If this is true, it may explain reluctance by US to disclose the email evidence earlier, since NK’s net services (including email) go thru China. Presumably it was not “just metadata”.

I don’t automatically accept this as proof, but in the real world there would be grave consequences if the FBI lied about something this important, and then were found out. Occam’s Razor says it’s more likely they’re telling the truth.

re: #20 Charles Johnson

On the ledger of evidence for and against NK involvement, there’s far more evidence pointing to North Korean involvement than not. So far, Chuckles and other ppl claiming that North Korea isn’t involved, or isn’t primarily involved, or had someone on the inside, or other permutations of non-North Korean involvement, have just theories to base their claims on.

The FBI is providing substantive information about why they say NK is behind it. And the FBI is still more trustworthy than Chuckles’ sources.

26 lawhawk  Jan 8, 2015 11:31:52am

This is a rather sad and disturbing case. The Connecticut Supreme Court upheld a prior ruling Thursday that a 17-year-old cancer patient cannot refuse chemotherapy treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma.

This young woman had refused chemo, but state protective services had gotten temporary custody to make sure that she received treatments. She had two other treatments before running away, and a missing persons report was filed.

Her mother has stood by her daughter. The daughter then sued to stop the treatments, claiming that she didn’t want to poison her body.

If she were 18, this wouldn’t be an issue since as an adult she’d be able to make the decision to stop her treatment or not do anything. But as a minor, she doesn’t have that right.

By refusing care, she was pretty much giving herself no chance at long term survival. With treatment, she should be able to go into remission.

So, it does involve, you know, their foreign policy as well. When people do this, you know, the rejection of the violence has to be made, and with that I agree.”

While people continue to focus on events in Paris and the ongoing manhunt for the duo behind the terror attack yesterday, Boko Haram is busy adding to its already significant body count.

Local officials are warning that hundreds have been killed since the weekend. A few have suggested 2,000 or more are killed or missing as the terror group overran multiple villages and burned everything to the ground in their wake.

And they did so after overrunning government forces in Baga, which houses the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) made up of troops from Nigeria, Niger and Chad.

Security analysts this week said that Baga was of strategic importance for Boko Haram, as it was thought to be the last town in northern Borno under federal government control.

The militants, who have seized more than two dozen towns in northeast Nigeria in the last six months, now control all three of Borno’s borders with Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

It’s a huge disaster, but sadly we wont see vigils or demands for justice or US force there. Because Africa.

Linton Zoo lions play with old Christmas trees

Lions at a Cambridgeshire zoo are being given old trees to play with as a post-Christmas treat.

Real Christmas trees are “like catnip” to lions, Linton Zoological Gardens’ director Kim Simmons said.

The trees are used as toys by the big cats while others are used in the zoo’s bio-burner to provide additional heating for the buildings.

Pictures at the link.

Texas sure has voted for their share of idiots but than God that this idiot failed miserably at the polls, every time.

Texas humorist and singer Kinky Friedman appeared on ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” Wednesday to comment on the friendship between New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.

But in a flip remark Friedman said the pair’s bonding was much more than friendly. Speaking to host Bob Ley, he called the two “the most important, latent homosexual relationship since Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.”

Father charged as girl, five, thrown off US bridge

A Florida man has been charged with murder after police say he threw his five-year-old daughter off a bridge in St Petersburg.

A police officer saw the incident after he followed John Jonchuck Jr, 25, for speeding, Chief Anthony Holloway said.

The girl, who was dropped into 60ft (18m) of water, was found about an hour later and pronounced dead at hospital. […]

A report by the sheriff’s office released on Thursday revealed that Mr Jonchuck’s lawyer had met him the day before to discuss the custody of the five-year-old.

He had been acting strangely, she said, calling her God and asking her to translate a Bible in Swedish.

Twelve hours later, his daughter was dead. […]

re: #26 lawhawk

What’s disgusting about this ruling is that for medical purposes, she is a minor and unable to make the decision herself. On the other hand, if she was being charged with capitol murder, well she is old enough to be charged as an adult and face adult penalties up to and including death. It’s time for this double standard to go. If a minor is old enough to be charged as an adult under the criminal code then they should be allowed to make adult decisions in civil matters.

I think a good case would be made for the opposite; if they are being treated as a minor for civil matter, then they must be treated as a minor for criminal matters. And if there’s a capital crime committed, then there’d have to be a special disposition requiring the prosecutor to show that the person should be charged as an adult.

re: #195 Bubblehead II

What’s disgusting about this ruling is that for medical purposes, she is a minor and unable to make the decision herself. On the other hand, if she was being charged with capitol murder, well she is old enough to be charged as an adult and face adult penalties up to and including death. It’s time for this double standard to go. If a minor is old enough to be charged as an adult under the criminal code then they should be allowed to make adult decisions in civil matters.

She wouldn’t be eligible for the death penalty (Roper v. Simmons).

Same here. I grew up watching quite a bit of anime in my childhood, and I’ve been a fan ever since.

Also, kaiju films and shows like Ultraman. I’d say I’ve been enjoying Japanese pop culture since I was about five or so, LOL.

re: #199 lawhawk

I think a good case would be made for the opposite; if they are being treated as a minor for civil matter, then they must be treated as a minor for criminal matters. And if there’s a capital crime committed, then there’d have to be a special disposition requiring the prosecutor to show that the person should be charged as an adult.

This case stinks. The mother sides with the daughter in her decision not to put poison into her body? Who is leading who here? Did the mother teach her that?
Yes, chemo is toxic, but without it she will probably die.

My nephew had the same Non Hodgkins Lymphoma in his early 20s. Thankfully, after treatment he has been in full remission for over 15 years.
It was tough on him and the family, but I cant imagine any of us not fighting for him to do the treatment.

I could live with that. But the double standard of for this X you are an adult but for this X you are a minor is bullshit and needs to go.

HER CHOICE!

Not at 17, and not for a totally curable disease.

Something does not add up here. 17 year old girls do not usually choose to die. Their mother usually would not agree with that either.

If she was 18, it wouldn’t matter a fig what you or anyone else thought. We do grant adults the right to make their own medical decisions, even if it results in their death.

But she is not 18. In fact she is just barely not 16.

The mother said this

“This is not about death,” Fortin says. “My daughter is not going to die. This is about, ‘This is my body, my choice, and let me decide.’ “

Bullshit. She almost surely will die without the treatment.
I think the mom is influencing her thinking too much.

Does she have the right to make the decision to have an abortion, or does the state get to get involved in that medical decision too?

If completing the pregnancy was going to kill her, and there was no chance the baby would survive, does the state have the right to force a minor to have an abortion to save her life?

I am not going to engage in the hypothetical.

Dealing with a highly curable disease here and a suspicion that the mother has unduly influenced her daughter.

By saying flat out that her daughter will not die, she sounds like some kind of fundamentalist or other nutcase.

You know, when I say I am pro-choice, it doesn’t just apply to pregnancy. It means that I believe, strongly, that people have the right to make their own decisions about their bodies. You clearly disagree.

I would note that all the statements you made (“highly curable disease” can clearly correspond to “will die unless the pregnancy is terminated, which is doable” and “unduly influenced her daughter” would absolutely be applicable to someone growing up in a family where abortion is considered murder) would apply to my nasty hypothetical. I even allowed for there to be no chance of the fetus’s survival. It’s pretty clear-cut, and there are substantially fewer side effects to an abortion than there are to chemotherapy.

I’m just curious at what point you draw the line on forcing medical care on minors who in other arenas we do treat as old enough to make their own choices with their bodies.

I hope to hell my mother would respect and stand by my decision of what to do with my body and not let the courts say that because I am 8 months from being a legal adult who could refuse treatment without any challenges, I should be forced into it.

No, it is not.
Pregnancy/Abotion is not the same as curable disease vs almost certain death.

Access to abortion is a medical care issue. Abortion is a medical procedure with fewer side effects than chemotherapy. I will note that pregnancy could result in death, with a clear treatment that would save a life in those situations.

I hope it goes into remission and she isn’t in the minority where even with chemo, she passes away.

NPR quoted the mother as saying “she won’t die”.

I really don’t think the child has been raised in an environment that prepared her to make the decision.
