Dragging a conversation over from the previous thread:

He could at least afford to douse it with HP sauce!

[Embedded content]

Dad loved just a dab of this on his steaks!

I acquired a taste for HP Sauce when I was in the Navy. The first time I went to the Med, the ship bought a big shipment locally (they do that).

I can’t buy it here though; I have to mail-order for it.

re: #304 HappyWarrior

That sounds fake to me.

(in reference to the Supreme Court considering a case to nullify the Presidential election)

I wrote about that yesterday here in the comments.

Three Massachusetts women have filed a case to nullify the election based on the Guarantee Clause of the Constitution (that is, the several states are guaranteed by the Federal government to be protected from foreign invasion). The Court has never heard a case on the Guarantee Clause, and is sometimes interested in novel cases.

They also filed for a Special Master to investigate and present evidence.

The women’s case partially rests on evidence both Austria and Ukraine threw out elections when foreign meddling was shown. The US Supreme Court is obviously not bound to consider evidence from foreign courts, but may do so. The claim is Russia meddled in our election, based on the assessment of intelligence agencies, therefore the government failed in its obligations under the Guarantee Clause and a new election is mandated (in the plaintiffs’ opinions).

That said, even if the court does hear it (they haven’t said whether they would), the case would be a longshot.

Since I wrote that, Snopes has weighed in on the Democratic Underground and other Websites’ claims, noting their claims are a mixture of true and false.
snopes.com

What I wrote up there is true. What is false is just because the case has been distributed to the justices to weigh the merits of hearing the case does not mean the court will hear the case. The overwhelming majority of cases presented to the court die in conference.

The scheduled date for the conference about this case is March 17.

Seniors shocked at being mugshotted (is that a word?) and fingerprinted at the US border:
calgaryherald.com

Calgary seniors Carl and Sandra Hannigan were looking forward to a stress-free flight home after a 10-day visit to Mexico.

But the two said they were stunned when U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials pulled them aside at the Salt Lake City International Airport to fingerprint and photograph them.

The couple were on their way to catch a connecting flight to Calgary on Feb. 13 when what they call the privacy intrusion occurred, a process that took about 10 minutes.

After showing their boarding passes and Canadian passports, “we were told to put our hands on a green scanner, then they took facial photos,” said Carl Hannigan, 75, a Calgary veterinarian.

“It was a little bit unsettling and unnerving … I felt our privacy was invaded.”

Hannigan said he wasn’t about to object to the agents collecting the data, despite his frustration.

“I’m not the kind to zip my lip but I didn’t dare ask him,” said the UK native, who’s been a Canadian citizen since 1973.

“I know how powerful these guys are and I didn’t want to miss our flight.”

(more at the Calgary Herald)

The husband wrote a letter to his minister of Parliament over his treatment by the USA.

The lower court ruled against them. That said, the same day the ruling came out of that court was the day the intelligence services said that our elections were interfered with.

I doubt the Supreme Court will overturn the election myself if they even hear it (less than 1% of cases presented to them are actually argued before the Court), though surprising rulings have come out before.

Even if it went to SCOTUS and they miraculously ruled in its favor, it would create chaos as there is no constitutional provision for a “do ever” election at all. We would have literally no executive branch and any action taken from that point would be viewed as illegitimate by someone or another and it would be in the federal courts forever until the whole shit show collapsed into civil war.

This is a BAD idea all around.

I suspect that is the case as well. That is, there is no Constitutional path for a do-over, and no Presidential election has ever been nullified.

I was a line cook at a restaurant in Steamboat years ago, cooked a lot of steaks, a lot of steaks. When a well-done was requested I’d sear both sides on the grill (with the nice cross grill marks) and then just throw it the microwave and forget about it until the table was coming up to serve. Worked well. No complaints.

Yikes.

I go with medium myself. I don’t need a charcoal briquette, though I guess your method wouldn’t make the whole steak charcoal.

If either of the microwaves were in use, in a pinch I’d throw the steak in the deep fryer. That chars the shit out of steak, buh’lieve me.

I cannot remember when I last had a “steak”, if by that we mean a slab of bovine muscle.

Deep in my mind I seem to harbour memories of eating such things, and not wanting them to be too dry, so I guess I was a “medium-rare” kind of guy.

Also remember I have a relative who used to only eat mean if it was well done - never liked to see pink in the food he was eating. I think he eventually gave up eating meat altogether.

More work at privatising the VA by starving it of money.
stripes.com

VA Secretary Shulkin proposed eliminating the forty-mile thirty-day rule. (That rule allows a veteran to seek health care from private providers if they live outside forty miles or an appointment cannot be obtained within thirty days.)

Private providers (hospitals and physicians) cost the government significantly more than the VA costs the government.

I can pretty much predict if the rule were rescinded, that funding for the VA would not increase.

I focused on various issues: establish single-payer, increase minimum wage; raise social security; increase top rates of tax & eliminate most deductions; make it easier to vote; increase the influence of the United Nations; raise protections for workers, and ensure equal pay for equal work no matter who does it.

Fox News ran a similar questionnaire and got flooded by com-simp pinko anarchists. But then even Homeland Security tells the White House what it doesn’t want to hear.

The White House needs to know what YOU think

white house survey

Why not fill it in honestly? The only “Accomplishment” I endorsed was one I never heard of but it sounds sort of OK, and Justin Trudeau signed off on it: “Creating the United States-Canada Council for Women Entrepreneurs and Business Leaders.” Part is bullet-list style, and moderately challenging, but there are places to write sentences of your own devising.

Why not? Because I am not interested in giving the Trump Administration my E-mail address.

I don’t see any difference in this survey and those put out by companies to gather E-mails for spam.

So at some point I will discover how many half marathons are too many to do in a year. Maybe this year. But as I am looking at races, I discover that Matt Inman of The Oatmeal has one that he helps organize/run and this was in the FAQ. I feel the need to share it with you all.

Why didn’t the melons get married?

BECAUSE THEY CANTALOUPE.

You’re welcome. (Race is in Seattle.)

I replace mayonnaise in most salads like that with Greek yogurt. Tastes even better, cuts the calories way back and zeroes the fat while adding protein.

I still add a dash of mayo, but just a tablespoon or so

This is amusing. Nutjob Watson contributed $2K to a journalist’s fact-finding trip to the wasteland that is Malmö, Sweden, probably expecting a big exposé of the raving hordes of dangerous immigrants terrorizing the locals. Instead, the journo found Malmö is kinda boring.

How can Xi Jinping project strength in first handshake with Trump?

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. The resistance continues, and Trump’s Amerikkka continues showing its true colors:

It is unbelievably jarring to see your family name on overturned gravestones. It wasn’t my actual family as I don’t have any relatives in those cemeteries, but it still hits home.

Trump and the other white supremacists are emboldened by this admin and they’re going after all the usual suspects - Jews, Muslims, and anyone who doesn’t look like the white Americans that they think are the only true Americans.

The bigotry has always been there, but Trump’s given them the green light to come out of the shadows.

All Bill Information (Except Text) for H.R.610 - To distribute Federal funds for elementary and secondary education in the form of vouchers for eligible students and to repeal a certain rule relating to nutrition standards in schools.

This is complete shell game. If the end goal is to get rid of the public school system, the same people currently employed in public schools will simply work for the GOP for-profit scheme. This isn’t reform. This is enriching the private sector.

Yup, and they are at risk of overplaying their hands on all of those issues. “Quickly” and “secretly” seem to be big problems, especially for the ACA, and if the public education issue gets as much attention, it will be an even bigger problem.

All of the Republican voters I know (Trump-sympathetic or no) love the public education system. Granted, I live in a blue state with a top-notch school system, but I have a feeling this would cause an even bigger backlash at town hall meetings, etc.

198
lawhawk  Feb 27, 2017 • 7:31:54am

Trump wants to make a historic hike in defense spending.

Historic how? Trump loves to talk in superlatives and empty platitudes, but laws and budgets require precise language.

So, what is this historic increase he’s calling for? Larger than the hikes in spending during WWII? Korea? Vietnam? Afghanistan/Iraq? Or Reagan’s defense push in the early 1980s?

Reality is that the US defense budget has been between 3-5% of GDP since the 1990s. Where is that additional spending going to go? You can almost bet it wont go for higher wages to the service members. That’s one of the reasons that the Pentagon has pushed for more automation on ships, more technology across all the branches, because people are expensive - training, logistics, etc. So that a new Ford class carrier can do as much as a Nimitz class with a fraction of the manpower. It’s estimated that the Ford class can have a 25% improvement over the Nimitz class in sortie rate, with 25% fewer personnel. Doing more with less - but that costs more in tech.

The new Zumwalt destroyer costs $1 billion, but has fewer people on board.

Everywhere you look, equipment costs keep rising, but the manpower behind them are being reduced because of costs.

So, what is Trump going to buy? More F-35s? Or pushing the F-18 on to the branches that don’t want them? Demanding that the Army buy more tanks it doesn’t need? Artillery it can’t use?

These are the brass tacks that he doesn’t care about.

But gutting the EPA? That’s a GOP wet dream - and even if you eliminate the agency entirely, it’d barely buy a single Ford class carrier - $8.2 billion versus $10+ billion for a Ford class carrier. Zumwalt destroyers are running about a billion a copy. B-2 bombers? Those are $2 billion.

Get rid of NEA? That’s $146 million in the most recent year. That doesn’t even buy you a single F-35.

Everywhere you look, the GOP is getting out the knives to slash and burn the safety net, which further burdens those who can’t afford them to build up a military that already is more than sufficient for our purposes - the ability to fight two wars simultaneously, not counting our nuclear option.

But even more basic than this is that our enemies/rivals aren’t going to fight us strength against strength. They know asymmetrical warfare works. That’s how a guy with an IED can blow up key American assets for a fraction of the cost of a single bombing sortie (not even the aircraft, just the cost to fly the mission).

This is complete shell game. If the end goal is to get rid of the public school system, the same people currently employed in public schools will simply work for the GOP for-profit scheme. This isn’t reform. This is enriching the private sector.

Yeah, I know.

Ah, as I was writing, he’s proposing a ~10% hike in defense spending. What does an extra $50 billion get you in a single fiscal year?

Not much - the military simply can’t grow that fast in a single year. It takes time to train personnel, unless you loosen the physical/academic requirements, which the DoD doesn’t want to do.

You can’t simply wave your fingers and magically increase the number of ships built or tanks purchased or planes ordered. Those require lead times too. And if you’re ordering new stuff from scratch, that timeframe is years, not a single fiscal year. That includes UAVs that were rushed into service after 9/11.

His co-stars from the series are heartbroken. I gather he was a mentor to the younger cast members, like Chloe Bennett.

Until then, I’m sure the Official Administration Response is probably just going be boilerplate denunciations of antisemitism, and blather about Israel. When’s the last time you ever seen them stand up for Roman Catholic kids from Central America fleeing drug cartels?

They could have made their mark almost 3 years ago when he had so many kids from El Salvador and Guatamela making the trek up north to cross the American border…only to be turned back.

If you see how many of them blindly support Trump (metro Detroit, San Diego, Chicago, etc.) even though his policies has affected them, you’ll see where I’m getting at. Some of them are so desperate to curry support with the white Republican majority that they will spew the usual right-wing talking points in the meantime as well.

Heh…. the Daily Caller found a gold nugget here…

Reality is that the Port Authority is where cops from all over NYC metro area love to join because the pay is so much higher, and they can compound their pensions. This is one of the reasons that the Port Authority has such high security costs. The PANYNJ would best be served if the NYPD took over all security at NYC airports and worked out a service agreement on all the cross-border bridges and tunnels (share coverage/security with localities on the NJ side) and phase out the PAPD entirely.

NYC did something similar years back where there were separate Housing Cops and School cops - both those forces were rolled into the NYPD eventually. This would result in a significant cost savings for everyone.

In fact eliminating PAPD would improve security - it would eliminate the BS overlap especially around the WTC and other PAPD facilities because of turf battles. It would also improve response times to accidents/issues at GWB under the apartments.

But it is rather rich that one of the right wing mouthpieces that loves to talk about how they’re for law enforcement, security and all that, will go after those cops and firefighters if they’re protected by union contracts that negotiated favorable benefits.

After the Bush/Gore mess and the transition being notoriously bad, Bush wanted to make sure that his successor was treated so much better - they made sure to set up a transition that would make it as smooth as possible. Obama thought so highly of the Bush transition to Obama that Obama set up a similar transition, but Trump ignored all of it - ignored the transition, ignored the work that goes into setting up a new government, ignored that he’s got nearly 2,000 positions to nominate and get confirmed.

All of it. It’s a fucking shit show because of Trump, and Bush knows it. He knows how damaging this is to US national security. Trump doesn’t care - he’s too busy claiming that he’s going to massively build up the military, ignoring how any of that is actually done.

re: #348 The Vicious Babushka

That’s my in-law’s JCC on Staten Island.

Police are responding to a bomb threat made against the JCC on Staten Island, a spokeswoman for the organization confirmed.

A bomb threat was called into the JCC on Manor Road in Sea View between about 9:30 and 9:45 a.m. on Monday morning, confirmed JCC spokeswoman Ruth Lasser.

The JCC in Sea View has been evacuated and the other JCCs in Arden Heights and Tompkinsville are sheltering in place while police investigate, Lasser said.

Bomb threats have reportedly been made against JCCs in other parts of the country on Monday.

These ongoing and incessant bomb threats greatly increase the security costs to these facilities. It’s one of the higher costs at our shul, and it requires constant vigilance, especially during the High Holy Days and when we have special guests come as speakers from say the Israeli Consulate.

It’s bugnuts insane, but all these costs can put a serious strain on budgets of these Jewish institutions - and could lead to their closures down the line.

It’s possible. It also increases the costs to local law enforcement - as deploying the bomb squads and emergency response is quite expensive and gets passed on to the local community in the form of higher taxes or service cuts elsewhere.

I’m thinking whoever called in that threat to the JCC on Staten Island may have made a big mistake: the NYPD is one of the few police agencies in this country with the resources and experience to efficiently investigate these sort of “threats” and find and arrest the perps. Sadly, threat-call vandalism, if done right, is damn difficult to track down, and is a low priority for most LE departments (usually regarded, until/unless something bad actually happens as a variety of “prank”) but the NYPD is an exception to the rule.

Of course, the bomb-threatener is most likely some asshole HS kid, calling in from his parent’s basement, but you can;t be too careful…..

Yeah, this is one of those things that might and should have FBI involvement b/c of the multistate angles to this, and the NYPD can do only so much within its jurisdiction.

But Sessions and Trump have de-emphasized terror threats unless they’re Radical Islamic terrorists. White supremacists, neo Nazis, and other right wing groups get a pass.

Obama’s photographer, Pete Souza, used his iPhone to take photographs and post them on Instagram, but they all look more professional than anything out of Trump’s White House.

The pictures taken be 45’s photographer are extremely bad. I think the list above by lawhawk in #403 barely begins to describe the errors.

Then, there was this little charmer, whose arrest was a tiny blip on the radar:

He told the undercover operative he wanted to do something on a “big scale” and write on the building “in the spirit of Dylann Roof,” according to the criminal complaint filed against him…On Dec. 26, McDowell posted a message on his Facebook page stating “I love love to act what u think,” accompanied by a link to Temple Emanu-El, a conservative synagogue in Myrtle Beach…

And although—Unlike Roof, McDowell had compiled a lengthy criminal record before he was apprehended, with his first arrest occurring 11 years ago on a charge of simple assault. He has multiple convictions for burglary, and has also been convicted of assault of a high and aggravated nature, petty larceny, third-degree assault and malicious injury to property…

his mama said, “I raised him better than that. Me and my ex-husband had him in church every Sunday…

That looks like it. Very impressive. I’m surprised it wasn’t destroyed on Kristallnacht, or has it been restored?

wiki page says that it was badly damaged in the pogrom in 1938 but was the only synagogue in town that remained standing, although no longer used as a synagogue.

It even survived the bombings. It was restored in 1950 and then fully renovated to its original state between 1989 -1994

“Asked about Trump’s claim that the media is the “enemy of the people,” Bush warned that an independent press is essential to democracy and that denouncing the press at home makes it difficult for the United States to preach democratic values abroad.

“I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy,” Bush said. “We need an independent media to hold people like me to account.

“Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse power, whether it be here or elsewhere,” he added.”

Yup. But further down the thread, she will say that Christianity has undergone “critique” and “has or had” problems that Islam is experiencing.

Good thing I don’t generalize all of Christianity like she does with Islam. At least I’m able to acknowledge the fact that Christianity is NOT a monolithic bloc and that it too has liberal movements in addition to conservative movements. Islam is no different in that respect either.
