I’m sorry, is the communist flag being flown over a state capital somewhere I’m not aware of?

No, but Sarah Palin can see it from her house in Alaska.///

The Stone Mountain flag rally goes on until 11 PM, well after dark. That’s some really good park management, there. What are the odds a cross gets burned on top of that rock?

Just for the fun of starting a Saturday night free-for-all, via Wonkette’s Saturday Nerdout:

Batman is a choad.

My favorite paragraph:

*Let us now pause for a moment to marvel at the political stupidity of this. Miller had the Randian Reagan government throwing itself behind an adopted undocumented alien immigrant newspaper journalist, against a trust-fund billionaire industrialist vigilante who’d just squashed city-wide riots by rallying a bunch of angry white teen boys to beat the shit out of poor people with no help from the government. Why did anyone ever think Frank Miller isn’t a goddamn moron?

This is the most Texas thing to ever happen.

A Texas man was hospitalized this week, after being hit in the head by a ricocheting bullet he had aimed at an armadillo.

OT, unless you want to say it fits in with the cat-print tiles above.

Our copy of Exploding Kittens arrived today, complete with the Secret Surprise in the lid of the game box. Kickstarter game by Elan Lee & The Oatmeal, which they promised to ship in July and by gum they shipped it in July. My gamer son chortled like a loon when he opened it up and started reading the cards. Mind you, he hasn’t shown me the NSFW deck yet — I will probably get some Bad Mama Points for ordering this for him, especially if he leaves the cards out where MY mother can see them.

But he’s a happy little camper tonight!

Morning!

So, it appears Cincinnati U cop Ray Tensing has had some history of pulling people over and being dickish about why he pulled them over and goading them into something he can arrest them for.

Here is an NBC story that came out late yesterday. Apparently people are going through their closets now that they know him. The video is quite long but in a way the length and the way it proceeds is the interesting part. It is actually creepy. I’d be scared of him.

NBC News - Officer Charged With DuBose Killing Appears to Be Seen in Heated 2014 Stop

- - CUT- -

Demetrius Pace, 27, told NBC News that he was the passenger who filmed the heated May 2014 stop, which was set off by the car’s dragging bumper.

The officer asks Pace and the driver, Sexton Henley, if they have been in an accident. They say no, and then the officer asks Pace to identify himself.

Pace says his first name and refuses to give his birthday, citing his “rights.”

Under Ohio law, a police officer can ask for identification of anyone who is suspected of committing a crime or witnessing a felony offense.

The officer then asks Pace to step out of the car. He refuses and asks what the charge is, leading the officer to ask: “Why do you keep interrupting me?”

The two men in the car request a supervisor, and the officer tersely responds, “Just because you ask means I have to provide it to you?”

The officer then tells the men they will receive a citation for an “equipment violation.” But it isn’t immediately issued and the men are told they are being detained.

When a supervisor does arrive, the officers who originally made the stop say very little.

Pace described the interaction as “a bad experience” and said the officer was “antsy.” He also said he regrets not getting the officers’ information to file a complaint after the stop.

“I feel like anytime I have an interaction with a cop, it could be my last day,” Pace said. “I should not feel like that.”

Which is one of the most revealing anti-democratic traits of the wingnut Right.

The right to assemble peacefully is a central principle of democracy. By destroying unions Walker, Reagan and the rest of the wingnuts show they have no liking for that right.

All I can think of is Tensing is a power monger and just likes to be a bad cop. Pretty strange that he has the attitude he has and at a young age. I guess I always thought a cop could turn bad from years of dealing with bad people and start to think everyone is bad. Tensing seems to come pre-loaded with attitude.

People pre-loaded with that attitude may gravitate to jobs like policing. I would expect a lot of authoritarians to be in the police force.

Dash cams and this app, free from the ACLU. I promise you it is on both our cell phones here at RWC HQ.

Almost all cell phones come with video cameras, but Police Tape has a “stealth mode” that makes the app disappear from the screen once the recording starts, to minimize the chances the police might squelch the recording.

There is also a mode for audio recording, a link to a page explaining a citizen’s legal rights, and a way to send the video directly to the ACLU for backup storage and analysis of possible civil liberties violations, according to the Los Angeles Times.

b_sharp  Aug 2, 2015 • 8:41:26am

Since those assholes smashed the ignition on my Cherokee I’ve been unable to start it and it’s been sitting on the street for more than a month so yesterday I decided to tow it up on to the driveway where I can legally work on it. I hooked up my tow rope to the hitch on the Cherokee and the other end to the hitch on the Subaru & got the wife to drive the Subaru.

Stupidly I just set the hooks into the chain loops knowing full well they could pop out and hurtle toward either vehicle and smash out a window. Meh. As V started pulling the jeep moved about 3 feet and I heard/felt this huge snap. Crap! I expected to get out of the jeep and see the hook embedded in the Subaru’s back window.

I don’t get to say very often “I’m glad the rope broke” but I got to say it yesterday.

Sometimes taking stupid chances doesn’t result in your worst expectations so what does happen looks not too bad.

Already seeing some things I did not know about The Donald™. One surprise, thought it shouldn’t be, Roy Cohen was his father’s lawyer and an adviser for a 28-year-old Donald when he really started to make his power moves. That says a lot.

Only watched 20 minutes so far, but already pretty clear TRUMP will say and do anything to get what he wants. And of course…using other people’s money. Which makes me think The Donald wants some of that US Tax Payer Money to do some ‘projects’ that most likely help The TRUMP!

Sam Nunberg, a Trump political adviser, allegedly wrote racially-charged and disparaging political posts dating back to 2007, including one calling civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton’s daughter a “N—!” and another calling President Barack Obama a “Socialist Marxist Islamo Fascist Nazi Appeaser,” Business Insider reported Friday. Nunberg is denying he wrote the posts.

Campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told CNN on Friday that the posts are “offensive” and said Nunberg would be fired if he indeed wrote those posts.

“They were offensive and they do not reflect Mr. Trump’s position and we take them very seriously,” he said. “If it determined that Mr. Nunberg made these statements then he will no longer be part of the campaign.”

He is a handsome devil. I had aquariums for many years back when I had an actual house, including an 80 gallon set up we got for our monster Oscars, Seek and Destroy. Loved those guys. Missed them terribly. When I saw this cute little aquarium that would fit perfectly in my motorhome, I snatched it right up.

Shoot. I forgot TRUMP was going to be on Meet The Todd. I wanted to see how softly Chuckles was going to dance around The Donald™. Anyone get to see it? I did manage to see about the last 7 minutes and when I tuned in ol’ Doc Carson was on and had just been asked a question from an NBC Facebook user.

The question was something like what is more important in your decision making, The Bible or the U.S. Constitution? Carson sorta cringed about Todd calling it a simple question and then did a nifty move of not wanting to answer by saying it depended on what part of the Constitution and what part of the Bible. Clearly Ben didn’t want to offend any fundie types. He needs them to stay alive and keep the grift and sham going.

My wife, a friend and I tried to reinvent the equipment ‘cause so much of it was so poorly designed. Got two Magnum cartridge filters. Ditched the factory pumps and replaced then with a double ended pump that was originally made for film developing labs that circulate different chemical at the same time. Made the heater inline instead of ugly in the tank. Made the gravel filter out of screened pvc pipe so the bottom glass could still be vacuumed. All the stuff worked great but nobody had any commercial interest. So I just gave away the designs to other folks.

Several news organizations gained rare access Saturday into a private gathering of influential Republican donors hosted by Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, a nonprofit organization backed by conservative billionaires Charles and David Koch.

But journalists covering the three-day event, held at a luxurious California resort, had to agree to an unusual restriction. They weren’t allowed to report the names of any of the 450 donors attending without the individual’s permission.

Sad news:

A 16-year-old girl who was stabbed during Jerusalem’s Gay Pride Parade on Thursday died Sunday after succumbing to her wounds, hospital officials said.

Shira Banki had been hospitalized at Ein Karem in the capital in serious condition following the attack, in which five other people were stabbed as well.

One other person, Yarden Noy, was injured critically in the stabbing but has since recovered and is set to be released from the hospital in the coming days.

As for the attacker:

[Yishai] Schlissel carried out the attack three weeks after he was released from prison after serving a 10-year sentence for perpetrating an identical crime a decade ago.

Schlissel, an ultra-Orthodox Jew, was found fit to stand trial on Friday, although he refused legal counsel, saying he did not recognize the legal standing of the court since it did not abide by Jewish law.

Schlissel was unrepentant after an attack in 2005 in which he stabbed and wounded three people and said he was on a mission from God.

The great majority of reporters are corporate employees who do the job the corporation wants done.

“Ticking Freedom Partners off” should not be a concern of a news organization. Pedantically explaining the employment situation of the individual reporters does not forgive the breach of standards that “journalists” should be employing in covering “news.”

While journalism occupies a much smaller space than the talk, entertainment, opinion, assertion, advertising and propaganda that dominate the media universe, it is nevertheless perceived as being more valuable than most of the “stuff out there.”

That value flows from its purpose, to provide people with verified information they can use to make better decisions, and its practices, the most important of which is a systematic process - a discipline of verification - that journalists use to find not just the facts, but also the “truth about the facts.”

The journalist places the public good above all else

That’s not the only change - I saw this earlier today from Al Arabiya:

Israel intends to detain without trial citizens suspected of political violence against Palestinians, government officials said on Sunday following a lethal West Bank arson attack blamed on Jewish militants.

The extension to Israelis of so-called “administration detention”, a practice commonly applied to Palestinian militant suspects and condemned internationally, laid bare authorities’ frustration at failing to curb Jewish ultra-nationalist attacks.

Friday’s torching of a Palestinian home killed a toddler and seriously hurt his parents and brother, causing an outcry abroad and vows by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to crack down on what he deemed “terrorism” by “criminals in our nation”.

Blind Frog Belly White  Aug 2, 2015 • 10:25:26am

Mo reminds me of all our aquatic pets and the lengths we’ve gone to for them. We had a little Red Eared Slider we bought because the younger boy really likes turtles. Most pet shops used to sell them, but they have NO IDEA what they need. So Mrs. FBW looked into it.

Next thing you know, we’ve got a really big tank, with a big-ass filter/pump. Then a friend has a Red Eared Slider they want to get rid of. Now we have two. The started out maybe 3 or so inches long (carapace length). Well, they just keep getting bigger. Now they’re easily 8 inches long.

We were going to build a pond for them in the back yard. I was carefully designing an enclosure that would keep them safe from Rackety-Coons. Mrs. FBW had the Boys start digging a hole for it. Then I looked into the requirements - you need a HUGE-ass filter/pump. So, we still have a hole…..

Then a teacher friend had the turtle she’d bought for a class pet. The new turtle ended up with the old tank and the Sliders got a new, bigger tank.

Earlier this year, Mrs. FBW buys a Betta. Calls him Fin, because he’s missing one. Starts him out in a large glass vase we had. Then she looks into it. Now he’s in an aquarium on her desk, with a filter/pump.

There’s always the sound of pumps running, the babble of the water from the output splashing into the tank, the *clonk* as the turtles dive off the dock, or haul themselves up onto it. And of course, we need to periodically clean the accumulated crud and turtle scutes out of the filters. Yeesh.

Edited to clarify antecedents.

I’d recommend getting a graduated ND filter like this. It allows you to be much more selective and will give more control over the scene.

Quite so, just recently exploring the whole ND concept. Graduated will be nice to have and also some much stronger grades. Looking to do some very long daylight exposures. Not so much sky in those for what I’m working on lately. I’m getting access to a bunch of filters made for cinema lenses which of course have a whole bigger size and mounting hardware. Probably going to cut to fit the cokin frames unless I find something better. I think I’ll get two filters out of each one. These are lightly damaged rejects so it depends on exactly what happened to them.

Kicking myself for not looking into this method long ago. EDIT-Maybe Lee has a better mount?

Of course they want to bankrupt PP. What I hear coming from non-firebreathing Conservatives these days is that the services PP has always provided can be provided by County health departments etc, and they should fund THEM rather than PP. And the next thing will be that counties run by wingnuts will cut back on the womens’ health services, and contraceptive services, putting poor and working class women back under the thumb.

It’s like the apparently successful campaign to convince Americans that we don’t need unions anymore. So union membership falls, the number of union shops falls. And wages and benefits fall.

Yep. The use of the basic ND was pretty good, but the graduated ones give just that much more flexibility. Polarizing filters are great tools as well as RWC found.

I must say, though, that I don’t miss calculating bellows and filter factors, especially when the exposure gets long enough to be into reciprocity failure. I like sticking to nice bright light when I do break out the 4x5 any more.

Good afternoon Lizards.

Quiet day so far today after using yesterday to catch up on errands and also cooking dinner and having having neighbors over to share in eating it.

Did a “Moroccan Rub” on a few pork tenderloins that I then cooked in a crock pot with a pile of root vegetables (potato, parsnip, carrot) and topped with lightly browned onions and the contents of the deglazed skillet. Served it with a simple cheese risotto and a fennel-celery salad. Had a apple pie* for dessert that I had baked Friday night.

The pork came out alright. I would have preferred a stronger impact from the dry rub, so next time I will probably go more cajun with the seasoning and try to get a bit more kick. The vegetables were good as well, but the risotto was the star of the show. I used chicken stock I’d made from a chicken carcass from last week and also some very good 18-month parmesan cheese. And I hit the desired consistency dead on.

Served it with a couple of bottles of white wine from my Virginia trip. Decent stuff, but not spectacular.

* - Apple pie with a cup of dried cherries macerated in Benedictine added in that is.
