New York Times Front Page Editorial: End the Gun Epidemic in America

The United States is not trying
Politics • Views: 50,516

Right wing heads all across America are exploding in rage as the New York Times says what needs to be said, in a historically rare front page editorial: End the Gun Epidemic in America.

Opponents of gun control are saying, as they do after every killing, that no law can unfailingly forestall a specific criminal. That is true. They are talking, many with sincerity, about the constitutional challenges to effective gun regulation. Those challenges exist. They point out that determined killers obtained weapons illegally in places like France, England and Norway that have strict gun laws. Yes, they did.

But at least those countries are trying. The United States is not. Worse, politicians abet would-be killers by creating gun markets for them, and voters allow those politicians to keep their jobs. It is past time to stop talking about halting the spread of firearms, and instead to reduce their number drastically — eliminating some large categories of weapons and ammunition.

It is not necessary to debate the peculiar wording of the Second Amendment. No right is unlimited and immune from reasonable regulation.

UPDATE at 12/5/15 10:54:40 am by Charles Johnson

RedState head case Erick Erickson became so enraged he yanked out his massive weapon and shot his newspaper.

Between this op-ed and the one-two punch of those Daily News front pages, it seems that there still may be some fight left in our ‘liberal media.’

One can only hope more follow in their footsteps. This madness must end.

Once again, my eloquence is wasted on a dying thread. So here it is again, regarding Erickson and his guns…

They give him a false sense of security in a world he can’t control. Having a gun won’t ensure you won’t lose your job, or that you won’t get into an car accident, or that your wife won’t leave you, or that your friends won’t figure out you’re an asshole, or that you’ll have enough money to live on when you retire, or that you’ll even be able to get a job if you don’t.

Life is uncertainty. Conservatives can’t handle uncertainty. Anxious minds look for a focus, some single cause of their anxiety, which they can then do something about. The gun makes them think they can take out the source. But after they get one, they find it’s not enough. So they want a bigger one, and more ammo. But that only makes them feel better for a little, so they want even more and even bigger guns.

Really, it’s much the same as any other hoarder - they acquire things to give them a sense of control that those things can’t really give them.

Actual online discussion I had yesterday with a gun nut:

Them: Americans need to be armed to defend themselves against the government!

Me: What possible challenge would a bunch of yahoos with AR-15s pose to the same government that spends more than the next dozen countries COMBINED on the military?

Them:A bunch of yahoos with muskets and rifles overthrew the British government!

Me: You realize that we had help from the French, right? And that Spain declared war on England at the same time to divide their resources and to take advantage of the British being at war here?

Them:All the French did was donate a few guns! We overthrew a tyrant with a small number of fighters!

Me: Ok. So how would you beat the U.S. government? You’re not going to be anywhere close to a match. They’ve got a navy, fighter jets, tanks, etc.

Them:Asymmetric warfare!

Me: How’s that been working out in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Them:Why do you hate America, libtard?

In my opinion, it’s more than just the easy availability of guns. It’s this whole culture that we’ve bred of the “noble gunowner”, the romanticizing of the Old West stereotypes, the redefinition of masculinity to include brutal anger and heavy firepower. Sure, we can take the guns off the streets, but we also need to solve the heart issues of people who think flying off the handle and shooting someone is a perfectly acceptable way to end a confrontation.

So yeah I see gun advocates accuse gun control advocates of being out of touch and to which I have to say screw you. These people don’t know what it’s like to get that call. And I’ll add something a little more public but I had a lot of friends and a cousin at Virginia Tech when that shooting happened too. I didn’t care about the specific type of gun that was used. All I knew is some asshole branished a gun on people on a college campus. So yeah I think 2nd amendment absolutists can go fuck themselves with how little regard they have for people who lose friends and family due to gun violence.

My sister who lives three miles from the WI standoff has this on her facebook page. It’s a paragraph written by Adam Gopnic for the New Yorker after the Virginia Tech shooting:

“The cell phones in the pockets of the dead students were still ringing when we were told that it was wrong to ask why. As the police cleared the bodies from the Virginia Tech engineering building, the cell phones rang, in the eccentric varieties of ring tones, as parents kept trying to see if their children were OK. To imagine the feelings of the police as they carried the bodies and heard the ringing is heartrending; to imagine the feelings of the parents who were calling — dread, desperate hope for a sudden answer and the bliss of reassurance, dawning grief — is unbearable. But the parents, and the rest of us, were told that it was not the right moment to ask how the shooting had happened — specifically, why an obviously disturbed student, with a history of mental illness, was able to buy guns whose essential purpose is to kill people — and why it happens over and over again in America. At a press conference, Virginia’s governor, Tim Kaine, said, “People who want to … make it their political hobby horse to ride, I’ve got nothing but loathing for them. … At this point, what it’s about is comforting family members … and helping this community heal. And so to those who want to try to make this into some little crusade, I say take that elsewhere.”

Edit: she posted this three hours ago. I don’t think she even knew about the Neenah shooting yet. She didn’t post about that until half an hour ago, saying ‘Enough of this shit!’

And part of the existing culture is that it’s not a sign of anything concerning if a person amasses a huge collection and decides he needs to carry some of it. The nephew of a friend of mine is in jail for pointing a gun at three people he was yelling at. He’s in big trouble for something he was too mentally ill to comprehend before he did it. He’s an Air Force veteran on 100% disability, and as his uncle put it, ‘Not physical, if you get my drift.’ He’s worn out his welcome at home, and his uncle is not able to do for him what he needs. I don’t know if anyone is.

re: #74 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

Unfortunately, it seems that the RW has won the most recent debate. They have derailed the whole issue of the San Bernardino shooting and turned it into a discussion of Islam, terror and immigrants.

They haven’t won the debate, they’re pretty much won the entire war already. Gun Control is the ultimate taboo politically, and even if certain outlets like the NY Times are finally voicing things, there’s zero political impetus to actually implement this. Instead, the course is being constantly reversed, with gun laws state by state being relaxed to the point of uselessness. The NRA essentially owns the entire debate and the entire country. NOthing is going to be done about guns for at least a generation in this country, no matter what incidents come to pass.

Is Answers in Genesis’ tendency to hire family members problematic?

PETERSBURG, KY. — For Answers in Genesis founder Ken Ham, work has been very much a family affair.

The Boone County, Ky.-based non-profit best known for its Creation Museum, which portrays a non-evolutionary history of the world’s creation based on the Biblical book of Genesis, employed seven of Ham’s family members in fiscal 2012-13. That’s according to the most recent Form 990 - an informational return non-profits file in lieu of an income tax return - that the organization filed with the Internal Revenue Service.

Those family members were Renee Hodge, Ham’s daughter, who earned $34,000 that fiscal year; Danielle Johnson, another daughter, who earned $19,767; Kristel Ham, a third daughter, who earned $13,312; Jeremy Ham, a son, who earned $40,166; David Hodge, Ham’s son-in-law, who earned $59,973; Susan Ham, a daughter-in-law, who earned $21,002; and Stephen Ham, Ken Ham’s brother, who earned $74,856.

Ham himself, who is the organization’s CEO, had $193,361 in total compensation that year.
Altogether, Ham and his family members received a total of $456,437 in compensation from Answers in Genesis Inc. in fiscal 2012-13. That amounts to 4.4 percent of the $10.4 million in total compensation-related expenses that the organization reported that year. That figure includes payroll, insurance, pension accruals and payroll taxes.

Attorney Cole White, who had been receiving calls and text messages from Steven Erato, owner of the motorcycle shop, pieced together this account:

It reminded me of a guy I knew back in Atlantic City who had a computer repair shop. This guy comes in one day wanting to buy a computer. Trying to sound like he knows WTF he’s talking about, he asks what the “dot pitch” of the speakers is. Me and my friend just looked at each other deadpan, struggling mightily not to dissolve into hysterical laughter. I actually had to bolt for the bathroom ‘cause I couldn’t hold it in.

You know, if they were all getting $100K, yeah, it would be problematic. The numbers show everyone except for Ken made less than $75K, and three far less than $75K. Ham himself only pulled down less than $200K. I’m not thinking that’s terribly excessive.

What’s excessive is that he and his organization get a faith-based pass on their bogus crap masquerading as science. That’s what people should be upset about!

He really doesn’t know us as well as he thinks he does. Erick, son of Erick, how about you get down off your high horse and come hang out with us “sinners” for a while. You know, like Jesus did. You might learn something.

re: #383 The Vicious Babushka

Irony is if I’d burned a flag or peed on a picture of Jesus instead of shooting a newspaper, the left would be celebrating me today.

Sorry Eric, celebrating you won’t come anywhere near that cheaply.

My god, Erick, son of Erick. The very fact that I can’t call you the dumbest shitwaffle on the planet is such a damning indictment of the planet.

There are very few things that Erick could do that would cause me to celebrate.
Laying on some railroad tracks, jumping off a bridge chugging some anti-freeze…..maybe.

I’d feel so sorry for the innocent train or empty can of Prestone…

“Mr. Cruz, after very careful consideration, sir, I’ve come to the conclusion that your new defense system sucks.”

I love Barry Corbin and Dabney Coleman’s back-and-forth near the end of WarGames; however, in this case, I would choose Coleman’s response to Corbin.

“I don’t have to take that, you pig-eyed sack of shit!”

When Charles said Erik shot the newspaper, I thought he was kidding. Scrolled down and was flabbergasted.

Does Erik live near a good mental hospital?

What we have is sociopatholical behavior as being realized as a cultural and ideological advantage by our right wing. It is also meant to be implemented as American domestic and foreign policy.

It is how they now operate. It is policy based on reactionary fear and hero worship of current right wing icons like Putin.

As far as Guns are concerned, the NY Times editorial operates under a false premise. The author writes under an assumption that logic and facts can help determine any policy debate. The modern right wing now operates under a completely different cognitive framework that modern society must be torn down at any cost and rebuilt to realize a Utopian image resembling aspects of English Medieval, 18th Century, and 1950’s Andy Griffith fiction, all under a banner of White Jeezus wrapped in an American Flag and carrying a locked and loaded M16.
