Did Infamous Troll Chuck C. Johnson Really “Beat Planned Parenthood?” (Nope.)

More lies from the Rage Furby

Infamous troll Chuck C. Johnson poses with indicted Center for Medical Progress head David Daleiden, 10-25-2015

On his Facebook page yesterday, real life stalker Chuck C. Johnson posted a gloating comment that he had “won!” He “beat Planned Parenthood!”

The first thing we should point out as we take apart Johnson’s boasting claims of victory: he didn’t “beat Planned Parenthood” at all. Planned Parenthood is not part of the lawsuit against the Center for Medical Progress in which Chuck was subpoenaed to give a deposition. The suit was brought by the National Abortion Federation.

But of course, it helps Johnson’s fund-raising for him to lie about this and say he “beat Planned Parenthood,” and he’s hoping right wingers won’t notice he isn’t telling the truth.

Second, is it even true that he “beat” the NAF?

A report at Courthouse News Service shows what a hollow victory this really is for Chuck Johnson; as a matter of fact, it may not even be over yet.

Johnson and his lawyer were asking the court to grant him protection from being deposed, under California’s journalist “shield law,” but that’s not what happened; Chuck doesn’t get to claim he was ruled a “journalist.” Here are the details:

The federation’s lawyers questioned Johnson about the source of the leaked videos in November 2015 after Orrick denied Johnson’s motion to quash a deposition subpoena.

After the deposition, the federation asked the judge to order Johnson to turn over emails that would reveal the source of the leak. Johnson answered with a new motion to quash the subpoena.

The judge then asked the center’s members and founder David Daleiden to respond under penalty of perjury whether they had any knowledge of the person who leaked those videos to Johnson.

Daleiden and his associates submitted their responses in four court-sealed declarations last month.

“Everyone has denied knowledge of the leak, under pain of penalty of perjury,” Orrick said in his Feb. 16 ruling. “Absent further evidence that the leak of the federation materials came from a party or counsel before me, at this time I will take no further action.”

Orrick granted Johnson’s motion to quash the subpoena without prejudice, adding he reserves the right to revisit the issue if new evidence comes to light on the source of the leak.

So the motion to quash was granted only because Daleiden and his accomplices signed sworn statements saying they had no knowledge of who leaked the videos to Johnson. Not only that, the judge also reserved the right to bring Johnson back for another deposition if new evidence comes to light. So our boy Chuck is not really out of the woods yet, despite all his gloating.

But he’s all pumped up, and now he’s ranting about taking Twitter to court.

I’d actually love to see him try to sue Twitter for suspending his account; it would give me hilarious material for months, and he’d end up getting anti-SLAPPed into next year.

But notice who’s responding to Chuck in that comment thread: his neo-Nazi pal Andrew Auernheimer, whining because Twitter banned him from buying advertisements after he purchased ads containing white supremacist slogans.

I think he should try to take that one to court too. That would be an excellent idea.

UPDATE at 2/18/16 11:50:11 am by Charles Johnson

And a note about Chuck’s fund-raising falsely using Planned Parenthood’s name: he raised over $4000 for his “legal defense fund” with this scam — then promptly took a vacation in Australia and New Zealand.

The Court saying “we don’t have enough evidence to do anymore right now” is not the same as beating the other side. If the CMP folks let slip in later discovery that they know something, the judge is going to come down on them hard. Again, the first rule of litigation in federal court is: don’t piss off a judge with a lifetime appointment.

Chuck claims a “congressional staffer” leaked the videos. NAF have asked Congress to investigate; I’m not holding my breath, but if Rep. Cummings wanted to make an issue out of it, he could, and Johnson could find himself being forced to give up his source after all. Chuck better hope the GOP keeps the House.

Nobody in the American media has the nerve to call trump out for being an insufferable asshole, I guess it takes the Pope.

This will strengthen his standing with his most devoted followers and totally wreck his chances of winning any sort of general election. He forgets that a lot of people, even non-Catholics, respect the Pope and his office.

Not UN troops. Black beret clad black panthers, with a combo rainbow bedecked smelter and wood chipper trailer for every block - that way, when they confiscate the little rifle that your beloved and wise white grandfather took you out plinking with when you were 7 years old, they can destroy it right in front of you while laughing at your sad tears.

re: #22 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)

why would all the heat seem to be concentrating at the north pole?

If I were a geologist, I’d be tempted to establish whether recent earthquake activity is generally symetrical with respect to latitude, or occurring significantly more in northern latitudes than in southern. The slow upward magma flow(s) that transfer heat from earth’s interior must of course be matched by downward flow(s) elsewhere.

These flows should be expected to be large, to change slowly (over decades) and to be chaotic in the long term (centuries?). IF significant upward flow(s) are currently much closer to the north pole than the south pole, that *may* explain the temperature (warming) differentials for arctic circle vs antarctic. This theory might be testable by carefully (re)checking recent continental drift data.

Right and according to this, Senator Sanders is opposed to these visas which could lead to more exploitation. I’ve actually met quite a few of these seasonal workers over the years. Where I go to the beach has a lot of them. When I was a kid, they were mostly Irish college kids and now it’s mostly Eastern Europeans. Again, if we introduced a mandatory national ID for all citizens and legal resident aliens, then that would end all issues regarding employment, school enrollment and public benefits. And it would make it possible to check legal employment status at a glance.

And totally end the voter ID issue.

But it has no chance of being enacted due to ideological hurdles, both right and left.

There’s an economic centered argument for this: Why allow cheaper immigrants in? Pay Americans to do those jobs at American wages.

Ask the Georgia farming community how well that worked for them.

The take away here is that there a some jobs Americans just wont do anymore.

It is just so wrong. Sick that this still continues to happens. That’s what happens when so called religious liberty is given more preference than individual liberty.

This is also what happens when you have an abortion ban with life or health of the mother exceptions. Since the default is a ban, sick people end up having to prove to someone’s satisfaction that there really is legitimate life/health issue.

It is disgusting, like all other aspects of this anti-choice crap.

A great point. Let’s just make it as safe and legal as possible. Let’s not use be shaming women for choosing to do what they want to do with their own bodies. It’s so fucking lame and telling that an ideology that insists they’re about individual rights and liberty is about anything but this when it comes to women choosing what they want to do with theirs.

I thought they had a problem with attacking other people’s religion. Let’s talk about your faith Ted. Your father is a religious bigot who thinks you, his son are divinely chosen to “save” our country. After facing hostile questions from Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski Wednesday night—they comprehensively laid out his flip-flops, presented him with damning videotape, and asked him to explain the inconsistencies in detail—Trump was confronted by hostile audience members at MSNBC’s televised town-hall forum. When a Muslim questioner got up to ask why he had said such bigoted things about minorities, Trump seemed to struggle while Scarborough forced him to respond. The candidate looked uncomfortable, unhappy, and somewhat lost. It could be a turning point.

And with the RW’s amazing ability to take things out of context, whether if be something from the Bible, or anything said by a Democrat or something said by the Pope, the exact quote was:

“A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian,”

The real focus should be on the second part, not building bridges. Instead they focus only on the first. I believe the Vatican has both walls and bridges.

And as someone at another side said, the real fun thing about this is that the Pope really doesn’t care what Trump or any other of these weenies think about him. But apparently Trump cares what the Pope thinks to respond so childishly.

Fair point I guess but I think they would be subject to the same wage laws as American workers would be since they’d be working in America for American companies.

No, they are not.
Not for wages or for working conditions.
These workers are recruited under false premises, with lots of false promises, and are essentially indentured servants when they arrive.

MSNBC’s Town Hall With Donald Trump Was Disgraceful

File this under the “No Shit, Sherlock”. As is every other Trump ass kissing fest since day one.

I think they missed the main criticism of the MSNBC/Trump event, and that is that it took place at all.

Here you have two morning hosts, moderating a special prime time town hall for ONE candidate. A candidate who shows up almost every morning on their regular program and receives very favorable treatment. If they are going to do a town hall, it should be for ALL the GOP candidates. I may be ignorant of the facts but I have heard nothing about them hosting any of the other GOP candidates.

Now, tonight there will be competing town hall meetings on CNN and MSNBC, but all the Dem and GOP candidates are (or have already been) participants in these town halls.

Billy Madison: Uh… Okay. The Industrial Revolution to me is just like a story I know called “The Puppy Who Lost His Way.” The world was changing, and the puppy was getting… bigger.

[Later]

Billy Madison: So, you see, the puppy was like industry. In that, they were both lost in the woods. And nobody, especially the little boy - “society” - knew where to find ‘em. Except that the puppy was a dog. But the industry, my friends, that was a revolution.

[Long pause]

Billy Madison: Knibb High football rules!

[the crowd erupts into cheers]

Principal: Mr. Madison, what you have just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Bombing of Darwin: The story of US Kittyhawk pilots Buel and Oestreicher

While much has been written of the catastrophic attacks on Darwin by the Japanese 74 years ago, less known are the deeds of two American pilots, one of whom lies in a watery grave in the sea to the north, the other who went on to be hailed a hero, albeit disputed.

Days out from the surprise raids on Darwin of February 19, 1942, United States of America Air Force Lieutenant Robert Buel and Lieutenant Robert Oestreicher were flying their Kittyhawk fighters in the skies north of Darwin.

You know, the farmer would chop down corn and put it on the wagon and take it into town and sell it; within 200 years of the advent of America, men were walking on the moon.”

The Pope Is Way More Popular Than Donald Trump

Donald Trump took a break from threatening to sue rival candidates on Thursday and appears to be trying to start a holy war with Pope Francis instead. Trump may not care about any resulting eternal judgment, but he might have reason to worry about worldly opinion: Pope Francis has a net +53 favorability rating among Americans,1 while Trump has a net -27 favorability rating.2

True, Pope Francis is somewhat less popular with Republicans than among Americans overall. But he’s still reasonably well-liked. In a CNN poll in September,3 56 percent of Republicans had a favorable view of Pope Francis as compared to 21 percent with an unfavorable one. Francis had +20 net favorability rating even among self-described tea-party supporters.

or aware of how Dark Ages Europe was impoverished compared to the ME of that time and thus not as military strong.

At the time Islam was expanding one of the largest cities in Europe was Frankfurt, the heart of the Carolingian empire. Population? About 10,000 people.

In Abbasid Caliphate (I believe that was the name of the Arab Empire at that time. Correct me if I’m wrong) Baghdad had over a million. El Fustat (Cairo) about the same. Lots of other cities had the same. Reason? Sewer systems and fresh water delivery paid for with rather fair taxes (for the day).

I used to be very pro-life. You could say that I still am, since I have never personally chose to have an abortion and I have enough kids and grandkids to populate a sports league. However I always assumed yes, of COURSE there should be exceptions for rape, incest and the mother’s life.

But the problem with the rape exception: why put the victim through a second hell in order to “prove” how raped she was?

The problem with the incest exception: this is a child who is being molested by a family member and she is not going to come forward if she has to go through a second hell in order to “prove” that she was raped by a family member.

The problem with the life of the mother exception: Savita. SHE DID NOT HAVE TO DIE. When a pregnancy becomes life-threatening, as in sepsis, eclampsia and pre-eclampsia, the situation can deteriorate very quickly and THERE IS NO TIME to go around looking for legal justifications to proceed with the procedure they should have done right away.

The only way to resolve these issues is not to make “exceptions” for these situations but to do away with “exceptions” and perform abortion like any other medical procedure with no non-medical questions asked. Like they do in other civilized countries, like Canada, Sweden, Netherlands and Israel.

As for the TPP, I think she did flip on that one pretty much for political purposes…union vote. I can live with that. All candidates have at least one area that they pander to a bit. It’s a calculated risk. Her better domestic policy on the whole, and her far better grip on Foreign policy makes this an easy vote for me.

re: #232 Targetpractice

The whole “exceptions” business is a political construct meant to allow wingnut theocrats to convince the gullible masses that they don’t view women as walking incubators or that they’re cruelly indifferent to the suffer of pregnant women, they just want to limit abortion to those who “need” it. Or, at least that used to be the game plan, before some knucklehead back in 2012 had to give the whole scam away with his “genuine rape” remark.

I used to be “pro life” for a little while too but a couple things have made me strongly pro choice. The first was realizing that as a man that I have NO room at all to tell a woman what to do with her pregnancy. I still feel we should do what we can to make abortions less frequent and that’s through good sex ed programs, readily available contraception, and programs that help poor and unwed mothers instead of shaming them. The other thing was a point I saw made by Senator Kennedy that he had been pro-life but when he realized that even with criminalized abortion, the more well off women would still be getting them and the poor would not, that it needed to be legal and readily available as possible. I never have liked the political “pro life” movement. I knew some people as a kid who spent the Roe annivesrary either on the Mall or heckling people at clinics. That hsit always bothered me.

Operation Gideon: Cruz’s South Carolina salvation

Ted Cruz’s campaign is betting that an old-time religious revival will deliver him victory in the South Carolina primary on Saturday.

When Cruz announced Thursday that 300 Christian leaders across the state had endorsed him for president, it was the culmination of what the campaign has dubbed “Operation Gideon.”

It’s an alliance among a close-knit group of prominent Christians in South Carolina who are leveraging their positions as faith leaders to influence their thousands of followers to join them in supporting Cruz for president.

re: #229 The Vicious Babushka

Well said.

One of the things that I thought Bill Clinton handled extremely well when he was president was abortion, when he managed to form a general consensus that abortion should be ‘safe, legal and rare’. Polling on abortion pretty much maps directly to that thinking - people think that abortion is a tragedy every time that it happens, but that it should be an option that’s available.

Ironically, we could probably cut abortion in about half tomorrow if that was really the goal of the GOP, because we know that unconditional distribution of contraception reduces abortion rates by about that much (teen pregnancy too!) But we’ll never get there because women having sex are eeeeevilllll temptresses that deserve to be punished for their transgressions.

I gotta say, I’m souring even more on the whole ‘anti-establishment’ idea. One problem with anti-establishment types is that often they lack the depth of knowledge and thought that you see in people who’ve been working on this shit for decades.

Consider Hillary’s detailed, well thought out, nuanced answers on a broad range of topics. Compare that with Bernie’s more ‘One Size Fits All’ responses. What Bernie says is true, but it’s not the WHOLE truth, and his answers don’t reflect decades of considering policies and effects.

On the GOP side, the depth of Trump’s ignorance of policy, disdain of nuance, and arrogance about his ability to make whatever he wants happen is terrifying. Frightening as the others are, Trump is terrifying.

I’m mystified why people think being ‘against the Establishment’ is such a great thing.

IMO, the ‘revolution’ we need is for people to start taking an interest again. The GOP has cynically cultivated the view that your vote doesn’t count, and the system doesn’t work, and it’s worked. Trust in all institutions is at all time lows, and a lot of the institutions are working hard to earn that lack of trust. Consider MSNBC’s fellating Trump for a couple hours last night. The Press’s role is to hold candidates’ feet to the fire, to ask the hard, unanswerable questions. But years of pressure from the GOP, combined with integrity losing out to the drive for ratings, has left the media gunshy about seeming too ‘liberal’, and happy to avoid certain topics, or pressing too hard, so as not to jeopardize ‘access’.

So, people get cynical and stop paying attention. What news they hear, they only believe if they want to. People feel powerless, and like The System cannot be made to work.

With the caveat that I’m leaning Bernie, my huge problem with the anti-establishment meme is that all that clout and all that power is what you need to get a congress. Neither Bernie nor Hillary is doing fuck-all unless they at least get the Senate. The Establishment, the DNC, and money is how that happens. I see little or no effort on the part of the Bernie enthusiasts on downballot races, though.

That’s the difference between someone who is an avowed lifetime Democrat and one who runs as a Democrat solely for convenience. Bernie is not actually interested in strengthening the party - and many of his followers are actually proud of that. It just seems hopelessly naive.
