I assume the FBI determined his plane from the public information. I wonder if it showed up on one of the public tracking sites? For that matter, I wasn’t aware Cliven was a private pilot. He had to have known there is and has been a flight restriction over the Refuge for several weeks, so he couldn’t overfly it. (And for what, I’m not sure there’s a strip for him to land on.)

It’s also worth noting that there are reports that he went through TSA:

So I’m not sure what exactly went on here. The joys of filtering through Twitter news sources.

I was hoping the feds were going to take advantage of his coming here to Oregon and I’m glad to see that they did. I’m very happy that that freeloading freeman was busted in my state, especially after all of the shit his kin have pulled here. I knew they were only biding their time and once again, it has paid off for everyone.

At least Michele Fiore has a few more constituents to represent here in Oregon! :)

Looking at that timeline, assuming it is legit:

He also retweeted something referencing that the arrest could change the (not-confirmed-by-anyone-not-crazy) surrender deal.

Sic semper evello dildos tyrannis  Feb 11, 2016 • 1:03:15am

These people would be terrifying if they were in any place other than a very wealthy nation with a highly organized law enforcement system. In fact, you don’t have to imagine: the best example of an ideologue militia taking over rural areas and creating para-government is the fucking Taliban.

They’re not just awful because “strict Sharia”—they’re awful because when a Talib says “Sharia” they mean “I say what God’s law is, and coincidentally I get all the good stuff and you get a bullet.” It’s the same with these guy’s Skousen-flavored ramblings about “Constitution”…all the high-concept words just mean “I get mine, fuck you.”

Which is how you end up with fiascos like “the county sheriff is the highest authority” while ignoring, then villifying, the fucking county sheriff.

This is only funny because they’re incompetent relative to LE. Rather like the Wingularity—which when the funny thing stops being funny—there’s a chance that one day a group of these assholes will stumble their way into competence. And the rest of us—who, by virtue of not adhering to their pseudo-legal theorems are considered part of the evil “government”—will be made to suffer and grieve.

That was the point of the authorities’ non-escalation policy. They gave the occupiers enough rope and they hogtied themselves with it. They have no talking points that any reasonable person can consider, and even their “martyred” Tarp Man is a clear case of suicide-by-cop.

Old creationists never die… they just keep reintroducing theocratic legislation:

Mississippi lawmaker admits his education bill is to protect creationism

Mississippi is the latest US state to see a bill introduced that would protect teachers who injected bogus information into science classes. In that regard, there’s nothing new; South Dakota beat it to the punch this year. The text of the bill is also unremarkable, fitting right in to the family tree of similar legislation that’s been introduced over the years (see sidebar).

What is unusual in this case is that the lawmaker behind the bill is being very upfront about his purposes. “I just don’t want my teachers punished in any form or fashion for bringing creationism into the debate,” Representative Mark Formby told The Clarion-Ledger. “Lots of us believe in creationism.” The bill he introduced would protect teachers from any disciplinary actions triggered by their discussion of it into the classroom.

Overcoming Controversy to Increase Science Literacy

On this edition of Talk of Iowa, Charity Nebbe hosts a discussion on science education, science literacy, and the language we use talk about topics like evolution, climate change, and the geologic time scale. Along with Emily Schoerning, Solon High School science teacher Dawn Posekany shares her experiences in the classroom, and anthropologists Briana Pobiner and Tim Weaver discuss what we can learn by studying evolution, and the importance of continuing evolutionary research in the years to come.

MP3 Audio

Emily talks about going around to local communities and working with teachers.

I understand that. But, just because they say they are an x, that does not mean they are an x. It’s one of the ways these groups control the narrative, and it confers upon them a legitimacy they do not deserve. I would be very happy if the media stopped letting them control the narrative and giving them legitimacy.

Instead of backing down when that happens, the media should stick to their guns by making the connections between these terrorists, irrational hatred of the Federal government as part of the aftermath of the civil war, and irrational hatred of the federal government as an increasingly central part of Republican ideology.

I’m fantasizing about a media that does their damn job. Might as well be talking about the unicorn derby results.

They are doing their job as they see fit. Recall that their job is not to provide news and information, it job is to sell advertising time. To do that, they have to attract readers/viewers/listeners. They are not about to risk alienating potential audiences with unbiased, researched reporting.
Nor are they going to risk access to popular political candidates by asking them to explain their contradictory and unrealistic utterances.

This was the time to show that competence. In a revolutionary situation, you cannot rely on there being a “next time”. Also, their cause, being fundamentally selfish and stupid will never attract the political support needed to attain even the most modest goals peacefully. A person from Brooklyn who goes to the Refuge from time to time can enjoy the scenery. This movement threatens to take that away from him and replaces it with nothing but oil rigs and overpriced cattle. There’s no reciprocity.

I had my doubts a few weeks ago, like many of you.
‘What are the Feds doing? Why are they taking so long in taking these fools down?’ &c.
I think the criticism mostly came from a place of anxiety. Was it possible that the anti-government people were so influencial that it became a factor in LE strategy?
And in the last couple of weeks: bam, bam, done. Thank you for your patience.
This last pocket of resistance served as both honeypot for the lustful range-warriors (about whom the FBI has no doubt gathered increasingly important info on) and showcase. One dead, so far, in a standoff that numbered in the dozens; and that one, clearly documented as a man with a deathwish.
You’ve come a long way since Waco. That’s what happens in agencies accountable to the people. This is a good denouement amongst many others that pessimists, like myself, might have forecast.

In a city and metro area of about 8 million people, around a thousand people showed up. And obviously none of them have heard of Separation of Church and State.

As for the rest of these freaking under educated paranoid fools, it’s about fucking time they all end up in jail. What pisses me off is the amount of damage they did to OUR LANDS and that taxpayers will be footing the bill for the clean up and repairs. Not to mention the information they now have and have most likely passed on from the computers at the refuge. I hope they all get the maximum. So now Ammand’s lawyer is going to pick up Fiore at the Portland airport and drive her to the terrorist stronghold.

Can this get any more fucked up?

Why yes it can. Franklin Graham’s about to get involved.

This is what happens when you allow the Bundy cancer to metastasize.

Maybe (hopefully) this is where the Bundy cancer is cut out in a similar manner as to how the others were captured. Without a shooting. Arrest them as the try to get to the sanctuary and put them in holding to chill them out and then take Bundy senior to be prosecuted, etc. if they can charge him with anything.

Woke up this morning to the news that the welfare queen Cliven Bundy was arrested and now in custody. He’s going to be charged with conspiracy; the same charges as his criminal offspring.

Too bad. So sad. Not.

They are getting precisely what they deserve. They broke the law by not paying grazing fees for their herds in Nevada. They trespassed and threatened federal law enforcement.

Then they kicked it up a notch with the NWR standoff. They engaged in domestic terrorism - threatening violence if they didn’t get their way.

They further damaged the NWR, and those charges should be added to the indictments down the line as a superseding indictment, which also includes grand theft, vandalism, violations of the Wilderness Act and Antiquities Act. Oh, and I’d throw conspiracy and RICO at them as well. They are a criminal enterprise and should spend the rest of their lives occupying another federal facility.

ADX Florence.

If you think that too harsh, consider that you’ve got countless criminal charges, some of which carry lengthy prison sentences by themselves. Add the conspiracy, the vandalism (a major charge considering damage for each count by itself could be 10 years prison and/or $250k - think of the fence damage, tearing up roads/running new roads where the damage is $1,000 or more), tampering with utilities, tampering with federal computer networks, etc.

Yeah, they’re going to deserve all the criminal sanctions.

So, why were right wingers so quick to flock to these nuts - welfare queens? Because they hate the government. Yet, the Bundy nuts want something for nothing, thinking that the land should be theirs (even though they have no claim to it - just as surely as they have no connection to the Malheur NWR, the original occupants of which were Paiute Indians, not white nuts from Nevada).

Hmm, statute of limitations, how does that work? I just had a conversation with a cow orker (disclosure, non-LE fed, we kida do that constitution thingy all the time) who I often have discussions about the rampant stupidity of the general population.

The general thought is that most people think that feds are lazy and stupid, hence Cliven’s brilliant idea to leap on a plane and fly and then try to drive into a mass of federal agents expecting nothing to happen. Or, Ammon, and his crowd driving 100-odd miles to a meeting and not thinking something might happen. Or, the rest of these lackwits and all the derp that flows out of their mouths.

I find it vastly amusing to watch their hopes and dreams come crashing down around their ears. And, the utter contempt that they are heaping upon themselves (outside of the nutbar community) and hopefully the harm that they have done to their pompous and misguided/misinformed ‘cause.’

What other day is there for lower wage working slobs? It maximizes turnout among a key larger constituency - anything else and they have a harder time participating.

Having voting hours outside of working hours is a good solution to that. Around these parts, polling places are quite busy in the early morning and in the late afternoon.

re: #191 lawhawk

Nothing quite complicates your life like a federal indictment.

When one woman — presumed to be Fiore — asked David and Sandy about their families, a man responded, “God has put us on this path. Our families are already taken care of; they weren’t in our lives much before all this because God made sure we didn’t have that to weigh us down so that we could do this,” one man said.

The delusions these morons have developed to protect their egos from recognizing that they are simply failures at life! No careers to speak of and their families are dysfunctional. Oh wait, G-d has a plan just for them, to lead our country back to righteousness!

Its up to the Nevada Democratic Party of Nevada to set a day for their caucus if they are going to have a caucus. A better system would be to have a primary with early voting options easily available and same day registration.

Hmmm, the GOP is going to call anyone to the right of Hitler a socialist (and considering that Trump routinely cites white supremacists and approvingly reads Hitler speeches), it’s life imitating Idiocracy. The GOP will call Bernie or Hillary a socialist as a smear.

That’s even as the GOP seeks to tear up the social contract and slash and burn the safety net so that the rich can get richer by shifting all the burdens on to those least able to afford them.

That’s what the GOP tax policies are all about.

It’s what the forced-birth anti choice extremists are seeking (especially when it comes to depriving access to birth control).

It’s what “smaller” government is about (except for Trump building that 2,000 mile wall that isn’t going to be 2,000 miles because we could use natural barriers in places), and the personnel to man the wall.

I get a kick out that natural barriers part - because deserts and rivers comprise a significant part of the border with Mexico. He’s found a way to weasel out of building a wall for the entire thing. And the rubes will cheers all the same.

I’m in Nevada. We had this problem eight years ago with the Democratic caucuses. I don’t like that certain groups are being disenfranchised, but on the other hand, this is probably the best time for the majority of the people. They also set up caucus sites for people who work on the Strip so they don’t have to go to their own precinct to caucus.

Caucuses are pretty dumb for a whole host of reasons, and disenfranchisement of any group sucks, whether that disenfranchisement is externally imposed due to work or internally imposed due to whatever perceived religious obligation.

Ferguson’s city council voted to not accept the consent decree. They’re going to fight it claiming that the city can’t afford to enact the changes.

The same city council will now scrounge around for legal fees to fight the DOJ case, which is pretty much airtight and is a no-brainer.

So, when the case falls apart for the city, the residents will pay more than twice:
1) paying for the legal fees that they shouldn’t have had to incur by the legal case;

If you’re hoping most voters are not RWNJs — yes, that’s probably naive.

The Dems need to spend the next three or four months making sure every possible non-nutcake voter gets registered to vote, because it’s going to take more time than it needs to for too many people to try to jump the voter restriction hoops. Instead we’re probably going to waste it bickering among ourselves over H v. B when we could be working the campaigns for Congress critters and state offices. *sigh*

You say you were born in the 60s. So, I’m going to use 1965 as a date. That would make someone 51 today. Look around at the real wingnuts you see online. There sure are a whole lot of them less than 51.

Ferguson’s city council voted to not accept the consent decree. They’re going to fight it claiming that the city can’t afford to enact the changes.

What’s even more amusing about their refusal to play, is that one of the city council member who voted against accepting the consent decree was on the committee that negotiated it. He claimed (interview on Here and Now, yesterday) was that they had to finalize the agreement even though he knew that they would then reject it.

So, yesterday there was a shootout involving Maryland deputies. Two officers were killed. The shooter was eventually confronted and killed by other law enforcement.

The identities of the officers still hasn’t been released but Dim Jim was quick to blame the attack on Beyonce.

Well, not so fast there Jimmy. The shooter, David Evans, was a 68 year old white guy from Florida who had a record of violence, including assaulting a cop. And his estranged son claims Evans shot his mom 20 years ago. His mom was the one who called the police and told them Evans (the shooter) was at Panera Bread, Jeremy (the son) said. She was worried that Evans might try to attack her, which is why the deputies approached him in the first place.

To tie this into the creationism topic, real science is about making observations, and testing theories against the observations. It’s not about conforming reality to some precious preconceived notion of how thing ought to work.

And most upheavals over the centuries have involved ever increasing precision of the ability to measure.

Same principle, just taken up to 11. Interferometers are useful for a wide variety of experiments involving relativity; it’s just a matter of figuring out how to vary the construction to test the thing you want to test, without introducing new variables.

Contrary to Hollywood’s assertions, tranq darts are tricky because you have to have an exact dose tailored to the target’s mass and metabolism. Otherwise, you could kill them, or it would have no effect at all.

There is a church here in Columbus that if you are going through the city on Interstate 70 heading east in the downtown area that casts a shadow image of Jesus with a little plywood cutout and a floodlight on the face of the church. It has been there for a long long time. I wonder how many traveling by it think it is a miracle.

1) paying for the legal fees that they shouldn’t have had to incur by the legal case;
2) paying to impose the conditions of the consent decree; and
3) paying for the delay in enacting the consent decree to fix much of what ails the FPD.

I have a feeling the city will simply dissolve and disincorporate.

re: #401 Aunty Entity Dragon

That’d actually be a good thing if the successor entity is required to adhere to the consent decree as well.

Frankly, every little fiefdom in and around the Greater STL area faces many of the same problems as Ferguson - racial profiling, using minorities as a piggy bank to fund the criminal justice system, and keeping people in poverty through the fines/jailing system they’ve got running there. It’s quite the racket, but it’s also been known to the MO AG for quite some time too.

The AG stats bear this out.

The entire frickin’ region should be required to operate under the same consent decree, up to and including the STL County Police Department, whose officers repeatedly engaged in excessive force throughout the protest period, ratcheting up tensions instead of containing them.

Is that resulting shape due to the filament of the bulb used being offset to one side? Or is there something else going on causing that light pattern with the way the interior mirror reflects the light?

It’s a factor of the reflector shape, the shape of the bulb and the position of the filament. Older/cheaper flashlights can make the “heart” shape, but newer ones, like Maglites, have a more uniform beam. I think the key is the size of the bulb. My miniMag has teeny tiny bulb, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it make a cardioid pattern no matter how I focus it.

YMMV.

I’m not but there is a large community there who are not happy about this.

The South Carolina primaries are also on Saturdays.

I know a guy who has a collection of old geiger counters, Civil Defense, military, and the commercial ones sold to the public during the brief uranium prospecting craze of the late 40s. This includes both true geiger counters and ion chamber devices (most CD “geiger counters” are actually ion chamber types). Most of them work.

WhenI was teaching physics, we had an old CD yellow radiation detectors that took one of those big lantern batteries. I never got it working.

I am so sick of white Americans telling black Americans how they should act. It is so fucking condescending. Man I really thought we were over this shit.

Speaking as a male, who only happens to be white, I was enjoying Beyoncé’s performance on many different levels. Ahem. I think some of these old white men complaining about Bey’s performance just have to own up and say she and her dancers are sexy, and *that’s* why they’re upset.

Detroit Local Powers First EV Charging Road in North America The road, about a mile from Local 58's hall, uses rubber-coated copper inductive-charging coils buried under the asphalt that transfer power to a receiver pad attached to a car's underbelly, much like how a phone can be charged wirelessly. ...
