Speaking of violent war against your own people…

It only a matter of time before Republicans start trying it here.

Trump has only nice things to say about violent foreign dictators because that is what he wants to do in the US.

That same transcript also showed Trump touting that US submarines were on patrol in waters off the Korean peninsula.

The vainglorious ignoramus can’t help himself. He’s got to show he knows stuff and always seems to leak key details to people who should not have the information.

Hate to sound like The Major, but begin teaching yourself how to covertly document events, including having multi-level documentation, i.e. you have a camera person, and a camera person covering the camera person, and a camera person covering that camera person.

Not the first time:

Comments by Duterte
In 2016, 27 years after the incident, Duterte made remarks in one of his campaign rallies relating to the 1989 hostage crisis and the raping of the Australian missionary. Duterte made the controversial joke on April 12, when he talked to a crowd about Australian missionary Jacqueline Hamill who had been kidnapped, raped and killed in 1989 and said, “She was so beautiful. I thought, the mayor should have been first.” [17] This caused outrage from human rights and women’s rights advocates, as well as his presidential campaign rivals which condemned Duterte remarks as insensitive.[18] Duterte claimed to have ordered the storming of Davao Metrodiscom during the April 1989 hostage incident.[19] Duterte apologized for the way he spoke but insisted the remark was not a “joke” as reported by some media outlets and that he had spoken the remark in a narrative and out of “utter anger” when he recalled the incident.[20][21]

The Guttmacher Institute also found that “no program of any kind has ever shown success in convincing young people to postpone sex from age 17, when they typically first have intercourse, until marriage,” and that teens who claim to practice abstinence often still have oral sex, which can put them at risk of STDs even if they aren’t having intercourse.

Trump will nationalize the coal mines to fuel the 300 new naval vessels.

There is still one coal fired ship in US commercial (though not naval) service.
SS Badger.

SS Badger is a passenger and vehicle ferry in the United States that has been in service on Lake Michigan since 1953. Currently, the ship shuttles between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin,[a] connecting U.S. Highway 10 (US 10) between those two cities. It is the last coal-fired passenger vessel operating on the Great Lakes, and was designated a National Historic Landmark on January 20, 2016.

I don’t know of any coal fired naval vessels anywhere in the world, but the historic Peruvian hospital ship and transport Puno burns llama dung.

Unless they’re going to make movies about retired dril lseregants, I don’t see any roles for him in the near future. Here’s the thing though that gets me about conservatives in the entertainment industry. They complain about being blacklisted when there literally was one for lefty actors in the 60’s. A real honest to God one I’m not saying all of them necessarily thought that was a good thing but I just roll my eyes when someone like Tim Allen who I honestly never found all that funny cries about being blacklisted.

I’m always amused by conservatives who accuse Norquist of being a “secret mooslim”, but still support his economic agenda. I once read something along the lines of, “Grover’s economic ideas are great for our country, but he’s an agent of the Muslim Brotherhood out to destroy America.”

Cliff was the biggest music star in Britain before The Beatles, and The Young Ones was one of his biggest hits (1962; 5 weeks at #1). He was huge everywhere except the U.S. — in 1964, when The Beatles exploded globally, Cliff out-sold them worldwide.

US movement conservatism is a backlash against the end of Jim Crow and other officially sanctioned blatant racist segregation and discrimination. A pretty heavy article from Market Watch, of all places - It’s time to plan an escape route, for you and your money, from Trumpland.

How do you get here? First you lay the groundwork with a long-term, cynical marketing campaign against the “mainstream” press. Then a presidential candidate urges his supporters to ” knock the crap ” out of protestors.

Then he gets his supporters so mad at the press that a reporter needs to be escorted from a rally by the Secret Service for her own protection.

Then the candidate jokes about whether he would ever kill reporters . Then he calls them the “enemy of the people.” Then one of his colleagues physically attacks one of them.

And at each stage along the process, some people cheer him, others defend him, and others shrug it off. Each unsanctioned outrage enables the next. Sixty-two million people voted for Trump. The Republican Party and the people of Montana have now legitimized violence. The next step in the sequence is obvious.

Trump ‘complained to Belgian PM of difficulty setting up golf resorts in EU’

A complete ass.

Donald Trump offered an insight into his approach to political life during his 30 hours in Belgium while munching “lots of” Belgian chocolates, it has been reported.

Le Soir, a Belgian daily newspaper, reported that the US president acclaimed the chocolates, which were a gift from the Belgian government, during a meeting with the country’s prime minister, Charles Michel.

“These are the best,” he said, before explaining that his ambivalent attitude towards the EU was a consequence of his experiences trying to set up businesses, notably golf resorts, on the continent.

“He made a lot of references to his personal journey. He explained, for example, the functioning of Europe on the basis of his difficulties in doing business in Ireland,” one source told the Francophone paper.

A second source told the newspaper: “Every time we talk about a country, he remembered the things he had done. Scotland? He said he had opened a club. Ireland? He said it took him two and a half years to get a license and that did not give him a very good image of the European Union. One feels that he wants a system where everything can be realised very quickly and without formalities.”

Now, I understand the sentiment behind the similar “he who fights monsters must take care he doesn’t become one” concept, but those two quotes seem to say that ALL fighting against injustice is bad. How does that make sense? Am I misinterpreting?

Given that Sinclair continues to purchase other media outlets, even more of our nation may turn into a vast wasteland, where truth and justice will become myths and we will all learn to worship Herr Trump.

When we get to Robber Barons v2.0 in the US, the plan is for the media to be completely owned to prevent a repeat of that muckraking business that derailed Robber Barons v1.0 back in the day.

Glad you’re here, because I wanted to ask you about something you posted earlier - a couple of quotes you’ve often repeated here, to the effect of:

“What you resist, you become.”

I’m oversimplifying NAZI economic policy here, but you get the drift.

Germany had the advantage of ‘free labour’. Much easier to build infrastructure etc. when you only have to feed the labourers and not very well at that.

Which is another reason the capitalist system had no problems with Nazi Germany. Low labour costs equals higher profits.

Very good points. For example, the true nature of the GOP base is a seething ball of white-hot rage. That rage can be controlled at will by any demagogue that captures that mob’s fancy, as Trump has presently done.

If you get overcome with emotion, your discernment goes down the drain. It’s why appeal to emotion is a truly ancient propaganda trick.
And for some things, resistance is nil without understanding.

Good points. Thing is, I’m not comfortable with dismissing anger altogether as an invalid and unhealthy emotion. It depends so much on context and how you channel it, after all. For example, were the people who flooded airports to protest the Muslim ban feeling anger? Of course! But unless you’re a trumpchump GOPer cultist, you wouldn’t condemn them for that. Anger is energizing, if nothing else. Apathy and resignation never helped end an unjust practice.

If you look back at 2016, you’ll see how the overriding moods of the electorate were anger, frustration, and fear. HRC and Obama tried to appeal to better angels (Michelle Obama as well, with her classic “when they go low, we go high” comments) but it ended up being a miserable failure in terms of meaningful downballot victories and the infamous EC results.

Why? Because, unlike in 2008 (where there was also plenty of anger, frustration and fear), not enough people were looking for “hope” - they wanted revenge. They wanted to throw a brick through the window of a government they perceived as having failed them. Bernie and tRrump both appealed to that, but of course tRump was far more successful since he threw white resentment/racist grievance into the mix (for which the GOPer base was primed anyway).

And this comment left earlier sums it up well:

I have to admit that I’m pissed off by the lack of hellfire coming from the Dems. They have nothing to lose by going full-throttle attack mode. I’m not a Democrat, but the Republicans have more or less declared themselves the enemy of my country as I see it, and of myself personally.

I would like to see Democrats become vicious, underhanded, unfair, brutal, merciless, and relentless. The GOP is by any measure a confederacy of dunces. That the Dems can’t find it in themselves to destroy it is disheartening.

I daresay a lot of independent and intermittent voters felt the same way, and it’s why they keep on staying home :(

If Trump actually does get removed, I think it would set off the long-awaited GOP civil war, which would scupper their legislative goals.

Even if we do end up with a smoothly functioning authoritarian regime that accomplishes its legislative goals, that is what people voted for. The opportunity to head off this disaster was missed in 2016. The only option now is to resist and fight back in the future. Trump is an existential threat to this program in a way that Pence or Ryan aren’t.

That is not how I interpret them.

The problem when fighting evil is a person risks becoming Lokai in reaction to Bele.

Two sides of the same coin.

The anger that evil creates can cloud a person’s perception and compromise their ethics. They may decide that they need to fight fire with fire.

No person thinks they are evil. Duterte and his supporters think they are doing good. Herr Schicklegruber and his supporters thought they were doing good. But they aren’t and weren’t. They’ve become evil themselves.

So those aphorisms of mine are to remind myself how easy it is to step over the line. The one about being angered by evil resonates strongly with me because, as I noted earlier, I am an addict. I’ve spent much of my life stoned out of my mind on it. I was not a nice person and it cost me dearly.

So I remind myself constantly that I can descend back into that darkness with ease. Those aphorisms I’m fond of are some of those reminders.

I’m starting to think Trump is suffering from dementia and Ivanka & Jared are there to protect him from discovery and/or hurting himself.

I’ve thought that for a while. After the election it became especially obvious - no matter what the function was, either Evita or Kushner were there.

They’re there to escort him out if he starts gibbering any worse than usual.

A pretty heavy article from Market Watch, of all places - It’s time to plan an escape route, for you and your money, from Trumpland.

I want to repeat this part because I just saw the CBS Evening News report about gianforte’s repulsive victory party and equally repulsive supporters:

“And at each stage along the process, some people cheer him, others defend him, and others shrug it off. Each unsanctioned outrage enables the next. Sixty-two million people voted for Trump. The Republican Party and the people of Montana have now legitimized violence. The next step in the sequence is obvious.”

What’s it going to take for this mass psychosis gripping so much of America to end?

Jared Kushner and Russia’s ambassador to Washington discussed the possibility of setting up a secret and secure communications channel between Trump’s transition team and the Kremlin, using Russian diplomatic facilities in an apparent move to shield their pre-inauguration discussions from monitoring, according to U.S. officials briefed on intelligence reports.

I wonder what Jared thinks the NSA does?

A defence attorney allegedly attempted to intimidate an undocumented rape victim by implying she would be deported under Donald Trump’s new attack on immigrants, offered her $3,000 and asked her to recant her testimony against the alleged rapist.

They also called her hub to pressure him, and suggested he could simply beat the rapist.

She is a damn hero here. Despite the threat of deportation from the defence lawyer, she called up the Maryland AG office to report the obstruction, witness tampering, and solicitation of a crime.

The AG’s office set up a sting where she called back and the fellow repeated his requests to her. He and his accomplice have now been charged with obstruction of justice and witness tampering. A finding of guilty will see him disbarred.

I particularly liked the “Arrest warrant issued for Bikram Choudhury, the hot-yoga guru accused of sexual harassment”. It’s not often you get a judge willing to issue a warrant to arrest someone based on a monetary judgment that doesn’t involve children (i.e., back child support).

But how do we get rid of this traitor? If he’s just locked up, Trump will pardon him.
If Trump is locked up too, Pence will pardon him and Trump.

Doing anything about this would require that Republicans be loyal to this country, and having to accept minorities was something they just can’t handle, so they’ve gone Russian.

The British let Coventry be bombed, with no defenses and no evacuations, rather than compromise the Enigma info source.

Smoking guns weren’t leaked before the election, because they thought he was going to lose and keeping those info channels was important. It’s only now that he’s in the big chair that disclosure is more important than protecting sources and methods.

3. In the case of our allies, didn’t want to be guilty of influencing our elections themselves

In addition to their discussion about setting up the communications channel, Kushner, Flynn and Kislyak also talked about arranging a meeting between a representative of Trump and a “Russian contact” in a third country whose name was not identified, according to the anonymous letter.

The Post reported in April that Erik Prince, the former founder of the private security firm Blackwater and an informal adviser to the Trump transition team, met on Jan. 11 — nine days before Trump’s inauguration — in the Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean with a representative of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Anonymous letter received by the Post in mid-December.

Which traitor. There seem to be so many these days.

Moreover, with Michael Flynn, it seems that Mike Pence is entangled in this mess as well. He may wind up going down with Donald Trump.

If only Trump and some of his cronies went down, but not Pence, then I imagine Pence’s remaining term would be tainted by the case dragging into next year. It would likely stifle any legislative agenda he has as well as motivate Democrats to get out and vote.

The longer this goes on, the more likely it seems to me a wave election is coming.

I’ve given it a fair amount of thought. For real.
It is especially alarming that conservatives seem to want to expand, rather than rein in, “civil asset forfeiture.” Are we coming to the day when a right wing sheriff, like Clark, could seize your property on the grounds that you “support terrorism,” just because you spoke out against the deportation of Muslims? They have established beyond any doubt that they can steal property without gaining a criminal conviction, or even a credible charge, in the same case. These assholes love this kind of facetious middle school reasoning. Many small town police departments, and some not so small ones, live primarily on fines, seizures, and (of course) federal grants.

US has regressed to developing nation status, MIT economist warns

The economist describes a two-track economy with on the one hand 20 per cent of the population that is educated and enjoys good jobs and supportive social networks.

On the other hand, the remaining 80 per cent, he said, are part of the US’ low-wage sector, where the world of possibility has shrunk and people are burdened with debts and anxious about job security.

Mr Temin used a model, which was created by Nobel Prize winner Arthur Lewis and designed to understand developing nations, to describe how far inequalities have progressed in the US.

When applied to the US, Mr Temin said that “the Lewis model actually works”.
