Less serious news Salem, Oregon is having an owl problem. A problem with one owl.
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow inspired Oregon’s capital to post new warning signs in a park where four runners reported attacks from an angry owl likely defending its nest against perceived threats.
One jogger, a surgeon, said the owl hit him twice in Bush’s Pasture Park in Salem, and so hard he thought he was having a stroke or an aneurysm. Another said the bird swiped his longtime running cap and nicked his scalp.

Halifax Shooting Plot Foiled by Tipster, Police Say - Nova Scotia - CBC News
Police said they took three suspects involved in the alleged plot into custody. Another was found dead in a home in Timberlea, N.S.
“I can tell you that it was a tip, a source from the public that initiated the initial investigation,” said Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer Brian Brennan. “We want people to know we became aware, we acted quickly and intercepted a threat.”
He revealed no more information about the source of the information.
What Nova Scotia police said about the alleged mass shooting plot
He said a man and woman planned to go to a public venue in the Halifax region on Feb. 14 “with a goal of opening fire to kill citizens, and then themselves.”
Brennan said a tip was received Thursday morning that a 19-year-old man from Timberlea and a 23-year-old woman from Geneva, Ill., had access to firearms and presented a significant weapons-related threat.
Police tracked the 19-year-old down to Tiger Maple Drive in Timberlea, entered the house and found him dead early Friday. The roles of the other male suspects, aged 20 and 17, of Halifax and Cole Harbour respectively, is still to be determined as part of the investigation, police said Friday night.

This will blow your socks off. Of course, everyone should be familiar with Billie Holiday’s version.
The story behind the song…
“Strange Fruit” originated as a poem written by Abel Meeropol, a white, Jewish high school teacher from the Bronx and a member of the Communist Party, as a protest against lynchings of black African Americans. In the poem, Meeropol expressed his horror at what Lawrence Beitler’s photograph showed of the 1930 lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana. He published the poem under the title “Bitter Fruit” in 1937 in The New York Teacher, a union magazine.Though Meeropol had asked others (notably Earl Robinson) to set his poems to music, he set “Strange Fruit” to music himself. His protest song gained a certain success in and around New York. Meeropol, his wife Anne, and black vocalist Laura Duncan performed it at Madison Square Garden. Meeropol chose to write as “Lewis Allan” in memory of the names of his two stillborn children. Later, he and his wife Anne adopted Julius and Ethel Rosenberg’s two sons, Michael and Robert, after their parents’ executions. Michael and Robert took the Meeropol surname.

Abel Meeropol can be seen as a reminder that not all Communists were/are evil. He was wrong about many things but his concern about racism was real (for the USSR, American racism was simply a club with which to beat the USA, as Russia remained quite bigoted itself). His willingness to adopt the Rosenbergs’ son and give them his name so they’d not suffer stigma was also honorable. Overall, he can be considered to have done good deal more good than harm.

Both the Rosenberg children went on to careers: Michael was a respected professor of economics, and Robert eventually went to law school. Both remained liberal-left and wrote books about their parents and were convinced their mother Ethel was totally innocent, while their father committed much less than a death penalty crime. But it was the 50s and the Rosenbergs were pretty much, as members of the Communist Party, widely reviled and found guilty by orchestrated public opinion.

I recall reading somewhere that the famous scene at the airport, with “Major Strassers been shot” followed by a series of cuts across all the faces, finishing with “Round up the usual suspects” was originally edited as a straight “statement / response” without the tension building, wondering if Capt. Renault will do the right thing.
Also, the scene at the airport, the Lockheed Constellation in the background is actually a cardboard model and there are little people actors walking around it to give a false image of size. The fog also helped with that. It was because due to the war, they couldn’t shoot at night at the airport.

Fresno police are investigating an incident in which a Madera County sheriff’s lieutenant’s 10-year-old daughter shot her younger sister Friday.
The incident occurred just before 8 a.m. near Bullard and Cornelia avenues. Fresno police Lt. Joe Gomez said officers found an 8-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to her torso. She was talking and in stable condition Friday afternoon at Community Regional Medical Center.
Gomez said preliminary findings are that the girls’ father was getting ready for work and put his handgun on the bed in his bedroom while he was in the bathroom. The magazine was removed from the weapon, but there was a round in the chamber. The 10-year-old grabbed the gun, “manipulated it” and one round discharged, hitting the younger girl in the lower torso. Gomez said the lieutenant immediately called 911 for an ambulance and also notified Fresno police, who sped to the home.

“Uninalienable rights”? Really, Geller?
I’ve wondered about the political leanings of Vilks for a while now. Using “art” as an excuse to vilify another culture is, to me, the same as using hate speech. You can hide behind criticism in your position as “artist”, but art is in the eye of the beholder. I don’t think Vilks is an unsophisticated rube who didn’t know who he was in bed with.

Cops are human, and humans often times think they’ve done something correctly when they didn’t. Sometimes confidence becomes over confidence and then you get this result.
Gun lovers too many times think they are perfect and no mistakes happen if you are a responsible gun owner. Well…anyone want to say this guy wasn’t a responsible gun owner and professional?

I can see where people’s instinct is to say it’s crass to try and contextualize the attack in any way, even while explicitly condemning it. I don’t really have an opinion either way but the reaction is honest and understandable.
On the other hand this week saw the character assassination of three muslims who actually were murdered. The only justification offered for this was the combatting of hate crime allegations, which was ironic, in that those doing it were saying the victims actually deserved to be hated.

I googled “International Freedom Conference” (which she called it), couldn’t find that, and can only surmise that she and Spencer put it on with some kind of private funding.
“Other notable speakers were my lawyer, AFLC’s David Yerushalmi, who has represented me in a number of free speech cases; Israeli scholar Dr. Mordechai Kedar, who held up the Palestinian jihad to the light of reality beyond jihad propaganda; Bev Perlson of Band of Mothers; my European partner Anders Gravers of SIOE; and so many others -” including Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll.

It drives me a bit nuts that it’s 2015 and we’re seeing the sort of hatred and bigotry that once would make you a social pariah now defended as “free speech.” Yeah, I know that under free speech/association that Nazis and the KKK can demonstrate and expect the same protection as those marching for peace or understanding. But how in the hell did we get to the point where people started arguing that being associated with the Klan could be seen as a good thing?

The rather obvious problem with attacks on people like Vilks is that the net effect is the justification of their poisonous rhetoric and a further polarization and destabilization of society.
Radical islamists and european ethno-nationalists are working together to undermine and destroy the peace and prosperity offered by a modern, globalized society. The idea of multiculturalism and mutual respect and tolerance is an affront to both of these factions, and governments would do well to treat them as two sides of the same toxic, anti-social coin.
132 | wheat-dogghazi-bola-trality Feb 14, 2015 6:34:26pm |
It’s very revealing that UpChuck’s latest piece about the attacks on Lars Vilk blames the attackers, and not the victim. Quite different from his usual DARVO posts blaming the victims for their demise or rape or whatever.

VB, who I suppose is offline for Shabbos, posted a tweet about this photo a couple of days ago.
The attached story was that the Chinese authorities had coerced these men into dancing, and to sign a statement all but renouncing their beliefs in Islam.
I went on a search for the origin of the photo, and finally located it yesterday.
The Chinese story here is the local government in Shule County, near Kashgar, put on a “Little Apple (Xiao Pingguo)” dance contest, and “invited” groups to compete. My Uyghur friends tell me that pious men and women would not normally participate in such an event, so the internet rumor that these men were forced to dance, etc., has some truth to it.
If you look at this photo, from the Chinese site, you can tell the dancers are not altogether happy.

OnIslam has a horrible habit of not verifying their sources for as long as it caters to their slant. It’s problematic and counterproductive. Yes, China does have a problem with its oppression of Uyghurs, but I wouldn’t go as far to paint all of China as hostile to Muslims. The status of Hui Muslims would directly contradict the claims made by some that China is an enemy of Islam.

re: #170 electrotek
OnIslam has a horrible habit of not verifying their sources for as long as it caters to their slant. It’s problematic and counterproductive. Yes, China does have a problem with its oppression of Uyghurs, but I wouldn’t go as far to paint all of China as hostile to Muslims. The status of Hui Muslims would directly contradict the claims made by some that China is an enemy of Islam.
Most of the sites running the story are not what I’d call unimpeachable sources. They’ve all just copypasta’d the same content, complete with misspellings and poor grammar, without verifying it. I want to know how much of the viral story is true, and how much has been embellished, so to speak.
The Hui and the Uyghurs are in two different situations, as far as I know. The Hui were Chinese converts to Islam centuries ago, while the Uyghurs are of Turkic heritage and see themselves as separate from Chinese culture. Beijing is trying mightily to quell unrest in Xinjiang, as it also tries to suppress local culture in favor of the Han majority culture. See, also, Tibet.

I totally agree, which is why I get annoyed when some people try to paint this as another example of a “war on Islam”, when China itself is actually more tolerant of Islam than Greece would be.
Xinjiang also has a problem with Saudi-imported Wahabi Islam suppressing local culture in a way that is more discreet and more deadly than the Chinese attempts are. Just look at Pakistan for proof.

Charles, I must bring this to your attention. Lars Vilks has indeed come out in support of a Swedish artist that is a staunch admirer of Anders Breivik, and was invited to speak a mere 200 meters away from where Breivik blew up his first target 4 years ago. It’s from Google Translate of course, but if there are any Swedish speakers here who can provide a better translation that would be greatly appreciated as well.
Lars Vilks has displayed absolutely no shame if he’s even willing to extend support to a fellow artist that venerates a mass murdering psychopath. Wow, just wow.

Most assailants were not young like the Boston Marathon bombers, but “were clustered most heavily between 30 and 49 years of age, although a surprising number were older than that,” it said. “This suggests that perpetrators spend many years on the radical right, absorbing extremist ideology, before finally acting out violently.”That summation strongly resembles Craig Stephen Hicks.
Yes, Hicks spent years absorbing the radical right, extremist ideology of Rachel Maddow, Neil deGrasse Tyson and SPLC.

I certainly agreed with this from the Salon article:
“The one thing we know is that the psychology has always been the same,” Joe Navarro, a former FBI agent and co-founder of the agency’s Behavioral Analysis Program, said in a Q&A in the SPLC report. “By that, I mean you have individuals who are collecting wounds, they’re looking for social ills, or things that have gone wrong, and they are nourishing these things that they’re ideating, that they’re thinking about. The solution for them is violence.”
“What they have in common is that once they begin to ideate this philosophy, whatever their passion is, whatever their hatred is, whatever their ideology is, they certainly all begin to communicate this to people around them,” Navarro said. “And when we go back and do the post-event analysis, we find that they were talking about this, they were telling people about this, and the people either ignored it, didn’t pay attention or didn’t think it would go any further.”
Basically, there’s far too many people out there with an unmitigated sense of grievance, and for far too many of them, their ‘solution’ is to resort to violence.

As a non-American, and not bound by any oaths, my take on this whole issue is at least partially different from that of a US citizen. The whole brouhaha about being a “traitor”, “stealing”, etc. leaves me cold. A big meh. I certainly welcome some of the revelations, even if they piss off many Americans.
That said, I can also see where this is not about principle. If you claim to only want to reveal the materials about abuses (like Manning did), then you don’t release the whole package and put people at risk. If you claim to care about the identities of those involved, you don’t share the materials with antisemitic sociopaths (as Assange did with Shamir, who then reportedly shared some of them with Lukashenko). If you claim to be for freedom etc., you don’t participate in staged interviews with dictators (Snowden). And of course there is the fact that this is all very one-sided. Where are all the Russian leaks, for starters? So while not being anti-leaks as such, I certainly don’t share any good feelings about that bunch of misfits.

An excerpt which goes a bit further than just the law and into our very essence as humans:
“In a world without faces, compassion is a practice that requires discipline, even imagination. Social media seems so easy; the whole point of its pleasure is its sense of casual familiarity. But we need a new art of conversation for the new conversations we are having — and the first rule of that art must be to remember that we are talking to human beings: “Never say anything online that you wouldn’t say to somebody’s face.” But also: “Don’t listen to what people wouldn’t say to your face.”
“The neurological research demonstrates that empathy, far from being an artificial construct of civilization, is integral to our biology. And when biological intersubjectivity disappears, when the face is removed from life, empathy and compassion can no longer be taken for granted.”

They put one boss in it that could not be beaten except by the most powerful weapons and even then it was a fifteen minute battle. The only time I got past it was when it got hung up on some scenery. I emptied all my magazines into it and I wouldn’t have won if I hadn’t been playing the Mechromancer. I had to wait a couple of more minutes for the robot to finish him off.
And then they threw in another one not long after. With no place to hide or hang it up.

“I have not. The fact is that we had every right to do what we did,” Boehner responded. “I wanted the prime minister to come here. There’s a serious threat facing the world. And radical Islamic terrorists are not going to go away.”
*snip*
Wallace then pointed out that Boehner asked Ron Dermer, Israel’s ambassador to the U.S., not to tell the White House about the joint meeting with Netanyahu.
“Why would you do that?” Wallace asked.
“Because I wanted to make sure that there was no interference. There’s no secret here in Washington about the animosity that this White House has for Prime Minister Netanyahu. I frankly didn’t want that getting in the way, quashing what I thought was a real opportunity,” Boehner responded.
If ever there was a good reason for Democrats to avoid this speech like the plague, Boehner has just given it to them. This is a Speaker’s temper tantrum over the State of the Union Address.

“Denmark’s Chief Rabbi, Jair Melchior, identified the Jewish victim as Dan Uzan, 37, a longtime security guard for the 7,000-strong community. He was guarding a building behind the synagogue during a bat mitzvah when he was shot in the head. Two police officers who were there were slightly wounded.
“Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decried the attack and said his government plans to encourage a “massive immigration” of Jews from Europe.

Tortures pigs? Okay…found that reference in the comments.
Jourdan Beers: Let’s not forget Christie vetoing Gestation Crates where pigs spend their entire, sad lives in dark, dank cages so small they can’t stand up or turn around. This is a brutal, inhumane way to treat sentient, intelligent creatures who feel the same basic emotions as we do. Christie vetoed this simple change that would better the lives of 10’s of millions of animals — to line his pocket and help out his buddies in the Corporate Agriculture and Factory Farming businesses, which not only cause immense suffering but also are a major component in climate change and ecological destruction.

Does Netanyahu underestimate European Jews or what? Shades of the Stern Gang.
First Copenhagen shooting victim identified as film maker
(snip)
“Denmark’s Chief Rabbi, Jair Melchior, identified the Jewish victim as Dan Uzan, 37, a longtime security guard for the 7,000-strong community. He was guarding a building behind the synagogue during a bat mitzvah when he was shot in the head. Two police officers who were there were slightly wounded.
“Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decried the attack and said his government plans to encourage a “massive immigration” of Jews from Europe.
“Again, Jews were murdered on European soil just because they were Jews,” Netanyahu said at the start of his Cabinet meeting Sunday. “This wave of attacks is expected to continue, as well as murderous anti-Semitic attacks. Jews deserve security in every country, but we say to our Jewish brothers and sisters, Israel is your home.” More
That plays right into the hands of the anti-Semite nationalists. Netanyahu is implying that all these people are Jews first and citizens of whatever country second.

Yemen’s Jews eye exodus after Houthi takeover
A couple of things in the article stood out for me:
Israel-linked organisations have in the past repeatedly helped whisk Jews out of Yemen, but Israeli government officials declined comment on the matter, citing reluctance to endanger Yemen’s Jews by association with Israel.
“There are certainly discussions going on over options available regarding the Yemenite Jews,” said an Israeli official briefed on immigration matters.
But these are individuals who will have to make their own individual decisions about what to do,” the official added.
How ironic that this concern didn’t apply when it comes to Europe’s Jews. But the next tidbit may explain the possible lack of concern by Bibi:
Safety may not be the only concern for the deeply conservative community though, who fear life in Israel or elsewhere will be an affront to their traditional values.
“In Israel, the girls rebel against their fathers, and we fear for our daughters. I could not accept that my daughter might come to me one day and tell me that she was married to her boyfriend,” Rabbi Yahya said.
“This is not permissible in our religion.”
Perhaps deeply conservative Jews from south of the Arabian Peninsula aren’t useful for Bibi’s political ambitions in the following month?
