“It [tax reform] is more important to us than anything that we get tax reform done,” Ryan told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo. “Because we think it is absolutely critical for strong economic growth.”
And yet everyday we are told how the “Trump economy” is booming with a record high stock market, low unemployment, positive job growth….what gives??
So, Trump is golfing today. Meanwhile, Congress is still waiting on him to sign the Russian sanctions???

Looks like he has an out re: Russia kicking our people out.
“I didn’t sign it because we need our people there.”
Martin Longman has a good essay on verifying our vote. Nothing really new; just a good summary.
The way things stand, I can’t blame people for lacking confidence in the integrity of the result. In general, if a system is vulnerable to hacking, it will be hacked. The protections we have in place are clearly insufficient to give the people confidence, and that’s a dangerous situation for a system that relies on the consent of the governed.

That’s an interesting question: How long can he sit on it?
It’s been long enough. Now that Putin is retaliating, Orange Twitler have an excuse to refuse to sign the bill, arguing that Russia’s response will hurt America and so he must veto the bill to prevent all our diplomats being expelled.
re: #6 Belafon
That’s an interesting question: How long can he sit on it?
After some research: He has ten days or it’s a pocket veto, unless Congress adjourns. Another interesting effect of Democrats not closing shop.
So, if he doesn’t sign it, Congress can act in ten days.

From research, it’s a pocket veto. Congress would have to override the veto.
Edit: I stand corrected.
Pocket Veto. If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law.

I dunno: with a competent Administration in office, I’d be thinking this is all a carefully-choreographed dance-routine;
1) So Far:
Congress enacts sanctions to piss of the Russians: Trump “regretfully” agrees to sign on: Russians retaliate by booting US personnel:
2) Next steps:
Trump sends the Secretary of State senior diplomatic people Ivanka to Moscow to talk things over: in a couple of days, there’s a huge public BFD ceremony where it’s announced “all differences are resolved” : nobody is expelled: we get our property back, they get their property back (the ones Obama seized); President Asshole gets to dump on Obama some more - and, buried in all the onanistic boilerplate: a veto of the sanctions bill, with the Administration’s “promise” to “revisit the issue as the situation warrants”.
Of course, this is presuming a competent Administration; with the Trump circus, who knows….

Wouldn’t it be pretty freaking illegal for Trump to cut the payments off? Seems to me that would put the government in violation of its own law.
There’s no way doing that would avoid ending up in court.
re: #45 Eclectic Cyborg
Yes, the money has to flow if it is part of the law.
The only way to turn off a spigot is to turn off the entire funding machine, i.e., a shutdown of the government because a funding bill has not passed.
This is basically what Trump is threatening. He’s willing to let the entire US government go without funding.
But coming from a guy who liked bankruptcy court in order to skip paying, we should not be surprised by this.
re: #47 makeitstop
There’s no way doing that would avoid ending up in court.
It could be an impeachable offense.
As far as I know, never has there been a case where the Secretary of the Treasury refused to disburse money that was required by law.
Funding bills in Congress are done so the checks don’t bounce. Of course US Treasury checks never will bounce because the Fed will accept said checks at their window in lieu of Fed notes.

re: #65 sagehen
It’s the majority party who decides when they’re in session and when they’re in recess.
While Republicans control the Senate now, the only way they can formally adjourn — which would set up a period when recess appointments are allowable — is to pass an adjournment resolution. The problem is that Democrats can filibuster that resolution, which they would do to prevent Trump from making recess appointments.

Naaah, I think it’s the other way round: the Congressional GOP (House and Senate) could probably care less about what hacks/ideologues/idiots Trump appoints to all those vacancies, assuming he’d even bother: Dems keeping Congress (House? Senate? I’m unclear on the rules) in pro forma session is what’s more-likely to piss them off. Not enough to avoid their vacations, though: they can still gripe about Democratic obstruction from their home computers/cellphones.

Noteworthy is Xi’s choice to wear camo, and not a Mao suit, and to review the troops in a jeep, and not a limo. He’s trying to appear like a commander-in-chief (which he is, technically), and China watchers can read a lot of not-so-subtle meaning in that decision.
If any other prez had done half the things Trump has done…a third…a fucking TENTH…he’d be gone like Enron. What’s happened to us?

At this point i suspect Republicans probably don’t want him making recess appointments either and are more than happy to let the Dems continue regardless of their griping about obstruction.
Someone told Trump there is this thing called “recess appointments”. That is when he started attacking Sessions in an attempt to get him to resign. The Senate GOP members will not let him replace Sessions with a recess appointment - but they are very happy to blame democrats for this “obstruction”. Keeps them cosy with Trump and Sessions.

In April 2013, a little more than two years before Trump rode the escalator to the ground floor of Trump Tower to kick off his presidential campaign, police burst into Unit 63A of the high-rise and rounded up 29 suspects in two gambling rings. The operation, which prosecutors called “the world’s largest sports book,” was run out of condos in Trump Tower—including the entire fifty-first floor of the building. In addition, unit 63A—a condo directly below one owned by Trump—served as the headquarters for a “sophisticated money-laundering scheme” that moved an estimated $100 million out of the former Soviet Union, through shell companies in Cyprus, and into investments in the United States. The entire operation, prosecutors say, was working under the protection of Alimzhan Tokhtakhounov, whom the FBI identified as a top Russian vor closely allied with Semion Mogilevich. In a single two-month stretch, according to the federal indictment, the money launderers paid Tokhtakhounov $10 million.Tokhtakhounov, who had been indicted a decade earlier for conspiring to fix the ice-skating competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics, was the only suspect to elude arrest. For the next seven months, the Russian crime boss fell off the radar of Interpol, which had issued a red alert. Then, in November 2013, he suddenly appeared live on international television—sitting in the audience at the Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. Tokhtakhounov was in the VIP section, just a few seats away from the pageant owner, Donald Trump.

I’ll bet the most stressful night for my parents when I first got my driver license was prom night junior year (I didn’t go senior year, I learned my lesson) when our neighbor let me and my date use his Jaguar for transportation. It snowed that night, hard. I never got to test out the V-12 engine, had to drive slow all night. My date and I were the only sober kids in that car that night.
Got home after 2 a.m., mom was still up, sitting in the living room reading. I walked in and she said “OK, you’re home. I’m going to bed.” And that was it.

Hey—Nikki’s an ACCOUNTANT (not a very good one, but…)
When she was running for governator, AP story said:
On the campaign trail, state GOP gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley frequently cites her experience as the accountant for her family’s clothing store, saying she oversaw its growth to a multimillion dollar operation, and the state needs such skills.
But records obtained by The Associated Press show the family company has been penalized three times since 2003 for not paying taxes. In each case, the taxes were at least 19 months past due.Two of the tax liens were for failing to pay corporate income taxes and one was for not turning over taxes withheld from employee checks. The company paid nearly $4,000 to remove them, with 43 percent covering penalties and interest. Credit records on the business show it frequently pays operating bills more than a month late, compared with an industry average of 10 days late.
Just the credentials you need to be UN Ambassador, am I right?
