Drudge Report is Pushing Yet Another Crackpot AAPS Doctor Making Claims About Ebola

Misinformation campaign courtesy of AAPS
Health • Views: 42,398

Yesterday, I posted about how Drudge was spreading all kinds of misinformation about the current outbreak of enterovirus D68. That misinformation was courtesy of the AAPS, which is a crank organization with ties to both Rand and Ron Paul, filled with racists and xenophobes.

Well, the AAPS is back in the Drudge headlines courtesy of WND.

Today, Drudge is linking to WND and an article where a different AAPS doctor is being cited in claiming that it’s irresponsible to send US soldiers to West Africa to support the efforts to stop the Ebola pandemic.

According to WND (link donotlink’d), Lee Hieb, it’s now apparently irresponsible for President Obama to send troops to provide logistics to help stop the Ebola epidemic across West Africa.

“You can see that these doctors, who are highly trained people, got themselves infected,” said Dr. Lee Hieb, former president of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons. “So sending troops into an area, if they’re dealing one-on-one with a patient, they’re not going to be able to protect themselves very well. It’s not easy to [prevent transmission], because you get tired and you get careless and you make some simple mistakes. All it takes is one virus particle.”

Dr. Hieb said quarantine measures should be taken to control the outbreak and prevent Ebola from coming to America.

“You don’t get Ebola from Europe,” she told WND. “You get Ebola from Africa. And it’s a really simple formula: Don’t let people fly to America if they’ve been to areas where there’s an outbreak. When there’s an outbreak, stop air [traffic] flow.”

It’s still more purposeful misinformation since the US mission will not put the troops in direct contact with those with the virus. It’s a logistics, training, and support mission for those who are providing direct medical assistance.

It’s not without risk, but the troops going in are there supporting CDC, USAID, and other agencies providing assistance.

One of the reasons that doctors, nurses, and other caregivers are getting infected in Africa is because they are running into a shortage of proper facilities and isolation equipment to protect themselves and others from the disease. US troops have MOPP gear, which is designed to protect from a wide range of chemical, nuclear, and biological contaminants. They’re bringing those with them.

And who exactly is this Doctor Lee Hieb? She’s running for Governor in Iowa, wants to repeal common core (among many other government programs), and adheres to the same wingnutty principles that the AAPS spreads.

I’ve fixed a couple of spelling errors, but also ran a Google search for the AAPS, and among their latest exploits are suing to get Obamacare repealed, which have failed. The 7th Circuit is the latest to toss one of their suits. In fact, it was Judge Richard Posner who unleashed a can of whoop-ass on the AAPS astroturfing group, as Charles Pierce notes.

Today, Judge Richard Posner drove this logic home. “You’re suggesting a breathtaking expansion of jurisdiction, aren’t you?” he asked. “You’re suggesting that anyone with a potential economic injury from a law can bring a suit. Where would you stop?”

“The stopping point is if someone is not being regulated by a particular statute,” plaintiff’s attorney Andrew Schlafly replied. “This is a regulation of the medical field, not some remote tax.” He then argued that people forced to buy insurance will never seek out cash practices in order to avoid paying for healthcare twice. This did not satisfy Posner. “That’s like saying people who get food stamps don’t pay as much for groceries.

They also think that the so-called war on coal won’t save lives, even though the science proves that reducing emissions will improve public health downwind (to say nothing of reducing incidence of black lung for those who are mining it (reduce the reliance, you reduce the need to mine it).

You’ll notice that the same names keep cropping up in relation to AAPS, whether it’s the Pauls (Ron or Rand), Schlafly, and assorted right wing outlets that use the AAPS to make it think that their positions hold merit when they’re logic- and fact-challenged.

RWNJs should cheer at the thought of Ebola transmission occurring in the US. Another thing to blame on Obama and liberals.

Yes, because an orthopedist is a specialist in infectious disease. /////facepalm

She’s also completed a fellowship in “Integrative and Regenerative Medicine from the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine,” an organization that is not recognized by the AMA or the American Board of Medical Specialties.

She’s a nutcase.

re: #3 Sionainn

Rinse and repeat. It was the same thing with the entervirus nonsense the other day. People who are doctors with claimed expertise in one area pontificating about something outside their area, but doing so with zero facts or information. They’re simply projecting their own bias on events.

And while the AAPS is a crank organization and wingnut media outlets are attracted to them for juicy quotes, it is Drudge and similar outlets that are spreading this nonsense far and wide.

People may actually fall for it - not knowing that the AAPS is a wingnut outlet that has zero credibility in the medical field, and where the only credentials that count for the AAPS is the ability to be a libertarian/wingnut who disdains the AMA and other actual credentialing medical groups that make sure that doctors are board certified.

And also right near Scotland yesterday this happened:

The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) has flown its first Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) sortie out of RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, the service announced on 19 September.

A pair of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter aircraft from 6 Squadron were scrambled to intercept two Russian Air Force Tupolev Tu-95 ‘Bear’ strategic bomber aircraft that had ventured close to, but had not entered, UK airspace.

News of the interception comes just over two weeks after RAF Lossiemouth assumed responsibility for policing the UK’s QRA North air defence zone, following the closure of nearby RAF Leuchars as a frontline fighter base. With QRA North standing up at RAF Lossiemouth on 1 September, 6 Squadron was joined at the base by 1 (Fighter) Squadron on 8 September.

The article also includes a photo of a similar interception from 2011:

I make a pretty exceptional sweet potato pie myself, very tasty and simple to make with the exception of getting (almost) all the “strings” out while mixing.

Just have to mix by running the beaters at low speed several times to entangle the strings in the blades before wiping them off. Not a big deal really, just avoid making the mix frothy by using too high a speed.

Oh, because it will likely include tons of examples where the media get bashed and the police pumped up, without really addressing the root cause of the issues.

46 Dark_Falcon  Sep 20, 2014 1:59:55pm

It turns out that Rick Rosenthal used to be an anchor for WGN in Chicago. Here’s a write up from the Chicago Tribune, though its from 1999. I do need to point out that at that time the Tribune and WGN were owned by the same company (that only changed last year).

I also found the listing for Rosenthal’s company on Manta.com, a site I often use for my own work. He runs it out of his home, it looks like. The address is for an apartment on Green Bay Road in Winnetka, IL. Winnetka is a very rich North Shore suburb of Chicago, and the building in only 3 blocks from the Winnetka stop of UP North Metra line into Chicago. So he must be doing well, because that location is very pricey.

It means the “assault on the reputations of law enforcement by an overzealous and often hostile media”. Those are my words for what Rosenthal would say, to be clear, not his own. Wingnuts will also put in additional smears against the press on matters such as these, but someone who makes a living giving talks like this wouldn’t go for the hard stuff on a flyer. There’s more at work here. His obtuseness regarding the the British National Party (BNP) and English Defence League (EDL) is very telling.

I saw that you spotted that right away— you’re absolutely right.

Heeheehee….

Take as needed.

He’s completely uninformed and can’t be bothered to read, so there’s really no point in talking to him.

I’ve been listening to you and Aye Pod’s posts on the subject because gosh you guys actually live there and aren’t some dickbag on the internet with some agenda. What he and others like him have done though is made me gone from fairly indifferent on the subject matter to an aye.

Mocking Maher DF for seeming to imply that beating children was a “black thing.”

Hey being descended in part from the island across the Irish sea and with a teeny bit Scottish, I’m a natural. Hell outside of my German background which is Bavarian likely haha, I’m a walking genealogical background full with people who just wanted self determination.

There’s nothing wrong with having an agenda as long as you have it for decent reasons and don’t let it drive you to do bad things. You and Jimmah meet both criteria easily.

re: #37 Eventual Carrion

My mom took 2nd at the county fair this year for quilting. She has gotten 2 firsts before and this is her 3rd 2nd.

I have a friend who enters pies for judging at the MN State Fair every year. The one year that he asked me to drive him and his pie entry to the fairgrounds, his first pie hadn’t turned out perfectly so he quickly baked another one that stil wasn’t quite ready to come out of the oven with 20 minutes left to meet the deadline. He left it in the oven until the last possible moment, then we took off using all of the shortcuts that I knew to get to the fairground. We were actually on the entance road to the fairground when I suddenly thought I’d missed a turn and tapped on the brakes without thinking. My friend lurched forward, followed by a splat on the floor of my Ranger, and after a moment of stunned silence, my friend started laughing while I was just about ready to cry, I felt so bad.

Not all of the pie had hit the floor mat, so a lot of it was still edible, so I spent the next 15 minutes picking at the remains of a most delicious cherry pie from the floor of my truck. Yum.

Hubby so much wants to visit the places I’ve been in the Pennines and in Scotland. It will have to wait about 5 more years when he retires, but I’ll definitely be in touch since Glasgow will most likely be our arrival airport, if not Manchester.

I will say this. It amazes me that Americans can talk with pride about our own founders and how they bravely broke away from Britain and yet feel they can tell the Scots that they should stick with Britain because “it’s better for them.” And honestly, it’s an attitude I’ve seen from people I not only consider friends but ideological allies. I don’t like it. If you think Scotland is better off part of the UK, that’s fine and a legitimate opinion but I don’t like Americans who have never lived in Scotland and are the direct beneficiaries of a war of independence telling people they must stay a part of something. I realize the jerk in question is Canadian. Rant off I suppose.

Speaking only for myself, I didn’t say Scotland ‘must’ do anything. I said I felt it was in their best interests to stay in the UK, but at no time did I ever imply that it was anything other than their decision.

A black sociology professor at Georgetown had an op-ed in the NY Times on Wednesday suggesting the same thing. But it’s likely his opinion was based on more than the faces he’s seen recently on TV.

Oh I am not talking about you here. In fact, I didn’t even know your opinion on the matter. I am talking about Americans who bravely extol the virtues of our own founders and revolutionaries while telling Scotland they’re better off “together.” Besides you yourself have honestly admitted that you would have been a Tory during the Revolution which I found amazingly honest heh.

Yes, it is. There was a review in the NYT Book Review and I’ve been dying to learn more about machine politics since I saw Gangs of New York and the talk about the bosses in the Roosevelts series rebooted that interest. It’s interesting because there’s much I find admirable about Tammany- they were willing to lend a sympathetic ear to immigrants when most were not but OTOH they were very prejudiced when it came ot those of other races. That to me is one of the tragedies of the Irish-American disapora that our ancestors often could not see in African-Americans those who were also oppressed by a similar type machine in America that ours were in Ireland. That John Mitchel, a strong opponent of British conduct during the Famine should become a CSA supporter.

So the Roosevelts series has me wanting to learn more about Wendell Wilkie. Seems like an interesting guy.
