Now Trump Wants to Evict the Press From the White House

Say goodbye to the First Amendment, folks
Politics • Views: 44,662

The transformation of the United States from a representative democracy to an authoritarian banana republic ruled by an unstable egomaniac is accelerating. In classic despot style, Donald Trump has labeled the independent press as “the enemy,” and is now preparing to evict journalists from the White House.

According to three senior officials on the transition team, a plan to evict the press corps from the White House is under serious consideration by the incoming Trump Administration. If the plan goes through, one of the officials said, the media will be removed from the cozy confines of the White House press room, where it has worked for several decades. Members of the press will be relocated to the White House Conference Center—near Lafayette Square—or to a space in the Old Executive Office Building, next door to the White House.

“There has been no decision,” Sean Spicer, Trump’s press secretary, said about the plan today. But Spicer acknowledged that “there has been some discussion about how to do it.”

Of course, Trump’s incoming White House press secretary is trying to spin this as a way to help the media.

Spicer cast the possible relocation of the press corps as a matter, in part, of logistics. “There’s been so much interest in covering a President Donald Trump,” he said. “A question is: Is a room that has forty-nine seats adequate? When we had that press conference the other day, we had thousands of requests, and we capped it at four hundred. Is there an opportunity to potentially allow more members of the media to be part of this? That’s something we’re discussing.”

Maybe there would have been more room for the media at that last press conference if they hadn’t packed it with Trump staffers and boosters who applauded every talking point from the Dear Leader.

But another unnamed member of this gang of villains can’t help boasting about the true motive.

Another senior official, however, suggested a more pointed motivation for the move. According to the official, the potential relocation reflected a view within the transition team that coverage of Trump has been so hostile as to indicate that the press has abandoned its role as neutral observer.

“They are the opposition party,” a senior official says. “I want ‘em out of the building. We are taking back the press room.”

Oh yes, they fellated Trump endlessly during the campaign while screeching non stop about Hillarys emails but they’re the “opposition party”.

Makes perfect sense.

The press, by definition, should be adversarial in covering any government activity, including the White House, not stenographers.

Surely all the people who thought Obama wasn’t transparent enough will be up in arms at this attempt to limit access to the White House. Surely.

The Don doesn’t know how this all works. Of course his handlers will try to let him get away with this approach to the media, but what it really is going to do is challenge the media like they maybe haven’t been in years.

The media got caught napping in the “W” Bush years. They were lazy with Obama going on whatever sold.

Now they have a president trying to make it all about them…they are a problem in this country…they are an enemy.

Trump is asking for a fight. I sure hope they grow some muscles and give him a big one. We need a TKO!

Imagine the right wing screeching that would have followed if Obama had kicked the press out of the White House in 2013…

As it turns out they are fine with a dictator so long as he is on their side.

Honestly, kicking the press out of the White House might be the best outcome we could hope for. If they have no access left to worry about losing, that’s one less type of leverage Trump has on them.

The reason for hope is that many Republicans are aware that taking healthcare coverage away from tens of millions of people is bad politics, no matter how badly they want to. That is the quandry they are in now whereas they could’ve easily repealed Obamacare four years ago with Romney as President because the exchanges hadn’t opened yet.

Both if I remember right were the ability to predict the reaction of a large group/population to certain stimuli.

Do not forget how this works. These demonstrations place heat on Congress Representatives and Senators. They are the ones that will worry because it is their asses in the seats that control congress. Enough people get pissed in these states and maybe some of them getting booted and it helps toward the goal of getting congress back, hopefully in 2018.

And, I always think there are 3 to 4 people at home watching and agreeing with every 1 protester that gets out in public.

In Columbus…

The Columbus Dispatch - Sister March proceeding down Broad Street, will finish with Statehouse rally

An estimated 1,500 women from across Ohio are marching together down Broad Street this afternoon as a demonstration in support of women’s rights and gender equality.

The mile-long Sister March will end with a rally at the Statehouse.

A 6 p.m. reception will follow at the Sheraton, featuring a panel of speakers, opportunities to meet elected officials and other educational materials. Space is limited and doors will open at 3:30 p.m.

Rhiannon Childs, 38,of Columbus, and Lindsey Shriver, 27, of Groveport coordinated the statewide event as an offshoot of the national Women’s March on Washington. About 200,000 women are expected to attend that event on Saturday.

Organizers say both events were planned in response to comments made by President-elect Donald Trump about women and other minority groups during his campaign. His inauguration is Friday.

Demonstrators gather on Sunday for the Sister March down Broad Street.
Diana Angus of the North Side holds a sign she made at home before the start of the Ohio Sister March in Columbus on Sunday.

Associated…from Thursday…

The Columbus Dispatch - Women knit ‘pussyhats’ for women’s rights march in Washington

Stephanie Craddock Sherwood hadn’t knitted in almost six years.

On Tuesday night, however, she found herself at Wholly Craft in the Clintonville neighborhood holding two large wooden needles attached to light-pink yarn.

“If there was ever a time to rejoin the ranks of knitters, it’s now,” she said.

Craddock Sherwood will work to finish her hat — which features pointy, catlike ears — in time to wear Jan. 21 during the Women’s March on Washington.

Organizers of the march hope to see tens of thousands of the pink “pussyhats” at the gathering, planned via social media in the wake of Donald Trump’s Nov. 8 election as president.

“The hats are cat-shaped and using a word that was meant to disempower women by our president-elect,” said Wholly Craft event coordinator Beth Boring, referring to the “Access Hollywood” video released during the presidential campaign in which Trump made lewd comments about women.

“It’s being reclaimed by women.”

The national event, at its core, centers on women’s rights. (Local “sister marches” are planned in cities throughout the country, including one Sunday in Columbus.)

The Pussyhat Project, started by two California women, originated in late November with a mission to outfit every march participant with a handmade pink cat hat.

According to the project website, the knit (or, in some cases, fleece) beanies serve a dual purpose: to create a collective visual statement and provide people who cannot be in the nation’s capital a way to represent themselves.

Co-founder Jayna Zweiman told The Washington Post that the hats allow wearers “to take a stand in their daily life without having to say a word.”

Isabel Andrews, in the foreground, joins other knitters at Wholly Craft for a local gathering of the Pussyhat Project. Andrews knitted a scarf on Tuesday bearing the logo of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign.

This list is completely baffling based on it being from 1985.

The B-52s were a completely apolitical group who released mostly party music
Madness: New wave, nothing even resembling violence.
Strangers - I’m guessing this is actually Stranglers, since they were the only rock act during the 80s with a similar name
The Sticks - That is probably Styx, but promoting violence?
Julio Iglesias - Neofascism - wat?
Manish Machine - I have no clue on this one. Maybe Miami Sound Machine?

People seem to think subtle strategies will take Trump down, like encouraging his “health care for everybody” statements to provoke a war with the GOP establishment.

It DOES NOT work like this, and I don’t know how many times this lesson needs to be learned. The way to deal with Trump is to confront, embarrass, mock, humiliate him at every opportunity. When he’s humiliated and exposed as a fraud he loses it, because egomania is the central fact of his being. We need to push him in that direction. If you pretend to take him seriously you’re doing exactly what he wants, and you’ll never beat him this way.

re: #324 Charles Johnson

Trump doesn’t have a plan. Never did.

He’s using this as a diversion to the real issue - all his ties to Russia. His being compromised and being Putin’s puppet. And that the Russians manipulated the election outcome through a concerted agitprop campaign. Combine that with some at the FBI pushing a partisan political agenda, and you had a perfect storm that benefits no one but Putin.

Trump’s got to divert attention from the swirling shitstorm, so he offers up this claptrap about how he’s going to provide universal coverage.

It’s all so much bullshit.

If it was about providing universal coverage, there’d be no need to repeal Obamacare, particularly if the GOP isn’t going single payer. In fact, the GOP could expand Obamacare further - by raising the income thresholds for those who could get into Medicaid if they don’t qualify for the marketplace plans, as well as larger subsidies.

They wouldn’t do such a thing, because the GOP plans (such as they are) are all about providing less coverage that ends up costing more. The GOP fought tooth and nail to thwart Medicaid expansion, even though that was the biggest component to expanding coverage. The GOP wont go for any kind of health care expansion, not when their idea of coverage is HSAs that help no one but those who are already well off.

This is all just a shell game and Trump thinks he can fool enough people with this dumbassery.

I heard a clip of him talking just after he acquired Eastern Air to start his Trump Shuttle. He basically said, “I’m going to revolutionize the flying experience, going to do it bigger and better than anyone else.’ The first flights had free champagne and a quartet playing classical music. Cabins had wood panelling and the fixtures were all gold plated. Started in 1989, call it bad timing for operating when the first gulf war got underway, or just poor management, it never made a profit and collapsed in ‘92.

re: #350 Charles Johnson

People seem to think subtle strategies will take Trump down, like encouraging his “health care for everybody” statements to provoke a war with the GOP establishment.

It DOES NOT work like this, and I don’t know how many times this lesson needs to be learned. The way to deal with Trump is to confront, embarrass, mock, humiliate him at every opportunity. When he’s humiliated and exposed as a fraud he loses it, because egomania is the central fact of his being. We need to push him in that direction. If you pretend to take him seriously you’re doing exactly what he wants, and you’ll never beat him this way.

+ Numbers. As in numbers of us. Examples-Civil rights, anti Vietnam. And learn where the Tea Party prevailed vs where Occupy failed. IMHO very important modern retail politics lessons there.

Vaporware. It’ll get announced, released, but never actually put to a vote.

re: #365 Barefoot Grin

He entered the most competitive air segment with absolutely no experience about how to run an airline. Thinking that you can offer luxury on a segment that has tight margins to begin with was a fool’s errand, and he was losing money by the boatload.

He thought he could do the same with casinos, and he lost billions (or other people’s billions) at a time when other casinos were making bank all over the place. He did far worse than his peers in Atlantic City, let alone the casino business generally.

Outside real estate, Trump failed - a lot. He also got other people to pay for his failure.

As the soon to be liar in chief, that means the US will be paying for his failures. A lot.

And all the scorn that Obama received for “if you like your doctor…” will magically not happen to Trump’s promises of “universal health insurance.”

The New York Times has pretty much capitulated to Donald Trump now.

Really—quote Frank Luntz (I thought Trump hated his sorry ass anyway) and then put “important work” in scare quotes. Ugh.

Wow—he certainly answered a lot of questions (uh huh)—great followups, Costa.

it remains unclear…
He declined to discuss…
“I won’t tell you how…”
But it remains unclear from either Trump’s comments in the interview…
Trump did not say how his program overlaps…
He did not elaborate on that view…
Trump waved away the suggestion that such activity could lead to market volatility on Wall Street…
Trump’s goal is uncertain…
He did not disclose what was to come on those fronts…

Soft, chubby puff pastry… I wish the clip were longer. At the end it looks like he’s having a little trouble standing upright.
