.
Gov. Christie: It's been very good. It's been very good working with the President, and his administration has been coordinating with us great, it's been wonderful.
"FEMA mumbo jumbo", classic Christie. LOL

Christie will pander if necessary. He was asked a year or two ago about the creationism-as-science issue, and basically kicked down the curb to the locals, while insulting the reporter in the process.
Plus, he's been pushing an income tax cut here while being vague on how to pay for it (cough TYPICAL REPUBLICAN BULLSHIT cough).

He's up for reelection next year, so he's not going to go hard after Obama right now. Chris Christie's main focus as governor of New Jersey has been New Jersey, not national politics. He knows that his response to Hurricane Sandy may prove the deciding factor in whether he gets a second term, so he's not going risk things not getting done because of a contrived political spat. Christie's not the kind of asshole who would hurt New Jersey just to DERP at Barack Obama. And honestly, Mitt Romney should be glad Christie isn't that kind, because it would have gone badly for the GOP if Christie had been an asshole.

Mornin' everyone. Hopefully everyone is waking up to relatively minor storm damage on the east coast. Looks like Sandy was every bit as nasty as the bathroom walls at NOAA promised she'd be. On the upside, rebuilding creates jobs and there are people who need work. The other good news is that President Obama will give the states whatever they ask for, while his opponent will be staying out of the way and being 'non-political' by hosting 'storm-relief events' in Ohio, Iowa, and Wisconsin where his poll numbers were hit worst by Sandy's reminder that he wants to gut FEMA.

Watching Christie over the last 24 hours has been like watching Jekyll and Hyde. He was big enough (no fat jokes, please) to praise Obama for the all the help the POTUS is offering, yet took valuable time during a presser to admonish/taunt people who ignored the evac.
Never a dull moment with him, that's for sure.
He went after the mayor of Atlantic City, who IMO deserved the attack. Unlike George W. Bush, Chris Christie knows that when someone is fucking up by the numbers, the top executive needs to point out that said person is fucking up by the numbers.

Gallup has some interesting stats that say early voting may proceed differently than thought. An excerpt:
Romney Leads Among Early Voters, Similar to His Likely Voter Lead
Thus far, early voters do not seem to be swaying the election toward either candidate.
Romney currently leads Obama 52% to 45% among voters who say they have already cast their ballots. However, that is comparable to Romney's 51% to 46% lead among all likely voters in Gallup's Oct. 22-28 tracking polling. At the same time, the race is tied at 49% among those who have not yet voted but still intend to vote early, suggesting these voters could cause the race to tighten. However, Romney leads 51% to 45% among the much larger group of voters who plan to vote on Election Day, Nov. 6.

From the Red Cross FAQ.
I would like to donate clothes, cars or other items to charity. Does the American Red Cross accept donated goods?
Unfortunately, due to logistical constraints the Red Cross does not accept or solicit individual donations or collections of items. Items such as collected food, used clothing and shoes must be sorted, cleaned, repackaged and transported which impedes the valuable resources of money, time, and personnel.
The Red Cross does accept bulk quantities of product and services when these items meet our service delivery needs. These donations typically come from manufacturers, suppliers, and/or distributors that can package the items in bulk, palletize them and transport them directly to Red Cross sites. Financial contributions allow the Red Cross to purchase exactly what is needed for a disaster relief operation. Monetary donations also enable the Red Cross to purchase relief supplies close to the disaster site which avoids delays and transportation costs in getting basic necessities to disaster victims. Because the affected community has generally experienced significant economic loss, purchasing relief supplies in or close to the disaster site also helps to stimulate the weakened local economy.

People need to STFU and get out of the way of EMS responding to help those in need. Pundits, politicos, etc. And idiot bloggers/twitters can STFU if they're bloviating about this reaction or that reaction.
Christie is thinking about getting what's needed for millions of NJ residents who have been harmed by the storm. Millions without power. Power that might not be restored for weeks due to the unprecedented damage. SAR underway across the state including water rescues.
And the situation is probably the same across LI and CT shore areas.
The only thing worse than the storm is the reaction by the idiots to the storm.
BTW - getting those casinos reopened is actually quite important. The tax revenues from the casinos is critical to the state budget. It's a huge tourism hit - and the damage will harm tourism for years to come.

I gotta say, from the scientists predicting this right to the authorities being very direct and clear (aside from AC's mayor) about evacuation, this has shown the strength of science and government in helping people. Do you like how we were able to predict that it was going to curve back and hit land? Love this story...
Meet FDNY’s one-woman Twitter response team guiding New Yorkers through storm
As Hurricane Sandy barreled down on the northeast Monday, a one-woman response team at the Fire Department of New York monitored Twitter through the night to help people in need.
Emily Rahimi, a seven-year veteran at the FDNY, kept New Yorkers updated on developments from a storm that flooded many parts of the city Monday night through the official department Twitter feed. In a flurry of more than 100 tweets, Rahimi, who was still working at her desk Tuesday morning, replied to cries for help sent out on the social media service, passed along updates from Mayor Michael Bloomberg and followed up when New Yorkers posted tweets of thanks.
"I was just tweeting to people who were not able to get through to 911," Rahimi told Yahoo News.
Rahimi posted updates to the official FDNY Twitter account urging those facing emergencies to dial 911. Because the response effort was divided between city government agencies, calling 911 allowed dispatchers to filter out assignments instead of every request going to the Fire Department.
"*Do not* tweet emergency calls," Rahimi wrote as the storm hit.
But for those unable to access a phone or who could not get through, Rahimi was there to help.

And no, I don't like Moore or the ad. I wish Moore would STFU and go away. But I'm not buying the frame and the conclusions drawn on such sites as FreeRepublic, PJMedia, and WorldNetDaily...all of which are presenting this as The Most Horrible Thing ever. The circulation of this as "proof that all Democrats are violent" through the usual suspects of the RWNJ underbelly is particularly ripe, given the fairly routine calls to arms and the occasional fully articulated fantasy article of suburban militias gunning down "Minority Urban Youth" rioting. (Warning: Freeper Link). To say nothing of actual elected officials talking "second amendment solutions" and/or speculating about secession.
It's like above and beyond IOIYAR there's the advanced level "any use of violent language by a Democrat means all of them are horribly bestially violent...but we're totally going to fantasize about using our guns to protect ourselves from them and the Federal Government and/or killing and imprisoning people that we don't like, but you're not allowed to draw any conclusions about our state of mind from that."

Family sues FBI in fatal shooting of Detroit imam
Luqman Abdullah was killed when agents tried to arrest him at a Dearborn warehouse in 2009. He and his allies were accused of dealing stolen goods in an FBI sting operation.
A lawsuit filed Friday in federal court accuses the FBI of using excessive force in Abdullah's death. He was shot 20 times. The FBI has defended what happened, saying Abdullah was armed and resisted arrest.
The Michigan attorney general said the shooting was justified. The U.S. Justice Department's civil rights division also found no wrongdoing.

Hand disaster relief to the states? Well, let's see how Romney handled that as a governor....
"This was not unusual for him. He didn’t understand infrastructure improvements. It was just the bottom line. He never visited communities. He never understood the issues. He never sat down with mayors or city managers. He never understood why those things were in the budget," Barrett said. "That money was requested by locals. It was a major league problem.”
"I don't think it was because he was heartless, he just didn't know. That's how he ran his state," Bosley said. "His understanding of why you have government, I don't think he ever had it."

Disaster relief is a political subject, especially when one of the candidates thinks that privatizing disaster relief is a good idea, and his party tries to hold disaster relief funds hostage to get cuts in other programs, and defunds the scientific programs that allow us to make these predictions and save lives.
It's completely right to point out the dangers of Romney and the GOP's extremism on the subject of science, climate, and government preparedness.

In fact, Romney's statement on disaster relief and government spending in general is so stupid it's just appalling, especially from someone seeking to become President.
Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better.
This kind of extremist confederate talk is poisonous and hearing it from a guy who wants to be head of the federal government is just pathetic. The GOP is running an anti-government platform, and Romney is specifically supporting that here. This was specifically when talking about disaster relief, which is one of the stupidest, stupidest areas to think of 'privatizing'. People who have just had their houses devastated are not in a good position to be served by the private market. Even leaving aside the idiocy of saying 'every time', the fact that he was specifically talking about disaster relief shows either that Romney really holds extremist Tea Party ideology above all practical reality, or he just doesn't care to even understand the realities of disaster relief.

Listened to Romney's non-campaign campaign relief speech this morning. He bragged about how as Governor some Katrina refugees from New Orleans were flown to Boston (then joked about how they thought they were going to Houston), and then went on about the generosity of Massachusetts residents who brought not only food, but big items, like TVs!!! to the shelter.
When people are donating TVs, they're not doing it because they think people need to watch Fox News...that's called tax deductible waste disposal.

That's one way to get rid of your old CRT TV's.

It's about as outrageous as Obama scheduling a call bank in Virginia yesterday during the storm. I'm sure it was planned way ahead of time. Some people are going to go nuts about both of these anyway. Just more selective outrage, that's all.

Not an asshole. Just willfully ignorant, and possibly an opportunist.
The Red Cross has repeatedly said, both publicly and (according to their reports) directly to both campaigns, that they can't do anything with donated goods. Most of those will just end up wasted.
But signing a piece of paper doesn't look as impressive as lifting (badly - I agree he's going to have a bad back later) a couple of cases of water.

re: #554 Dark_Falcon

Yes.

I don't think the food and bottled water is going to the red cross but there are food banks and other places that can make good use of such donations. Both Obama and Mitt have encouraged monetary donations to the red cross. There's nothing outrageous going on here.

This is what he has always done in the face of disasters--it's what Mormons do. Organize and work. Sending in a check and doing nothing would be the opposite of what he normally does in this type of situation.
Look what he did when the daughter of his colleague went missing--he personally organized the search efforts.

Well, judging by his past actions as governor towards disaster relief, it seems he's more focussed on purely the bottom line as opposed to what the bottom line does.

Any way he goes about it, he's really not helping as much as he thinks he is. The Red Cross is organized and prepared. A spur-of-the-moment bit of opportunism from Romney is not really helpful.
Support for the president would be a lot more helpful, but instead Romney is casting vague aspersions in his direction while continuing to campaign.
