David Corn Explains How Journalists Are Colluding With Conservatives to Create Propaganda

During an interview with 92Y Producer Jordan Chariton at The Jefferson Hotel, Corn explained his recent reporting on the conservative coalition known as Groundswell. Members of the group include prominent tea party activists and politicians as well as conservative journalists like Stephen Bannon of Breitbart News.

“Groundswell is a messaging strategy coalition, kind of hush hush, wasn’t announced really to the world that was set up by some conservatives after the Republican defeat in last year’s election,” Corn explained. “All these advocates…are sitting around hatching talking points, messaging points, strategies for beating back progressive groups, congressional Democrats, the White House, but also Karl Rove.”

Corn claimed the group helped “gin up” the Benghazi scandal. He said conservative reporters were “scheming” with activists, politicians, and legislative aides to help advance a conservative agenda.

“In this town, reporters are always talking to politicians and advocates,” he remarked. “But in the context of attending meetings and being a regular amongst a group that has been created to work on messaging — I mean, that’s the thing. In some ways, you could call it propaganda without being pejorative. In fact, they have said, ‘We’re losing the propaganda battle.’”

Corn added that conservative journalists were not simply covering the meetings to stay informed. They were actively participating in the meetings to help develop political strategies.

Journalism has always been open to being subjected to manipulation. The idea that there should be a neutral reporter of an event is kind of novel, in the big picture of society.

I think, if everyone was to make a list of things they wish to beat back, “but also Karl Rove” would be how most of them ended.

If Corn had reported Romney’s 47% comments without a video, he might have been called a loon. But here we are.

And it was Romney that ended up with 47% of the vote.

If it makes you feel any better, Romney had little chance to win even without the 47% tape coming out.

No, it doesn’t. Because I knew that and then let myself believe things were other than what I knew was true.

How interesting..My first reaction was to be pissed at Corn for evaluating the Right wing so many years ago. critical of his talking points but ignoring that the left perfected the spin years ago..For Gawd sake doesn’t anyone remember the laundry room at the Clinton’s WH? Before the evening news hit at 6pm the Clinton’s laundry staff spun it a positive light. Pure genius for crossing the bridge to the 21st Century..And guess what? Hillary has a ton of laundry to do..So I’m pissed at David Corn for being a hypocrite compared to the Dems. But I can’t do it..There is nobody on the right left to comment fairly..The GOP has become a vast wasteland of people and out-dated ideas that has no one left to lead it out of the desert..I guess that is why people like Christy and Rubio are making a turn away from the base.. They look upon it and it’s direction and see a vast wasteland..or a dust bin of old idea’s that don’t work any more for an American citizen. The path has been laid waste and most believe we must forge a new direction. So David Corn talks about GOP in-fighting these days..We should painfully listen..
And that pisses me off to no end..Corn? are you fucking kidding me? Corn is now main stream? Color me surprised..

I don’t think it was here, but today I read a story that showed that Louie GOHMERT was substituting for Sean Hannity on Hannity’s radio show.

Yes, GOHMERT — a pus-filled sack of derp Esquire magazine called one of the worst members of Congress — has a right to appear where and when he chooses, but what the heck is a U.S. Congressman hosting Hannity’s show?

Right now, I am feeling a little lonely right now. Between my “Dad” being a toxic, miserable person, and having my support system evaporate, I am feeling colder.

Right now, I am clinging to the phrase “Every lonely monster needs a companion” in hopes of a turn around, that something will cause a shift.

Four dead, two injured as gunman opens fire on town hall meeting in Pennsylvania

Police have identified the gunman as 59-year-old Rockne Warren Newell. His property had recently been seized by the county sheriff.

Newell had an 18-year-long dispute with the Ross Township Board of Supervisors over the condition of his property. Newell, a self-proclaimed junk collector, was ordered in 2012 to clean and vacate his property unless he obtained various permits.

“I need to clean up & I need a lawyer,I have no place to go and my 2 rescue dogs will be put to sleep because no one else will take them,” Newell wrote on the website Give Forward in 2012.

Newell had been living in his car and in abandoned buildings since being forced out of his home.

“They have no right to kick me off my property. They call my property an ‘eyesore.’ When I bought it, it was one of only three properties on the entire road that didn’t have what they call ‘junk,’” he told the Pocono Record in June.

23 piratedan  Mon, Aug 5, 2013 10:04:40pm

and so… as “partisan” as Corn is reputed to be, in the 47% video, he kept the name of the source secret until the source decided to out himself….. and provided the tape to others to guarantee it’s authenticity. In this reporting, he’s posting memos and who he received his information from that actually shows that yeah, there is coordination between the political operatives and media that represent the Right to “stay on message” and make sure that the Tea Party message is undiluted.

as so many of the Snowden/Greenwald faithful claim, don’t shoot the messenger, listen to the message. Except this time the messenger actually has the goods and hasn’t broken any laws and hasn’t fled the country. The scary thing is, these guys have no problems whatsoever fabricating whatever they need when they aren’t busy twisting any event to their purposes. These crazy nutjobs really have drunk the kool aid and think that this country is in mortal danger if they’re not in charge. They find it impossible that the majority of the country disagrees with them and they’re not willing to let that pass.

In short, these fuckers scare me.

Because I don’t get discouraged easily, I will say this again to you PTL: You need to reach out in REAL LIFE, not here, for help. There is support out there, but you have to find it, make it a mission. Just as passionate as your interest in Dr Who.

Your support mechanisms are failing most likely due to your anger, it alienates people. Your anger is also most likely due to the abuse from your father. You need someone to talk to about this. I can give you a big clue here too, Women do NOT feel comfortable around talk of violence and retribution, and that in turn will interfere with any possibility of relationships with them beyond the superficial.

Make some phone calls, TODAY. Start with your computer, do searches for “Autism Support Groups by State”, “Autism Mentors”, “Employment Help for People on the Autism Spectrum”, “Therapists Specializing in Autistic Patients”, etc. Do it now, don’t let another day pass. Even if a resource isn’t near you, call them anyway and ask for direction on where to go where you are.

Your dad sounds like a bully, no one deserves to live with that. Get some help so you can get the hell out of there. I worry about you sometimes. Please get help, with it, you can do great things with your life and show your dad he’s wrong about you. Without it, you are only going to become more and more angry and depressed which is not going to lead you anywhere but Awful.

re: #33 Vicious Babushka

A special sort of racist.

There really does seem to exist a fear in some people that blacks are going to one day wreak their revenge and start lynching white people. These videos Drudge puts up about these attacks by blacks, to me, that’s just a projected fear that black people are really fucking angry and how badly they’ve been treated.

The reason why this is such a special sort of racism is it’s actually kind of close to empathy. It’s acknowledging, in a way, that black people are angry about mistreatment. But this kind of racist posits that anger as misplaced, at something that blacks should just get over because racism has been solved and they’re the new racists now. It’s a white person absolving them of white guilt because slavery happened in the past.

I don’t like collective responsibility at all. If we were in an equitable society, I wouldn’t feel at all bad about being ‘white’ (or at least identified as white by most of the population, thought a lot of them my Jew-ness outweighs my white-ness), but we’re not. Because I speak with an educated white accent, because I look and dress mainstream ‘white’, because my name is ‘white’ sounding, I’ve benefited from all sorts of invisible privilege. Nobody’s ever tossed my resume for having a black-sounding name. Nobody’s ever asked if I was an affirmative action choice —-which is fucking bizarre, because being a white person is like being on affirmative action all the time. You’re always the first choice.

So I think that I, as a member of a privileged group, have the responsibility to help tear down that privilege. And I’d rather put it in those terms rather than say paternalistically white people should ‘help’, blacks. White people should stop preferentially helping other white people, and fix the structures in our society that do that automatically.

But then fucks like this can’t take a minute to think about shit like that. Instead they let that fear of the black man bubble up in them and just act like scared little whiny idiots.

I have a gender-neutral name. I once had a job interview (this was in the early ‘90’s) in a room full of men. As I entered the conference room, one of the interviewers blurted out “We were expecting a man!”

I did not get that job, but what a weird experience that was. I think they actually expected me to apologize for “tricking” them or something.

You always think of snappy comebacks long after the opportunity has passed.

I don’t even remember what company this was at. I had just been laid off from GM (this was the year they just dumped a whole bunch of people, including the CEO) and the interviewers figured that someone with automotive engineering experience just had to be a dude. JUST HAD TO BE.

I saw this last week, holy crap. I’m not even sure how you begin to unpack that amount of awful. What always astounds me about this fear that black people are going to seek revenge for the things done to them is how it rarely if ever seems to inspire people to think it might be a bad idea to be a racist asshole. If I was that scared of this kind of thing it would inspire me to do better in my day to day dealings with people and not be a jerk. But then again, I’m not a racist asshole.

They find it impossible that the majority of the country disagrees with them and they’re not willing to let that pass.

According to a commenter on a conservative site, Obama only won the recent election because of “MASSIVE VOTER FRAUD” (caps were theirs….) by ACORN. With the assistance of Congress (voting to defund ACORN 8 times over the last few years) many conservatives still think ACORN exists and corrupts electoral outcomes. After all, they just KNOW that Obama did not actually get the support of the majority of legitimate voters.

June U.S. trade deficit sinks 22% to $34.2 billion

marketwatch.com

“The U.S. trade deficit shrank in June by 22.4% to $34.2 billion to mark the smallest gap since fall 2009, a decline likely to give a boost to the nation’s 1.7% growth figure for the second quarter when it’s revised at the end of the month. A smaller deficit is a positive for gross domestic product. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had forecast the deficit to fall to $43 billion.”

So there was a discussion over Ars Technica about how climate change hews along political lines. I posted the following, in answer to a guy who wanted to know how the article explained why people watch Fox News.

Original question:

So how does this explain Fox News? (And, as I’m hearing these days, CNN.)

(I know this is gonna get marked troll but I just had to.)

My response:

Actually, Fox News is easy to explain. There’s fricking shitloads of money to be made by catering to the basest, most antediluvian instincts of American conservatives.

Insisting that climate change is not real, is a liberal plot, etc. is one of those instincts.

They torched the original comment and marked my response as trolling, yet left the original quote visible for all to see. And the corker is that my comment has gotten a positive response, yet it’s still considered trolling.

I forget who I was talking to here, but they said they’re pretty much washing their hands of Ars. I really see why now. Ars commenters really get Magic Balance Fairy with political stuff at times, and the mods tend to reinforce that.

Somehow, that struck me as so wrong; I just couldn’t wrap my head around it.

As a woman, I’m a total failure as a man, and believe me, raising 2 kids by myself after a divorce at a young age required me to try being a father, mother and breadwinner to them (all roles their father relinquished). I forget who I was talking to here, but they said they’re pretty much washing their hands of Ars. I really see why now. Ars commenters really get Magic Balance Fairy with political stuff at times, and the mods tend to reinforce that.

Well, I’m sure you saw Edward Snowden’s old stuff there, and everyone tended to agree with him—and egged him on.

Esp that old people should die BS about SS which is nothing but the arrogance and ignorance of youthful libertarianism—he should live so long in his new-found home.

You can interpret that in gender-neutral terms as “the adult”

Maybe. If we actually have gender-neutral attitudes, which most don’t. We hashed all that stuff out in the old days of feminism. Even 40 years later, the head of an entity is mostly called “chairman” or “chairwoman” which is gender identified. Why not just “chair”, for instance? Or even “chairperson”?

People hate changing language as much as they hate changing the conditions which give birth to that language.

88 lawhawk  Tue, Aug 6, 2013 7:01:26am

That President Bush was able to get this particular personal health issue resolved is great. Even better would be that every American would have the ability to have access to the same kind of care - preventative care and testing that can forestall more serious outcomes down the road.

Sadly, the GOP wants to keep that from ever happening, and is fighting implementation of the PPACA at every step of the way, up to and including 40+ attempts at repealing all or part of the PPACA, despite obvious benefits already occurring for many Americans (no lifetime caps, coverage for dependents through age 26).

PPACA may not be perfect, but it’s a massive improvement over the current system, where hospitals are bankrupting themselves over covering costs for uninsureds. In NYC alone, there are two hospitals circling the drain (LICH and Interfaith), because of those kinds of costs, and that’s despite LICH being a teaching hospital and one that was well regarded in Consumer Reports’ latest health care outcomes guide.

Still, the GOP is claiming that PPACA will jack up insurance costs, but that ignores a few crucial details. They’re busy comparing apples to oranges - minimal plans allowed by the selected states before PPACA, and the comprehensive plans expected to be offered; putting that selection up, ignoring the credit/incentives that will offset the higher costs to most folks eligible for the PPACA exchanges; and that states where there were already comprehensive plans comparable to PPACA, the costs for the PPACA plans are coming in lower than expected.

Fear and loathing is all the GOP has on the PPACA plans.

Because if the GOP can’t kill the PPACA in its cradle, they know that they wont be able to do so once the benefits begin rolling in to millions of Americans who have foregone insurance until now.

Just remember that Greenwald-Jones-Beck would have you believe that the security alerts are trumped up.

These kinds of closures and evacuations are not without substantial cost and effort. They’d have people believe that the Obama administration is making up stuff about the alerts, that AQ is threatening attacks, and that the Administration is playing games even as AQ is resurgent in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan with a surge in civilian casualties and prison breakouts swelling their ranks.

Honestly, the stuff at Ars Technica is generally top notch. They’re well written and usually well researched. It’s the comments sections that have been lately going off the rails, primarily to the Greenwald-created paranoia over Snowden and the NSA.

I’m loathe to stop reading it because of that. Quite frankly, the Snowden worship seems to be prevalent across much of the tech journalism I read and listen to. I may not agree with it, but if I stopped listening or reading a source when I disagreed with it, I’d literally be reading my cereal boxes.

I mean, another conservative here last night yet again defended George Zimmerman as the poor defenseless victim. I think that’s fucking idiotic, but I’m not taking LGF off my reading list.

Greenwald and Jones have each asserted that the government has engaged in a worldwide shut down of 25 U.S. embassies and consulates in order to artificially forge a shiny object designed to herd us away from embarrassing, damning topics. But I would argue Greenwald’s claim is more off-the-rails that Jones’ video due to the fact that Greenwald looped the consequences of his own reporting into the theory, suggesting that the government was targeting his efforts personally; that the government decided to rub Glenn Greenwald’s nose in shit and they’ve done so by staging a fake terrorism alert shouted from the mountaintops while also initiating the closure of two dozen embassies. Remarkable and pathetic.

I’m getting really excited about RightOnline and the Defending the American Dream Summit in August. If you don’t already have your ticket, you need to act fast! These events have become two of the best free market conferences all year, and you need to be there!

In case you hadn’t noticed, the far left is organized, motivated, and relentless. In order to stem the tsunami of big government threatening our nation, we have to be better informed and united in the cause of liberty. These two conferences are all about getting liberty lovers, like us, together so we can learn to make a big impact in the fight for economic freedom.

With Obama’s gang of clowns in power for three and a half more years we have got to be vigilant in defending our country’s core principles. Whether it’s the health care takeover, global warming ideology, or wasteful government spending, we’ve got to be armed with the facts to combat the liberal spin machine every chance we get. This conference is the place to get all the info we need to make an impact.

Also, if you register this week you’ll get a chance to join a private meet-and-greet with me!

Don’t sit this one out…the stakes are just too high. If we don’t defend the American dream, who will? Sign up for the Defending the American Dream Summit and RightOnline today.

See you there!

There have been reports that a government inquiry prompted us not to serve WikiLeaks any longer. That is inaccurate.

There have also been reports that it was prompted by massive DDOS attacks. That too is inaccurate. There were indeed large-scale DDOS attacks, but they were successfully defended against.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) rents computer infrastructure on a self-service basis. AWS does not pre-screen its customers, but it does have terms of service that must be followed. WikiLeaks was not following them. There were several parts they were violating. For example, our terms of service state that “you represent and warrant that you own or otherwise control all of the rights to the content… that use of the content you supply does not violate this policy and will not cause injury to any person or entity.” It’s clear that WikiLeaks doesn’t own or otherwise control all the rights to this classified content. Further, it is not credible that the extraordinary volume of 250,000 classified documents that WikiLeaks is publishing could have been carefully redacted in such a way as to ensure that they weren’t putting innocent people in jeopardy. Human rights organizations have in fact written to WikiLeaks asking them to exercise caution and not release the names or identities of human rights defenders who might be persecuted by their governments.

We’ve been running AWS for over four years and have hundreds of thousands of customers storing all kinds of data on AWS. Some of this data is controversial, and that’s perfectly fine. But, when companies or people go about securing and storing large quantities of data that isn’t rightfully theirs, and publishing this data without ensuring it won’t injure others, it’s a violation of our terms of service, and folks need to go operate elsewhere.

We look forward to continuing to serve our AWS customers and are excited about several new things we have coming your way in the next few months.

I wish my meme-making skills were better, because I’d start the meme -as trolling, naturally - that because wherever a Muslim prays automatically becomes a mosque, something that a lot of the wingnuts believe, and because she was in outer space when she did her prayers, that means the all of outer space has now become a mosque and that Islam is now the official religion of the known universe. Usually under the international rules of war, wearing the enemy’s uniform strips one of any protections under the Geneva Conventions and allows one to be prosecuted as a spy under the laws of the country they’re caught by.

I don’t know that specifically. What I do know is that Hoover pre-dates movement conservatism, and as a result is more respectable than most RW think tanks (e.g., they actually have a library where original source materials are preserved etc.).

That doesn’t stop their ideas from being awful, of course, like that tax nonsense you linked to.

Alex Rodriguez is a raging egomaniac whose life is not in danger (except for persistent use of PEDs). His livelihood is threatened, not because of Bud Selig or mysterious conspiracies involving the Yankees, Bud, and unknown other forces, but because Alex thinks that he can beat the rap and that his is the only case that MLB trumped up when 12 others took the 50 game suspensions (and several apologized publicly for their acts) without appealing.

Ultimately, whenever he ends up retiring and gains eligiblity to the HoF, it’s the writers who will weigh his merits for entry in the Hall. They once thought him a sure-fire 1st ballot HoFer. Now, he joins the steroid enhanced ranks who have lied, obfuscated, and otherwise cheated to get ahead.

I doubt he’ll get in now - despite his statistics - because he simply refuses to acknowledge that it was his own actions that led him to this place.

He is also getting the bigger punishment due to his use, lying about, and then admitting 2001-03 PED use in 2007. So he obviously make a fake apology then since he just simply change the PED of choice and continued doing so.

And he’ll appeal, play and collect pay in the mean time since a year plus suspension will probably end his career anyways other than perhaps a short swan-song tour if someone wants to pay him in order to boost attendance for a short period.

(He also gave a press conference yesterday wearing a Yankee’s hat. I wonder how the team ownership and management loved that.)

NYC sports radio has been banging the drum for weeks that he’s somewhere between your #2 and #3 - with the exception of WFAN’s Mike Francesa, who scored an exclusive interview with Rodriguez last week, serving up more soft pitches than A-Rod has probably seen since grade school.

I gave up listening three days before the actual suspension, because sports radio got into a closed loop of what-ifs. Sports radio here has been a complete waste of time for the past 3 weeks.

If she says no, I have to accept that as an answer and I have no right to blame her. Not to mention the vast majority of sexual assaults happen to women who are completely sober.

Kessler is beyond “wingnut”; he’s flat-out deranged, with armed followers, and is most likely not mentally fit to perform his duties as a law enforcement officer. He should be removed from office, quite frankly.

Unfortunately, such a scenario would likely entail a stand-off with his cultish acolytes, and would also most likely end in violence.

And why Obama’s removed all opposition parties. Oh wait he hasn’t done that either. I just did a quick search on Gilberton, mainly because we’re looking at some places in the Poconos for vacation, and I don’t want us to be anywhere near this lunatic when the shooting starts.

Huff Po is making the claim that essentially the town is like Charming, CA, the fictional locale for the Sons of Anarchy drama on FX.

I hope to God that’s not true, but I’m getting a bit concerned that indeed another Ruby Ridge is in the offing. Given the Tea Bagging of the GOP, I’m also worried that Republicans like Governor Corbett on down will just sit on their hands until it’s too late.

Funny how the NRA is keeping out of this.

That the Republicans, or indeed, any officials will ignore this until it’s too late is a legitimate concern; it’s made all the worse by the fact that Kessler has followers in the form of his militia. I’m sure there’s nothing these folks would like more than some kind of standoff with the state or federal authorities. As I said, such a scenario would no doubt end in a good deal of violence.

Legends of the gun culture:
David Marshall Williams invented the short stroke piston action for firearms while he was serving time in prison for the second degree murder of a deputy sheriff. The invention was used in the M-1 carbine, the most widely produced American firearm of World War 2. Williams, who was released after serving 8 years, went on to patent more than 50 inventions, including .22 rimfire adapters for machine guns, a non-sagging clotheline, a can opener that used some of his firearms ideas and, of course, a better mousetrap. He was portrayed by Jimmy Stewart in the 1952 biopic Carbine Williams.

New GOP Same As the Old GOP: Iowa Summit to Feature Republican Leaders and Religious Right Stalwarts

The upcoming Family Leadership Summit comes on the heels of last month’s Iowa Pastors and Pews meeting, which hosted Sen. Rand Paul, Sen. Ted Cruz and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.

This weekend’s conference, hosted by the Religious Right group The Family Leader, will feature Cruz, former Sen. Rick Santorum and perennial presidential candidate-vacillator Donald Trump.

Bob Vander Plaats of The Family Leader, a former Republican gubernatorial candidate who spearheaded the 2010 campaign to boot pro-marriage equality justices off the Iowa Supreme Court, is hosting the event. The Family Leader continues its push to become a conservative power player: Last year, the organization hosted a debate attended by every Republican presidential candidate save Mitt Romney and tried to get candidates to pledge to fight legal pornography and to agree that African-American families were better off under slavery. In 2016, the group might take over the reins of the Iowa Straw Poll.

Yes, that is a scary concept.

The only more terrifying was when Hollywood got the idea to remake “Akira” as a live-action film. Thankfully, it was shut down - for the fourth time - as of January 6, 2012. And hopefully, it’ll stay shut down.

Personally, I think it would be almost cost-prohibitive to make it as a live-action film.

Same here. I also recall when the first dubbed version of the film hit the US market; then a subtitled version hit a few years later. I found there was a major difference between the two - the subtitled version was far superior, and the story made better sense.

It’s like when Hollywood redid “Ringu” and “Ju-on”. I guess I can understand it in that they want to make it appeal as widely as possible, and both of those films, while on the one hand being fairly universal ghost stories, contain elements that are unique to Japanese culture and folklore.
