Incredible Hubble Space Telescope Image: The Twin Jet Nebula

A cosmic light show
Science • Views: 72,231

Here’s a brand new image from the Hubble Space Telescope of an amazing cosmic butterfly; the jets of multicolored material you see here are being ejected from the star system at more than one million kilometers per hour.

The cosmic butterfly pictured in this NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image goes by many names. It is called the Twin Jet Nebula as well as answering to the slightly less poetic name of PN M2-9.

The M in this name refers to Rudolph Minkowski, a German-American astronomer who discovered the nebula in 1947. The PN, meanwhile, refers to the fact that M2-9 is a planetary nebula. The glowing and expanding shells of gas clearly visible in this image represent the final stages of life for an old star of low to intermediate mass. The star has not only ejected its outer layers, but the exposed remnant core is now illuminating these layers — resulting in a spectacular light show. However, the Twin Jet Nebula is not just any planetary nebula, it is a bipolar nebula.

Ordinary planetary nebulae have one star at their center, bipolar nebulae have two, in a binary star system. Astronomers have found that the two stars in this pair each have around the same mass as the sun, ranging from 0.6 to 1.0 solar masses for the smaller star, and from 1.0 to 1.4 solar masses for its larger companion. The larger star is approaching the end of its days and has already ejected its outer layers of gas into space, whereas its partner is further evolved, and is a small white dwarf.

The characteristic shape of the wings of the Twin Jet Nebula is most likely caused by the motion of the two central stars around each other. It is believed that as the dying star and white dwarf orbit around their common center of mass, the ejected gas from the dying star is pulled into two lobes rather than expanding as a uniform sphere. However, astronomers are still debating whether all bipolar nebulae are created by binary stars. Meanwhile the nebula’s wings are still growing and, by measuring their expansion, astronomers have calculated that the nebula was created only 1,200 years ago.

The Real Fireworks Are About To Begin

Republican front-runner Donald Trump began to flesh out his economic vision for America, and it includes raising taxes on the wealthy.

Trump went on to complain that multi-millionaires are currently “paying very little tax and I think it’s outrageous.” After stressing his support for middle-class tax breaks - the Republican candidate has not yet outlined any specifics - Trump added, “I know people in hedge funds that pay almost nothing and it’s ridiculous, OK?”

Oooh boy.

Here’s the tantalizing thing. What if this breaks the Trickle Down meme that has infested the right for so long? Yeah, we won’t see the GOP break into two parties, but what if this allows for a slightly more moderate or dare I say, sane, fiscal stance to gain traction with them?

And here we go again with this nonsense?

Voter rolls get periodically purged so that duplicates, deceased, and otherwise invalid names are removed.

It does not mean voter fraud has or will occur there.

For the record, after researchers actually looked for voter fraud, in more than 1 billion votes, they came up with a grand total of 31 instances where fraud may have occurred. Not even actual convictions, just possible instances.

Voter ID deprives far more than that of their right to vote - people who are legally entitled to but are otherwise incapable because they lack ID or other means to secure their right to vote. Of course, it disproportionately affects the poor, minorities, and therefore is part of a tactic to attack minority voting, so of course the right wing supports this without reservation.

There’s also precedent. Republicans have tried to channel the populist message in the past but they keep getting held back from going full-on for the white working class by their corporate paymasters.

Trump, obviously, doesn’t have to play that game. And it seems as though Fox’s steady attempts to undermine him aren’t having much of an effect so far, so it will be interesting to see what else the 1% can do to bring him down.

Just hours away? Nope. Based on the statistics, there’s a homicide every 45 minutes. There’s more than 2 suicides by firearms every hour.

In other words, there are three firearms fatalities every hour of every day, around the clock year round.

So by NRA thinking, it’s never a good time to talk about firearms control.

My feelings on Trump is that this is no accident. Everything he says and does is (more likely than not) scripted based on internal polling and a carefully crafted game plan. If he goes populist (at least as far as taxation goes) then they believe (and have the polling to back it up) that it will help him.

I mean, just look at his past stance on abortion and how he has identified more with Democrats in the past. He’s patching together a platform that resonates with a lot of (whacked out) people. He is, essentially, Frankenstein.

Just expecting the party’s leaders, i.e. the talk radio circuit, the think tanks funded by Koch, to start sounding the alarm about Trump’s lack of fealty to the Cause.

Not seeing it yet. But expecting it sooner or later.

Citizens United and the gutting of McCain-Feingold took the purse strings out of the hands of the party’s leaders. Trump is inoculated against attempts to question his bona fides because any concerted attempt to knock him out of the running will vindicate his followers’ darkest suspicions about the party itself.

Notice that every time Trump utters a definitive statement about, well, anything, there’s never anything actually there to analyze. He thinks if he says it, it will happen.

That’s not how it works. That’s not how any of this works.

You want to say how you’ll do better, that’s fine - but enlighten us how you’ll do it.

Seeing how the GOP - the party you’ve chosen to run with - is opposed to women’s health, access to abortions and birth control, and equal rights, you’ve got to do and say more than just that you’ll do better than Hillary.

It seemed some of the LGFers didn’t remember Mr. Shearer, and then it became clear that he was the voice on some of The Simpsons characters. Good…to a point.

But!

How could anyone forget Derek Smalls…the iconic bass player in Spinal Tap?!!!

He has also been in other Chris Guest movies like A Mighty Wind. Probably a hundred bit parts in many a major movie (check out his wiki page…you’ve seen him a lot).

And for the longest time, he had a nice little LeShow on NPR radio.

He actually got his start with the help of voice specialist Mel Blanc.

Wait. What? This ex-cop killed six people while on the job, forced the city of Scottsdale to pay out millions in settlements to families of the victims, and yet he somehow managed to never spend a single day in jail.

He’s now working for a company that produces cop simulators.

Down and Drought has learned that VirTra Systems, Inc., a Tempe company that produces a shooting simulator used for law enforcement and military training, employs former Scottsdale police officer James Peters who resigned from the department amid controversy in 2012 following revelations that he had tallied six fatal shootings during his twelve year career [emphasis added].

James Peters was cleared in his final fatal shooting, that of John Loxas, an unarmed man carrying his grandchild when Peters shot and killed him. The incident ignited anti-police protests and debate around this officer who had killed so many, and resulted in the city paying out a $4.25 million dollar settlement to the Loxas family. In the summer of 2012, Peters took an early retirement from the city, and effectively dropped out of sight. But while he was no longer a police officer he continued to work alongside law enforcement in the private sector.

This ex-cop should have been subjected to scrutiny after the first killing, or the second or third, but somehow managed to remain on active duty up through the sixth killing.

The kicker? This guy is collecting a disability pension from the city.

Ben Carson: There a ‘war on what’s inside of women, but not a war on women’

good freaking grief:

“They tell you that there’s a war on women,” he said. “There is no war on women. There may be a war on what’s inside of women, but there is no war on women in this country.”

Carson argued that Americans should realize that “we are all in the same boat” instead of focusing on racism and sexism.

The candidate pointed to immigrants who came through Ellis Island and “worked, not five days a week but six days or seven days. Not eight hours a day, but 10, 12 hours day. No such thing as a minimum wage.”

“But they worked not for themselves but so that their sons and daughters and their grandsons and granddaughters might have an opportunity in this land,” he explained. “And hundreds of years before that, other immigrants came here involuntarily in the bottom of slave ships, worked even longer, even harder for less.”

Is he backing that up with any easily obtainable statistics on crime rates per parish?

NO

Someone did point out that homicide trends are actually on the downswing, but the biggest reductions in crime violence have been in urban centers, like NYC.

More stats, including that the Southeast, which has the most lax gun laws (and also highest prevalence of death penalty impositions), has highest murder rate of any region.

Most dangerous counties in nation?

Darlington SC? And a bunch of suburban counties.

specifically, the war on things inside of women would be on their reproductive organs. because again, just as puritanism is the fear that someone somewhere is happy, christian fundamentalism is the fear that someone somewhere is having (and worse, enjoying) sex.

Still, who the heck waits until the 5-8th videos to show real wrongdoing? You put your best stuff up first. And so far, there’s still nothing illegal shown. Not a single thing.

Fetal tissue donations = legal
Reimbursement for costs relating to fetal tissue donation = legal
Abortion = legal.

But remixing a bunch of interviews with a handful of people who aren’t even employees of PP somehow means PP is doing something illegal?

And the state investigations so far have found no criminality. None. A few suspect paper violations in Florida is it. No sales of fetal tissue. Nothing of the sort. Nothing like what they’re claiming on those videos.

It’s as though the anti choice extremists invented and cobbled together with real weak tea a claim that simply isn’t supportable on scrutiny - close or otherwise.

We all know that CMP is full of shit and is holding nothing but their dicks in their hands, but that doesn’t stop them from trying to do with PP what O’Keefe succeeded with with ACORN: to win in the court of public opinion and to use that as leverage to win in state legislatures and on Capital Hill at getting PP’s funds cut.

The GOP has really screwed the pooch on the economy—they used to be better at it than this. Traditionally, they would have let Obama do whatever he could to correct the Global economic crash they brought on, and by 2012 we’d be ready for another recession they could blame on the Democrats. Instead they managed to dig their heels in and delay the recovery long enough that the Democrats will get the credit for it 8 years later.

Not sure if the Dems have anyone in particular in mind, though I’ve seen a few names floated as possibilities.

I was in the car a couple hours ago listening to NPR and there was a story on about how the right to life asshats are dumpster diving behind women’s clinics and looking for medical records and paperwork and using that to file lawsuits in the name of protecting patient privacy. Another trick is to call 9/11 when ambulances are called to transport patients from clinic to hospitals to report criminal activity. These groups also seem to have insiders in hospitals that let them know if women die after visiting clinics and then publish their names and pictures online, even if the family objects.

These people are monsters

The martyrdom is strong with this one:

Davis said he should be allowed defy the law because divine laws “supersede” American law. Davis added, “God’s placed me here so that I can tell people, ‘Hey there is a higher power that we need to answer to, and it’s not people who wear black robes, it’s the one that wears the white robe.’”

“If it takes it, I will go to jail over — if it takes my life, I will die for because I believe I owe that to the people that fought so I can have the freedom that I have, I owe that to them today, and you do, we all do,” the defiant clerk said.

Death (or even jail) is a bit much, but if you refuse to do your damn job and treat all equally under the law, I have no problems with you losing your job, you fucking Bible-thumping putz.

Wow! I could get lost just looking at the plants…and the rocks.

He does a nice job with the pictures too. A lot of people would never take some of these shots. I like the melting ice/snow opened to the creek below…with the mud and dirt in the ice and snow. A lot of people would never see the beauty in that.

I like to do that here at the cool parks in Ohio. Take some time just to stop and look at all the little stuff growing on the ground and on the trees. Little tiny mosses with small frail flowers…all like a little mini world itself.

One of my earliest dogs had the same allergy to honeybees. His face would swell up just like that.
One of my current dogs (the big goofy coonhound) eats bumblebees all the time with no problem.

We almost lost our pet beagle to a bee sting. We saw her struggling to breathe like she was choking and whisked her to the vet. He looked for a foreign object causing an obstruction and eventually found a stinger in her tongue. Her tongue had swollen up causing her difficulty in breathing. Apparently she had snapped at a bee and it fought back.
