Gosh, I don’t know why he would call them the “opposition party” since they endlessly kissed his ass and tore Hillary to pieces with their constant lying about her e-mails!

So, Mike Coffman (R - CO) of Colorado’s 6th Congressional District went to meet with constituents today. It was not what he and his staff had planned.

When Berthie Ruoff arrived at the Aurora Central Library to meet with Congressman Mike Coffman, she was hopeful to find encouraging answers about the impending changes to the Affordable Care Act.

“My husband passed away and the only way I was able to get insurance was through the Affordable Care Act, Obamacare,” Ruoff said.

[…]

Coffman’s chief of staff, Ben Stein, sent a statement addressing what happened Saturday afternoon. The statement says the Congressman’s community event was not a town hall.

“Rep. Mike Coffman routinely hosts constituent one on one meetings across the district. Constituents are invited to meet individually with the congressman to express their opinions, seek help with a range of issues, and discuss legislation. Given the volume of people who came, the Congressman met with four people at a time for five minutes each for a total of more than 70 constituents,” the statement said.

Ruoff was not one of them.

“I am trying to get an answer and I can’t even get in,” Ruoff said.

More: Congressman Coffman leaves frustrated crowd.

The crowd started singing.

From the previous thread:

re: #265 Patricia Kayden

What happens when Rightwingers shut down a campus event featuring unpopular speech of Liberal guests? Not sure if this is a good idea. Can’t stand either of them, but shutting them down invites retaliation, imho.

They weren’t “shut down.”

What actually happened is protesters showed up (as is their I Amendment right), and the College Republicans cancelled the event. The College Republicans then went out with a bullhorn to tell everyone (protesters and people waiting to get in) that the event was cancelled.

That was then spun into “liberals shut down the event” from “Republicans cancelled the event.”

Expect more of this, and more town hall cancellations as GOP legistors retreat to their ivory towers and Fox/Breitbart/SMOTI/Rush ‘n Lumpy echo chambers.

From UC Davis on Facebook:

Facebook Post

After consulting with UC Davis Police Department and UC Davis Student Affairs officials, the Davis College Republicans canceled tonight’s event featuring Breitbart columnist Milo Yiannopoulos. The decision was made at about 7:00 pm, 30 minutes prior to the scheduled start of the event, after a large number of protesters blocked access to the venue, and it was determined that it was no longer feasible to continue with the event safely.

The Chancellor then goes on about “respect for all views, yadayadaya”

Milo went on a whine fest about how UC Davis “lied about the College Republicans cancelling the event.”

Jennifer Holliday Pulls Out of Trump Inauguration, Apologizes to LGBT Community

…the “Dreamgirls” star apologized to the LGBT community, saying she was “uneducated on the issues that affect every American at this crucial time in history and for causing such dismay and heartbreak to my fans.”

“My only choice must now be to stand with the LGBT Community and to state unequivocally that I WILL NOT PERFORM FOR THE WELCOME CONCERT OR FOR ANY OF THE INAUGURATION FESTIVITIES!”

Holliday ends her letter telling her gay fans: “Please know that I HEAR YOU and I feel your pain. The LGBT Community was mostly responsible for birthing my career and I am deeply indebted to you… You have loved me faithfully and unconditionally and for so many years you provided me with work even though my star had long since faded.”

Note the College Republicans cancelled, but somehow it’s the protesters’ faults for exercising their own free speech rights.

Note also the College Republicans invited the fascist and the thief in the first place. They’re whigning because they were protested?

That would be a better way of handling hate speech — ban it from your campus. Of course, you’d end up with a dispute about what constitutes hate speech but so what?

An even better way to handle hate speech is to protest it: Exactly as was done at UC Davis. No one banned Milo or Martin. Their sponsor cancelled the event.

Free speech does not come without the consequences of that speech. Milo, Martin, and a lot of their fellow travellers want to be able to say anything at all they want without any sort of pushback or complaint. They are the special snowflakes they continually accuse liberals of being.

The old bigots in my Facebook timeline seem to be having problems with the blowback that Trump is getting.

They’ve not seen anything yet.

I think we can all agree by now that the ones who make the most noise about something (i.e. “you’re stifling my free speech!”, “you’re a racist!”, “gays are abominations!”, “the election is rigged!”) are themselves guilty of it. Unfortunately, those who scream the most loudly also get the most attention.

Maybe the Dems can stand to be a little louder about our accomplishments and the wrongdoings of the Trump admin. Make ‘em listen.

Not to mention there’s no reason to worry about being denied access, thus no reason to temper their coverage. And these days, keeping them out of the press room won’t stop anything. Unless Trump gives up TV coverage altogether (not gonna happen).

Worse habits than I already have?

I went into the general store this morning, bought a couple lotto tickets, a small bottle of bourbon, cigarettes for myself and my wife.

After I handed over the money to the proprietor, I pointed out as the new vice-mayor I was still investigating vice.

There’s your problem right there. You’re supposed to promise to pay, but then renege and offer pennies on the dollar because the bourbon was not up to your standards (which you didn’t notice until you’d drank it all).

Interestingly enough, I live in a whole township of people who voted for Mr. Trump. Most of them bought Mr. Trump’s economic arguments (such as they were) and did not hear the racism and bigotry (because that was not broadcast on FOX).

I think you have to step back a level. Why do they believe these economic arguments so easily, and believe Trump when he would contradict himself on a daily basis? Why not believe Clinton when she had fully formed plans, was consistent, and obviously knew what she was talking about?

They’re not naive: they’re very selectively naive and very selectively cynical depending on what they want to be true. Straining at gnats and swallowing camels to preserve their predetermined worldview. They will change when reality hurts them or their families personally, but I fear not anytime before that.

We have a local newspaper that only is pro-Trump and anti-Clinton. We only have radio stations that blare right wing blowhards. Clinton plans or proposals were not printed in the local paper except when I wrote, and they will only print one letter a month from a reader, limited to four hundred words.

Pretty much only one reality is presented here. That’s part of the reason I so passionately argued for people to come campaign here because there was not another message.

Back to when I came here: How could you be a disabled veteran, you’re a liberal!

This is how propaganda works. Trump threatening to ban the press from the White House is actually bad, because the only people who will get access to him is his propagandists.

Then the stenographers that make up the press will be quoting “reporters” from Breitbart or Stormfront on ABC or the Washington Post, because access is so much more important than journalism.

Women in the New York Times on why they voted for Donald Trump. Much stupid.

So you might wonder why people here would vote for him when we only have conservative-aligned media and no other? These are women from around the country (some from large cities) that had multiple choices in where they get their news.

Anymouse  Jan 15, 2017 • 1:59:27am

I laughed Trump off like everyone else did. Once I stopped laughing at him and started listening, I started to support him. I felt like once you got past the bluster, he really was interested in helping everyone.

I do think having a secure border is very important. My father was a Muslim immigrant from Turkey, he went through the process. I don’t agree with a ban on Muslims, but my father was very wary of Muslims who came over if they didn’t have a reason to be here. He would support a full vetting, but not a total ban.

I have always considered myself a feminist. For me, I want to be treated the exact same way. That’s not the feel I get from feminists today, they want extra privileges. I gave up my first marriage so I could be a law partner and then I had to give up on my partnership so I could be a better mom.

To say women are going backwards would be wrong. Look at how much Trump hires women, how much he does rely on women, how much he relies on his own daughter. I’m sort of amazed by her. She may pull him more into the middle. She’ll be a good voice for women.

I made up my mind for Trump at the last minute. Since my husband is in the military, I was concerned about having someone who didn’t have military experience, didn’t have the knowledge of dealing with world leaders. And I kind of thought he had a big mouth.

But I had an 8-year-old who was totally on the Trump train. He talked me into taking him to a Trump rally. I expected him to be like what I’d seen on the news, saying hateful things. But his presence was very calming and I liked his talking points. We really are the middle class, and we kind of get swept aside.

Pretty much only one reality is presented here. That’s part of the reason I so passionately argued for people to come campaign here because there was not another message.

There are a fair number of countries (like *cough* Russia *cough*) where there is no opposition news at all, because reporting news the government doesn’t like gets you arrested or killed. There is still a significant minority if not majority of the audience who still don’t believe it, because it’s usually inconsistent with people’s experiences, inconsistent with itself, and curiously consistently supportive of the views of the people controlling the show.

The old Soviet jokes went on about it: a guy reads in Pravda that there is new scientific proof that too many potatoes are bad for your health, and immediately yells to his family that “they’ve sold the whole potato crop to Poland again!”

I know some of these people personally, and the people who do believe the party line do it for a reason (they’re authoritarian followers who need a powerful daddy, they like the talk about domination making others scared of the country, they like being angry all the time). The others that don’t like the party line can pick out the holes and contradictions fairly easily.

It’s not as easy as getting an opposing viewpoint to talk to them, because if the people want to keep believing the official story line they’ll just dismiss the opponents as lying for their own benefit, paid off by enemies, or just pitifully misled. Maybe you can peel off a few that way, but it really has to hit personally before anything changes.

Then the stenographers that make up the press will be quoting “reporters” from Breitbart or Stormfront on ABC or the Washington Post, because access is so much more important than journalism.

They’re doing that now, for the most part, writing crap in exchange for keeping access. The reporters who actually broke real news, like Kurt Eichenwald, didn’t do it by getting access: they did it by reading boring documents. If Trump kicks the courtiers out of the palace, a few of them might do the same thing out of necessity.

Well, we can hope so.

My sister-in-law, who emigrated to the United States from the Soviet Union, is appalled by what’s going on now. She can’t go back to Russia (though she still owns property there), and is terrified of our Republicans.

My brother-in-law has been to my home several times. He has remarked how much our media here where I live is like that in Russia. Only one point of view presented. While the local paper does print wire reports from around the world, they are selective about what wire reports they print.

For example, while the paper is reporting on Mr. Trump’s various picks for his cabinet, they are not reporting on such things as opposition to them and why there is opposition. As far as the newspaper here is concerned, everything is hunky dory.

I have to get to bed … I need to go to town tomorrow. G’night y’all.

Yeah, the whole thing is sort of amazing it its delusion. I read that article too with my jaw dropping open. Sure, she’s a Muslim, but one of the good ones, so Trump won’t hurt her. Sure, she’s a feminist, but one of the good ones, so Trump won’t hurt her.

Same way with ACA and Medicare and Medicaid: Trump’s supporters deserve it, don’t you know, so Trump would never take it away because they need it. Those Other People, however, are a bunch of moochers and don’t. Now some of the more perceptive ones are getting the sinking feeling that they’re going to be treated like the Other People too.

As you said, and I totally agree, GAAAA.

So, as I mentioned yesterday, I tried an online supermarket here; they delivered the goods about an hour and a half ago.

No problems; everything that I’d ordered arrived, nothing damaged or broken, and the delivery was 10 minutes early to boot - the delivery driver was very professional and helpful. I left them a very positive review and I’ll definitely be using them again.

I was just chatting with a friend about it and she was all like, “Wait…..you mean I’d never need to set foot inside a shop again with this service? Gimme the website address!!”

Customer service in supermarkets here tends towards the atrocious at best and goes downhill rather rapidly from there.

I didn’t particularly like everything he was saying as far as building a wall, and doing this to immigrants. I looked at that more as bravado, his audience needed that to get the applause.

Morning!

So yeah, I am watching Meat The Chuck, how could I not since Rep. Lewis is a main feature.

This is a unique show. A lot of frustration on the panel, Jeffry Goldberg calling it abnormal, and Rich Lowery saying get used to it.

Reince Priebus is trying hard to explain it all away and stammering way more than usual.

But one thing still strikes me…I have not seen or heard anything from Kellyanne Conway since the John Lewis statement came out. Has anyone seen anything from her since early Friday? Just wondering…because she is the usual smoother or everything Trump. Has she been on FOX, her safe space? No tweets posted here of her usual patch-up jobs, etc., just seems odd…and maybe telling.

This level of interest seems like the old “Kremlin watchers” of the Cold War era. Of course with Trump that might be the same thing.

So, this happened in my little town: Police Find Weapons Stash at Patchogue Home After Traffic Stop: Cops

It all started when troopers pulled over a 2006 Subaru on the eastbound Southern State Parkway in the Town of Islip for a traffic violation at about 5:30 p.m., police said.

The driver, 41-year-old Andrew Kuklis, was found to be in possession of marijuana, a loaded .45 caliber handgun, numerous high capacity magazines and a dagger, police said. Further investigation by the Troop L Gun Investigation Unit led to a search of Kuklis’s residence, where police said they found: a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver, a Sig Sauer .45 caliber handgun, a PWS model MK1 AR-15, numerous high capacity magazines and a large quantity of various ammunition.

And Patchogue is kinda the hippie enclave out here. I can’t even imagine what they’re hoarding out in Methland.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The drip drip drip you hear isn’t just the melting snow and ice around these parts. It’s the steady stream of conflicts of interest, coincidences that border on collusion, and outright corruption.

Trump’s busy getting ready to gut the safety net, and the GOP is busy gutting the checks and balances that would keep someone as dangerously unhinged, unprepared, and unqualified from harming the nation. Far too many GOPers have put party over nation and their naked political ambitions over the nation’s best interests.

And Trump’s busy diverting attention from all the conflicts they’ve got with Russia. All while funding folks back here in the US to engage in disinformation, agitprop, and chicanery.

Need more proof?

That O’Keefe got caught in a sting on trying to sting progressive groups that were looking to demonstrate against the President isn’t bad enough. O’Keefe’s group received funding from the Trump Foundation. Coincidence? Hardly.

And O’Keefe’s plan was to foment violence at those protests, so as to de-legitimize them, and to sow discord for the so-called law and order types who flock to Trump and his message, despite the fact that the US is currently in a period of low crime (in fact, lowest in decades historically, even if there’s some instances where crime rates increased from last year to this year in some areas).

Being back in school sent to the old loans into deferment and I made sure to pay off the accumulated interest before it capitalized when the loans went out of deferment.

Flummoxed by Trump’s command of word salad, Sarah Palin says, “Hold my beer and watch this”

Sent to speak for saddened democrats who are now frothing at the mouth in greater desperation to silence the voice of the people and delegitimize the election, Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) was played as a pawn today. This is unjust and despicable on the part of democrat leaders who just tested political winds.

Liberal operatives are daring Americans to hold Lewis accountable for accusations made on NBC, knowing it’s convenient for them that Trump supporters must follow their new-normal rule and “better not go there.”

I’m thrilled with this setup. I still love my Mac for internet / work / photoshop / etc but I’m making up for years of crap game availability.

I’m glad I have enough money to keep my Windows PC up-to-date on hardware so I can use it for gaming.

I bought my a brother a PS4 Pro, Madden, and another controller (when the controller gets back in stock at Amazon) for a belated combo Christmas/birthday gift since he hasn’t had the money to upgrade from the PS3 he has.

While running some errands yesterday afternoon, I heard a report on one of the NYC news radio stations about Jennifer Holiday’s reversal on performing at the inauguration.

It was the same report as I’d seen all day yesterday, with one exception - this report mentioned that she faced ‘enormous pressure from the gay & lesbian community’ to cancel.

I hadn’t seen that anywhere before hearing that report. I’m sensing a gentle push of the narrative among our friends (cough) in the ‘liberal media’ (cough).

Yep:

Swaine said that campaign staff asked to videotape Trump walking around the museum and requested that the museum shut down for five hours to accommodate his visit.

“We made it known to Mr. Trump’s campaign that we were not going to grant a request of suspending our operations so he could somehow try to legitimize his ideological positions,” Swaine told The News & Observer. “The landmark is very important - it’s not just a political backdrop.”

Oh, and those “economically scared” supporters…

…since news of the museum’s decision broke last week, museum staff members have received threats via phone calls and social media. “The callers were threatening to come over and burn down the building and to shoot up the building,” he said

Not this shit again:

“Stopped train triggers major political row in Balkans”

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — A Serbian train halted at the border with Kosovo and bearing signs reading “Kosovo is Serbian,” has fueled a major crisis in the Balkans and escalated a potential Russia-West row over dominance in the heart of the Balkans.

Serbia accused Kosovo’s leaders on Sunday of “wanting war” and warned that it would defend “every inch” of its territory, a day after the train, decorated in Serbian Christian Orthodox symbols and flags, was prevented from entering the neighboring nation.

Kosovo, supported by much of the West, declared independence from Serbia in 2008. But, Serbia and its Slavic Orthodox ally, Russia, do not recognize the split.

Serbia has sought to maintain influence in Kosovo’s north, where most of the country’s Serb minority lives. NATO-led troops have controlled Kosovo’s borders since a three-month air war in 1999 to stop a bloody Serbian crackdown against ethnic Albanian separatists.

Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic issued the warning Sunday after the passenger train, painted in the colors of the red, blue and white Serbian flag, was prevented from crossing into Kosovo, where his government contends ethnic Serbs are under threat from Kosovo Albanians.

“Yesterday, we were on the verge of clashes,” Nikolic said in the strongest rhetoric since the NATO-led troops took control of Kosovo’s borders in 1999.

Kosovo Prime Minister Isa Mustafa said he had contacted the United States and the European Union to express his country’s concerns.

“The time of provocation, conflicts and wars should belong to the past,” Mustafa said, adding that such moves “are unacceptable, unnecessary actions that do not contribute to the normalization of the relations between our two countries.”

Serbia officially is seeking European Union membership, but has lately been sliding toward the Kremlin and its policies to increase its influence in the Balkans. Serbia has strained relations with most of its neighbors — something many analysts believe is a Russian influence…..
