Surging in the polls, e.g., Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump separated by one point in latest ABC News/Washington Post poll,
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are separated by a single point in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll — one week after that survey showed Clinton holding a 12-point lead.
WaPo notices:
White Republicans are coming home to Donald Trump, at just the right time
[…]
The Post’s tracking poll, conducted with ABC News, has shown a much closer national race over the past few days, thanks in large part to Republican enthusiasm. “Greater Republican unity has buoyed Trump’s rising support,” our pollsters wrote of Sunday’s survey, which showed Trump behind by a single point. On Thursday, Trump trailed by six points. Because Republicans vote more consistently than Democrats (consistent voting correlates to age and income), more support from Republicans can quickly mean a more Trump-friendly pool of likely voters.

To celebrate Diwali I suppose Trump could cover himself in orange powder. But then again….

That is sad to hear. Was really hoping that enough Republicans would act in accordance with principles rather than out of party loyalty given how uniquely dangerous their candidate is this time around.

You know, at this point the most generous thing to say about Comey and his performance is that he’s a guy who cares about his reputation. The problem is that he absolutely shredded it Friday by trying to preempt Republican criticism that he cost them the election by not informing them about the emails on Weiner’s devices.

His standing is also getting worse in others. The IBD/TIPP poll that Trump was proudly touting on Monday as having him +2 now has Hillary ahead +4, been slipping steadily in her direction all week.

Clinton eeking out a victory by carrying the solid “Obama states” is not much of a victory. I still think we’re in for a very long haul of mess after mess by the Republicans in Congress spending day and night trying to impeach Clinton.
So the real problem is one of coattails and the apparent desire for Americans to have the country commit political suicide.

So why am I supporting Trump for president?
Because Trump is running for president of the United States and not Miss Congeniality, as I have reminded myriad people. Because Trump is a no-nonsense businessman who hires, fires, knows how to meet a payroll, and yes, he has declared bankruptcy, but he has taken calculated risks with his own capital and grown his business. (His most recent project, Trump International Hotel in Washington, DC has been completed under budget and ahead of schedule.) Because as a potential president with business acumen Trump will negotiate better trade deals for the United States than his opponent - trade deals that will improve the American economy and help put Americans back to work.
Because Trump supports the Second Amendment of the Constitution which will keep our mothers, daughters, sisters, and all women safer than dialing 9-1-1 and hoping help arrives before becoming the victim of rape, murder, or any other crime.
Because I want my two daughters, and all your daughters to enjoy the rights afforded by the First and Second Amendments to the United States Constitution. Because Trump has provided a list of potential jurists to the Supreme Court and none of their names are Barack Obama or Bill Clinton; because a Trump defeat will tip the balance of the Supreme Court to the far left for generations to come with the possibility of four appointments from the next president. As it is, the Founders would hardly recognize the country today.
OUR women. Because women need free speech and guns but not bodily autonomy or full equality under the law.

As much as I’d like a blowout win for Hillary, I think we need to be realistic in that just getting her in the White House is a major accomplishment. What the GOP will or won’t do is not in question, because even if she wins massively, they’ll still be massive dicks who will move Heaven and Earth to undermine her. Odds are we can’t win the House, so they will try to impeach her at least once. And odds are still even or good that we will win the Senate. So while we can keep hoping for the big win, I think we should not stress ourselves out that failing to attain it means we’ve lost.

I saw the theory put out there earlier on Twitter that Comey knows he can’t get a warrant to look at the emails, or if he can they’re likely not to contain anything that the earlier investigation didn’t find, so he’s trying to CYA by preventing future accusations that his silence about these emails lost Trump the election. That he may be a partisan hack, but he’s a self-aware one and wants to still have a career after this election.

I took another, now closer look at that recent SPLC report that includes Nawaz:
While I agree he’s a shifty fellow, here is one of the reasons SPLC gives for listing him as an anti-Muslim extremist:
According to a Jan. 24, 2014, report in The Guardian, Nawaz tweeted out a cartoon of Jesus and Muhammad — despite the fact that many Muslims see it as blasphemous to draw Muhammad. He said that he wanted “to carve out a space to be heard without constantly fearing the blasphemy charge.”
Really? Do they want to make the “drawing Muhammad is a blasphemy” nonsense a new normal?
SPLC dropped the ball here.
It could just as well be that Comey knew he couldn’t get a warrant, so he created this massive uproar in order to pressure a judge into granting one just to make the matter go away.

Yeah, I’d love to have the Senate, even if Chuck Schumer will be the guy in charge. All the more reason to GOTV. A White House and Senate victory would not end gridlock, but it would at the very least keep that gridlock in our favor, if only because it would prevent the GOP from getting creative with Congressional rules to do things like dismantle the ACA.

Then slow easy increments. Only one at a time

Oh, I’m sure the House GOP will contemplate impeachment regardless of who retains the Senate. But short of a major victory in two years, they won’t have the votes to convict, which makes impeachment every bit the suicidal move it has been for the last 8 years. If anything, I imagine Ryan is gonna drink himself into the same stupor Boehner did trying to convince the base that impeachment is not happening.

If they didn’t have authority to look for unrelated emails on Weiner’s laptop and have still not gotten a warrant, that’s a huge fucking mistake. And then for Comey to write that letter knowing that they don’t have anything of significance is just negligent. Especially before an election.

I plan to add another day. The hard part for me is it will be on a day when I open the shop. So far my jogging days have been when the shop is closed (and I separated those days for this purpose.) Earlier in the morning will work. I just have to decide to make it work.

I think trying to impeach for historical events before being elected will not sit well with lots of people. It will smack of overturning the will of the people / election results rather than punishment for crimes committed while in office

Considering the inside sources saying that the emails aren’t even listed to or from Hillary, but instead are either ones forwarded by Huma or between Huma and other Clinton aides, it’s possible a judge wouldn’t grant a warrant. You’re already thinking further ahead than most of the GOP base is. They’re probably already thinking up long lists of “charges” that go back to Whitewater. And Chaffetz insists he’s got “years” of stuff to investigate, so odds are we’re going to see the GOP spend the next 4 years relitigating the past 20 years.

Bull and crap. I’ll take her winning, period. The flip side to “Republicans have a mandate at 50%+1 but Democrats don’t with 300+ EVs ” is that I don’t have to give a shit what Republicans think.
Going by my own little circle of relationships, nothing much has changed in regards to how people will vote. I have not seen anyone I know personally make a statement that they have made a choice for whom to vote since the primaries.
In some ways the past 7 or 8 months have all been about entertainment, a way to keep news headlines being generated and clicks being done on websites.
Essentially, we knew that Hillary was unpopular compared to Obama but the Democratic party still went with her. I was never for her campaign, never voted for her, but I realize that some people are really into Hillary being the nominee, so it’s hardly something I would try hard to undo. And sure enough I didn’t vote for the President candidate in the primary. I’m fine with Hillary being President - I don’t believe the now 3 decades old long campaign against here had but a mote of legitimacy to begin with.
But I’m getting older and the day will come (hopefully not too soon, but it is coming) when I will be old and feeble and need to be taken care of… at a time when SS is expected to run into the red.
Anyway, that makes me think about what I really want out of my government, and what I want is a government that is run well and works on the few really big problems we have, like funding retirement and healthcare.
But that is not what we’ll get for governance if our leaders are primarily fighting battles that, when one looks underneath the mess, are really about the great culture war we’ve been in since forever (at least in this country since WWII).
My facebook wall is filled with people who are irrationally hating Hillary. This is an emotional response that has been programmed, but the programming was not just about Hillary but about how “the media” or “the librul” or “the elite” are somehow evil, wrong, and deceitful.
This goes right back to the drum that I have been beating for some time: that the angst that drives people to wear a “Donald J. Trump” hat and go to his rallies and hate on everybody is, down deep, really about the fear from the loss of God. That death is coming for us all, and there is nothing we can really do about it.

The next two years is going to be the GOP trying to shore up their base and get them to the polls with illusory promises of impeachment trials taking up the last year of Hillary’s first term. Them damned Democrats are standing in their way, so a vote for a Republican Senate is a vote to put Hillary in jail.

I mean midterms do typically favor the party out of power but ‘18 needs not to be a repeat of ‘10 and if we get to it, ‘22 not of ‘14. 2020 is going to be a very important election since a lot will be at stake.

I plan to add another day. The hard part for me is it will be on a day when I open the shop. So far my jogging days have been when the shop is closed (and I separated those days for this purpose.) Earlier in the morning will work. I just have to decide to make it work.
Then I can be open 7 days a week! Not.
Approach early mornings the same way. Build up a bit at a time and only one change at a time. . First try doing it on a non run day. Then a current run day.
Then when you add the day you’re already getting up at the right time.
Or maybe start doing the earlier mornings at less distance and time so you’re not rushed. Then build…just creatively keep moving forward

The current big-sized, dark and ominous headline for YNET News’ Hebrew homepage (AKA Israel’s chief source of news):חקירת קלינטון: “ייבחנו 650 אלף מיילים בלפטופ” - Clinton’s investigation: 650,000 laptop mails will be examined”.
[Embedded content]
YNET has been accused for the past few months of having an unfair Anti-Trump / Pro-Hillary perspective, so it’s like now they’re trying to undo that at every turn…
“Will be examined,” as if its a foregone conclusion that a judge will grant a warrant.
re: #69 freetoken
This goes right back to the drum that I have been beating for some time: that the angst that drives people to wear a “Donald J. Trump” hat and go to his rallies and hate on everybody is, down deep, really about the fear from the loss of God. That death is coming for us all, and there is nothing we can really do about it.
Jeebus. That’s freakin’ bleak.

Yeah, it’s practically assumed that an investigation is all but launched.
Article also implies that there may be tens of thousands of damning Hillary emails in play.
re: #76 Targetpractice
The next two years is going to be the GOP trying to shore up their base and get them to the polls with illusory promises of impeachment trials taking up the last year of Hillary’s first term. Them damned Democrats are standing in their way, so a vote for a Republican Senate is a vote to put Hillary in jail.
We’re going to have yet again a very interesting Senate race here in Va. What I wonder about is if Clinton wins. Does Terry Mac appoint someone who will definitely replace Kaine or just a short-term caretaker like we saw with Biden’s seat before Chris Coons officially replaced him.

Hard to say, but I’d like to hope he’s smart enough to find somebody he thinks could win election to his own term in a couple years.

Q: Why might Trump refuse to concede?
A: While experts are divided, a lifetime spent never hearing the word “no” from anyone is probably a good guess.
Q: Could there be rioting?
A: Not technically, since the individuals causing property damage and starting fires will most likely be white.
Q: What will happen to Clinton if Trump doesn’t concede?
A: She will become president of the United States on January 20, 2017.

Won’t be close enough in the EC for that to matter.

Despite the panicking, including me, I think election night will go relatively smoothly.
I just can’t get worked up about it anymore. I’ve donated, I’ve voted, I’ve tried to get the correct info out there. There is nothing more I can do. I just have to have faith (something I don’t always have) this country will reject the racist, fascist, orange twat.

Trump basically has to win every “toss-up” state to win by the thinnest of margins. In other words the election ends the moment GA, FL, OH, AZ, or NC turn blue. The more states he loses after that, the more ridiculous the “rigged” argument becomes.

Did you see this? At first it was just a photo going around on Twitter, but now it’s confirmed:
There needs to be a hell of a lot of hate in your heart to think lynching people on Halloween is funny. And yet, here we are, Miami. A homeowner in Three Lakes, a small community in suburban Kendall, is celebrating the holiday by lynching two black-looking dummies in his or her yard.
It’s also impossible to ignore what’s just in front of the display on the same lawn: A “Trump/Pence 2016” sign.
The Three Lakes Property Owners Association, which governs the small community off the Shula Expressway at SW 120th Street, has confirmed to New Times that the photo is authentic.

Pre-xactly, to believe Trump can win is to believe that the polls have been so wildly inaccurate that he’s capable of winning states that have been viewed as out of his reach for months. For instance, based upon 270towin’s map, even if Trump wins FL, GA, AZ, OH, and NC, he still needs WI to seal the deal. Without that, Hillary still wins by 279. He would have to win either PA or VA, two states where he has only ever been ahead by the thinnest of margins and not since the first debate.

That is a good point. Sort of speaks to what I’ve been feeling for a while- Trump needs a lot to go right for him on election day and I just don’t see it. He may win some of those states listed but I just don’t see him winning enough to seal the deal. I’m honestly still of the thought that Trump might underperform his final poll results to some extent due to his weak groundgame and her strong one and his past of underperforming on game day. I understand why people are nervous though. A lot is at stake here.

It will be very interesting to see what the turnout will be this year. Will we have a (modern) record low turnout of voters? Or will we have a surprise surge?
re: #57 dangerman
I was thinking of her. She mentioned she wasn’t packing running gear for the trip. 😞
So your walking is the good base. The jogging on top of that. Two days is good
Then slow easy increments. Only one at a time
Add a bit of distance or time. Or better add a day of jogging so it’s three of seven. Then go to every other day…as long as it takes to get there easilyI find it best to run a bit less than i think I can. I enjoy it more. Stick to it. And am motivated to find the next increase.
Any program you stay with is better than one you dont
My company has done two Fitbit challenges this year. If you joined the first one you got a Fitbit for free as well. The recent one is “Walktober” and I set a personal goal of getting a leaf (6k, 8k, or 10k steps per day) on 25 of the days in the challenge.
This has been good for getting me to do hikes on weekends, or an after work walk in order to get the necessary steps for 10,000 (~5 miles) that day since a usual work day is 4-6,000 steps. I also have a stationary bike in my apartment as the emergency backup since 30-40 minutes on it at a 15-16mph clip converts as a lot of steps.
I also do longer hikes on weekends and have a few 20,000+ step days in as well. And since I lug a camera along I usually get some decent wildlife or plant pictures as well.

I’m expecting two things to happen: Trump to underperform and third party votes to end up being a non-issue in most states. Nate still has Johnson above 5% of the vote and I don’t think he’ll manage that high, 3% is he’s lucky but likely lower than that. The question is where those votes go and I suspect they’ll either go to Hillary or just stay home.

Wind, rain thunder and lightning in Philly. :(
Honestly, I haven’t spoken with a ton of voters but I think a lot of Trump’s comments about women and his general attitude has pissed off a lot of women voters. That’s something that can’t be underestimated here either. And I think equally a lot of women are thrilled to have the first chance to make a woman president especially against a big like Trump. We’ll see what happens but I remain optimistic. Sam Wang made an interesting observation. Hillary is the first person since Dwight Eisenhower in 1952 to consistently lead throughout polling. Hillary is in fact ahead of where Obama was against Romney four years ago and personally I think her game is much closer to his than Trump’s is to Romney’s.

That’s my real problem. If this were a normal D vs. R presidential race with these kinds of polling margins, I would have no real problem. Having any Republican as president would be awful, but the low probability would sufficiently mitigate the risk.
With Trump as the nominee, the downside of his winning the presidency is incalculable, so the low odds of it happening aren’t enough to offset that risk.
All sane people are being obliged to play Russian roulette in this election, and it doesn’t really matter that the odds of the equivalent to a bullet in the brain are much less than 1/6.

That sounds great. Whatever motivates you to go. Just go.
Hey a great idea for a slogan ” just do it”. Taken maybe?

Interesting analysis of past October ‘surprises” and how they effected or didn’t effect the final result. Honestly, I’m not seeing any huge game changers and I don’t see what we saw on Friday as one either.
re: #165 HappyWarrior

Good for you! In the most literal sense.
And I forgot to add that it’s simply good to get in the habit of getting walking in, or simply finding a reason to go walk and get in the steps. It’s fairly low impact, but it does help keep you healthy, especially if you add some dietary control along with it*.
And given some recent health concerns being in non-awful physical shape is something my doctors have approved of. Weight still not where I want it, but the A1C and other numbers are headed in the proper direction.

I found too that diet just naturally changed as fitness effort increased. Not even actual fitness. Just the effort.
Plus I started to evaluate food in terms of impact on the next days miles. It wasn’t guilt so much as I didn’t want it so badly when i active consciously thought about it

I think two Bushies. One actually was Comey’s predecessor as Deputy AG. Forget the other guy’s role. I’d be much more worried about this honestly if Comey was just being criticized by Democratic officials but he’s getting it from Republican ones too.

Well, if the the career people are good enough, it ought to take them a day to diff those emails against those they know. Filter down to those with Clinton’s name, and start from there.

There are two other recent Florida polls- one showing a solid Clinton lead 48-44 from PPP, and one showing a big Clinton lead 50-37 from St. Leo. But Politico only considers Republican partisan polls and not Democratic ones to be “reliable.”

What makes me feel good about Florida is its diversity. In fact, I think Clinton may win by a bigger margin than Obama has. Remember he didn’t even beat Romney by a single percent there and beat McCain by just under three. I really am hoping though that Rubio goes down with Trump too. I was disappointed that the DSCC doesn’t have him as a big target.

Yeah, this news sent me back into a funk - I have no idea what the hell info - if any - the FBI search of (I presume) Weiner’s computer will turn up, but I’m pretty sure the media spin on this is going to be quite a simple one: HILLARY EMAIL FBI WARRANT!!!1!1!!! - with more sneering bluster from Donald Trump about “criminal activity!” and “Crooked Hillary”, which of course, will get just as much coverage. And this just a week or so before the election: just the right timing so that any serious review of the emails won’t be done til after the polling. Perfect ratfucking timing.
Great.

I sort of felt that way… but recently I’ve been doing a lot of shopping on Amazon. Adding some stuff I might get at the local store but the prices on Amazon have been too good. For example, the Ghirardelli cocoa/hot chocolate packs are one or two dollars more expensive at the local store. All this little stuff adds up over a year, to cover the $99 cost of Prime.
I’ve been on the Laughing Dead Facebook page for a bit. I keep snickering at the LULZ causing my wife to keep asking ‘What you laughing at?’ Then I yell at her ‘You just said you weren’t watching this show any more!’

It’s pretty rare for people to choose POP as their email type these days, and especially people in Huma’s position where she needs to be able to read email in many different locations.
Then, if they are all duplicates, the FBI has no excuse for not saying so immediately. That’s the first thing they should do, code an automated search against the established database of known emails. If they come back with this result after the election then it exposes an institutional effort within the Bureau to influence the outcome.
A dental assistant at the Phoenix VA ran into three men handing out Bibles in the hallway. He ignored them, but when he passed by again, they were still there.
He confronted them and an argument ensued (proselytising is not permitted on Federal property).
The VA Police (Federal officers, not rent-a-cops) intervened, and threw the dental assistant out of the hospital.
The Bible thumpers had no permit to be in the hospital doing what they were doing. The dental assistant being thrown out would have caused more delays in seeking care.
The VA Police officers stood up for people breaking the law and VA regulations, and not for the employee who had every right to be there.
A complaint to the MRFF drew a response from the hospital “we’re sorry if anyone was offended” (spit).
I have not run into this in VA hospitals, but if I did, I would be just as outraged as the VA employee in this article. Ignoring violations of rights only erodes those rights.

It’s Nebraska.
Your district is going for Drumpfskind. The one around Omaha is going for Clinton.
Out here in California I’m not sure polls are even allowed. The 538 model had Drumpfskind with less than a .1% chance of winning this state since the convention. That percentage will never budge because Silver’s model doesn’t allow for absolute zero. Which is Drumpfskind’s chances here.
And no poll was necessary.

This is why I don’t figure there’s anything in there. If they suspected they had a treasure trove on their hands, they would not have waited until two weeks before the election to hit up a judge for a warrant.

re: #286 HappyWarrior
Wouldn’t surprise me if they do.
It’s all in the timing, as I’ve said: - Comey’s “email” bullshit was timed quite well: it got the media obsessing in their usual asinine manner, took a lot of the wind out of the “inevitable Hillary victory” meme, got the Deplorables all fired up - all with just under a week to go. If the Dem campaign has a bomb ready to go (and/or a major national media bllitz, which has been fairly absent: I know I live in and view the NYC Metro media market: I can’t recall seeing one Clinton ad - and only a few of the lame Trump-generality ones), they better do it damn quick to get the narrative flow back; otherwise it IS going to be “all emails, all the time” - no matter what is ACTUALLY in them.
I still think the best attack would be to go straight for the “Deplorable” vote: point out the Trump campaign’s “alt-right” bigot-base in graphic terms and make him own the hatemongering. Tying him to actual Nazis isn’t (disgracefully for the country) all that hard.

Had a thought about these newly-discovered emails — if Huma was using the IMAP email protocol, they’re almost certainly duplicates of what was on the server, because that’s how IMAP works. It’s pretty rare for people to choose POP as their email type these days, and especially people in Huma’s position where she needs to be able to read email in many different locations.
If she was using POP3 then whoever got her set up was a moron. If she was using IMAP then it is likely mostly duplicates however if it hadn’t been synced to the server in a while it is possible it might hold some messages that were not available on the server any longer.
I know they were running a Microsoft exchange server and my guess is they were either running outlook on the client side if it was windows in which case it was neither pop or imap and if the machine was an Apple then they were probably connecting via EWS. The only likely way i can think of that a large number of emails are available on the client that were not available on the server is if she got one of those pop ups from outlook asking if she wanted to archive old emails and said yes. That will actually pull the emails from the server and store them locally.
CNN reporting FBI just now got a warrant to search the emails.

Hey Gang,
I’m confident in a Clinton win, but let’s not go spiking the ball quite yet. I’m not thinking it’s going to be the blowout that I had initially thought, but I’m convinced that Hillary and the DNC is going to push back effectively and the fact that this is a big nothing-burger will come out.
The problem is that people keep hearing “Clinton - Email - FBI” and presume that there is something there. I’m doing the best I can to educate people in a way that doesn’t attack them, to attract them to vote for Hillary.
I also suspect that this last week is going to be a roller-coaster, with at least one more story to break on Trump, and him saying something so stupid that some people simply won’t vote for him. (and I’m fine with then not voting for Hillary, as long as they don’t vote for Trump)
Keep in mind that Donald pretty much has to win ALL the toss-up states, we have a number of paths to 270, talk to people like we’re 1-2 points down and get them to vote Dem, or at least not for Trump and it will all be fine on the 9th.
And is it just me, or did that trumpet player in the band look a LOT like Richard Belzer?

Well. They originally turned him down because they weren’t looking for that “look”. Only after the unsavory media attention did they take him. Jerks.

That’s what was suggested after 9/11, and what I would support.

And that is really what it is.

Rizzo fouls onto Sheffield Avenue. Retired on a fly ball and the fist inning ends.
Fist inning?
I’m afraid to ask.

My favorite anachronism was in A Christmas Story when the commercial talks about “choclatey Ovaltine.” I can remember when chocolate Ovaltine came out—the early 60’s sometime. It was only malt in Ralphie’s time.

There was a great story on CBS this morning about two friends with Downs Syndrome. The two of them competed in the Special Olympics together, but what the story was showing was the two of them acting out the various parts for a zombie movie they were hoping to make.
