Exactly. We’ve seen how utterly hopeless many swing voters are when it comes to understanding WTF is going on (e.g. the “I hate Obamacare but love the ACA” crowd 9_9) This is what I was trying to get at yesterday in my criticism of Dem messaging - all throughout Obama’s terms, they didn’t dumb things down enough and cast them in bumper-sticker-sized, clear-cut moral terms. Like it or not, that’s what needs to be done to reach the only reachable voters left.
George Lakoff gets this, and always has. Hope Tom Perez and future Dem campaign managers keep this in mind.

Rather, they should report the truth of the matter, and then note that Trump was disputing it.

Absolutely. The same point was made in the Debunking Handbook from Skeptical Science, where they discuss the Familiarity Backfire Effect:
To debunk a myth, you often have to mention it - otherwise, how will people know what you’re talking about? However, this makes people more familiar with the myth and hence more likely to accept it as true. Does this mean debunking a myth might actually reinforce it in people’s minds?
…
How does one avoid causing the Familiarity Backfire Effect? Ideally, avoid mentioning the myth altogether while correcting it. When seeking to counter misinformation, the best approach is to focus on the facts you wish to communicate.

Things are going super thanks for asking …
Last week, after Spicer became aware that information had leaked out of a planning meeting with about a dozen of his communications staffers, he reconvened the group in his office to express his frustration over the number of private conversations and meetings that were showing up in unflattering news stories, according to sources in the room.
Upon entering Spicer’s office for what one person briefed on the gathering described as “an emergency meeting,” staffers were told to dump their phones on a table for a “phone check,” to prove they had nothing to hide.
…
The phone checks included whatever electronics staffers were carrying when they were summoned to the unexpected follow-up meeting, including government-issued and personal cellphones.
Spicer also warned the group of more problems if news of the phone checks and the meeting about leaks was leaked to the media. It’s not the first time that warnings about leaks have promptly leaked. The State Department’s legal office issued a four-page memo warning of the dangers of leaks, and that memo was immediately posted by The Washington Post.

Regular staffers having it on their personal phones for personal communications is not, and the article states Spicer said using it at all was the violation. Any staffer high level enough to be violating the PRA should have a govt phone, which generally are set up so the user doesn’t have the ability to add apps.

a) You have a legislative change in ‘05 which caused a rise in the stats.
b) You have rape in marriage banned since ‘65.
c) There is a much higher propensity to go to the cops after a sex crime in Sweden.
d) Each sexual act in a sexual assault counts as a rape charge here. That is, you threaten someone with violence to extract a BJ, HJ and plain old intercourse, that’s three counts of rape for ya. Other jurisdictions lump together charges.
e) You don’t even have to be the “beneficiary” of the sex. Like, if you at gunpoint force two people to have sex, insta-charge two counts of rape.
Any questions?

— Frankly My Dear … (@goddamnedfrank) February 27, 2017
I don’t know much about the properties of VX but I imagine that something was done to raise the boiling point / lower the vapor pressure and keep it from aerosolizing. Regardless though the attack itself was just beyond the pale, and the UN should be investigating the shit out of his, then recommending sanctions. So far I’ve seen little evidence that this is getting the attention it deserves.
Probably another thing we can thank George W Bush for, lying about Iraq’s WMD program really undercut future enforcement efforts. Obama’s anemic response to Assad’s use of nerve gas in Syria didn’t help much either, he got them to surrender their stockpiles but they just moved on to dual use industrial chemicals like chlorine.

Another secret though- Sanders benefied from conservative Democrats hating Clinton and being willing to vote for anyone including him against her. I believe Frank pointed out a large chunk of those who voted for him in the WV primary notably said they would vote for Trump in the GE regardless. I’d have so much more respect for the Sanders campaign if they could just pat themselves on the back where they did well and build from there but they seem to relish in resentful bullshit against the Clinton campaign for having the nerve to win and be preferred by the establishment of a party that she’s helped for decades over a guy who literally isn’t even a Democrat.

re: #90 goddamnedfrank
The investigation is still ongoing. I’d imagine there’s a big web of North Korean intelligence to unravel. I don’t think NK has reached out to murder somebody abroad like this in a while. Ordinarily I would say our intelligence is probably helping out, too, but under Commander in Cheeto, who knows.
My understanding is that the killers probably used a binary form of VX. Wikigoogle describes a two-part system with ordinary sulfur as one component, and some kind of crazy but not-totally-toxic methyl-ethyl-death liquid as the other. I can imagine pouring the oily part onto a handkerchief, maybe sprinkling that with sulfur powder a couple of feet from the target, and then mushing it over his nose. Then a quick getaway. So, it probably didn’t involve carrying a container of live VX through a crowd.
re: #90 goddamnedfrank
I’m simply stunned that North Korea’s use of VX nerve agent in a crowded civilian airport isn’t getting more attention.
— Frankly My Dear … (@goddamnedfrank) February 27, 2017
You’re right, it’s most likely because the fact that this hit was carried out by a team of two women assassins - like something out of some Hollywood secret-agent thriller - has obscured the fact that these “ladies” were f*cking around with a deadly nerve-gas compound in a crowded public place.
Also: it’s North Korea: sadly, stuff like this is only expected….
@JoeNBC @BernieSanders What other conspiracy theories do you believe in? 9/11 Troof? Holocaust denial?

I’m thinking these nominees are pretty happy their investments are keeping them from joining Trump’s “shit sandwich”. Trump may have to go to another active duty military person who cannot say No without having to retire or lose rank.
I’m curious what happens to active duty McMasters when Trump tires of his honesty and going against what trump says.

Agreed.
I made marmalade from the Seville oranges I got last week.
Bottom line: nice flavor but not worth it. Which is probably why Seville oranges are hard to find. They have So. Many. Seeds. Like a couple dozen in each orange. So they’re a pain to fish out. The membranes on the segments are pretty tough, so I tried to get the pulp without too much membrane, which is just a bit labor intensive. I think I’ll go back to Valencias or Blood oranges and leave a bit of pith on the peel for that nice bitter kick. Also, the pith contains a lot of pectin to thicken it so you can go light on the sugar.

A moment in how awesome rich people are:
HIGHLAND PARK, Texas — A New York Times bestselling author is calling out the Highland Park High School students for mocking him during a speaking event at the high school.
Jamie Ford, author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, posted his experience on his website. Ford spoke at the high school Thursday as part of its HP LitFest that invites writers and authors to speak to students. It seemed to be going well until the crowd began clapping while he was speaking.
Then as I opened my mouth to speak again—you began clapping. As I tried to answer questions you began clapping. For twenty minutes, as I tried to wrap up my presentation, you clapped and cheered randomly, a thousand students, trolling me.
Ford thought it was a “brief moment of impoliteness,” but said the clapping continued when he talked about how 120,000 Japanese Americans were relocated and incarcerated during World War II.
Then you clapped and cheered the Japanese Internment. You couldn’t resist.
For those of you who don’t know Dallas, Highland Park is a wealthy (white) part of Dallas. That area is where SMU is located.

That’s the recommended approach, but it’s still yet another password, not true two-factor auth. The factors of authentication are:
1) Something you know,
2) Something you have,
3) Something you are.
Biometrics wind up actually falling in the category of 2) above, since most accessible biometrics are also things that can be taken from you (by force, if necessary). Nevertheless, wish-it-were-two-factor authentication obviously fails the above test, essentially providing multiple forms of factor 1.

Not repeat the same number or letter more than 3 times in a row
Not contain spaces, and may only use these characters

I was talking to a guy who does network security. Where I work, we have to change our passwords periodically, in some cases every 60 days. And we’re not allowed to write them down. His suggestion was to memorize a random sequence, use that in the middle, and change the front and back for the different computers, making those something associated with the machine. As for changing periodically, unless your password checker does more than just a direct comparison between previous passwords, do a oneup or something on the front or back part of the password.

Yeah, Ralph Northam, pandering to the BernieBros? No filling me with confidence.
Timothy—
My name is Marcia “Cia” Price and I represent the 95th District in the Virginia House of Delegates. For the last decade, I have been fighting for social justice, equality and fairness in our great Commonwealth.
This year, I am going to be fighting for Ralph Northam as the Chair of his campaign for Governor.
During last year’s Democratic primary, I was the only member of the Virginia General Assembly to endorse Sen. Bernie Sanders for President. I am proud to support Ralph because he will fight for the same people as Bernie—our youth, marginalized communities, and the middle class.
Why? He has done it before. From working to get quality, accessible and affordable healthcare for all women to expanding pre-K programs for families throughout the Commonwealth, Ralph has been a leader on the issues that matter most to our communities. He is working to make our communities safer, education more affordable, and good jobs more attainable. Further, Ralph Northam is the only candidate in this race who has from the beginning stood up to the NRA. He has remained steadfast and unwavering under pressure, while actively fighting for us. That is how I know he always will have our back.
Ralph has spent his entire career fighting for progressive causes—and he will continue doing that as Governor. I am proud to help lead a campaign that wants to build a Commonwealth that works for everyone—no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter who they love. If you agree with me, forward this email to a friend and tell them why you are supporting Ralph Northam for Governor.
I look forward to seeing you on the campaign trail!

Timothy—
My name is Cyliene Montgomery—and I’m a Berner. I was a delegate to last summer’s Democratic National Convention representing the commonwealth of Virginia, and I proudly cast my vote for Sen. Bernie Sanders to be our presidential nominee. His progressive vision for our country—from raising the minimum wage to expanding social security and access to healthcare—resonates deep in my bones. It’s like he speaks directly to me.
I believe that’s the type of leadership we need in Virginia—sincere, principled, compassionate—and that’s why I’m supporting Ralph Northam for governor.
Just like Sen. Sanders, Ralph cares about Virginia families and the people of our commonwealth. He’s got progressive ideas he’s spent years fighting for—and he’s a phenomenal listener. I’m a disAbility activist, and Ralph is one of our fiercest allies. When we meet with him, he doesn’t just hear our concerns—he takes them to heart. That means the world to us.
If you agree that that’s the type of leadership we need in Richmond, forward this email to a friend and tell them why you’re supporting Ralph Northam for governor.
Thanks for your help,

I think badgering Bob or Taryn or anybody else about what happened to Chez on Twitter or Facebook or comment sections is extremely rude right now.

I heard a wonderful interview with him that Terry Gross did on Fresh Air. I loved him, and recommend it highly.
I haven’t seen all of the best actress nominations but I liked Ruth Negga in Loving.

Viola Davis—nothing but class.
Been a fan of hers ever since I saw her in Doubt with the late and great Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
Watch celebs spew ignorant political venom at Oscars?? Nah…think I’d rather have a colonoscopy. Both happen from same location.

Funny, Mike, that’s how I feel when your pal Chuck Norris offers his opinions but I guess that’s different because he agrees with you. This is their country just as much as it is yours, I know that chaps your fascist pedophile apologizing ass but it’s a fact.
@GovMikeHuckabee Yeah—the same location where your pardons of Maurice Clemmons and Wayne Dumond came from!

Been meaning to watch Luke Cage for awhile. I do know Ali from House of Cards.

He also had a small role in Free State of Jones I believe too. I was a little disappointed in that. Great premise though.

I actually saw the film Bannon produced since it was an adaption of a Shakespeare play I had read. Definitely very read and surreal. It did have Anthony Hopkins though.
Really for all Republicans supposed hatred of Hollywood. They love Reagan. They think Wayne’s the ultimate man. Might be projecting a bit eh?
Wow. The Iranian director won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. Needless to say, hi,s read statement was somewhat critical…..

re: #180 Varek Raith
We’re sorry, your password is too long.
-_-
I get that quite a bit where I have to enter my E-mail address.
I got a tech at TracFone to explain that to me … it seems that legacy software used by a bunch of companies only accept passwords or E-mail addresses that are so long. No one ever thought apparently someone would have an E-mail address over thirty-two characters in length.
On the other hand, that means a lot of spammy companies can’t get to me either.
Completely off of whatever topic - my Niece’s husband just posted something on FB which I found kind of ironic. It was one of those “Marriage is till death do us part, not till you get tired of trying”
What’s ironic about that is that he was only able to marry my Niece because she’d gotten divorced.
He’s a great guy, and her first husband was abusive. They’re both far better off now. But….
It just goes to show you the limits of Facebook Meme Philosophy.

That would be too logical. Have you met programmers?
;)
Yes, my wife. She worked with REAL computers (PDP-7’s and later when she worked for Digital).
Kids these days, wanting to TYPE passwords into computers rather than flipping switches, pushing buttons, or running punched tape through them.
And booting computers? Y’all have it easy, just pushing an ON button rather than putting the entire bootstrap sequence through the front panel.

Speaking of your wife, did the pie hardware incompatibility of this morning cause your oven to blow up or anything? We have what sounds like the same pie pan and I have successfully produced cherry, apple, peach, blueberry and lemon meringue pies in it, but one can’t be too careful.

I remember my first encounter with computers during the summer of 1972 going to Vo-Tech summer school while Dad taught welding. It was an IBM Model 360 with those six layer Memory discs, oodles of punch cards and introduction to COBOL.
Started college in 1973 and Pitt’s computer room had several UNIVACS donated by Gulf Oil that operated on FORTRAN with WATfor and WATfiv. We wrote a program to play Monopoly that needed 8,300 punch cards we debugged. Found some interesting anomalies in the game simulations that space with the highest probability of being landed on was Illinois Avenue. Also the Green property block was more valuable than the Boardwalk/Park Place combo. I remember when Dr. Hans Berliner, winner of the World Correspondence Chess Championship started work on his computer chess program HiTech. He gave lectures in 1977 predicting that by 2000 computers would defeat whomever was World Champion. Still remember all the snickers when he said that, but he was proved right!
re: #226 Backwoods_Sleuth
the answers to all of my security questions anywhere have no relation to my personal life/history or even the topic of the security question.
I don’t have services that could damage me (for example bank accounts). My passwords are writing cheques or money orders to pay bills and such, or telephoning for enquiries.
Every Website I do have a password with (this one for instance) is different from every other Website, and my passwords are stored in a notebook not located near my computer (I’m paranoid from many years working in electronic warfare in the Navy).
Still trying to figure out how to hook up a punched tape reader to my HP laptop though.
