The London terrorists were shot down like rabid dogs, er, dealt with as an imminent threat. Oh well, sucks to be them but it occurred to me that it has been a long damn time since London police shot 3 people in one incident.

Speaking of a white man’s world, here is a clipping from the 3 March 1865 edition of the Semi-weekly Standard, of North Carolina:
First notice how desperate the Confederacy was, for troops, for them to look at such a measure.
Then consider how desperate the confederates were, to be afraid of such a measure going through.

Slavery, in some form, has been part of the human condition for most of our known history. One of the most basic rules of slavery is “never give weapons to the slaves.” That is absolutely amazing that the Confederate House passed the bill and the Confederate Senate came within one vote of passing it.

“No greater calamity could befall the Confederacy than the adoption of such a measure.”
Slavery and the racial hierarchy really were more important to them than their alleged independence. I wonder how many white aristocrats anticipated something like Jim Crow and thought that defeat might not be so bad after all. They had every reason to believe that the Radical Republicans would be thwarted and slavery in all but name could continue. They would have been right if they had. It took a hundred years to start what should have begun in 1865, and the process continues to this day.

He rescued the kitteh from a trash bin.
Took a short break; my wife wanted to use me as a rack so she could measure a length of cloth she will turn into new drapes for our home. (I’m good for something anyway.)
Turns out the drapery cloth is thirty-five feet long, which she says will work for all our windows.
(Driving to buy drapes would be a huge trip, might not find what you want at the first store, have to hike around three states. She’d rather make drapes.)

We had an avocado electric range and refrigerator. They were awful (and hard to clean).
Fortunately it died last year. Out it went, replaced by a black gas range and a black refrigerator. (Both are more efficient, and look a heck of a lot better than the old ones.)
Now if we can get rid of this awful carpeting… .

Someone worked out that the alleged number of servings in his kits presumes an average daily calorie intake of 700 calories if you were to stretch it for the time Bakker claims they will last.
So not only is he grifting, he is cheating you on the grift (since you can’t survive on 700 calories).
Donald Trump Now One of the Most Popular Street Names for Crystal Meth (goes to Newsweek, more at the link):
Since launching his campaign for—and then winning—the presidency, Donald Trump has permeated just about every facet of life in America. That is true even for the street-level drug trade, it turns out: A new study from addictions.com has found that his name is the most popular celebrity code word for methamphetamine.

The ties and belts got wider and the colors got brighter. Still remember Mom and Dad taking me to the clothing store in the 70s for a couple Polyester Leisure Suits in bright yellow, blue, green and red. One of the genealogy TV shows, I think it was Who Do You Think You Are, or maybe it was the Genealogy Roadshow, or perhaps both, covered stories where 19th century ancestors were addicted to opiates. IIRC, opium/morphine was pushed hard by the medical establishment in the South, especially for women.
I don’t know if we can draw a hard rule that opiates = drugs of white majority and cocaine = drugs of the black minority. Yet substance abuse goes all the way back into human history, and it is hardly something new, and I suspect we could follow fashion, per se, in drug use in specific cultures.

Contrast with 1962 and the Cuban Missile Crisis. When nuclear missiles were first confirmed in Cuba, President Kennedy had US ambassadors brief allied leaders in person. The ambassador in France offered to provide the reconnaissance photos themselves to President DeGaulle so French experts could confirm them. DeGaulle, a most unlikely candidate for any kind of snow-job, responded, “No, the word of the President of the United States is good enough for me.” He immediately announced his public support for Kennedy.

I would suggest that historically this was nearly always the case, at least since 1900. Everyone recognized the USA had the best intel and the best minds available (with a few notable exceptions) and that no American president (with a certain exception) would knowingly make a demonstrably false statement of international importance.
We’ve gone from that to being the laughingstock of the world in just a few short months.
Trump rejects intel from the IC, because he doesn’t trust them. He has stripped the State Department of a large number of its experts. His SoS has no experience suitable for the job, and he’s basically only a figurehead, anyway. He even rejects the advice of his own military advisors.

Good for Mr. Beatty for shutting her down. Every Muslim is no more responsible for terrorist attacks than every White male is responsible for Dylan Roof or Jeremy Christian’s killings.
Many of the names of Roman emperors have been repeatedly reused by parents down through the centuries, but one name almost never heard is…
One of those emperors no one ever remembers, probably because his common, post decease, name is too hard to pronounce.
Yet he may have, with the emphasis on “may”, had a role in shaping what we accept as traditional religion today. He brought his own region’s sun-god (whose name is affixed to him post-death) into Rome and there was no doubt some syncretism among the various sun-god practices.
It has always fascinated me, this period of the past, as the 3rd century is when it all came down, so to speak, in the European theatre, with the rise of Christianity as we know it today, and the Roman empire transitioned from the ancient world into the nebulous proto-system that became the middle ages.
It was during Elagabalus’ brief reign that Callistus I was “pope”, as the term later was called, but then he was the Bishop of Rome. It was Callistus and his conflicts, and then the conflicts of his immediate successors, that defined what “orthodox” Christianity was and is today. And it is this Callistus whose name is on the first significant Christian cemetery where several popes were buried.
What gets very interesting, and something which our entertainment industry whether big screen or small has missed as a probably great plot for a series, is that Callistus is causally connected to the famous mistress Marcia
.
One wonders how much the social lives of the upper crust and ruling families of Rome, had to do with the ruling elders of the early Christian church in Rome. It’s not something many Christians in America today will contemplate, but a non-trivial role in their practices and beliefs are tied into the seedy lives of the Roman rich.
Well, I need to hit the rack. Good night, y’all, for varying definitions of night.
Regarding last night’s attack in London,
Officers from the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command have arrested 12 people in Barking in connection with last night’s attacks. In a statement, the Met said.
That’s quite a roundup, I’d say. I can’t help but wonder if those arrested were under surveillance by British authorities; after all, the three attackers died and obviously couldn’t be interrogated.
Reminder: Monday is the 50th anniversary of the start of the Six Day War, the brief conflict whose effects are still very much with us.
One of the glaring weaknesses of Wikipedia - a great deal of early Christian topics are basically regurgitation of the official Vatican publications.
There are some notable exceptions, especially when it comes to the first century. But if you look at later centuries - - peoples, issues - then there are gaping holes in the sources and references for claims.
There is very, very little surviving original material before the 4th century. And most of what we think we know about writings of the first 4 centuries (or so) of the millennium come from much later copies done during the middle ages.
One of the more clear things from doing genealogy is how quickly mythology settles into a family.
I couldn’t sleep this morning so I flipped between CNN and Fox (MSNBC was doing “Lockdown San Antonio”). The latest talking point from Fox is “you can’t fight terror with teddy bears, flowers, and candles.” I heard it at least six times from both “experts” and the morning crew. They are pimping fear and the travel ban. I finally settled on a PBS show “Touching Nature.”
Churchill, on guard against Socialism:
It was 1946 and the new Labour government had started nationalizing all the major industries in Britain. Churchill, then the opposition leader, went into the parliamentary men’s room and found the Labour PM, Clement Atlee, relieving himself at one end of the long trough-type urinal. Churchill took up a position at the opposite end, a good ten feet away, and proceeded to do the same. Atlee said, “What’s wrong, Winston, feeling unsociable today?”
Churchill responded, “No, Clem, it’s just that every time you see something big, you try to nationalize it.”

Police shoot concrete alligator
INDEPENDENCE, Mo., June 2 (UPI) — A police officer in Independence, Mo., who thought he was killing an alligator on the loose, discovered he had shot a life-size concrete lawn ornament.
The police department ended up apologizing to Rick Sheridan, the cement gator’s owner, WDAF-TV, Kansas City, reported. Sheridan said he heard gunfire as he worked in his garage last weekend and went out to investigate, discovering several police officers with their guns drawn.
“The officer fired two rounds, and killed my concrete, ornamental alligator,” Sheridan said.

Morning, Lizards:
I don’t usually feel prompted to go off on rants about “Teh Suck Media”, tbh, I think the “MSM” does a reasonably credible job when it comes to “straight” news (political slants are an entirely different matter) - but when I saw the headline in today’s NYT on my doorstep (“2 Attacks in London As A Reeling Nation Faces More Terror”) - I went off to go check British media online, then some domestic sources, and THEN I got pissed.
Not that I’m an expert, but one thing I know from knowing the smattering of English and Scottish friends I have, is that Brits do NOT “reel” easily or readily, even in really bad circumstances: and things like the London Bridge attacks, horrible as they are, may upset, disgust, grieve or anger most of the population: but the main response (and I’m trying to filter for possible media biases here) over there, as we saw with the Manchester bombing, seem to be way less “reeling”, and more of a firm determination NOT to let their lives be ruled by fear, to carry on more-or-less normally as the best way to give a big “F—YOU” to terrorists (not that they’re ignoring it, just not letting it run them).
And also: (again, possible media bias); one major difference over how terrorism incidents are being reported and reacted to over there, is that the reflexive Muslim-bashing that these attacks always seem to call forth from US commentariats is either absent, or muted, or left to “underground” media. In the wake of the Manchester and London Bridge attacks, most of the calls to “deport them all” seem to emanate mainly from this side of the Atlantic.
Britain (being populated by humans) is, of course, far from a Ideal Utopia, but the way they avoid freakouts over terror attacks like this is, IMO, way better than the way we do: which seems to be mostly pants-wetting panic larded with violent xenophobia.
Why can’t we at least TRY to do better?

An interesting tidbit about the London attack last night…….
Salahudee Jayabdeen, 40, said one of the suspected attackers had been forcibly removed from a local mosque called Jabir Bin Zyad after questioning the Imam during a service.
He said he had seen the man in the area for the past year.
” It was about two months ago and he started questioning what the imam was saying. I can’t remember exactly what it was about but was asked to leave. He didn’t want to and was forcibly taken out.”
Were I a betting man, I’d be willing to wager a couple of bucks that the attackers (so far unnamed) were known to the authorities.

Because we have Fox News setting the tone for all media, thereby putting a large section of the populace in freakout mode.
This is why Rupert wants Sky News so bad - so he can do the same in Europe. If that deal goes through, things will get a lot more like they are here.

And of course, the fact that the overwhelming likelihood is that the London Bridge attackers (like the Westminster and Manchester ones) are/were native-born citizens is going to be lost on Peter King (like so much else)…
Peter King, IRA supporter and enthusiastic counter-terrorism advocate
By Peter Finn
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, March 5, 2011In 1985, the Irish government boycotted the St. Patrick’s Day parade in New York City, the biggest celebration in the Irish American calendar. The cause of its umbrage was Peter T. King, that year’s grand marshal and someone the Irish government said was an “avowed” supporter of a terrorist organization, the Irish Republican Army.
King, then a local politician on Long Island, was one of the most zealous American defenders of the militant IRA and its campaign to drive the British out of Northern Ireland. He argued that IRA violence was an inevitable response to British repression and that the organization had to be understood in the context of a centuries-long struggle for independence.
“The British government is a murder machine,” King said. He described the IRA, which mastered the car bomb as an instrument of urban terror, as a “legitimate force.” And he compared Gerry Adams, the leader of Sinn Fein, the IRA’s political wing, to George Washington.
A quarter-century later, King is chairman of the powerful House Homeland Security Committee. After the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and the Pentagon, he became an uncompromising supporter of the Bush administration’s counterterrorism policies. And he has suggested that President Obama “use the word ‘terrorism’ more often” so people understand the seriousness of his purpose.
As King prepares to hold hearings Thursday on what he called “the extent of the radicalization” of American Muslims, his past as a defender of armed struggle has led critics to assert he is imposing a double standard.

So, after mentioning Trump’s buddy Nigel I was doing a search on the s-o-b and found this.
Rawstory - ‘Calls for internment will grow’: Fox contributor linked to Russia scandal suggests camps for British Muslims
Fox News contributor Nigel Farage, a former British politician who campaigned for Brexit, suggested on Sunday that Muslims in Britain could be put into internment camps because of terrorist attacks in Britain.
During an interview on Fox & Friends, host Pete Hegseth asked Farage “how the borderless world that London lived in for so long — led by globalists — contributes to the ability for our enemy to infiltrate us and attack us.”
“A lot of people have abused the word refugee,” Farage complained. “The British government, when they were pushed by people like me a few years ago, said they would use the power to stop people who have fought, for example, in Syria from coming back into our country. Over 400 known jidhadi fighters from Syria have come back into Britain and we’ve only stopped one.”
“I hope that [British Prime Minister] Teresa May goes a lot further,” he continued, “and says that not one person who has fought in Syria will be let back into our country.”
According to Farage, a growing number of Britons now supporting putting Muslims in internment camps.

re: #323 ObserverArt
From that RawStory link to Nigel Farage’s gibberings, I see that he did try to “qualify” his comments just a tad:
According to Farage, a growing number of Britons now supporting putting Muslims in internment camps.
“This is now the third terrorist incident that has happened in my country in the space of as many months,” he explained. “And the mood that I get now is we want some real action. We don’t just want speeches.”
“And if there is not action, the calls for internment will grow,” Farage added. “We have 3,000 people on sort of a known terrorist list. And we’re watching their actions. But a further 20,000 people who are persons of interests, namely they’re linked by some way to extremist organizations. Unless we see the public getting tough, you will see public calls for those 3,000 to be arrested.”
Farage admitted that the move “might alienate decent fair-minded Muslims.”
Gee: mighty white of him to even admit that there might even BE “decent fair-minded Muslims”! What a swell guy!
And given the source, I’m thinking those numbers he’s citing have been freshly extracted from his own backside: and most of those “calls for internment” have originated there as well. But then, this IS a politician for whom “Fox News Commentator” is a sort of promotion….

Interesting British political note (via BBC): While “campaigning” per se is still suspended in the wake of the London Bridge attacks, Labour’s Jeremy Corbyn still had a few sharp words for the Government:
In an attack on Theresa May, Mr Corbyn said “you cannot protect the public on the cheap” and called for the police and security services to “get the resources they need, not 20,000 police cuts.”
“Theresa May was warned by the Police Federation but she accused them of crying wolf”, he added.

A friend of one of the suspected attackers says he had reported him to the anti-terror hotline, but no action was taken.
The man, who asked not to be named, told the BBC’s Asian Network that the pair had spoken about previous attacks and he was shocked at what he had heard.
“We spoke about a particular attack that had happened and, like most radicals, he had a justification for anything, everything and anything,” he said. “That day I realised that I need to contact the authorities.”
But the friend claims the suspected attacker was not arrested and was allowed to keep his passport.
“I phoned the anti-terrorist hotline and spoke to the gentleman,” he said. “I told him about our conversation and why I think he has been radicalised.
“I did my bit, but the authorities didn’t do their bit.”
The BBC has asked Scotland Yard for a response.

And as they all try to escape, they find they need to do something about Trump, he is now dead weight lying on the floor crying.
As they try to pick up and then pull Trump to safety they realize he is too much weight to carry as he is no longer capable of helping save himself. It is getting crucial, they face all of them dying if they continue with saving Trump.
They decide for their own futures they must save themselves and they leave Trump behind, still crying, still asking “why me, why, why…????”
Earlier today, President @realDonaldTrump tweeted about the #London terror attack as it pertains to the gun control debate. pic.twitter.com/wXRb7OWzau

You mean as it DOESN’T pertain to the gun control debate. https://t.co/tHmeA5f3zm

I think it absolutely does pertain to the gun debate. Had guns and ammo been as easy to get and hoard there we’d be seeing 70 deaths rather than 7. It isn’t even a stretch.

Okay…I don’t know if this is shopped or not…sure as hell doesn’t look it. A photo of the original photo would be killer.

If that is real it explains a lot. True teeny peeny syndrome.

Right. At the Pulse night club, ONE GUY killed 49 people, because he had guns.
Adam Lanza killed 26 people, because he had guns.
The list goes on, but imagine what 3 people with guns could have done.
Noticed there was a lot of 80s music choices on this thread, so here’s mine. I just discovered recently Depeche Mode’s 1986 album “Black Celebration”. As a teenager, I was more into their singles at the time. However, I notice one of the tracks from this album- from 1986!!- is a full throated broadside against what we now call today “Fake News”. It’s called “New Dress”, and here’s a contemporaneous live performance of it. The verses are parodies of UK tabloid headlines, always ending with: “PRINCESS DI HAS GOT A NEW DRESS”. However the significant lyrics are in the bridge:
You can’t change the world
But you can change the facts
And when you change the facts
You change points of view
If you change points of view
You may change a vote
And when you change a vote
You may change the world
