Right Wing Blogs Turning to UK Tabloids; US Media Not Unreliable Enough

Rube watch
Wingnuts • Views: 31,703

There aren’t enough unsubstantiated rumors in American media for the Right Wing Blogosphere Unison Bigots’ Chorus, so now they’re turning to British tabloids like The Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror for their hit of xenophobia juice: Boston Bombers: FBI Hunting 12-Strong Terrorist “Sleeper Cell” Linked to Brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev - Mirror Online.

Unnamed sources.

British tabloid, otherwise dedicated to celebrity gossip.

Perhaps not something you should bet the farm on, especially after all the fake stories that have been floating about, wouldn’t you think?

But that’s the key word: “think.” That’s not something right wing blogs specialize in. It used to be; I have a vague memory of something called “fact-checking” they used to consider important. Or maybe I’m just imagining that, looking at the past through rose-colored glasses, because if they ever did give one solitary shit about credibility outside their own echo chamber, there’s no evidence of it any more.

Look at ‘em go!

It’s entirely possible that there is a connection between the Tsarnaev brothers and a terrorist group. The older brother spent time in Russia recently, and according to credible reports had become more radicalized in recent days, so there could very well be connections we don’t know about yet.

But if there’s a “sleeper cell” with 12 members being hunted by the FBI, which sounds amazingly like an episode of 24, I’m going to need a slightly better source than the freaking Daily Mirror. And it speaks volumes that these idiots fall for and enthusiastically push every fear-mongering bullshit story that comes out, regardless of source.

if there’s a “sleeper cell” with 12 members being hunted by the FBI, I’d sleep better if the Daily Mirror hadn’t tipped them off that the FBI is on to them.

Even better, if there’s a “sleeper cell” with 12 members being hunted by the FBI, I’d sleep better if the FBI were able to keep that quiet until they roll ‘em up.

Hm…bathing. I could probably do that myself about now (mowed, weeded, painted, did laundry, cleaned the kitchen, and made another batch of Kombucha…and I took the dogs for a two hour play at the beach). Watching the Padres@Giants right now though…will bathe after the 7th inning.

Kind of a crappy image, but I am confused: any ideas what this is? Thin small glass …something, has little feet on the bottom and two semi-circle indents on the short sides. My best guess involves something to do with chopsticks but I really have no idea.

Also, Southwest, e-mailing me that my trip is ‘just around the corner’ makes me freak out and think that I got the month wrong on my booking. Maybe send out that reminder like a week in advance, not a month?

re: #28 klys

It looks a bit like a glue-shoe for a travelling cobbler. You see, back in the early 1950s, there was a sudden collapse of the shoe industry. You see, the shoe industry couldn’t keep up with the zesty, go-for-broke tempo of the returning GIs and their lusty, lusty dames. Those snapping daddys and their girls just wore the soles out of shoes so fast that supply couldn’t keep up. So for a brief shining moment, the traveling shoe repairman, the humble cobbler, rose to new heights.

But baby, he couldn’t be some old Schlemiel with a leather apron and avuncular demeanor. These were the 50s, the future was here! Where an old cobbler would have heated his glue on a leather strap or in a crude tin pan, the 1950s cobbler— or Joe Shoes, as they were known— used a lucite dish which he could warm with a small heating element he brought along with him. Thus, the glue-shoe.

It is either a corn-on-the-cob tray or a “relish tray” for stuff like carrot sticks, celery sticks, olives.

33 Vicious Babushka  Sun, Apr 21, 2013 3:10:43pm

Who ever eats celery sticks? Raw celery is useless, it’s only good for soups, stews & stir fry.

The “diet industry” pushed the idea of raw celery as a torture instrument to punish people for being fat.

It’s a corn cob tray. The shape of the dish - notably the notches on both ends and the inlaid design is a dead giveaway.

President & Mrs. Obama visit Boston bombing victims.

BOSTON (CBS) - President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama visited victims of the Boston Marathon bombings at several hospitals Thursday afternoon.

After attending an interfaith service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the president rode to Massachusetts General Hospital where he met privately with patients, their families and hospital staff.

The First Lady went to Boston Children’s Hospital, where she visited the medical and surgical intensive care unit.

Afterwards, she went next door to Brigham and Women’s Hospital to meet more victims and their families for more than an hour.

I’m going to repost this here, as it’s applicable to Charles’ post, as well as to CuriousLurker’s page:

I’m late to this particular post - mostly because I was on vacation, but I’ve gotten a chance to skim through Charles’ postings and other reports the past week about the bombing. Glad that Charles and most others here kept a level head about the developing situation and knowing not to jump to conclusions (hey, they should make a game about that or something).

Jumping to conclusions is all too easy to do, and waiting for more information may mean missing out on the scoop - but isn’t it better to get it right than to be first - particularly if you’re trying to take the long view. CNN and others - especially the right wing, seem to discount and ignore all the things they had long complained about with the media - missing out key details and facts.

Much of their postings are based on bogus reporting or stories so thinly sourced that they aren’t even capable of being used as fish-wrap.

So, while the posters on the site have come and gone in the going on 12 years I’ve been posting here, there has been actually one constant - and that’s Charles’ opinion and integrity on his own posts and opinions, as well as pushing out those who are clearly incapable of understanding the difference between fighting intolerance and actual terrorists and engaging in xenophobia and Islamophobia. Doesn’t get said often enough, but your post definitely is a good reminder.

I am sure that the Chechen freedom fighters were once heroes to a lot of people who see them now only as Jihadists.
And I remember Russia being quick to sign on to the War on Terror as they saw it as another handle on their own pesky ethnic troublemakers.

I am sure that the Chechen freedom fighters were once heroes to a lot of people who see them now only as Jihadists.
And I remember Russia being quick to sign on to the War on Terror as they saw it as another handle on their own pesky ethnic troublemakers.

Heck, some of the same people complaining that Obama isn’t doing enough on Syria to help take down Assad (who needs to go as the body count keeps climbing at 70k ) are complaining that the US took in refugees from Chechnya, and that 2 kids grew up and later turned out to engage in terrorism.

The Chechen wars were an object in brutality met only by the brutality wrought by the Soviets on Afghanistan. The parallels are there - and they’re striking.

Yet, nothing that the Russians or Chechens did - or are doing - excuses what the Boston duo did. And right now, all we’ve got are a whole lot of pseudobabble and inferences about jihad and what these two were doing and why. The investigation in to those aspects are only just beginning, and it will be some time before we get those kinds of details.

That one of them was captured alive may shed a whole lot of detail on their actions and motivations.

Some people will do/say anything to avoid admitting to, and owning up to, their own faults. What they fail to realize is that a hater is a hater, and no amount of praying does any good. It takes a change of the heart to change the way one looks at, and thinks about, others. Providing excuses/reasons for hating someone doesn’t stop the hating.

Who ever eats celery sticks? Raw celery is useless, it’s only good for soups, stews & stir fry.

The “diet industry” pushed the idea of raw celery as a torture instrument to punish people for being fat.

I was going to completely skip this thread since the new one’s started, but … I do. That and raw carrots. While I usually have it with a little dip, or better yet with a dry spice mix that sticks to the wet veggie, I like the snap and the cool of it especially when it’s hot out.

We just had corn on the cob, and those special dishes look great. (although it’s sometimes BONUS! when excess butter runs off into other food…)

I’d had no idea that dishes like that existed. But now I kind of want corn on the cob. Need to wait for the current load in the dishwasher to finish and to run these through though. They’ve been in the cabinet for a LONG time.
