Video: John Oliver on the Absurd Scandal Gap Between Clinton and Trump

Somehow, I doubt that’s what they were doing, though I could be wrong; I see police cruisers that are working road construction and other places where they are needing to be conspicious, but stationary (not running traffic) for long periods of time that pop their hoods open all the time when it’s warm/hot here in Nashville, even at night.

Yeah, that’s what started my digging. I’ve seen a sheriff’s deputy, who was a family friend, pop the hood on a vehicle because he was worried about it overheating.

If Trump doesn’t pass gas on stage, the media is going to declare him the winner.
I’m going to copy the text from here because it’s important to keep in mind:
Sam Wang notes:
1. What commentators think about “exceeding expectations” is an anti-indicator. Here is survey data on who was expected to do better in past debates.
CNN/Gallup: debate expectations gaps
16: HRC +10
12: BHO +25
08: BHO +25
04: Bush +13
00: Gore +8
96: WJC +52
92: WJC +8
84: RWR: +39— Will Jordan (@williamjordann) September 23, 2016
Notice a pattern: all of these candidates ended up winning the popular vote. The explanation is simple: people can tell who the stronger candidate is, and expect that person to do well.
Think about this for a moment. What does it mean for a candidate to “exceed expectations”? It usually means that he/she was the weaker candidate to begin with. So if some commentator emits hot gas about either candidate doing better than expected, there is a good chance that candidate will be the loser in November.

Great lies. Wonderful lies. Big lies. The biggest of lies.
This is a good, detailed, and entertaining look at the scandals. But John is being very naive when he says that if Hillary had carried two Blackberries there would have been no scandal. Nothing she does or doesn’t do ever prevents a scandal, and this one is not even close.
Consider. Someone would have sent her work stuff on her home Blackberry - and personal stuff on her work Blackberry. Someone would have sent something that included arguably classified stuff to the home Blackberry and to the work Blackberry (remember the work account wasn’t for classified material either). So obviously she is channeling things through her home Blackberry in order to hide them and is secretive and dishonest. She is putting the nation at risk by receiving emails that might include material that might be classified. None of the accusations go away or get any better no matter what she does, because people do send send the wrong stuff to the wrong email accounts.

I can’t see the picture, but this was written last week about Hillary being flawed:
I’m officially done with the “she’s so flawed but she is the lesser of two evils” rhetoric. Cause, you know, I’m flawed. And you are flawed. And Bernie Sanders is flawed and Barack Obama is flawed and even Michelle Obama is flawed. But the difference between all of them and me—and probably you, is that they have all given their flawed lives to public service. And now, they are all working together in their inevitably flawed ways, to save all of us, and the whole world from a sociopathic narcissist. And every day, Hillary puts a hopefully unflawed bullet proof vest on her flawed and aging and sometimes unsmiling self and stands up in front of people who have been incited by her opponent to shoot her, and she says calm and rational and intelligent (and sometimes flawed) things about how to make a difference. In my book that makes her a fucking rock star. And in the words of another flawed and resilient rock star. There is a crack in everything. That’s where the light gets in.

At first, I read the text in the blue circle as “The Politico Circus”
BTW, for everyone that writes some variation of “If Hillary’s less than perfect she loses, but if Donald shows up tomorrow he wins” make sure you are doing two things tomorrow:
1. Being angry at everyone who declares Hillary the loser and Donald the winner.
2. Finding some way to help the Hillary campaign, even if it’s just donating.
I understand why Hillary can’t do this, but I wish she could just say, “You are applying Hillary Rules and I am no longer going to apologize for things - or repeatedly answer questions about things - that would be perfectly normal, non-scandalous behavior if any other politician did them.”
And then just answer “Hillary Rules” every time someone asks the same thing again.

Clearly mentally disturbed, unlike the Mall shooter this weekend, who was clearly a terrorist.//
A story with a little press, that’s going to be misinterpreted and misused:
Study: Earth’s roughly warmest in about 100,000 years
A new study paints a picture of an Earth that is warmer than it has been in about 120,000 years, and is locked into eventually hitting its hottest mark in more than 2 million years.
As part of her doctoral dissertation at Stanford University, Carolyn Snyder , now a climate policy official at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, created a continuous 2 million year temperature record, much longer than a previous 22,000 year record. Snyder’s temperature reconstruction, published Monday in the journal Nature , doesn’t estimate temperature for a single year, but averages 5,000-year time periods going back a couple million years.
[…]
The part I bold-faced is not in doubt. But that was not the only conclusion the author reached. It goes on:
Snyder said if climate factors are the same as in the past — and that’s a big if — Earth is already committed to another 7 degrees or so (about 4 degrees Celsius) of warming over the next few thousand years.
[…]
A fifth scientist, Michael Mann of Pennsylvania State University, called the study provocative and interesting but said he remains skeptical until more research confirms it. He found the future temperature calculations “so much higher than prevailing estimates that one has to consider it somewhat of an outlier.”
In lieu of the current flap about “fact checking” I guess we should give AP credit for getting multiple opinions on the letter in Nature. And indeed Mann’s take is that which the people over at RealClimate noted today (and they apparently knew this paper was coming as a few days prior they already posted a warning about using paleoclimate to calculate Earth system sensitivity (ESS)):
The Snyder Sensitivity Situation
The paper claims that ESS is ~9ºC and that this implies that the long term committed warming from today’s CO2 levels is a further 3-7ºC. This is simply wrong. [emp. in original]
The error in the letter in Nature will eventually be corrected in regards to the ESS estimate.
But I believe the bigger problem is that the nay-sayers will exploit and take out of context the criticisms.
There is no doubt about the value of the paleoclimate work. There is no doubt that current surface temperatures are higher than they’ve been since the peak of the last inter-glacial. All that is really wrong is the estimation of the ESS, and there the wrongness is just that a larger ESS is derived than by better attested methods.
The letter in Nature:

I read an article, which made sense to me, that the debate won’t really be about Trump because he is already very unpopular and the media constantly cover everything he says, so there isn’t much support for him that can be easily pealed away; Trump is already only polling about 41% in the RCP average. Instead the debate is Clinton’s opportunity to talk about her popular policy proposals, which the media don’t cover, to a wide audience, and hopefully add to her support and strengthen her lead.

They see these “rich” people like Trump who never appear to do any actual work, yet still have all the great toys and vacations and beautiful women and everything that they don’t have, even though they are busting their asses working and seeing nothing for the effort.

He already knows that he owes $400 million to DeutschBank, and the bank is slow-walking their settlement negotiations over how big a fine they have to pay to the US Govt. If he’s elected they get 2 Billion knocked off the fine, he gets forgiven the loan.
He already knows that his partners in developments in Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan and India are in serious legal trouble with the governments of those countries. He stands to gain or lose hundreds of millions of dollars from each one if the govt rules against them, and knows full well that they’ll go easy if the President of the United States makes it a condition of them getting whatever arms deal they’re after.
He already knows that hundreds of millions of dollars of Russian funding for his projects in the US is conditional on Putin not getting irritated and pulling that funding.

Deutsche Bank is for all practical purposes a Dead Man Walking….
Shares of Deutsche Bank got bashed 7.6% today, to €10.49 in Frankfurt, down 67% from April 2015, to the lowest level since they started trading on the Xetra exchange in 1992. They traded below that level in the early 1980s, but decades of inflation have whittled down the purchasing power so much that comparisons are meaningless.
Deutsche Bank’s 5-year default probability spiked to the highest level this year.
Its balance sheet, bloated with opaque risks, equals 58% of Germany’s GDP. It lost €6.8 billion last year. To hang on another day and to prop up Tier 1 capital, it has raised $20 billion in capital, in 2010 and 2014, by selling shares and diluted existing shareholders, and by issuing contingent convertible bonds.

Well, the media are certainly playing right along, as Jonathan Chait pointed out (sorry to keep repeating this, but it gets on my last nerve):
Amazingly, Trump has managed to blur the distinction between a blind trust and the opposite of a blind trust so thoroughly that the media is now repeating his own terms. “The Republican nominee has previously indicated,” reports Politico, “that he would place the businesses in a blind trust run by his children and executives.” Again, a “blind trust run by his children and executives” is not a thing.

I know there are a lot of people who have gravitated to the counter-memes of how life has improved so much under Obama, but like all these easy internet memes the assertions fall upon closer inspection.
We live in such a complex society, with our economic activity intricately linked across the globe.
The DeutscheBank problem is just the tip of an iceberg to a global financial problem that exists and which was not cured by the 2008 near-depression following the 2007 blow-off.
There are simply too many poorly reckoned debts out there. The paper electronic economy is, I fear, not been structurally redesigned as called for by the 2007/2008 collapse.
So much that is labeled “investment” is really speculation.
As in gambling.
And Drumpfskind illustrates (besides all the other ugliness) that so much of what is thought of as “wealth” is really bluffing and lying.
Some substantial portion of our citizenry do not understand our American economy. They hold false beliefs about money, about governance, and how they even survive.
