Interesting, my old law professor, John Eastman, is going to be on O’Rielly tonight talking about “California trying to become a sanctuary state”. As much as I liked Eastman, personally, he has always been something of an ideological throw back, so I’m guessing he’s not going to be down with this.

It’s always interesting to see one’s instructors on TV. Haven’t had that much but my one history professor did speak with Doris Kearns Goodwin on Lincoln’s bicentennial. Richard Norton Smith btw if you guys are curious. He at least was a Republican but he worked for Ed Brooke who was really liberal and Prof Smith was fair. He especially liked my depiction of Nixon as one of the last NEw Dealers.

I think Trump is that insane to want to invade and occupy Mexico. He’s a 70 year old with the mentality of an undisciplined first grader.

To follow up on this, the baker is running a business, and the operation and existence of that business rely on infrastructure and a legal system that are both provided by the state. In return, the state is entitled to expect the business to serve members of the public without indulging in invidious discrimination.
Allowing religious exceptions to anti-discrimination civil rights laws effectively makes these laws pointless.

The Latest: California parole panel recommends release of Charles Manson follower. https://t.co/A0MMeeNyjM
— The Associated Press (@AP) February 2, 2017
A state panel has recommended paroling a former follower of cult leader Charles Manson after California governors blocked four previous recommendations for his release.
The 31st parole hearing for 74-year-old Bruce Davis was held Wednesday at the California Men’s Colony at San Luis Obispo.
Gov. Jerry Brown will have the final say on whether Davis is released.
Davis is serving a life sentence for the 1969 slayings of musician Gary Hinman and stuntman Donald “Shorty” Shea.
He was not involved in the more notorious killings of actress Sharon Tate and six others by the Manson “family.”
Parole panels have decided before that Davis is no longer a public safety risk only to see governors — who have the final say on release — block his parole.

Exactly. I mean if you want to belong to a church that believes gay people and non-believers are hell bound. Fine, I can’t stop you there but if you’re operating a business that relies on our secular infrastructure and legal system, you don’t get to be exempted from anti-discrimination laws.

My take on it is this - he MIGHT, JUST MIGHT have done a good thing, IF, AND ONLY IF there were no pictures taken, and he never, ever mentions it in his usual self-aggrandizing way.
That’s one small good thing against a mountain of shit.
But that goes away the instant he whines about people saying he doesn’t care, and here he went out of his way to fly to Dover to meet the casket.
I also more than half suspect somebody said, “Here, do this. I know it’s a pain, but if we leak it just right, it’ll humanize you.”

Jesus. Aren’t we at the point now where it’s time to start seriously discussing how to remove Donald Trump from office before he does any more irreversible damage?
I’d have thought so. If nothing else, Congress should be asserting some kind of independence. Instead, the Administration surreptitiously recruits Congressional staffers to help write EOs, specifically prohibiting them telling their bosses, and Goodlatte says, “That’s fine.”

Oh, and Trump’s screwing around with both Mexico and Australia? Forget starting a war with Iran. He’s going to ruin relations with allies that goes back decades. And that’ll screw up economic relations, cause the global economy to spasm, and American jobs?
Where’s that shruggie… because Trump just don’t care.

Yes. But sadly, his own Party isn’t going to put him out of office. He’s going to be there to do maximum damage for at least the next two years.

As we survey the wreckage of Trump’s first few days in office, it’s important to remember that most of these outrages are GOP party line, especially the substantive acts.
Pointlessly pissing off Australia is about the only substantive thing a generic Republican certainly wouldn’t have done.
A generic Republican also wouldn’t be such a thin-skinned idiot on Twitter, but that’s just a circus sideshow.

I am chuckling thinking about an entry in my grandmother’s journal she wrote in her retirement years recalling how my grandfather was let go from the NLRB but she talked about how “even a Republican could recongize a good man.” Not sure what she was referring to in specific there and it’s kind of funny since her father in law, my grandfather’s father was a Republican from what I’ve found in published professional biographeis of him. Guess my Dad’s Dad was a rebel. Not surprised given my own Dad.

Hey KGxvi though, do you know anything about a Northwestern professor named John McGinnis? I used one of his articles getting the conservative perspective on CFR for the article I did for my boss today? Seemed a bit defensive since he was claiming the left only championed CFR because of frustration at losing elections.

I mean I understood some of his points in the article- that there are more ways than just mere money that someone can influence elections but I keep on going back to how a small donor class dominates our elections hence why I made the argument for CFR. I also disagree with money = speech.

Jesus, but Trump is looking fat.
Trump’s Australian call.
It should have been one of the most congenial calls for the new commander in chief — a conversation with the leader of Australia, one of America’s staunchest allies, at the end of a triumphant week.
Instead, President Trump blasted Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull over a refugee agreement and boasted about the magnitude of his electoral college win, according to senior US officials briefed on the Saturday exchange. Then, 25 minutes into what was expected to be an hour-long call, Trump abruptly ended it.
It’s past time to get the net and straight jacket on him.

I do think you’re right about that. Even before I became a paralegal, I’ve always counted a number of friends I have a lot of ideological disagreements with. The funny thing is when we discuss politics as a family- my family is very liberal though my one brother has an independent streak and has told me that I’m too harsh on Republicans and their beliefs. Might well be but I’ve never ever used ideology as a reason not to be someone’s friend. I’m not petty. if I don’t agree with you on politics, I can find other stuff to focus on.

Got a great Irish Gaelic word for you:
“Craic” (/kræk/ KRACK), or “crack”, is a term for news, gossip, fun, entertainment, and enjoyable conversation, particularly prominent in Ireland. It is often used with the definite article - the craic. Here we rate the six kinds of craic (actually an English word which for some reason is in every Irish person’s soul).

From the linked articled in #177
“In the last couple years, I’ve watched leaders in the Republican Party become less and less tolerant of diverse opinions and dissenting voices,” Fukumoto said in a news release. “Today, I’m facing demands for my resignation from leadership and possible censure because I raised concerns about our President’s treatment of women and minorities. I’ve been asked by both my party and my caucus to commit to not criticizing the president for the remainder of his term and to take a more partisan approach to working in the Legislature. That is not a commitment I can make. As a representative of my community, it is my job to hold leaders accountable and to work with anyone, regardless of party, to make Hawaii a better place for our families.”
“This morning, I sent a letter to my district explaining that I would like to leave the Republican Party and seek membership in the Democratic Party,” Fukumoto said. “When I was re-elected in November, I was elected as a Republican, and I want to honor my community’s choice by consulting them before any decision is made. As I articulated in my letter, I encourage my constituents to contact me with input and provide feedback. I was elected by the people of Mililani, and I am here to represent them.”

Jeff Lord is a new name for me. From Wikipedia he seems to be a busy little shitbird:
In May 2012, Lord wrote an article in The American Spectator that compared President Barack Obama with Mao Zedong because of the similarities between Barack Obama’s slogan “Forward” and Chairman Mao’s Great Leap Forward. In the same article, he also compared Obama with the Hitler Youth due to their song “Vorwärts! Vorwärts!” (“Forward, Forward!”).
In February 2015, Lord called upon the Republican Party to demand an apology from the Democratic Party for their role in promoting and defending slavery and creating the segregationist Jim Crow system.
In June 2015, Lord wrote an open letter to Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the head of the U.S. Democratic Party, asking her to apologize for her party’s role in Indian removal, promoting and defending slavery, Confederate secession, and creating segregationist Jim Crow regimes, saying that the Democrats’ historical support for such institutions contributed and contributes to the continuing existence of racism and bigotry in American society.
This is what they are. This is what they do. And most in the media give them a pass on their garbage.

Collins didn’t surprise me but Murkowski honestly did but I did hear a good point. Alaska has virtually no private schools due to how spread out its population is and Murkowski actually does have a bit of an independent streak in her.

I remember the Republicans filibustering Carter’s nomination of Theodore Sorenson to be CIA director. The Senate head count showed Sorenson would be rejected so he gave up.

This is where popular demonstrations might really deter the armchair warriors from starting anything. When the assembly and march is announced, SHOW UP.
(The reason Nixon didn’t use tactical nukes in Vietnam/SE Asia is because he was afraid of the popular reaction. DT isn’t that bright, but some people — Mattis for example — probably are.)

Cabinet post though. Anyhow, my young Dems sponsor in HS was a big Sorenson fan since he was a rare Nebraska bred Democrat too.

There’s a video of Trump getting on Marine One (on TMZ, sorry) and I swear the rotors are not going.
Bet you $100 after he saw that photo that he made them do a dead start after he boards.

Mine have been disappointing so far though they both did vote today against Tillerson and I do greatly appreciate as a person with a disability that Kaine pressed Devos on her views of students with disabilities and Warner is sponsoring a bill that would get Bannon off the security council.

The new Supremes majority may soon discover that the Founders didn’t want the POTUS to ever be sued.
I’ve fallen behind here because I was busy writing to my Democratic senators. (Text behind private tag if anyone is interested) I stopped at 3 post offices today trying to get a bunch of pre-stamped postcards and none of them carry them any more. So I went old school. Stationery. Envelopes. Fountain pen. Proper forms of address. And I kept it as brief as I could since I doubt it will be seen by anyone except overworked and underpaid staffers.

An even better analogy. Although the way I see it, when I do my runs, I actually alternate it running and walking. Run for three minutes, walk for one. Repeat until done. So taking a short break is absolutely fair by my standards. :)

Can we please lay the blame on the fucking Republican majority and the fucking voters who put them in place first? The Republicans are breaking the fucking rules every time they don’t get their way with both the legislative and judicial branch. How are they supposed to stop this?
re: #466 Stanley Sea
Every single day is a shock event. Or they are just so fucked up?
I have always viewed the first 6 months a new administration as a sort of legislative Blitzkrieg. It is very difficult to stop. Particularly when the ruling party owns both legislative houses. Eventually, party goals are achieved and/or friction takes its course.
However, what is so discomfiting about the current regime is how actively transgressive, destructive, and reactionary it has been. My sense is that these are deliberate tactics. Crude though they are.
To my mind there is much we do not know about the current regime’s final goals. And therefore why it is doing what it is doing.
I suspect that the weakening and destruction of our current organizations and beliefs are one goal. With the replacement by Regime organizations and goals. The purge at the State Dept is one example.
Meanwhile the GOP leadership apparently thinks that they can contain the Regime.
I would guess that a few stumbles are probably viewed as nothing more than acceptable casualties. As are, most likely, the thousands of deaths that these policy changes are likely to cause.
As always, ymmv. I have been wrong before. And will likely be wrong many times in the future. I certainly hope that I am wrong here.
Trump loves Gold Star families so much he’s not wasting any time making more of them.

Bannon is suicidal. He just wants to destroy everything.
The GOP rank-and-file can’t control this regime; the regime can’t control themselves. They are both malicious and stupid. But as has been shown time and time again, these types of regimes fail in nightmarish scenes. 1793 France. 1917 Russia. 1990 Romania.
The last thing I want to do is add “2017 United States” to that list.
