It’s beyond me how the following action isn’t sanctionable as to the attorneys:
Before taking office as County Clerk in January 2015, Davis swore an oath to
support the constitutions and laws of the United States and the Commonwealth of Kentucky “so help me God.” Davis understood (and understands) this oath to mean that, in upholding the federal and state constitutions and laws, she would not act in contradiction to the moral law of God, natural law, or her sincerely held religious beliefs and convictions. Davis also understood (and understands) the constitution and laws she swore to uphold to incorporate the constitutional and other legal protections of all individuals’ rights to live and work according to their consciences, as informed by their sincerely held religious beliefs and convictions, including without limitation such rights she holds in her own individual capacity.
There is no, zero, none, nada, nein, etc. etc. legal basis for that tripe. I also don’t give a fuck what post facto spin she is now applying to her oath—no way did she understand her oath to mean “I will uphold the US/State Constitution unless it contradicts God’s law.”

Her beliefs are what she needs at the moment to get by. They are no deeper than that.
I call these the “pocket Jesus” types that pull out their religion to use as needed. The rest of the time, just like a little notebook, pocket Jesus stays in their pocket until needed again. In the meantime, they can be as horrible as they want to be with no problems because they have pocket Jesus.

Kim Davis said that people could just drive to another county to get married.
gaaahhhhhhhhh
County clerks in Kentucky also record deeds, mortgage records, liens, wills, name changes, and issue and record vehicle transfers and license.
Kim Davis could, using her logic, refuse those services to people as well.

The local police chief had earlier said that Hammond was “not shot from behind.”
Noting that Hammond’s death has received little in the way of national coverage, Bland said in a statement Wednesday that even though both Hammond and the officer were white, the matter should be “investigated and reported by the press with the same tenacity and thoroughness” that have been applied to other, higher-profile police killings involving white officers and black victims.

Self Appointed Pundits Like To Imagine They Influence The Presidential Race
It’s also possible that this debate kicks off the “scrutiny” phase of Trump’s candidacy. According to Sides and Vavreck, scrutiny happens after the candidate has had some time atop the polls and journalists decide to really dig into their public record and personal history. Right now Trump is firmly in the discovery phase of his candidacy. The media are still treating him as more of a celebrity than a candidate, so his policy positions and his past are getting less attention than his performance in the latest poll or his most recent bombastic statement. If the media and party establishment begin to scrutinize Trump in the way they would any other politician, it may lead to bad press and a related drop in his poll numbers - the beginning of the “decline” in Sides and Vavreck’s process.</>

Prosecutors believed Scott Walker committed a felony while county executive
Prosecutors believed Gov. Scott Walker committed a felony when he served as Milwaukee County Executive for his role in negotiating a lease extension for county office space and a cleaning service contract, a Wednesday court filing shows.
Walker was never charged with a crime, and has long said he was never a target of the 2011 John Doe investigation into his county office.
On Wednesday prosecutors filed into the court record a 2011 request for a search warrant that was part of the investigation. The Wednesday filing in federal court came in response to a lawsuit brought against the prosecutors, including Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm assistant district attorneys Bruce Landgraf and David Robles, by Walker aide Cindy Archer, who also was under investigation.
re: #166 Backwoods_Sleuth
Ahem, excuse me but a lot of that article is way overstated, or cherry picking certain bad actors in the sport. Blithely comparing an 8 year old with a full auto uzi as any child shooting program is simply unjust. See Boy Scouts etc. Careful instructors, .22 caliber single fire. And right no criminal bg to rent a gun, as it’s not going home or anywhere else with them. That kinda reduces the threat about 99.99%. You should see the rules at good gun ranges, links avail.
And despite the misleading text all the rules that exist on the outside, besides the permitted activities are still in full effect. If you are a felon you are not allowed to shoot at the range either. The range is not a gun law free zone.
It’s a shame as a better article might not broad brush, might point to specific safety successes and how those need to be carried to places that lack them. If that were any other forum I’d take it to the author, but I’d just be dismissed as a troll or gun nut. From the authors subtitle it’s insane to have gun ranges at all. I call bullshit.

Honest to god, I think that wingnuts have an actual mental block that prevents them thinking of any larger number of people than 1. When you tell them about how many people are uninsured, they say, “They should get better jobs that have insurance!”
Then you ask them if there are enough better jobs for all the people who want them, and they say, “Anyone can get a better job!”
You ask them if EVERYone can get a better job, and they say they just said ANYone can get a better job.
It’s like it is beyond their reasoning capacity to understand that EVERYONE can’t get a job paying above median wage, and that if EVERYONE went to school and studied hard, we wouldn’t have everyone working middle class jobs. We’d have a lot of janitors and burger flippers with Bachelors degrees.

re: #218 Higgs Boson’s Mate
I read somewhere that Vegas has been buying up water rights in the surrounding area for years.
When they can’t buy them, they just try to take the water anyway. They’ve been trying to get at the Spring Valley (so named because there are a lot of springs there) aquifer for about 2 decades. So far without success, although they did get the Nevada attorney general to OK a water grab. Unfortunately for Las Vegas, while Spring Valley is in a very lightly populated area (the next valley west from Great Basin National Park, which is truly and delightfully in the middle of nowhere) the aquifer extends into Utah, which was not amused at the water grab. Also, the largest ranch in Spring Valley is owned by the LDS church (to the extent that despite being in the Pacific time zone, the locals are apparently on Mountain Time to match Salt Lake City.) Apparently the Mormons weren’t particularly amused by the attempted water grab either.
Las Vegas’s (which translates to “The Meadows”) original water supply was its own springs, but they don’t want to draw their own aquifer down too much.

Be warned, they will turn off without notice. Before, it was when you closed your browser and reopened it, the background would be gone. Now, it just disappears when it wants.

Arrggh—it took me almost an hour to make that one from a “Clown Bingo” template (graphics are not my strength—had to put text boxes over each of the numbers in the original, then get rid of the text box borders, then create a jpeg image, then crop it.) I would need mass quantities of amber-colored liquids before I tackled any revisions—then I’d be too drunk to proceed.
Such a dilemma!

We have no earthly idea what this image is supposed to mean. We found it Tuesday in the replies to Fox & Friends’ tweet about their weird shouty discussion panel on why Donald Trump is the bestest/worstest candidate ever. It’s the work of one Dave White, who is definitely not a fan of liberals, socialists, Barack Obama, or the enemies of America.

Been back from my Alaska cruise for about 48 hours now. Still getting used to new look here (I succeeded in staying mostly off the internets for over a week!). I miss the top/bottom 10 lists and hope they come back…or someone can direct me where to find them.
Cruise was good, only made it to the southeast (aka Alaska panhandle) but some ridiculously awesome scenery up there. The weather is always dicey, but we did see the sun a bit. The worst part is that each port is surrounded by two blocks of jewelry and souvenir stores that are wholly or partially owned by the cruise lines. They are truly an eyesore that don’t even provide much in the way of local jobs…a lot of the people working there run similar shops around the Caribbean all winter.
Glad to report that my health held up and I am only slightly worse for the wear since coming home.

Breaking Bad spoiler:
The did kill a kid in Breaking Bad. I’ll admit I was particularly repulsed by that scene, I actually got up, threw my hands in the air and said “Fuckin’ Bullshit!” the first time I saw it. It’s a shocking scene. The writers handled that plot twist rather well in subsequent episodes.
I still think Breaking Bad is the best serial TV show ever made.
re: #342 teleskiguy
There was a magazine I saw at a book store.
The top shows in history, in order, were
1: Breaking Bad
2: Game of Thrones
3: Mad Men
4: The Wire
5: Doctor Who.
Considering the effusive praise I have heard from people who work on Doctor Who for Breaking Bad, I have to agree with that.

Don’t ‘cha know, every time I go out to San Francisco to visit friends, I feel like I just stepped out of that movie. It’s pretty pronounced when I get out of MN.
re: #343 The War TARDIS
Here’s what I think of Breaking Bad. Shakespearian in scope.
I’ll never forget the first time I saw the first episode, just a few weeks after it had aired, what, seven years ago now! A friend had saved it on DVR and he showed all his friends (including me) Breaking Bad every chance he could. Because my friend knows good shit when he sees it, and Breaking Bad was something completely different.
I said these two phrases over and over again the first time I saw Breaking Bad: “That’s the dude from Malcolm In The Middle, no fucking way!” and “This is on cable TV that’s not HBO? How’d they do that?” or something to that effect.
Gripping television. The apex of the serial television era.

The commercial for the run-up to the last couple of episodes, where Cranston reads Shelley’s “Ozymandias”, is just about the perfect summation of the series:
