Several days ago I made a snarky post about treating inclusion like some kind of video game achievement, but beneath the cattiness there was an actual point: if you’re viewing the inclusion of some people of [minority group x] as a magic shield against all criticism of your held positions about [minority group x], then you’re a bare minimum missing the point, and more likely are vastly cynical.
71 | Eclectic Cyborg Thu, Mar 14, 2013 11:17:09am |
Most of these morons can’t grasp the concept that “redistribution of wealth” is the core of ANY economic system.
Money is always moving, it’s always going somewhere and there’s always a FINITE amount of it. Yes, more can be printed, but you can’t endlessly print money without devaluing a currency and crashing an economy.
That means we have to live in an America with a finite amount money which inevitably gets distributed somewhere. Even if the government isn’t in the picture at all, there’s still money being “redistributed”.
A company makes $100 million, its customers have “distributed” their money to it in exchange for goods and services. The company then turns around and “redistributes” it in order to be able to provide more goods and services as well as salaries for their employees, bonuses for their managers, air conditioning for their offices and so on and so forth.
A lopsided wealth distribution, where a select few hold the majority of the money, does not make for a very strong economic system, nor for high morale among citizens.

Crime Lab Scandal Leaves Mass. Legal System In Turmoil
A scandal in a Massachusetts crime lab continues to reverberate throughout the state’s legal system. Several months ago, Annie Dookhan, a former chemist in a state crime lab, told police that she messed up big time. Dookhan now stands accused of falsifying test results in as many as 34,000 cases.
As a result, lawyers, prosecutors and judges used to operating in a world of “beyond a reasonable doubt” now have nothing but doubt.
Already, hundreds of convicts and defendants have been released because of the scandal. Now, the state’s highest court may weigh in on how these cases should be handled.
“I don’t think anyone ever perceived that one person was capable of causing this much chaos,” says Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrisey, one of many DAs now digging through old drug cases, trying to sort out how many should now be considered tainted.
“You can see the entire walls full of boxes,” Morrissey says, gesturing at dusty files piled six feet high in a conference room near his office. “In one of these cardboard boxes, there could be hundreds of cases … in each box.”
The cases represent nearly a decade’s worth of work that could take years and tens of millions of dollars to review.

A man suspected of involvement in the September attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Benghazi is being held in Libya, according to two sources who have spoken with CNN.
Both sources confirmed the man’s name as Faraj al-Shibli (also spelled Chalabi). One of the sources, who has been briefed on the arrest by Western intelligence officials, said al-Shibli was detained within the past two days and had recently returned from a trip to Pakistan.

I’m seeing quite a few tweets about how Obamacare is so long/difficult to apply for.
10 Things That Are Simpler Than Applying For Obamacare buzzfeed.com/annanorth/10-t… via @buzzfeedshift— Ben Smith (@BuzzFeedBen) March 14, 2013
What exactly are they comparing it to? For someone who couldn’t get insurance before - say for a preexisting condition, the application might not be ideal, but they are getting insurance (something Ryan and the rest want to abolish).
This is the draft application, and it isn’t actually that hard. It has a bunch of pages - 21 in total, but that’s in part due to the need to deal with more than one person being covered (say in a household). An individual wouldn’t need to fill out most of the form (or 10 out of the 21 pages). It includes instructions that add to the page count, and some wouldn’t apply to most of those seeking insurance in this manner (the page for Native Americans wouldn’t apply for one).
And it ignores the amount of information that insurers get from employers during the annual benefits scramble that includes much of this information too.
The comparison to the tax form is somewhat illustrative. The 1040EZ is quite short, but if you’ve got an itemized return, you’re going to use the long form and have to include any number of schedules and worksheets to complete. It could potentially be much longer than the draft insurance form.
The draft form is meant to deal with the most common situations and most people wont need to utilize all 21 pages (or more if with a larger family).

re: #71 Eclectic Cyborg
My god, what is this? An actual understanding of basic economics?
As said, an ideal money supply is not increasing, or at the very least not increasing with any sort of speed — that’s inflation, and makes your dollar buy less than it did before because there are more dollars to go around for the same products. So really, in an ideal situation, what’s happening is the continuous cycling of a relatively static money supply.
1. The people buy products, which transfers money from the people to the companies.
2. The companies buy products, which transfers money from the companies to the other companies.
3. The companies all eventually pay their employees, which transfers money from the companies to the people.
4. GOTO 1.
To concentrate the wealth (money supply) at one end, you have to shift it away from the other end. And pretty much every economic chart or data set you can find will show you the same thing: it’s been flowing from the bottom to the top since the 70s. The companies (that is to say, the people at the top of the companies) are doing everything in their power to ensure that they keep the majority of the money by reducing the money they give to their lower-rank employees, replacing them with cheap labor in other countries or replacing humans altogether with robots.
The problem is that these short-sighted masters of avarice fail to account for the cycle. The more they squeeze their employees, the less money the people have to buy the products, which chokes off the flow. They’re slowly starving themselves by stuffing their gobs full to overflowing with cash, heedless of the fact that it’s making eating difficult.
Eventually, as happens in all national economic collapses, the stuffed gullets of the top clog entirely, and the beast starves and dies.

Norquist: Republicans who raise taxes ‘are rat heads in a Coke bottle’
Speaking to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Thursday, the Americans for Tax Reform founder employed an unusual metaphor to blast Republicans who violated their pledge to never raise taxes.
“We had the pledge out there and we branded the modern Republican as the party that would not raise your taxes,” Norquist explained. “Branding is important. Coca-Cola spends a lot of time, quality control branding Coca-Cola. Everybody knows what’s in Coca-Cola. And so you can buy a bottle of Coke, take it home, you don’t have to ask what’s in it.”
“You get two-thirds the way through your bottle of Coke and you look in and there’s a rat head in what’s left in your Coke bottle,” he continued. “You begin to wonder whether you will buy Coke in the future, you go on local TV and you show the cool rat head. Coca-Cola has a very large problem worldwide. It damages the brand.”
“Republican elected officials who vote for tax increases are rat heads in the Coke bottle. They damage the brand for everybody else.”

re: #126 GunstarGreen
Well, because we don’t have a static population, we actually do need a growing money supply. A reasonable amount of inflation serves useful functions, especially when the economy isn’t running on all cylinders like ours right now. It tells consumers to buy, and producers they can hire more employees and increase production. With 20 million Americans either unemployed or underemployed, the Fed would do well to encourage inflation to at least reach its target level of 2%.

I’ve tried to limit myself to only eating meat at dinner time. Sticking with cereal and oatmeal for breakfast. Yogurt and fruit for lunch. Weekends I relax a little because of sleeping in, going out with the family for meals, etc.
Marrying a vegetarian (who’s cool with me occasionally eating meat) was perhaps the best thing that ever happened to me health-wise (it was certainly the best thing that ever happened to me in general).

It’s like you combined the worst, most unappealing and destructive qualities of a narcissist, a hoarder, and a sadist into an entire class of people, and removed all obstacles to their ruinous behavior. And then for good measure handed them an entire political party full of crazies and ass-kissers who are only in government as a CV-building stepping stone to a corporate lobbying job.

We had a similar problem a few years ago here in Ontario. A pathologist turned out to be completely incompetent and a lot of people were released from prison because this guy fucked up big time.
There was a pretty heinous pathologist in the Texas Panhandle several years ago. I remember one of the “bodies stored in an abandoned house” stories from the newspapers but I’ve never found an inking of it on line.
Because he covered a rural area, Dr. Erdmann did not always work under ideal conditions. In cases of decomposing bodies, many of the smaller hospitals denied him access to autopsy space because of the stink. As a result, he performed autopsies in funeral home garages, hospital loading docks, parking lots, and abandoned houses. Dr. Erdmann once performed an autopsy on a door laid across two 55-gallon drums.
It wasn’t just his take-charge work ethic that made Dr. Erdmann so popular with detectives and county prosecutors. What they especially liked about this pathologist was his unabashed eagerness to tailor his autopsy findings to their law enforcement needs. If the prosecution needed a victim or suspect to have alcohol in his or her blood, no problem. It didn’t matter that no blood-alcohol test had been administered. If a certain time of death was necessary to incriminate a defendant, Dr. Erdmann would provide it, even if such a precise estimation was not scientifically feasible.

I don’t drink soda either, haven’t since I was about 14. Can’t stand the sticky consistency of the sugared stuff. As for the no-sugar alternatives, I have always been deeply suspicious of artificial sweeteners. I am told, for example, that uranium oxide is sweet to the taste. I don’t know who discovered this or what became of them. Soda sweetener might just be a sweeter and more soluble formulation of that yellow-cake cheese-like substance they include in Kraft Mac and Cheese Dinner.

As said, an ideal money supply is not increasing, or at the very least not increasing with any sort of speed — that’s inflation, and makes your dollar buy less than it did before because there are more dollars to go around for the same products.
My take on inflation is not that it is a problem, it is a diagnostic tool. Like the human body temperature.
A human with a temperature of 106F (41C) is very sick. Something fun like a hemorrhagic fever or meth addiction. Similarly someone with a temperature of 95F (35C) is also very sick. Maybe bleeding out, or has been in ice cold water.
In either case, the temperature isn’t the problem. It’s an indicator there is a problem.
I believe it’s the same with inflation. A certain amount indicates a healthy economy. Wide variations from the norm means problems.
My take on it.

Seriously, it’s quite an accomplishment when CPAC wants nothing to you because you’re too nuts and then you go out and prove it by accusing them of being Muslim Brotherhood infiltrated. I mean I don’t like CPAC either but really, Spencer, infiltrated by the Muslim Brotherhood. I swear, that’s this dumbass and his stupid pal Pam’s response to anyone who doesn’t want anything to with them, THEY MUST BE MUSLIM TERRORISTS. Or it could be that your batshit is annoying.

Gays Out, Racists in at CPAC, Again
Last year we wrote about how CPAC allowed notorious white nationalists to speak on multiple panels but banned the gay conservative group GOProud. This year the CPAC organizers, who aren’t entirely oblivious to the 2012 election, are trying to emphasize diversity. There’s even a panel entitled, “Conservative Inclusion: Promoting the Freedom Message to all Americans,” which boasts a racially diverse lineup of conservative activists.
“Conservative inclusion” is a nice idea, but it doesn’t go very far at CPAC. For the second year in a row, the gay conservative group GOProud has been banned from the conference. So at best, “inclusion” at CPAC means “straights only.”
Even more telling is the roster of sponsors and exhibitors at CPAC. Most troubling is the inclusion of the anti-immigrant group ProEnglish, which is run by longtime white nationalist organizer Bob Vandervoort. The Institute for Research & Education on Human Rights has reported extensively on his activities:

The LCR and GOProud consist of fools with enough money to think they won’t be nailed by the social conservative vipers they are cozening up to.
Their money puts them far down on the target list, because easier targets are preferred. However, no amount of money can get them off the target list.

Man commits suicide in front of children during gun safety class
A 50-year-old man shot and killed himself in front of a group of people, including children, who were attending a gun safety class Sunday in Bellevue, Washington, according to The Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
Brian J. Parry reportedly used a pistol provided to participants to end his life in front of about a dozen people. A coroner’s report issued earlier in the week ruled his death a suicide, the Intelligencer noted.

John Eastman, National Organization For Marriage Leader, Calls Adoption ‘Second-Best Option’
The leader of a prominent anti-gay organization called Supreme Court Chief John Roberts’ decision to adopt children the “second-best option,” the AP reports.
“You’re looking at what is the best course societywide to get you the optimal result in the widest variety of cases. That often is not open to people in individual cases. Certainly adoption in families headed, like Chief Roberts’ family is, by a heterosexual couple, is by far the second-best option,” said John Eastman, chairman of the National Organization for Marriage.
Eastman was responding to a question about the Chief Justice’s position on the rights of same-sex couples. Roberts and his wife adopted two children, Jack and Josie, in 2000. Both children are now 12 years old.

Census: Record 1 in 3 US counties are now dying
Census data show that 1,135 of the nation’s 3,143 counties are now experiencing “natural decrease,” where deaths exceed births. That’s up from roughly 880 U.S. counties, or 1 in 4, in 2009. Already apparent in Japan and many European nations, natural decrease is now increasingly evident in large swaths of the U.S., much of it rural.
Despite increasing deaths, the U.S. population as a whole continues to grow, boosted by immigration from abroad and relatively higher births among the mostly younger migrants from Mexico, Latin America and Asia.
“These counties are in a pretty steep downward spiral,” said Kenneth Johnson, a senior demographer and sociology professor at the University of New Hampshire, who researched the findings. “The young people leave and the older adults stay in place and age. Unless something dramatic changes — for instance, new development such as a meatpacking plant to attract young Hispanics — these areas are likely to have more and more natural decrease.”

After Sandy Hook, NRA Told Gun Makers LaPierre Would Handle It
According to a new BloombergBusinessweek article, the relationship between the country’s most visible gun rights advocacy organization and the industry itself is more complex than commonly understood. In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December, for instance, executives from major U.S gun makers contacted the NRA, looking for help handling the public-relations crisis.
“[T]he NRA reassured nervous gun company reps that they could stand down, according to people familiar with the situation,” reporter Paul Barrett wrote in the article published on Thursday. “[NRA chief Wayne] LaPierre would handle it.”
Gun companies have given millions of dollars to the NRA over the years, but according to Barrett, the NRA maintains quite a bit of power over its donors:

The president of one of the nation’s oldest gun manufacturers closed down his Connecticut factory Thursday morning and bused 400 of his workers to the state Capitol so they could personally urge lawmakers not to pass gun control legislation that they say could risk their livelihoods.
Dennis Veilleux, president of the Hartford-based Colt’s Manufacturing Co., said even though he has spoken with legislators and Gov. Dannel P. I’m still thinking about the Scott Prouty interview on MSNBC. (the guy who took and released the 47% video of Romney).
There isn’t a Wiki on him yet and Ed, the interviewer from the Ed Show, really didn’t delve into the guy’s past or education.
on wiki at en.wikipedia.org but awaiting wiki’s “notability guildeline for biographies”.

Vincent DePaul truck came to our house this afternoon and said that the living room sectional I wanted to donate WAS TOO CRAPPY FOR THEM and they refused to accept it.
That sucks because our new furniture is being delivered on Sunday.
Zedushka found a junk hauler to take it away but he has a sad that Vincent DePaul thought our furniture sucked.

The video I linked to on YouTube is an interesting documentary about the effect of the Moon, and how much it’s necessary.
What I was referring to in that it would drive the RWNJ’s bonkers is that
A) it’s science!
B) it deals with evolution!
C) The presenter is a black female scientist!!
Hat trick of wingnut head ‘splodey factors.

Just arrived in Dallas to catch a couple of Stars hockey games with some buddies. Thanks for the CPAC entertainment while on the road, lizards. I haven’t laughed this hard at the idiocy since, well, yesterday.
Or something like that… Go Ducks tonight, and Hawks on Saturday! (I hate Dallas, actually)
“commie country”? Is that what they are calling Canada now?

There was that Fritz Leiber story “A Pail of Air” in which the Earth has no Moon nor Sun after a dark sun pulls us out of orbit and away.

Ugh…reading resumes is so much fun. Hey, you’ve got 20 years of experience and you still have your college GPA on your resume? 3.5? Awesome…you were a B student!
You would not believe the conflicting advice out there about resumes. I’ve got a bunch, all redesigned by people who “see resumes all the time”.
Make it a standard layout/format, but make it stand out. Keep it short, but put in your experience - and don’t forget the proofs for your claims.

Speaking of Canadians, I know they have a reputation for politeness (and I’ve no doubt this has been linked already), but after seeing This YouTube clip, I don’t particularly feel like tangling with one.

I remember that one. The kid has to go out and collect frozen Oxygen. Iirc, at the end, they get “rescued” and the rescuers get drunk from the high O2 levels in their shelter.

His was a laundry list of keywords and gibberish. I told the recruiter I didn’t even want to talk to him. Not a single detail about what he’d done at any of his dozens of contracting gigs…and the fact that he only had four perm positions in 20 years was pretty telling.
I did get a couple of other good resumes though…two I’m very excited about. Love a good engineer on paper.

THEY TOTALLY DO! IT’S CALLED COMIC-CON!

Don’t know (anybody know?), but I loves me some Leiber.
(Though a couple stories in Swords & Ice Magic and The Knight & Knave of Swords squick me.)
