A Bad Lip Reading Remix: Bernie vs. Hillary
It’s time for Bernie’s song now.
It’s time for Bernie’s song now.
I’m waiting for the SNL skit where Bernie and Hillary sing “Mockingbird”…
re: #1 Joe Bacon
or “Margaritaville”.
Can’t you just imagine “Bernie” singing:
Some people claim that there’s a woman to blame,
But I know it’s nobody’s fault.
The end of SNL was disappointing - should have bailed when they started running the ‘Prince Show’ skits.
The music clips were outstanding, though.

I’ll have to save this for later.
My project today was to clean out the fungus growth inside my Nikkor 200mm AI lens. I never knew such a thing could happen, but it seems to be a common enough problem for many YouTube videos.
Anyway, I had to order a new set of screwdrivers to get the size (1.0 mm) for the tiny screw holding the forward barrel secure, so I could get to the back side of the front lens. That cleaned up easily. No etching of the glass or coating.
But, there is also a small amount of fungus growing in the inside of the rear elements. As I don’t have any tool available to loosen the ring holding the rear lens in place, I just left it alone. The fungus doesn’t seem to interfere with image quality as much as the front contamination did.
So, I call it 85% successful for a couple of hours work.
re: #9 wheat-dogghazi-mailgate
Congratulations for not losing a screw. I find that keeping those things corralled is difficult to do.

I put them in a lens cap, and my screwdriver is magnetic, so I managed not to lose any — this time.
So, I’ve signed up on freelancer.com, looking for writing and editing gigs, and getting disgusted (as a teacher) by the number of “academic writing” jobs that are basically lazy-ass students not willing to do their own homework.
Then I came across this one, with a budget of $170.

On the one hand, it’s good to see that I’m not the only one to come across the sea of “academic” writing “jobs” to be found there. On the other hand, knowing with certainty that it isn’t just me makes the reality of it all the more depressing…

Might try storing the lens (not the camera) in a sealed container with a good bit of silica gel when not in use. It won’t remove the fungus, but might slow growth/acid production. Disregard if there are any adhesive-dependent parts—it will dessicate and loosen the glues.

Will do, though the climate here is damp all year round. I made the mistake of putting the lens away for over a year without using it. It needs “airing out,” I guess.

A Nikkor might be worth shipping off for a good clean/lubricate/adjust. Another thing about silica gel—it can be ‘recharged’ indefinitely by leaving it in an oven at temps just above pilot light for a few hours. Even a jury-rigged solar warmer might work.

I would if I were in the States. I was not impressed by the last clean/lube/adjust I had done on another lens here. The cleaning was OK, but the iris sticks sometimes, messing up exposures. Anyway, those two lenses are spare parts now. Instead of the 200mm Nikkor I use a Tamron zoom with VR, and the new kit lens with my D3300 replaces the other Nikkor 28-85mm* non-VR lens I tried to salvage. I think I’ll try to sell these extra lenses on eBay, because now I don’t really need them.
The Nikkor 200mm is a nice lens, though.
* I’ve forgotten the specs on it. I should probably pull that out and inspect it too for fungal growth.
This discussion makes me think I should look for some Pre-AI lenses again, especially a 24/2.8, for my micro 4/3 adapter. Cheap way get really nice glass at a 2:1 crop ratio. My nikkor 50/1.4 makes an excellent portrait/short Tele for example.
Canon FD glass is nice that way too.
re: #22 William Lewis
I like the new AF zoom lenses for their convenience, but the old AI prime lenses seem much sharper.
I just looked up silica gel on amazon. Here are the results: amazon.com
It may help keep your camera lenses fungus free. And yes I too would clean up a Nikkor lens.

Morning!
Heard some interesting Democratic election news this morning on local Columbus NBC. They were talking about Tuesday’s primaries and that Hillary was ahead in all the polls. Then they mentioned Hillary is already preparing for the general election and thinking of VP running mates.
They mentioned two we’ve all heard discussed; Tim Kaine and Julian Castro.
And then I realized why Columbus media was spending time talking about Clinton running mates. The third name is Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown. That’d be cool. I’ve known and followed him from his first political run as an Ohio state representative in 1974. And he is a home town boy.
And Brown has deep liberal cred and he too is a big bank fighter…so Hillary could use him as her own Glass-Steagall Act rebuilder type. Take that!

Wouldn’t a major downside to Sherrod Brown (PS: IMO, an excellent candidate!) running on a national ticket be that the Democrats might/would lose his Senate seat, given that Ohio’s gov is the odious Kasich? Does Ohio have a special-election rule for Senate vacancies, or does the replacement serve out the full term?
Heh. Doing a bit of digging on Sherrod Brown and came across an article dishing the dirt on him from when he was running for the Senate against Josh Mandel.
Found this interesting, as it goes to what I just posted about him being a good liberal for Hillary to add to the ticket as her running mate.
The National Journal ranks Brown as the most liberal Senator, which puts him to the left of self-described socialist Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. (On this ideological spectrum, he replaced then-Senator Barack Obama, who was ranked the most liberal in 2007.) amazon.com is still selling copies of his 2004 book, The Myths of Free Trade: Why American Trade Policy Has Failed, which is a 240-page assault on economic liberalism and trade agreements.
And this is a fun bit…from his first run as a State Rep.
The year was 1974. Ohio House Speaker Verne Riffe, a self-described country boy and a master of pragmatic politics in southern Ohio, met with a 21-year old Sherrod Brown about becoming the Democratic candidate for the Mansfield-area. Brown was selected by Richland County Party chairman Donald Kindt, who noticed his talents as a volunteer for George McGovern’s presidential campaign in the summer of 1972.
At the time, Brown was not quite finished with his senior year in the Russian studies program at Yale. With his messy hair, a scratchy voice (It sounds as if he is continuously gargling saltwater) and hard-left views, Riffe was less than impressed.
According to the Cleveland Scene, after their meeting, Riffe angrily called Kindt and screamed, “Where the hell did you get that goddamn hippie sonuvabitch? Is that the best we’ve got?”
However, since Brown went onto became the youngest member of the Ohio legislature, defeated Dennis Kucinich in a 4-way primary to become Ohio Secretary of State, was elected to 6 terms to the U.S. House, and now serves as the state’s senior Senator—It is clear the answer to Riffe’s question for Ohio Democrats is an unequivocal “Yes.”
Here is a link for the rest of the article if anyone is interested. It also covers his first wife and their divorce which was a hot campaign issue of course.
I’m unfamiliar with this site…it appears to be quite conservative.

Good question. I really don’t know the answer. I sure would hope Ohioans would elect another Democrat Senator should Brown become VP. We do seem to keep a balance going between Northern Ohio wanting A Dem and southern Ohio going with a Repub.
I think Clinton will find someone good though. Her ambition is constantly used against her but I think she’s ready for this in a way that Sanders, Trump, Cruz, and Kasich aren’t even close to being ready.

From what I can find, it looks like the Senate vacancy is a gubernatorial appointment until the next election cycle.
Yuck. That would mean Johnny Kasich would have the replacement job. Not good.
re: #46 ObserverArt
OK, a brief wiki-trek showed me that Ohio has had special elections in the past for Senators, but none recently enough to be relevant (1929). I also see that the state’s other Senate seat is up this year, Strickland v. Portman. Hopefully that might turn and mitigate a possible loss of Brown….

The problem with Brown from a party perspective is that if he were to run with Hillary and they won, then John Kaisch would choose his replacement. That would make it significantly harder for the Democrats to retake the Senate.
I am on record of liking Castro and here’s why. I think he provides some executive experience as mayor of a large city, some Washington experience as an administrator of a cabinet department, and he’s also young and I think can appeal to Hispanic voters. I am really glad that he’s being vetted.

I’d be very happy with Castro as a VP. It could set the stage for his running as president later on.

There won’t be many details. The only person dead is the shooter, and so I don’t think the incident will get much press.
And honestly, its best if it didn’t. It should minor reports outside of the local area and in those reports the shooter should not be named. No details of his life should be discussed other than a simple stating of likely motive, and then his corpse should either be cremated or anonymously buried. It’s best the dirtbag be forgotten.

There’s a difference between what we’d prefer and what would be ‘awful’. Ultimately, both parties need to recover a sense of what they can be OK with from members of the other party. Simply shouting “Democrats mean DOOM!!1” is counterproductive and paranoia inducing.

Yes, really. Irrespective of the electoral fate of Sen. Portman, if Gov. Kaisch gets to appoint a replacement for Sherrod Brown, that replacement would be a Republican. It’s a pure numbers game in terms of who controls the Senate.
I know that, and I already acknowledged it. It would only be to fill out the remaining term. That is not a guarantee that Republican would win the seat in the next election cycle. That is what I am talking about.
You should know that Ohio is far from a red state. We do a good job of keeping a balance. If we had a stronger Democratic State organization we would probably be a bit more Blue than Red.
And, the state is changing. The parts of Ohio that always lean Republican are being changed by the fact that a lot of small town, farm communities and poor Appalachia areas are disappearing as the larger metro areas growing bigger and bigger.
I can speak for Columbus. This city is booming and taking in a lot of rural Ohio youth. Once in the big city their thinking changes. The GOP will face tougher and tougher times in this state.
And of course you know Ohio had a lot to do with electing Obama. And Kasich knows it.
Kasich would be smart to put a centrist Dem in an empty seat politically. And he is John Kasich…you just never know. A move like that would actually help him and his party in my opinion. He always claims he can work with this state’s Democrats. Piss off Columbus, Cleveland, Akron and Toledo any further than he has and it could cost the GOP in the future.
re: #74 Wendell Zurkowitz (slave to the waffle light)
Shouldn’t Kasich hold off on the nomination as it is an election year or something?
His office not up for election this year, so no. :P
re: #54 Dark_Falcon
The problem with Brown from a party perspective is that if he were to run with Hillary and they won, then John Kaisch would choose his replacement. That would make it significantly harder for the Democrats to retake the Senate.
Kasich could do like Governor Wendell Anderson did when Hubert Humphrey passed away in 1978 - resign as governor and then have the new governor (crazy Rudy Perpich) appoint him as senator. That boneheaded move cost both of them the next election later that year.
re: #76 Dark_Falcon
There’s a difference between what we’d prefer and what would be ‘awful’. Ultimately, both parties need to recover a sense of what they can be OK with from members of the other party. Simply shouting “Democrats mean DOOM!!1” is counterproductive and paranoia inducing.
Saying that Kasich would make an awful choice is perfectly legit. I mean come on man I know you’re literal but I think it’s pretty clear that she meant awful politically(Kind of like how your party views even the moderate Merrick Garland to replace the very right wing Scalia as awful) and BD/Art know Kasich a lot better than you or I do.
re: #57 Alyosha
If the GOP were smart, Trump would nominate an establishment VP and then the RNC would leak a terrible medical report of a serious Trump heart condition to the press just before the election.
Trump has to choose someone even more toxic that himself so that the legislative branch has to think twice before starting impeachment proceedings.

No, that wouldn’t be smart. He’d be branded a RINO and effectively read out of the party. A Republican centrist could work, but not a Democrat.
I do agree that Ohio Republicans and Republicans more generally need to be better at creating conservative policies that can work in a city, which will mean not being phobic about commuter rail among other things.

I really don’t understand the reflexive disgust the GOP has for commuter rail, or mass transit in general. Walker killed a high speed rail proposal, IIRC. Moving people around cheaply and efficiently is good for business. It’s not just for poor people, after all.

Yeah I just don’t get that. Mass transit cuts down on traffic. It’s so much easier to get around D.C by Metro than it is with a car. The parking fees alone.
With that thought, I’m turning in semi-early (for me) tonight. See everyone later on!

You really have a Republican blind spot in your thinking.
And you have not learned enough about one John Kasich. He is the last guy that would worry about being a RINO. I guess you don’t remember his allowing expanded medicaid. That pissed off a lot of the state and national GOP. There have been other lesser examples. Once he took heat over killing public unions he changed course to keep his butt in his seat.
John Kasich is John Kasich . He is his own asshole.

Vice President Paladino. And yes I’m aware that they’re both New Yorkers.
That wouldn’t work, since Paladino wouldn’t last till election day. The man actually is a combat veteran, and listening to Trump expound on his prep school as being like combat and his misunderstanding of the military generally would make Paladino’s head explode.
//sorta I don’t see Donald Trump being able to campaign with a combat veteran unless Trump was able to defer to him in at least small ways.
re: #71 Dark_Falcon
No, it wouldn’t be awful. Kaisch wouldn’t pick some crazy teabagger, he’d pick someone within the political mainstream.
And you know this how? Look at some of the people Kasich has appointed to various positions in Ohio (and some of them he appointed to boards, then made the boards private and non-accountable) and get back to me. Look up the “Jobs Ohio” history.
Mark Kvamme was Kasich’s first pick to lead to Ohio Department of Development. But it was soon revealed that Kvamme was constitutionally ineligible to serve in that role, so Assistant Director Kristi Tanner ended up signing all the documents to prevent any problems when Kvamme eventually left.
Kvamme was replaced by James Leftwich, who lasted a whole 106 days before being replaced by Christiane Schmenk.
Kvamme took over at head of JobsOhio and Leftwich was hired back as a consultant for Kasich. Both quit their jobs the same week we reported that Leftwich was effectively selling access to Third Frontier and JobsOhio through his new consulting company.

The point? Clinton-bashing. Any Clinton, any excuse. However popular Bill might have been at the end of his term, It would be political malpractice to let any residual negatives - even decades-old ones - go unexploited just in case there are any waverers out there needing some “rationale” to vote against Hillary.
