Are You Ready for Another Condescending, Insulting Ad From Republicans?

This new ad from the College Republican National Committee, pushing Rick Scott for governor of Florida, is about as grotesquely condescending and demeaning to women as it’s possible to be.

Imagine the “brainstorming” sessions for this:

“You know those women, all they think about is makeup and clothes — so how about if we make the candidates into wedding dresses, and the Rick Scott dress is the cool one? It can’t lose! Governor’s office, here we come!”

“Don’t forget, we need at least one African American in it!”

It’s far beyond tone-deaf at this point — Republicans are just getting weird.

You really have to wonder if there were any women on the staff to consult about this, or if it was just a bunch of guys going “Hey, that’s all my wife/girlfriend talks about!”

Then again, this is the GOP we’re talking about.

So…. If I understand, Rick Scott is something that is only good for one thing, be used one time, will be put on a shelf and never used again, and more often than not, leads to heartache and tears years down the road. Ok, got it!

And these are the College National Republican Committee people putting this together. This is the future of the GOP, and this is what they think will connect with voters?

sheesh

15 jaunte  Oct 1, 2014 11:44:33am

And they seriously think it will work:

The ad, running for a full minute, is longer than most, and its content stands out amid the more staged candidate-run ads and the ominous issue ads run by outside groups. The trick, says CRNC national chairman Alex Smith, is to start a conversation.

“How do you reach the generation that has their earbuds in and their minds turned off to traditional advertising?” she said. “It’s our goal to start the conversation by presenting ourselves in a culturally relevant way.”

Other ads the group is rolling out will look to draw from young people’s everyday experiences. One ad, which will be targeted at users in Florida, Michigan and Wisconsin, features a student asking a Democratic politician a series of questions about his plans over text. The politician dashes off a quick response: “k.”

“It might appear to be silly on the surface, but there’s absolutely a deeper meaning that will resonate with young voters,” Ms. Smith said. “It’s representative of how Democrats treat young voters - they take them for granted.”

This is great! They are probably upset that Bill Dana won’t let them bring back Jose Jimenez for their Hispanic outreach.

In 1970, Dana announced to ten thousand Mexican-Americans attending a cultural pride festival that “after tonight, José Jiménez is dead,” later holding a mock funeral for José on Sunset Boulevard. In 1997 Dana received an image award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition.

Btw, Mr. Dana is still alive and active at age 89.

The Trendelenburg Position

This may sound like the title of a spy thriller, however, it was, and is, a recommended position in which to fit a client. The client lies on her back with the knees raised. The surface may even be inclined towards the client’s head. The internal organs which need the support of the corset will then be assisted by gravity into their correct locations at which time the corset can be adjusted and tightened.

So comfy!

I was particularly amused by the bit where Mom is clapping enthusiastically as the narrator drones something about tax increases. I suppose the Democrats they invent in their fever dreams are happy about taxation per se, but nobody else is.

Taxes are simply necessary to fund the operations of government. No more and no less.

Maybe they had a budget item for ads and were in the position of having to spend the money, or lose it.

61 Kragar  Oct 1, 2014 12:25:28pm

Apparently, they made a whole series of these ads

CRNC national chairman Alex Smith told the Wall Street Journal that the ads are geared toward experiences young people have every day.

“How do you reach the generation that has their earbuds in and their minds turned off to traditional advertising?” she said. “It’s our goal to start the conversation by presenting ourselves in a culturally relevant way.”

The CRNC also ran basically the same ad for the gubernatorial races in Illinois, Colorado, Arkansas, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Because young women never have to worry about health care, getting a job, paying their bills, etc. All they have to do is worry about a pretty dress and marrying a man.

62 leftynyc  Oct 1, 2014 12:26:18pm

Gee, I can’t imagine why African Americans don’t trust the police in this country. It’s a complete mystery.

“I know what I’ve seen on the video,” he said. “My gut reaction is sort of like everyone else’s - it looks like an instrument that is used to deter violence is being used as a weapon. I think that goes against the spirit of the whole concept behind Tasers.”

Harper couldn’t say whether the Tallahassee Police Department will be sued over the tasing of 61-year-old Viola Young.

“All options are on the table,” he said. “The big thing is we just want to make sure that these types of things don’t happen and that we can start rebuilding our trust in TPD.”

Harper said he couldn’t discuss Young’s injuries. She was treated at the scene and taken to the Leon County Jail on a charge of resisting an officer without violence.

There are always people who fall outside the main demographics in any group.

Ebola Victim in Texas Is Identified as a Liberian, Thomas Eric Duncan

NYT -

Mr. Duncan, the first person to develop symptoms outside Africa during the current epidemic, had direct contact with a woman stricken by Ebola on Sept. 15, just four days before he left Liberia for the United States, the woman’s parents and Mr. Duncan’s neighbors said.

In a pattern often seen here in Monrovia, the Liberian capital, the family of the woman, Marthalene Williams, 19, took her by taxi to a hospital with Mr. Duncan’s help on Sept. 15 after failing to get an ambulance, said her parents, Emmanuel and Amie Williams. She was convulsing but also seven months pregnant, they said.

Turned away from a hospital for lack of space in its Ebola treatment ward, the family said it took Ms. Williams back home in the evening, and that she died hours later, around 3 a.m.

That response by AmericanInEngland is pretty good, I have to say. It certainly made me chuckle, because ‘AIE’ nails the Freeper mentality dead on.

From his forum posts, It would appear that AmericaninEngland is something of a mole or infiltrator from the reality based community, quite biting at times too:

Because being sick in America means that lots of corporations make lots of money off of you. That’s why America has the most sickness.

Ah, Corvettes, the Viagara (sic) of cars. Old guys with little endowment love em, especially when their Hummers get too difficult to climb into.

The NHS horror stories are mostly just that, stories. I had a colonoscopy show possible colon cancer and was in for further investigation within days. The wife had a yearly post breast cancer (diagnosed while we lived in the US and we had to wait 3 months for insurance to approve the mastectomy) show numbers that worried the NHS doc, and she was in treatment by the end of the week.

Non life threatening stuff may take months, ie, joint replacement or dental issues, bit otherwise, it ain’t that bad, and you’d be hard pressed to find many Brits that would trade it for the American model.

Is it perfect? Hell no. Is it as bad as you read about at sources with a vested interest in scaring Americans away from an NHS style system in the US? Hell no. Here in the UK, when ER waits hit 2-3 hours, it’s a scandal, in America, 2-3 hours was a short wait.

Most likely, given the nature of FR, there will be a major purge by 2016 - just in time for the Presidential elections. Who knows…..maybe even one later this month as we head into the mid-terms, but I think most FR purges take place during Presidential election years.

It’s funny because it’s true.

Well, it was the whole reasoning behind the 1994 law that limited SS protection for former Presidents to 10 years after they leave office.
Fortunately, that was changed last year, but not before this fiscally responsible congresscritter said this:

“I think we have seen that being a former president can be a pretty lucrative career, and I feel that after 10 years, if these former presidents feel the need for additional security, they should pay for it themselves,” said Rep. Howard Coble, R-N.C., in a statement. He led the fight in 1994 to limit protection for former presidents to just 10 years.

There’s gays, Muslims, and non-believers for that. It darkly amuses me that they will compare themselves to Holocaust victims yet you have people like Rick Wiles openly saying he wants Ebola to wipe out “sluts, gays, and atheists.” I have to say the same thing that I said earlier. I despise fundies. I despise their whole worldview but wishing for a terrible disease like Ebola on them is the furthest thing from my mind. I merely wish they wouldn’t be hateful bigots. Wiles OTOH wishes for me being a religious skeptic, my gay friends and family, and the women I know who dare to use birth control or have a sex life that isn’t up to RIck’s measures deserve this terrible disease.

As more details come out about this, I suspect the patient did not give all pertinent details to medical personnel in the US when he was first sent back home with some antibiotics for “flu-like symptoms”.

Had he said then that he stood a deathwatch for someone in Liberia who died of Ebola, I can’t imagine him being sent home with useless antibiotics.

If The Hill, FoxNews and RedState have a problem with no service medals for the current personnel serving in Iraq, they need to take that up with DoD.
Service medals are for specific campaigns, so boo-fuckin-hoo that a new campaign medal/ribbon hasn’t yet been announced for this relatively new military event.

When you’re answering, if you don’t know the immediate answer, don’t necessarily be shy to talk them through the process that you’re thinking, if you can. That can help demonstrate what you know, as long as you don’t try to pass it off as the “right” answer but instead address how you could go about solving the problem/finding the solution/whatever.

I tend to agree. The most cynical take on this is that the reaction of the US hard right to the Holocaust (and Nazi Germany in general) is proceeding as follows:

1) Silence
2) Trivializing it
3) Denial
4) Repeat

There has certainly never been an honest effort within the US right to confront their urges to find human scapegoats for political problems.

And then there’s this:

Ohio woman sues sperm bank after birth of mixed-race baby

A white Ohio woman is suing a sperm bank for mistakenly giving her and her white same-sex partner sperm from an African-American donor, her lawyer said on Wednesday.

Jennifer Cramblett, 36, of rural Uniontown in northeastern Ohio, sued Midwest Sperm Bank in Chicago on Tuesday in Cook County Circuit Court for “wrongful birth and breach of warranty” following the birth of Cramblett’s daughter two years ago.

Cramblett said in the lawsuit that although she and her partner love the “beautiful, obviously mixed race” little girl, she is concerned about bringing her up in a white, racially intolerant community in a white “often unconsciously insensitive” family.

Cramblett said in the suit that she has been told by therapists and experts that she must relocate to a racially diverse community.

[…]

Cramblett said her family is already uncomfortable with the fact that she is a lesbian, and that she doesn’t want her daughter to feel stigmatized or unrecognized due to the circumstances of her birth.

I don’t know about anyone else, but if, when I grew up, I found out my parents sued someone because I wasn’t what they wanted… then I’d feel stigmatized.

However, I haven’t seen anything in the reporting in this case that shows that the patient told the full story in the first ER visit —- i.e., that he was in the same house in Liberia as someone who died of Ebola, and had contact with that person in attempting to secure medical care for her.

Perhaps I’m being unduly optimistic, but I don’t really believe the full story would have been missed by the medical establishment. Even if the insurance situation was unfavorable.

More on the Ebola patient:

nytimes.com

“Mr. Duncan, the first person to develop symptoms outside Africa during the current epidemic, had direct contact with a woman stricken by Ebola on Sept. 15, just four days before he left Liberia for the United States, the woman’s parents and Mr. Duncan’s neighbors said.

“In a pattern often seen here in Monrovia, the Liberian capital, the family of the woman, Marthalene Williams, 19, took her by taxi to a hospital with Mr. Duncan’s help on Sept. 15 after failing to get an ambulance, said her parents, Emmanuel and Amie Williams. She was convulsing and seven months pregnant, they said.

“Turned away from a hospital for lack of space in its Ebola treatment ward, the family said it took Ms. Williams back home in the evening, and that she died hours later, around 3 a.m.

“Mr. Duncan, who was a family friend and also a tenant in a house owned by the Williams family, rode in the taxi in the front passenger seat while Ms. Williams, her father and her brother, Sonny Boy, shared the back seat, her parents said. Mr. Duncan then helped carry Ms. Williams, who was no longer able to walk, back to the family home that evening, neighbors said.” More

I was reading an article from an Middle east news site once talking about reforming the camel racing industry over there due to the use/abuse of young boys as the jockeys. I had to do a double take because they do, in fact, call them camel jockeys over there.

From the looks of it, there is some serious misconduct by one or more grand jurors. Shaun King posted this earlier, and this is probably the root of the problem:

There are good reasons not to trust the process in STL and this grand jury, because of the way that the prosecutor McCulloch chose to set it in motion. He has no interest in prosecuting cops - he’s got a history of not prosecuting excessive force/police brutality cases. This is no different.
