And Now, Jeb Bush

Very predictable
Politics • Views: 31,953

To no one’s surprise, Jeb Bush is making noises like he intends to run for President.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said Tuesday he’s taking a major step toward running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2016, a move that could put pressure on other candidates to make their intentions known sooner than expected.

“I have decided to actively explore the possibility of running for President of the United States,” Bush, 61, wrote in a Facebook post to which he linked from his verified Twitter account. “In January, I also plan to establish a Leadership PAC that will help me facilitate conversations with citizens across America to discuss the most critical challenges facing our exceptional nation. The PAC’s purpose will be to support leaders, ideas and policies that will expand opportunity and prosperity for all Americans.”

If America elects a third Bush to the presidency, we’ll deserve whatever we get.

Think of how abysmal the rest of the GOP 2016 contenders must be if Jeb Bush is getting serious consideration.

Mmmm, yes. The facilitating conversations with America bit. Always my favorite part of a presidential candidacy.

Jeb’s expecting that, like Romney in 2012, the wingnuts will be too busy fighting over the “Not Bush” they support this week that he’ll cruise to the nomination on 2nd and 3rd place finishes.

What I do know is that no matter who the opposing nominee is, we can’t afford more Supreme Court picks like Alito, Thomas, or Roberts.

Basically the whole of Jeb’s appeal is he’s got no immediately apparent negatives. Problem is, he’s also got very few positives.

34 lawhawk  Dec 16, 2014 11:23:54am

Any pundit that claims that Jeb Bush issuing a statement that he’s now studying whether to throw his hat in the ring for the GOP nomination for the White House deserves to be met with nothing but scorn and derision.

Bush’s announcement doesn’t change anything. More precisely, it doesn’t change fact that he’s still studying the idea of running. He hasn’t officially declared. He hasn’t somehow upset the order of things in the GOP side of who might or might not run.

He was always a name out there who might run. This doesn’t change any of that.

Substantively, he might be better than most of the other plausible contenders on the GOP side, but that’s like saying that week old moldy leftovers are better than month old leftovers. They’re still awful and not good for you.

Pundits might think that this will somehow flush out other pretenders/contenders to throw their hat in the ring officially, but we still haven’t seen anyone do that. Sure, it’s likely Jeb runs, or that Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, and Chris Christie are likely to run, but that’s not any change since last week.

re: #40 nines09

Though an early supporter of the Vietnam War, Romney avoided military service at the height of the fighting after high school by seeking and receiving four draft deferments, according to Selective Service records. They included college deferments and a 31-month stretch as a “minister of religion” in France, a classification for Mormon missionaries that the church at the time feared was being overused. - See more at: boston.com

My biggest concern about this upcoming election is the youth vote and the potential candidates we could run as Democrats. If the Republicans manage to get a young prospect to run on a civil liberties/Libertarian platform we could end up in a bad, bad place with the youngsters.

Do I think it will happen? No, they’d have to get past the 27% and no way that will happen unless they promise to save babies and make Christianity compulsory, which is the opposite of a Libertarian position.

I want to support Hillary, I do, but I’m not sure she’s any different than the Eldest Bush President. Biden is too old, though I’d love to have him for the sheer humor potential. One of the Castro brothers? Maybe. But I am just not excited to vote for another President Clinton. I will because I’m not an idiot, but I’ll do it under duress.

Right and honestly that was what turned me off about Clinton in ‘08. The whole campaign felt like a coronation and her campaign acted like it was somehow heresy that anyone let alone some junior senator from Illinois should be challenging her for the nomination. I feel we made the right decision in first nominating Obama and then re-electing him over his opponents. I am still don’t know if Hillary is the answer. I don’t question that she has strengths as a candidate but I do feel that as I said we can’t just hand her the nomination and two I think she does have weaknesses as well.

Yeah, I saw the other day as well, and I thought to myself, ‘Putin, Maduro and Khameini can’t be too thrilled to hear something like that’ because if oil were to stay at $40/bbl for the foreseeable future, that’s gonna blow a big ol’ hole in Moscow’s budget, which is predicated on oil in the $100/bbl range.

I found Hillary’s campaign against Obama in the primary very off putting. It was really awful how she fought to get the Florida votes to count after everyone had agreed months earlier that Florida would not be counted because they changed their primary date. So, Obama did not spend any time there before the primary and then Hillary, her staff and the Pumas had a fit that Florida was not included.

It also disgusted me that at some point when Obama was doing really well, Hillary said something “heartfelt” with a noticeable (fake?) tearful sounding catch in her voice and CNN played those few seconds pretty much non-stop for 24 hours with talking heads all saying things about “the real Hillary”, and the importance of showing passion, bleh, bleh, yada, BLEEEH.

Yeah I’m not saying it would work, just that she can say, relative to ISIS and other stuff going on that she wasn’t in the Administration, etc, and if she had been she would have done or recommended this or that. I think early in the ISIS hysteria she made remarks to the effect of having argued for a more aggressive strategy in Syria and so on.

But ultimately she didn’t want to be tied down to a job if or when she decided to mount a prez campaign.

Not to defend Hillary, but I recall the whole PUMA movement came from a conservative operative pretending the represent women “who will never cast a vote for Obama.”

Ah okay fair enough then. And I’ll give Clinton credit. Both her and Bill have been strong surrogates for Obama in both his election and re-election but as I got at already a lot in that campaign rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe she’s learned in the past six years. I hope so. I am just not going to be happy if I see the same themes and tropes from the Clinton camp that I saw six years ago.

Yeah I really like stuff like this. Reminds me of tattoo work. Not what some people would consider artwork but it’s definitely art. I forget which city I was in, I think it was Lisbon but one of the tour guides said that the city allows spray paint artists to spray paint a part of the city now and then. It’s cool. Going back again to the Obama Clinton primary, I also really don’t get what was so offensive about Obama saying that Hillary was “likable enough”. I’m a woman and when I heard his comment it seemed like he was acknowledging that she was a worthy opponent because people liked her too and he would not like her to be any more likable or he would lose. But people lost their shit over that comment saying he “sniffed” that comment at her, or that he was disdainfully curt. People said it showed an UGLY side of his personality.

Well, I stand by my interpretation. Obama has not shown himself to be mean spirited. And there is nothing about the comment itself that is hateful. People just said it was and that made it so….as far as all the media were concerned.

re: #159 HappyWarrior

It was very off putting for me as well. Great point about Florida and the PUMAs. What some of her spokespeople said about Obama bothered me as well too. Didn’t one of them imply he was a drug dealer in college? Frankly, a lot of the nasty attacks on Obama that the right has done have some of their roots in the Clinton camp. Hell to be even more frank, I think it was very generous of Obama to offer her SoS, another victor may not have been so magnanimous yet I still have to hear from the Clinton diehards in my own family about how “terrible” Obama was to her yet they ignore how Clinton’s. campaign went at Obama personally while Obama’s campaign criticized Hillary more for her actual actions i.e. the vote on the war resolution. I don’t hate Hillary Clinton so it’s clear but I am strongly of the mind that the Democratic Party could do better than her as a nominee in two years.

Well, just for another perspective, my mom left the Democratic party after the Nevada caucus. She couldn’t belong to a party where the rules state the person with the most votes doesn’t win the race. I honestly would have been happy with either Clinton or Obama and will enthusiastically support Clinton if she’s our nominee.

As many others have said, I will vote for the D candidate because any R candidate today is too ghastly a choice to ponder. I hope that D isn’t Clinton. I could not support her with enthusiasm for a number of valid reasons. That my attitudes about her are so commonly expressed by a whole lot of informed Dems is probably the biggest reason the party needs to look real hard in another direction. Without passion on the D side, an R win is too likely.

That’s the priority? An oil pipeline that may not make sense to build with oil prices where they are now? Ironically, nothing the GOP could do would more effectively defeat the Democrats than by governing quietly and being really, really boring. Which you’d think they’d get behind, what with the limited government thing.

Nope. Gotta piss off everybody at all times at maximum possible speed. It’s not an efficient strategy, but it’s not a strategy. It’s an end-deliverable.

Chuck’s now claiming that he can’t recall the year it happened (2009 or 2010), but that he came upon the malicious feces pile and that he’s the one who reported it.

In either 2009 or 2010 (he can’t recall), he was at Claremont McKenna College when he encountered a friend on the seventh floor of his dorm laying on the bathroom floor. “I walked in and he was sweating profusely and in a pile of his own shit,” recalled Johnson. “I basically helped him get cleaned off.”

He says his friend may have been drunk, but “honestly” doesn’t know.

Somehow the incident quickly exploded into urban legend that it was really Johnson who took a dump on the floor when really, he says, it was his friend, whom he won’t name. He says the guy is successful and he has no desire to hurt him. “Everything has worked out in his life,” he said. “I could very easily expose the entire situation.”

Johnson sees his role as biblical or spiritual: “God put me in his way and I tried to do the right thing.”

But even a good Samaritan can tire of taking care of someone else’s shit. That following year, Johnson decided to move off campus. “I was tired of taking care of people,” he said. “I had worked at old folks homes back in the day.”

He doesn’t remember the year, but thinks that God put him in a position to do the right thing. Ummm, sure.

Then claims that he moved off campus because he didn’t want to care for other people. That actually makes sense if he was taking shit for being involved in the magical fecal matter dump tour of 2009 (or 2010).

He claims that he was a do-gooder, though the only thing I see is pooh-gooder.

He then claims that he got sick in NYC, and woke up on a park bench with a hooker taking care of him. Ummm… He could have simply stated it was a good samaritan and left it at that, but no, he went and claimed it was a hooker.

I’m not into the anti-Hillary fervor. I see the time for a truly economic-progressive candidate as 8 to 16 years out (hopefully only 8).

The right wing still has too much power at this stage, and the country is still too divided. Give it a few more years for better demographics to take over. Don’t believe me? Take a look at the Senate elections for 2016 — we’ll be fortunate to have 52 in the Senate after that.

In the meantime, we need to be educating voters, and helping the disadvantaged to get voter ID. (E.g. There are lots of reasons that you need to vote in the midterms! Your local politicians matter, so get involved! etc.)

Hillary will do okay during the next 8 fucked-up years. At least she knows how to fight back at the Rethugs.

I’m in agreement. Although I’m not 100% thrilled about Hillary, she does seem to be the best bet to win against the lunatic Republicans—and if nothing else makes electing a Democrat in 2016 imperative, the Supreme Court certainly does.

Also, though I know this is anecdotal, at every political event I’ve attended in the past year, the Ready For Hillary peeps have been there and been received very enthusiastically. And they’re young, diverse and excited.

WHOOOO HOOOO!

Finally scored that second job I’ve been looking for. 15 ~ 20 hours a week as a cook for Pizza Hut. Minimum wage & still no bennies but hopefully enough money that I actually have the ability have more than $.50 left in the bank after paying only 3/4 of my bills. Right next door to the hotel too :)

OTOH, my health insurance even with ACA is going to $42 a month from $5.

I’d love to make one of those Rat Bastard anti-raising the minimum wage pukes have to live on my income for 6 months…

Hang in there guy!

On November 28th 2014, Jackson Police Officer Matt Peters came to 20 year old Eddie Harris’ residence looking for an individual to take to the hospital for a psychological evaluation. Peters entered the house without a warrant and when Harris came down to see who walked in his house, Peters shot his dog, Kane, just feet in front of him at the bottom of the stair case.

“When I asked him why he shot my dog, he said he bit him. But he didn’t bite him. He’s a pitbull, man. He was walking around smirking and smiling. The worst part is he smirked and didn’t even apologize or show that he was human. It wouldn’t be so bad if he apologized. What’s so funny about that? Why can he enter my home without permission, without even knocking? He won’t even give me his badge number.”

It’s basically the same weapon as the M-16 used by the US military, as well as other militaries world-wide. There are between 2.5-3.7 AR-15s owned by civilians in it various configurations.

President Obama on confirmation of Tony Blinken as Deputy Secretary of State: ‘I am pleased that the Senate has confirmed Antony Blinken as our next Deputy Secretary of State. Over decades of dedicated public service, Tony has displayed extraordinary integrity, judgment, and inclusiveness as he has implemented America’s foreign policy priorities’ - @WhiteHouse

Given all this warranted skepticism expressed toward Sandra McElroy in front of grand jurors by prosecutors—and the incredibly obvious flaws in her testimony itself—it’s hard to believe that any sane juror, no matter how inclined to believe Darren Wilson, would have taken her testimony seriously. While the Smoking Gun’s investigation is useful in undermining those in the media who would take McElroy’s words out of context, it’s doubtful—given the evidence currently at hand—that the grand jury’s ultimate decision would have been any different had she never testified.

The question is why was she ever put in front of the grand jury in the first place. What process allowed someone who was never at the scene and whose story changed significantly to get in front of the GJ and muddy the waters by claiming to confirm she saw events unfold exactly as Wilson claimed.

The line moved surprisingly well, except for the people who didn’t have any idea what they were doing and didn’t have their packages together, etc.

That said, I’ve never seen a longer line at the post office, and that’s saying something.

+a bazillion on the flat rate packages. That was one of the best ideas that the post office ever had.

I’m sure that they are getting a lot of stuff too from UPS, with the UPS SurePost shipping. It’s handled by UPS until it hits the destination city, then passed off to the local PO for the “the last mile”. It’s a couple of bucks cheaper than regular UPS 3 day, and adds 1 day to the transit time.

Exactly. If the prosecutor goes to such lengths to question her testimony, then why put her testimony on the record? I think Ben makes the mistake in assuming that, because the prosecutors called her testimony into question, the jurors didn’t give it much weight. I draw the opposite conclusion, that a juror is going to see this testimony and think that, even if the prosecutor thinks it unreliable, he must think there’s some value to it or else he’d have left it out.

There are times when attorneys will spend time on a point to discredit and it has the opposite effect. If you tell the GJ not to consider X, that only makes people wonder why it’s being discredited.

It still makes no sense why they’d include her testimony in the first place unless it was to attempt to show that there was dispute among witnesses about what happened (and when you exclude her, there’s consensus for the witnesses not named 40 or Wilson).

I remember when postal carriers were treated with a lot more respect by mgmt (before email, social media, and into its present manifestation as a delivery system for wasteful junk mail and the onslaught of packages during the holidays. Instead of a uniform, contractors wear a fluorescent vest-like cover over their regular clothing and drive their own vehicles (paid mileage).

This quasi-P.O. system today has horrible mgmt—a lot of the carriers are contractors and get absolutely no respect, either in pay or working conditions. It’s run like any other business, although still regulated by Congress, being authorized by the US Constitution (one of few agencies).

It’s not your grandmother’s post office, kids.

It only really makes sense if you conclude that the prosecutors were deliberately spiking their own grand jury by tossing it everything but the kitchen sink with an intent on baffling the jurors with bullshit. There really is no way that this woman would have shown up at trial, so to include her testimony here seems a deliberate attempt to introduce doubt in jurors as to the value of eyewitness testimony.

For those of us who are tech heads and have accounts at Ars Technica, go change your password there:

Ars Technica: Ars was briefly hacked yesterday; here’s what we know

Kind of ironic that a tech site like Ars gets hacked, particularly one that covers security issues like they do and that has a fairly considerable (and vocal) portion of their reader/user base that worships at the altar of Saints Assange and Snowden, but c’est la vie.

I changed my password as soon as I saw the headline on their front page; for keeping track of all of my passwords and making it dead simple to change any of them quickly and easily, no matter what device I’m on, LastPass Premium is the best $12/year that I spend.

I browsed at BBB today after the post office trip. That at least gave me an idea on prices. No coupons with me so I didn’t buy anything. Ikea is on the list to hit at some point anyway because pillows.

Mr. klys has …some interesting texture quirks. Mostly relating to fabric. It makes shopping for things like this …fun.

I’ve had really good luck at places like TJ Max and Ruby Tuesday and such. You never know what they are going to have in stock and if you don’t mind your sheets not necessary being from the same set—it can work out well.

I use solid light blue and white mostly, so it doesn’t matter if they are from different sets.

I can elimanate Hufflepuff though. Other 3 are valid.

The other three are all pretentious whore houses where young wizards go to have their egos stroked long, hard, and dry. Hufflepuff is where the fuckin’ party is, next to the kitchens and the only house that never once produced a dark wizard. Nobody ever poops on the floor there, but if they did by accident they’d immediately own it, apologize and everyone would forgive them.

And by “at it again,” we mean falling for Internet hoaxes and old parody newspaper stories, threatening to sue people for libel, giving interviews so full of narcissistic self-regard we wonder how the interviewers could hear him with his head so far up his own ass, and generally making himself the most pathetic media spectacle since Howard Hughes’s diaries turned up in a burlap sack in the desert near Las Vegas.

The terrorist attack at a Peshawar army public school is weighing on my mind. The War on Terror seems as if it will never end. I’m not religious at all, but I do believe in human evil. What happened in Pakistan is pure evil. What was going on in the minds of the gunmen when they were mowing down students indiscriminately? With guns, they killed almost as many people who died on 19 April 1995 in Oklahoma City.

My heart aches for the victims and their families. I really fucking hate it when I hear about these awful attacks (i.e. the mall in Kenya, Anders Brevik, every mass shooting in the US).

Holy shit. Yet, we’re “post-racial”? Even taking the gazillionaires out of the picture, white wealth would still average much higher than Black or Hispanic, no doubt.

“All American households since the recovery have started to reduce their ownership of key assets, such as homes, stocks and business equity. But the decrease in asset ownership tended to be proportionally greater among minority households. For example, the homeownership rate for non-Hispanic white households fell from 75.3% in 2010 to 73.9% in 2013, a percentage drop of 2%. Meanwhile, the homeownership rate among minority households decreased from 50.6% in 2010 to 47.4% in 2013, a slippage of 6.5%.

“While the current wealth gaps are higher than at the beginning of the recession, they are not at their highest levels as recorded by the Fed’s survey. Peak values for the wealth ratios were recorded in the 1989 survey — 17 for the white-to-black ratio and 14 for the white-to-Hispanic ratio. But those values of the ratios may be anomalies driven by fluctuations in the wealth of the poorest — those with net worth less than $500. That, along with people who are “underwater” on their loans/house value or have no real equity, depleted savings used to catch up, jobs that offered no increases, loss of the kinds of jobs that used to offer a modicum of security and decent pay, like mfg, education debt, consumer debt—there are many factors that enter into this. Twenty years ago, I had a good job, a nice house, new car. Today, I rent, have a used car, but no debt, and can squeeze a penny until Lincoln squeals because I’m exeedingly frugal and don’t “impulse” buy anything. Everything is planned, but I’ve learned to do this over a lifetime, although I was taught from a very early age that shelter, utilities and food come first—everything else is “gravy” and must be saved for, or put off.

It’s very sad to see people think they’re realizing a dream, only to find out soon enough that it was a pile of shit.

This “scoop” UpChuck is pretending to have was already old news over a decade ago.

Jesus fucking Christ. I’m sending this to my father - a secular educator for the past 40 years - and his response ought to be…interesting. I’ll share when and if he responds (he does teh Twitterz pretty rarely).

re: #550 FemNaziBitch

How much of this was bad loans to people who didn’t qualify —that ended-up losing their homes around 2008?

People were pushed to purchase and refinance at ridiculous terms. I know, we refinanced and it was insane what they were willing to give us. If someone hasn’t worked in the finance industry, they may not really understand what they are signing.

re: #560 Justanotherhuman

I assume you’ve both read this. There was predatory lending to black people from the moment they had enough $ to buy.

re: #565 #FergusonFireside

And a hell of a lot of white people got rich from it.

“Black families making $100,000 typically live in the kinds of neighborhoods inhabited by white families making $30,000.”

This is a truism. And there is still “steering”. You can’t tell me this still isn’t done by real estate agents. Even if they don’t steer, the seller can refuse the offer if they know the race of the buyer and don’t want to “offend” their neighbors. And the lone Black family who manages to buy into a formerly all white community can suffer isolation, threats, and made to feel exceedingly unwelcome.

It makes me want to cry.

re: #559 PT Barnum

OT, but anybody else watching Ascension?

Yeah, but not loving it. If most everything else wasn’t reruns, I wouldn’t bother finishing.

Intriguing premise, awesome sets and costumes and cinematography… mediocre writing, competent acting, I suspect the ending is going to be a big letdown.

Dunno about the other domains, but poophobbit.com is probably available.

Probably. :O
