Reid: Senate GOPer Approached Me With A Deal On Filibuster
“Last night I got a call from one of my Republican friends saying, Harry, we’ve got a deal for you,” he said at a Capitol Hill press conference. “I’m anxious to listen. What is this — we’ll give you one of the D.C. Circuit [Court nominee], that way it will be 5-4.
“I just can’t imagine — and one of my friends, he’s a friend, anyway, we’ve been in the House together, Senate together, a long type, what would you do? What would you do, I said?” he added. “And he, just the two of us, he didn’t want to, he said I’m not answering that question. Everyone knows that what has gone on is absolutely unfair and wrong and I’m glad we changed it. It’s a day of freshness for this great country of ours.”

re: #20 Shiplord Kirel
That rebranding effort is going swimmingly well.
The Party of No tries to rebrand by sweeping under the rug that they’re still saying no to the safety net, whether it’s the access to affordable health insurance (NO!), Medicaid (NO!), or Medicare (NO!).
That’s even though we’re spending more on health care than other OECD countries and getting worse outcomes (lower life expectancies, higher costs, and fewer people covered by insurance).
The kicker is that the GOP, which is busy bitching about the rejiggering of 5% of the insurance marketplace (the percentage that relies on individual marketplace), would rather turn the Medicare/Medicaid portion into the same kind of means-tested and mess that they are busy complaining about with the ACA. Their ultimate goal is to roll back the Medicare/Medicaid system and leave people to their own devices with HSAs, leaving them SOL if they run into serious medical issues.

Seems Harry finally found his spine:
Reid: If McConnell Wants To Kill The Filibuster, ‘Let Him Do It’
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) brushed off Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) threats earlier this year to eliminate the filibuster entirely if and when he comes to power, should Democrats invoke the nuclear option.
“Let him do it,” Reid told reporters in response to a question from TPM at a press conference after Democrats took the historic step Thursday to end filibusters for executive and non-Supreme Court judicial nominees.
Earlier in June, the when Democrats threatened to go nuclear (but never pulled the trigger), McConnell warned that if this majority weakens the filibuster for nominees, his Republican majority would end it for legislation.
“There is not a doubt in my mind that if the majority breaks the rules of the Senate to change the rules of the Senate with regard to nominations, the next majority will do it for everything. … I wouldn’t be able to argue, a year and a half from now if I were the majority leader, to my colleagues that we shouldn’t enact our legislative agenda with a simple 51 votes, having seen what the previous majority just did. I mean there would be no rational basis for that.”
Reid was asked if he was worried about a future GOP majority ending the filibuster for legislation or Supreme Court nominees, as Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) threatened on Thursday.
“Let them do it,” Reid said. “Why in the world would we care?”
McConnell mourned the demise of the filibuster on Thursday. He wouldn’t reiterate his threats to retalite after Democrats changed the rules, saying only that he looks forward to the mid-term elections.
“I think it’s a day to be sad,” he said. “We look forward to having a great election in 2014.”

Normally, when you choose a drastic option, you wonder how your opponent will respond. In this case, I don’t think the Democrats have anything to worry about, because the Republicans have ALREADY gone nuclear. How else would you describe almost breaching the debt ceiling? Even now, it’s possible that there may be another government shutdown / debt ceiling dance in January and February.
So this is one case when the Democrats can “escalate” without fear of “reprisal”. The Republicans are ALREADY reprising as much as they can!

In this case, I don’t think the Democrats have anything to worry about, because the Republicans have ALREADY gone nuclear. How else would you describe almost breaching the debt ceiling? Because he’s Old School. Guys a bajillionty years old. I’ve met him a few times (Point of Light things for Boy Scouts) and he was always fairly reasonable but he’s committed to some old ideas about being able to trust human decency.

Reid’s shown infinite fucking patience for GOP shenanigans, time and again working “deals” that fell through as soon as the GOP decided that it was politically advantageous to return to their old ways. Just the start of this year, we had another deal meant to allow votes on nominees that Reid worked on the grounds that support for the nuclear option was “wavering.” All he ever got for those deals was a handful of votes on nominees and the undying ire of his own party’s base.
Let today be a sign of things to come.

Beaver saves doe from certain death by stealing hunter’s gun
Nathan Baron was relaxing over the weekend, sitting in a chair in the woods and tracking a doe with his Remington rifle when, suddenly, nature called. The Maine high school student left the gun resting against the chair, ran back home to do his business, and arrived just in time to see something he didn’t expect to see: a beaver stealing the rifle. “There was a stream … about 100 feet away from me,” he told Bangor Daily News. “I look and there’s a beaver hauling that gun into the water. There was nothing I could do … the beaver went under. That was it.”

The filibuster is a tyranny of the minority in action. A minority of the Chamber (the Senate) can prevent action by the majority. A filibuster could have its place in a Senate that worked and actually adhered to the notion that advise and consent means…. well… advise and consent … instead of thwart and prevent.
Judicial nominees and nominees in general are being blocked by this reactionary GOP because they hate the President and are doing everything in their power to prevent his policy agenda from moving forward. They also know the power that judicial nominees hold and that over time they can sway national discourse (like say on gay marriage, abortion, and other hot button subjects).
Keeping vacancies open undermines judicial administration and means that cases aren’t being addressed in a timely manner. Add the administration positions that the Senate has been refusing to fill because of the filibuster, and you’ve got the GOP party of no by any means possible.
This vote takes away the “filibuster” on certain nominees and certain other specific types of actions. If the GOP still doesn’t like a particular nominee, they can still vote NO, but we’d see just how they stack up and that it’s all partisan hackery on their part.
That isn’t to say that the GOP can’t benefit from this either - as in some time in the dystopian future when the GOP regains control over the Senate but not with a 60+ majority, they could move their nominees through despite opposition from the Democrats.
It works both ways, and in a normally functioning political environment, comity of this sort would rule the day.
But this isn’t a normally functioning political environment. The GOP is engaged in an all-out assault on this President and his agenda by any means necessary, and is poisoning the discourse going forward.

I have to disagree in that I do think the filibuster has a place in functional government, but not as we understand it today. We’ve had generations of Americans growing up to Mr Smith Goes To Washington and assuming when the media talks about a filibuster, that’s what’s going on. But today’s filibusters are nothing like they were in the days of yore, as the “two-track system” of allowing the Senate go forward with other business while a bill is filibustered, and then the rule change to dispense with the “standing filibuster” in exchange for a motion to do so being treated as such, has rendered the filibuster just another legislative tool that is susceptible to abuse.

Exactly, it was meant to allow dissenting Senators the opportunity to make their opinion heard, if not the possibility of swaying wavering votes against the bill. Instead, it’s just become something that the minority party increasingly abuses in the hopes that the next major election will sweep them back into the majority…only to find their own hands tied.
