Wait, that wasn’t a promo for The Voice? /
Amazing America? How about this for amazing. Just a few months after some dumbasses who were formerly with the Boy Scouts decided to knock over a famous balancing rock formation in Goblin Valley State Park (and were rightfully charged with the crime), someone decided to steal a 190 million year old dinosaur track fossil that was on one of the most famous trails in Moab, Utah. The thieves pried the fossil out of the ground.
These kinds of thefts and vandalism occur all the time at state and national parks across the country. Sometimes, the person involved is caught. But most of the time, no one is caught and we’re all poorer for the defacement and destruction.

Oh, look at the company that is going to run Palin’s show:
InterMedia Advisors, LLC, also known as InterMedia Advisors is a private equity investment firm focused on leveraged buyout and growth capital investments in the media sector.
The firm, which was founded in 2005 by notable private equity investor Leo Hindery, is based on the 48th floor of the Chrysler Building in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.
Among the firm’s most notable investments are Thomas Nelson, Universal Sports, Control Room, Aspire, BlackBook Media, @Home Network, InterMedia Outdoors, Sportsman Channel, Cinelatino, Soul Train Holdings,Vibe Lifestyle Network, UP, and Puerto Rican station WAPA-TV.
Tom Daschle
In 2005, Tom Daschle joined the firm as a senior adviser. It was during his time at InterMedia that Daschle reportedly had the use of a limousine and chauffeur that he did not report in his income taxes.

Just 5 short years ago, many on the right were calling Palin the “future of the Republican Party.” That was after she and McCain lost, but when her star was still shining bright and she was being touted by conservative “intellectuals” from Rush Limbaugh to William Kristol as the savior of the GOP.
Now she’s the future of the Sportsman Channel. You might ask, “What the hell is that? Never heard of it.” Well, its website spells things out pretty clearly. They have 4 types of programs (and I’m quoting directly from their site):
1) hunting shows
2) fishing shows
3) hunting AND fishing shows
4) shooting shows
Glad to see Sarah has found a new niche, one that most of America can easily avoid. And I’m especially glad that it involves her being no closer to the levers of political power than holding a gun and a fishing rod.

OTOH, a great number of people who give lip service to concern about some of these really-big-picture issues are not really able to come to terms with why doing anything, that will have a major effect, is probably beyond their control, unless they are willing to do something much more radical then they have previously considered.

The Art Inspired by Ukraine’s Euromaidan
Amid the rubble and smoke-filled streets of Kiev, Ukraine’s artists have been hard at work, endeavoring to capture this dramatic moment in their country’s history. Rather than staying in the studio, artists have brought their easels, paintbrushes, and canvases to the streets and even onto the barricades. Many of them protesters themselves, they have also decorated their helmets and shields. Here is a selection of their work.

OT, but sheesh. WTF? I see this, so I go to look at the article because it’s not the sort of thing the Smithsonian usually tweets:
A group of imams in the UAE have issued a fatwa prohibiting muslims from going to Mars http://t.co/iyIINymvpZ— Smithsonian Magazine (@SmithsonianMag) February 22, 2014
WTF 1.) Who? I’d never even heard of the GAIAE until I read the article. It doesn’t speak for all 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide—something which isn’t clear from the article—it’s more along the lines of “Oh, look at the silly shit those backwards Muslims are saying (again).”
WTF 2.) Why are they even issuing this kind of fatwa? I mean, seriously? The UAE, home to some of the most ostentatious displays of wealth in the Muslim world? How about some fatwas telling those rich Muslims who can afford this vanity trip that they and the rest of the world would be better served if they instead used their money to benefit the poor? How about some fatwas about the dangers of of materialism & ostentation versus the rewards of humility & giving extra charity?
WTF 3.) Why is the Smithsonian tweeting this type of click-bait crap? Are they headed down the same road as the Discovery and History channels?
WTF 4.) I guess the entire project is bullshit science-as-reality-tv anway:
Over 200,000 people from around the world applied to be part of Mars One. The project is a private venture that hopes to eventually establish a human outpost on the red planet. The one catch: the people sent to the red planet don’t have a way back. Even in the best-case scenario, the people who volunteer will have no way to back out or go home. The thousands of people who have signed up seem ok with that risk, for the sake of exploration.
Mars One has already started the selection process for astronauts, with plans to turn both the selection process and mission into a “media spectacle” with a reality show. Think Big Brother…in space. The company responded to reports of the fatwa with a statement:
[…]
Mars One respectfully requests GAIAE to cancel the Fatwa and make the greatest Rihla, or journey, of all times open for Muslims too. They can be the first Muslims to witness the signs of God’s creation in heaven, drawing upon the rich culture of travel and exploration of early Islam.
Really? They can be the “first Muslims to witness the signs of God’s creation in heaven”? Yeah, okay, I guess this isn’t about science, huh? Or maybe they think they’re talking (down) to addle-brained children?
I just… excuse me while I go find a barf bag. Sorry for the long, OT ranty comment—I probably should’ve just made it a Page, but… *sigh*
Y’know, I loved the internet a couple of hours ago after my Wikiwalk, but now I hate it again. //

The cameraman is one brave SOB.
I find it really irritating when people criticize photojournalists for taking pictures in the middle of a crisis. “Oh, you stood there with a camera while _____ was going on and you didn’t bother to help,” etc. A well-known example is Kevin Carter, who received as much harsh criticism as glowing acclaim for this picture.
Leaving aside the fact that a photograph depicts something that was happening for about 1/500th of a second, I think photography (both video and still) is every bit as important for comprehending the news as is text. One can listen to a news anchor drone on about “150 people killed” without being fazed, but a photo of ruined corpses stacked like firewood tends to get your attention.

Speaking of Putin, NPR tweeted this around midnight. I don’t know how accurate it is since the guy they’re quoting is from the AEI, but it was interesting:
The World According To Vladimir Putin
The worldview of Russian President Vladimir Putin could be summed up along these lines:
Moscow’s precipitous decline in global influence since the Soviet breakup must be reversed. Russia must be respected as the dominant power in former Soviet republics like Ukraine. Russia is entitled to a strong voice in the Middle East based on longstanding ties to Syria and other Arab states. In the rest of the world, Russia will be a counterweight to the U.S. and the West, which meddles in far too many places.
These positions have put Putin in conflict with the U.S. in more global hot spots than any other world leader. He revels in this role, and President Obama’s attempt to reset relations with Russia appears to have been for naught.
“Putin sees influence as a zero-sum game. If Russia has influence, then the U.S. doesn’t,” said Michael Rubin of the American Enterprise Institute and author of a new book, Dancing with the Devil: The Perils of Engaging Rogue Regimes.
“Putin is not going to make any of the value judgments that Americans often make,” he added. “The United States sees its allies as partners, but Putin and many Russians see partners as client states.”
Putin has gone to battle with the West on multiple fronts, and here’s a scorecard on the status of those showdowns. […]

American’s have always been very able to do that. They haven’t been pushed to where they want to in a very long time. But what Sam Houston said about the North at the start of the Civil War is applicable to all America these days: “But when they begin to move in a given direction, they move with the steady momentum and perseverance of a mighty avalanche.”
These days it’s been a pretty peaceful avalanche. But historically it hasn’t always been so peaceful and no one knows what tomorrow will bring.

You can see the incident from a different angle at #111. There’s another large barrier in front of the tree so the medic, who just showed up, doesn’t know what they guys with the shields know. Incoming fire was probably from the upper floors of one of the large buildings down the street. Medic probably assumed ground level fire.

Well, yes and no. The situation in Ukraine is very different and most people realize that on some level. It seems most protesters believe they’re part of a movement that’s going to sweep the country and topple the establishment. It’s mostly a fantasy and they realize. There are very few people who think their actions are going to spark a wider revolution. We saw that with the OWS protesters who tried to blow up that bridge. Or the ones in Chicago who wanted to burn some pigs and firebomb Obama’s campaign office. Or the Glenn Beck fan who was caught on his way to shoot up Tides Foundation offices. Or the Gay rights guy who wanted to kill conservative Christians in DC with Chick fil A sandwiches. Timothy McVey thought he was going to spark a revolution.
The situation here is different that Cairo or Ukraine. Emulating those techniques here would be a very stupid mistake.

And there were 28 additional driver updates available.
