NYT Editorial Says Snowden Shouldn’t Get Asylum in Russia, Glenn Greenwald Freaks Right Out

“Putin is a repressive and arrogant leader who treats his people with contempt”
World • Views: 23,472

As you can see above, Glenn Greenwald has been repetitively freaking out about this New York Times editorial all day, as if he were expecting something very different: What’s the Point of a Summit?

Most of the debate about whether Mr. Obama should attend has centered on Mr. Snowden, who fled to Russia after his disclosures. The administration wanted him returned to the United States to face charges of leaking national security secrets.

Russia’s decision was provocative. Asylum is for people who are afraid to return to their own country because they fear persecution, unlawful imprisonment or even death because of their race, their ethnicity, their religion, their membership in particular social or political groups, or their political beliefs.

Mr. Snowden undoubtedly fears returning home because he would be arrested and prosecuted. But those fears do not qualify him for asylum. And does he really feel safer in a country where Mr. Putin, an increasingly authoritarian leader, has jailed and persecuted his critics?

The bigger problem is that the partnership that Mr. Obama sought to build with Russia is seriously broken. Ever since Mr. Putin reclaimed the presidency in 2012, he has been profoundly at odds with the administration over the Syrian civil war, missile defense issues and further reductions in nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Mr. Putin is a repressive and arrogant leader who treats his people with contempt, as the recent crackdown on gays and lesbians demonstrates.

Greenwald is extremely quick to nitpick when someone criticizes him; he insists on being quoted verbatim, so he can waffle, and pretend to avoid responsibility, and change meanings after the fact.

But here he is, ranting over and over that the New York Times is “demanding the extradition” of Edward Snowden, when that’s simply not what the editorial says. At all. The strongest statement the NYT’s editors make is that Snowden’s fears of prosecution “do not qualify him for asylum.”

There are no demands for extradition in this piece.

I wonder what GG will do when the whole Snowden thing inevitably becomes stale and shuffles off into a corner.

My guess is that Dancing With The Stars may be in his future. Look what it did for Nancy Grace!

A pathetic editorial - like the Obama war on whistleblowers - which they’ve condemned - doesn’t exist.

This kinda looks like English, but it doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense.

Exactly. It’s vague:

I think the government’s strategy of keeping all these foiled attacks on the down-low so as to prevent widespread fear and panic may have come around to bite them on this one. No good deed goes unpunished, and all that jazz.

14 HappyWarrior  Wed, Aug 7, 2013 5:22:51pm

I still think many Americans- left, right, libertarian, etc don’t understand why national security apparatuses exist. They think- who is the government to suspect me, I’m an American! And fair enough, I understand that frustration but to act like the government shouldn’t focus on American citizens or residents as possible potential terrorists is silly. Timothy McVeigh wasn’t some foreigner. He was American born and raised. A decorated military man. Do I want the officials to follow the law, of course I do but unlike GG and Snowden, I am not going to get all puffy about law that has been followed and then chummy up to some real authoritarians like Putin just because they serve my purpose. If Snowden actually was sincere about his beliefs in civil liberties and privacy, he wouldn’t have taken asylum in Russia. He’s an opportunist.

How dare the NYT take the air out of Greenwald’s puffery? How dare they!?

Better yet, how dare the NYT question Greenwald’s logic, reasoning, and patriotism of Snowden?

Yet, even Greenwald goofed when he likened Snowden to a bunch of criminals that the US has refused extradition for.

Let’s just ignore that the countries seeking those extraditions are notable for: 1) incomplete, error-filled extradition applications; 2) records of torture and the individuals involved would likely not receive due process under the law; and 3) Greenwald has no problem drawing the comparison.

It indicates that Greenwald knows that Snowden committed crimes but ignores any of the reasons to deny extradition.

Like I said this morning, all three examples Glenn gives are men who, if they were “whistleblowers” on the US gov’t, he’d be fighting vehemently to avoid seeing them extradited. The first was tried and sentenced in absentia and so fled to the US to avoid the consequences of a trial where he never got to present a defense, the second is being accused of crimes against humanity for actions the new president was responsible for, and the third could only be deported to countries where he stands a very serious risk of being tortured.

The asylum decision gives Russia cover to depict itself as a defender of human rights, pointing a finger to deflect criticism of its own poor record on rights including free speech. But the secrecy that surrounded Snowden’s time at the Moscow airport and his unwillingness so far to talk to the press indicates he is being controlled by Russian intelligence, Andrei Soldatov, a Russian journalist who co-authored a book on the Russian intelligence services said.

“Does he have independent sources of information and communication? My impression is that he has none, which means he’s not his own master,” Soldatov said.

He said Kucherena’s statements about concerns for Snowden’s safety do not hold water.

“We are all perfectly aware that Snowden, who has just received asylum, does not face any danger in Russia,” Soldatov said. “American intelligence does not kidnap or assassinate people in Russia, that’s a fact. This is a just a pretext.”

I can think of two people. One is in Rio. The other is in an undisclosed location in Russia.

I’m actually pretty far to the left myself — I practically lean that way when I walk — but I have to shake my head at the Israel haters or the folks who think that the U.S. is the worst of the worst.

Then I read the latest drivel by Fischer, Coulter, Erickson, GOHMERT and the rest of the nutburger patrol, and I feel a little better.

Well, take and draw a line. Put left on the left, center in the middle and right on the right. Now extended the line the same length as you started with out to both the left and the right. Those now represent the wingnuts to the far right and the moonbats to the far left. Notice how those that are traditional left and right are now in the center.

The further out the left and right travel in craziness, the distance between classic democrat and classic republican will be small.

I think we are getting there. Next round of elections should tell. That is if the middle isn’t so disheartened by the crazy.

And regarding Glenn Greenwald. When has he ever needed facts to get his point across? It’s all been hints of how bad it all coulda would it should it be.

I’ll say it again. He is not a journalist any longer if he ever was. He is at best an op-ed commentator that writes his own script.

And then there’s the timing of events from the moment he entered Russia. Yeah, I know I’m sounding a bit CT about this, but consider that Snowden turned down Putin’s public offer of asylum for silence and his chosen mouthpiece said that he hadn’t applied for asylum in Russia. Days go by and the majority of the nations he could make a commercial non-stop flight to either refuse his applications or say he can only apply if on their soil, while the two that say yes (Bolivia and Venezuela) require connecting flights and pass close to US airspace. Putin makes another offer, this time without the whole “keep quiet” proviso and Snowden submits an application that’s quickly accepted and he’s ushered out of the terminal without press present to a refugee center 17 hours away, all while his Russian lawyer tells folks he’s perfectly fine and happy.

Again, I know it sounds crazy, but sometimes in the spy game crazy works.

And Glen.. Haven’t seen you booking a trip to Moscow to back your brother yet..What’s the matter? You’re boyfriend doesn’t want to go? Maybe a bit awkward?

Indeed, when was the last time that Eddie got in front of the cameras, any camera, since he disappeared into that terminal? Everything since has been either through Wikileaks or through his Russian lawyer, both of whom have every reason to keep his mouth shut about his treatment in Russia.

Snowden either hasn’t realized or has resigned himself to the realization that he’s already effectively a prisoner. The Russians aren’t going to let him go seek asylum elsewhere and any attempt to rock the boat may tempt them to just go ahead and fork him over to us. And no telling whether or not Wikileaks is a willing participant in his incarceration, though considering they’re not making any noise over his treatment so far, my guess is they are.

Personally, I’m okay with the possibility of Snowden spending the next twenty or thirty years stuck in Russia with limited means and zero ability to travel.

As am I, but I’m engaging in a bit of schadenfreude here. He walked right into the lion’s cage, wrapped in meat, but absolutely convinced that there would be somebody there to pull him out if he were in danger.

Food at Club Fed is probably better than that awesome Russian cuisine we hear so much about.
