Some Much-Needed Cuteness: Aimee Mann, “Goose Snow Cone”

Here’s a break from the horrific news out of Virginia, and Donald Trump’s equally horrific refusal to condemn the neo-Nazis responsible — a cute and touching video for a great song from Aimee Mann’s latest album.

From Aimee’s Facebook page regarding the video: “I wrote “Goose Snow Cone” when I was on tour in Ireland, on a cold and snowy day. I was feeling very homesick when I saw a picture on Instagram of a cat I know named Goose. Her fluffy white face was looking up at the camera in a very plaintive way, like a little snowball, and I started singing a little song about her that turned into a song about loneliness. I intended to change the lyrics but could never find a phrase to replace the one I started with. When it came time to make a video, I knew the original Goose had to be in it. Her owners are my friends Rob and Puloma who coincidentally produce and direct videos. One of my cats had recently gone through a long illness and I was thinking about that when I came up with the idea for the video, and I knew Puloma had to star in it, as she has a very lovely and expressive face. The vet in the video is my actual vet and he’s a great guy. It was not easy wrangling Goose but the magic of editing makes it all work!”

Then I went to work for Social Security in 1978 and I can assuredly tell you that these folks were just waiting for the signal to come out of the closet. The running helps but. Sigh. I’m icing my foot regularly, ibuprofen, etc. Turns out that having it hurt when you curl your toes is a sign that maybe you should pay attention to. Who knew, right?

(At least the half was last Saturday and I set another new PR.)

I was out chasing Pokemon this afternoon and didn’t hear the news until I came home and crashed in my chair. We all have our coping mechanisms, but I think sometimes the ones that get us out in the world and away from our homes are the best.

I have my days where I am better at it and my days where I am not but I figure overall I don’t want to turn into the outrage/despair-addicted Faux News equivalent so I see being able to tune it out occasionally as a useful skill.

The running helps but. Sigh. I’m icing my foot regularly, ibuprofen, etc. Turns out that having it hurt when you curl your toes is a sign that maybe you should pay attention to. Who knew, right?

(At least the half was last Saturday and I set another new PR.)

I distracted myself by signing up to volunteer at the Family Justice Center (women’s shelter/court advocates/job training etc.) Had to go to a two-day training session that was actually pretty inspiring. The caseworkers, counselors and court advocates all talked as well as others. Incredible group.

If I were younger, I’d jump in with both feet, but I really can’t right now, so I’m going to do some resume writing for the clients, some data entry from the court watch program and some planning for fundraising events.

SC has a terrible record on domestic abuse, and they closed the shelter in my county two years ago (smart bunch.) This group started in the neighboring county and just expanded to mine last year. No physical shelter yet, but they have an office and programs and ways to house people in danger.

Breaks my heart, but also lifts my heart to see so many people doing such wonderful work.

It’s just frustrating since it’s pretty much fine walking and I absolutely *could* run right now, it would just be a bad idea.

Sigh.

I am just going to be crankier than normal until I can get out again.

OT: as I pulled into the gym parking lot this afternoon “This American Life” came on. I used to love it, but just haven’t listened in a long time. But today they rebroadcast a celebration of a major contributor who died a while ago of cancer, David Rakoff. This wasn’t a part of the celebration, but recalled to me one of my favorite moments. Rakoff explains being sent to New Hampshire by Outdoor Magazine to cover a guy who has ascended Mt. Monadnock every day for over six years. But this was my favorite part where he talks about meeting his BnB hostess:

“At the connecting airline at the Boston airport, I sit, the only dark-haired person among the broad-faced butter-eaters, wondering if my outdoors journalist drag— flannel shirt, jeans, most hated boots of Satan’s workshop, down jacket— is fooling anybody. A brief flight and half a Xanax later, I land in New Hampshire, horrified to learn that the place where I’ll be staying is a bed and breakfast, not a hotel. My heart sinks. That means there is probably neither television nor phone in my room, and I have very little patience for what is generally labeled charming. In particular, country charm. I have an intense dislike of flowered wallpaper. Ditto jam of all sorts.

The former is in all-too-abundant evidence when I enter, and the latter, I’m sure, lies in ominous wait somewhere in the cheery kitchen. There is a knotty pine bar off the entrance hall with a settee with several embroidered pillows. “I’d rather be golfing.” “On the eighth day, God created golf.” “Golfers have sex in some humorous, golf-related manner.” Et cetera.

The proprietress is the kind of tall, stalwart woman of a certain age that used to be called “handsome.” She is approximately nine feet tall. Her eyes are blue, resolute. They can’t do diplomacy. Even North Korea says they cannot “sit down and talk” to anyone in this administration. Trump’s an outsider. His rhetorical Tweets and the press releases that come out have been observed by the Australians as well as various people in Western Europe that what’s coming out of Washington sounds remarkably similar to what comes out of North Korea. There is one difference: Trump has no experience running a government, where as Kim Jong Un has been groomed and trained to run a government since he was born.

We extended the threats and rhetoric to Venezuela yesterday. Now there’s an overt call for a civil war. Does anyone remember how that came out last time that was tried?

A woman with a broken ankle I talked to in Poland 2 years ago told me that she saw the way the country was polarizing along several different lines was a good set-up for a civil war. This time, it won’t be one that’s based on geography, but more like partisan gangs spewing violence to the other partisans, and anyone who has not taken a side is fair-game for all sides. That said, if he was only in the Army for four months, that would mean he either washed out (wasn’t physically or mentally able to handle life in the military), or he did something that got him an administrative discharge (broke civil law or violated the UCMJ somehow).

I would note a large portion of those former military personnel who do things like terroristic acts did not serve long terms (or complete terms) in the military.

Washed out in basic training. Takes a bit of time to process the paperwork. My guess is he was “unable to adjust” to military discpline.

I think the van got pushed there. The perps car rear ended another car, which you can see behind the van in the later shot down the street.

Since he was apprehended some distance away, I’m thinking he pushed the other cars out of the way and tried to take off.
