Think the big part of his appeal is he explains the reasoning behind his predictions, has actually explained his model (bit wordy for my tastes, but still), and doesn't play fast and loose with his own rules in order to junk polls he doesn't like (lookin' at you, RCP).

Baseball has always been ruled by stats, but it took Bill James to come along and devise a whole different set of stats that can help judge performance better.
Silver is from that school of thought.
Now, if we can get Silver to work on economics, we'd be much better off...

A good point to mention to those who think Nate is just being a partisan because he likes and worked for Obama is that he was pointing to a Walker victory in Wisconsin during that recall and he pretty much was accurate about the midterms too. In fact, he actually slightly overestimated how the Republicans would do that year. A partisan hack wouldn't do that. He's good at what he does. Makes me understand and appreciate math more. Plus his articles are always informative because there's some history thrown in there from time to time too.

Don't get me wrong; I do understand that math can be ironclad. We know the decay rates of isotopes, how fast things will fall in a vacuum, what compounded interest rates will yield and all that.
But I like to think that people are different, more open to reason, and that the soul — particularly when multiplied into the complexity of a society — is not so easily number-crunched.

I love voter suppression logic. Women voting is bad because if they're married and they vote they either annul or double their husband's vote. It's a semantically true statement that is abso-fucking-lutely meaningless. You could use that logic to say that only one person should be allowed to vote, because any other person would just double or annul his vote.

The decay rates of isotopes are a probability. After something's half-life, you can predict that about half of the unstable element will have converted, but just 'about'. You might get something decaying more rapidly, or less. Famously, this is why isotope decay is used in some Heisenberg thought experiments as an example of a random and non-predictable event.
So he's like, double-wrong.

I'm not saying Silver's just lucky or shoveling garbage. He's a serious numbers guy. But so are the folks at the University of Colorado's political science department whose own model is based on economic indicators. Its Oct. 4 findings predict Romney will win, as do others.
The point is, the models are all over the map. They can't all be right
The models aren't all over the map. There's A model, which simply looks at the economy and says "Hey, the economy isn't great under this President, people probably won't vote for him." And then there's all the other models, which actually look at what voters are actually saying.

ON a more serious and somber note about Nate Silver's stats:
He does them seriously. He does them well. He will be the first to tell you that Romney still has a shot.
He is not saying and has not said "Obama will definitely win."
What he said was, in effect, based on the analysis, and all the poling data he could get his hands on, Obama has a 90% chance of victory.
That means there is a one in ten chance of Romney winning.
Hopefully you would not be stupid enough to get on a plane if the pilot said there is a 10% chance of us crashing with a near 100% chance of you dying in a mangled state if we do.
What we are looking at as a nation is still a 10% chance of Romney and his GOP fascist freaks destroying America.
Hence, any "soul" involved here would be best put to those who pray, praying hard.

And back then, there was pretty much only one, simple, national poll. As opposed to hundreds of polls coming out every single day.
There's another point to that too. They were doing only telephone polling. Still a fair amount of families without telephones then. Your point still stands though. Polling wasn't the science it is now back then. Silver's conclusions strike me as absolutely right. If someone is consistently performing ahead in a poll, they are likely to win that election. It's that simple and Nate has shown evidence to support that but his moronic right wing detractors continue to accuse him of being an Obama mouthpiece because he writes for the Times.
45 | lawhawk Tue, Nov 6, 2012 12:31:14pm |
re: #43 JamesWI
That's the strength of Silver's analysis. He subjects those individual polls to scrutiny and then aggregates them to divine trends and projections of outcomes using the MCM. It isn't quite a crystal ball, but it expands the sample size and reduces margin of error in the process.
Well, that and the fact that he's transparent on his methodologies.

Another bit is that the University of Colorado's model is sold on a false premise, namely that it's correctly "predicted" 8 elections. No, what they did was build a model, use it to correctly predict one election, then apply the model to past elections, taking correct "predictions" as vindication of the model.
By contrast, Silver's model has been used in two elections and been 80-90% accurate. And it's built on actually looking at past polls and running the numbers, instead of trying to fit a model to the numbers.

ABC affiliate WSYX in Columbus aired a half-hour “election special” twice on Monday night — first at 6:30 p.m. instead of World News with Diane Sawyer, and later at 11:30 p.m., during the slot normally held by Nightline. Rather than a side by side comparison of the two major party candidates, however, the special featured some of the most partisan criticisms of President Barack Obama, and spent relatively little time examining Republican nominee Mitt Romney.

Nothing was going to stop first-time voter Galicia Malone from casting her ballot in Tuesday’s US elections — not even the imminent birth of her first child.
The 21-year-old from Dolton, Illinois, a suburb of President Barack Obama’s adopted hometown Chicago, had been in labor since the middle of the night, with contractions five minutes apart.
But she insisted en route to hospital on stopping at her local polling station — the aptly named New Life Celebration Church — to cast her ballot, Cook County clerk David Orr said in a news release..

So if Puerto Rico votes yes on that. They'll become a state? This is the longest gap in history we've had in between statehood for states by the way.

Newt Gingrich appeared on Steve Deace's radio program last evening to explain why Mitt Romney is going to win the election, which makes sense given Gingrich's steller* record of making accurate election predictions.
During the discussion, Gingrich said that another Obama administration would be a "nightmare" because an "arrogant" and "divisive" Obama wants to make sure that "the government which is currently failing in Hurricane Sandy" will be delivering your healthcare:

Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards
In the 2003 invasion of Iraq by a United States-led coalition, the U.S. military developed a set of playing cards to help troops identify the most-wanted members of President Saddam Hussein's government, mostly high-ranking Baath Party members or members of the Revolutionary Command Council. The cards were officially named the "personality identification playing cards".

I have returned from voting.
I discovered that polling places were combined in a recent redistricting, and my place that I've been going forever absorbed what used to be 2 other places. So what I believed to be hugely increased turnout... is actually just that my spot has to serve more people now. Plus the storm-displaced people, they have a special procedure and their votes for state assembly and state senator don't count.
But it's been running at fully capacity all day, I waited about 20 minutes and the line was still that length when I was done. (I was #538, I took that as a good omen).

I love the Isaac Asimov short story where one guy gets surveyed by a mega-computer which then extrapolates the (binding) presidential election result.

Turmoil Follows As Pennsylvania Voter ID Law Meets Reality
The Election Protection coalition’s voter hotline here began lighting up with complaints soon after polls opened. Some voters said they were upset about being asked for photo identification. Others said they had been turned away because they did not provide it.
“We’ve definitely gotten reports about voters being turned away,” Eric Marshall, co-director of the Election Protection coalition, told TPM. “We’ve had reports of people who have shown up, been asked, and when they didn’t show ID they were turned away.”
Marshall said voting rights advocates were working to resolves the issues as quickly as possible. Assistant Philadelphia District Attorney Peter Berson also told the Philadelphia Inquirer that his office had received complaints about poll workers who misunderstood the ruling.
Voting rights advocates had expressed worry about confusion on Election Day as soon as Pennsylvania Judge Robert Simpson issued his ruling in early October. Some advocates blamed state authorities for failing to properly train poll workers.

Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. In Germany they vote on a Sunday. But not in churches. Often in schools, public buildings, community centers, or in the local pub.
Well, now I'm off to my local religious institution's hallowed hall to cast my secular vote under a gleaning white cross... this is America.
Anyway, I pretty much gave up trying to research all the individuals running for local boards. The problem here in San Diego is that quite a few theocrats try to plant themselves on local hospital or school district boards, to be used as a springboard for their other agendas.
Plus, many of the local politicians like to be chummy with various "Patriot" groups, so weeding those out is tough too.

Republicans are complaining about being suppressed.
Really:
PA Republicans feel suppressed by elementary school’s Obama mural
A painting of President Barack Obama that elementary students voted in 2009 to put on their school’s wall is now actively suppressing Mitt Romney voters, according to a statement from the Pennsylvania Republican Party.
Numerous complaints from Republicans voting in Philadelphia’s 35th Ward began coming in this morning, giving the Pennsylvania State Republican Committee cause to request a judge intervene. The Democratic City Committee of Philadelphia agreed with their complaint, noting that any campaign images inside a polling place are considered electioneering, which is illegal.
Acknowledging the two parties’ agreement, a judge in Philadelphia ordered poll workers to cover the mural with paper so that its content is not visible, and they did.
“The Obama campaign is 0-for-2 today in trying to get away with their disgusting attempts to suppress Republican voices in Philadelphia,” state GOP chairman Rob Gleason told CBS Philly.[...]

Mitt Romney is by no means a perfect candidate. He may have no coherent or consistent principles beyond a steadfast belief in his own superhuman competence. He may have surrounded himself with charlatans and liars in his pursuit of power for the sake of flattering his staggering self-importance. His vice-presidential nominee may be a bizarre combination of overgrown adolescent Randian and pious ultra-Catholic misogynist. He may have a sociopathic indifference to the concept of honesty.
But there is still a chance that he will magically decide to do all the things that I like and want him to do once he is office.

It is true that the modern Republican Party is extremist, irresponsible, reckless and wholly unfit to govern. They campaign with grotesque white populism, stoke bigotry and xenophobia, and shamelessly work to suppress legal votes by poor and minority citizens. In Congress their unprecedented obstruction sabotaged the economic recovery and ground even routine federal business to a standstill.
This, again, is why we must elect Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee for president.
You see, only with a Republican in the White House is the Republican Party willing to occasionally sometimes act somewhat responsibly. With various worldwide economic and military crises likely to require urgent attention in the coming years, we need our Republicans to be only a little bit reckless and stupid, and not apocalyptically so.
So because the GOP is a bunch of whiny bitches, we need to just go ahead and let them get their way.

Even if it is technically electioneering, and everyone agreed it ought to be covered up, it is hardly "suppressing" anyone.
Heck, I'm about to go to a religious institution to cast my ballot - which has been the case for several years now, it seems - and while I think it is a bit crazy I don't feel "suppressed" by all the religious symbols. Perhaps some others might feel intimidated and I wish purely secular locations would be used for polling stations, but it still doesn't count as "suppression".

Probably an indicator of the election outcome:
News Summary: US home prices rise most in 6 years
ANNUAL PRICES RISE: U.S. home prices jumped 5 percent in September compared with a year ago, the largest year-over-year increase since July 2006, according to data provider CoreLogic.
MONTHLY PRICES DIP: Prices declined 0.3 percent in September from August, the first drop after six straight increases. The monthly figures are not seasonally adjusted. CoreLogic says the decline reflects the end of the summer home-buying season and not a softening in the recovery.
SUSTAINED RECOVERY: The data suggest the recovery is sustainable. Rising prices encourage more homeowners to sell their homes and entice would-be buyers to purchase homes before prices rise further.

Ventura County Clerk and Recorder Mark Lunn, who was visiting a handful of the county's 367 polling sites this morning and plans to visit more this afternoon, said although some voting machines had jammed, things were "going well overall."
Lunn also noticed the robust numbers of voters at the sites. He said that today's turnout may come close to the county's record in 2008 when 80.6 percent of registered voters came out for that year's presidential elections.
"A month ago I felt that it would be a while before we would see that (turnout) again," Lunn said. "I don't know whether we'll get to 80 percent, but we'll get a lot closer to 80 percent than I would've guessed a month ago."

Romney and some Republicans are actually for that. Truth is, and the racists don't like this, that the country club Republicans know that adding PR as a state would not be deleterious to the US and likely would be a slight economic uptick. Many politicians in PR are Republicans, something which the hard core racists acknowledge in their dismissal of both major US political parties.

So if Puerto Rico votes yes on that. They'll become a state? This is the longest gap in history we've had in between statehood for states by the way.
My best guess is that it will start a process for the Congress to recognize the bid for statehood. Realistically, it will die there.

From MPR News reporter Elizabeth Dunbar:There were scattered reports from voters who saw signs or messages related to the marriage amendment at churches that were serving as polling places. That included Saint John Vianney in South St. Paul, where a banner that read “Strengthen Marriage, don’t redefine it” could be seen by voters entering the church.
“I was shocked, I didn’t think that would be allowed,” said Ivan Kowalenko, who tweeted a photo of the sign. “II was hearing that you’re not allowed to wear any political slogan of your own, so it doesn’t seem entirely appropriate that a voting venue would be allowed to express an opinion.”
Funny, Fox News did not cover that one.....

Voted around noon and just ogt back from canvassing with my 12 year old son here in Greensboro, NC.
Some very irate Romney guy in a work pick up truck stopped in the middle of the road to scream obscenities at us.
My son looked confused and wondered why he was so upset. I said “Because he knows he is losing”.
OMG. They're losing it!
Hubby is still out there, and some crazy Romney supporter just cussed at him.
Mind you, he's been out there since 7:30.

Yeah, Congress has to vote. Both Obama and Romney have said they'd support it if it passes.....with a "clear majority." The polls look like it'll only win with a clear plurality, so I doubt it will happen.

By the way, the Republicans seem to have absolutely no ground game here. The lawns are thick with Romney and Scott Brown signs (I think they outnumber the Democratic signs, though I haven't actually counted), but there was not a single Republican sign holder at either of the polling places I visited this morning, except for one guy holding a sign for one of the state legislature candidates.
The referendum is a two-part question:
1) Do the voters want to keep the current political status?
2) Disregarding the first question, which non-colonial status would you prefer?
A pro-Statehood win would be meaningless if the first question wins the Yes (keep current status).

Polarized Election Season Marked by Extremist Candidates
Posted in Extremist Propaganda by Evelyn Schlatter on October 19, 2012
Oh look! Ted Cruz!
Ted Cruz (R-Texas)
Office sought: U.S. Senate
Ted Cruz Tea Party-backed Cruz is running as the GOP candidate for the Senate seat vacated by Kay Bailey Hutchinson. The Harvard-educated attorney, a former solicitor general of Texas and law clerk for Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist, claims that the U.N.’s 1992 non-binding resolution and general guidelines for sustainability and ending poverty is a plot led by liberal billionaire George Soros to “abolish” unsustainable environments, including golf courses and grazing pastures. He co-authored a proposal that would open a way for states to nullify federal laws. Cruz thinks the imposition of Shariah Islamic law in the U.S. is “an enormous problem” (it’s not even possible under the Constitution, let alone a big problem). In his first campaign ad in the GOP primary, he encouraged people to vote for him because he once fought to ensure the execution of an undocumented immigrant in a murder case. He’s tough on LGBT people, too. At the 2011 Values Voter Summit, hosted by the gay-bashing Family Research Council, which the Southern Poverty Law Center lists as a hate group for its defamatory and false propaganda, Cruz railed against the “gay rights agenda” and warned about new threats to “religious liberty.”
