Here’s an outstanding live performance of one of Peter Gabriel’s masterpieces, from the album “Security.”

Taken from the Secret World Live concert film, which captures Peter Gabriel’s extraordinary 1993 live show – conceived by Peter and Robert Lepage – it was filmed across two nights (16 & 17 November) at the Palasport Nuovo in Modena, Italy.

We had some dear, dear friends who lived in the mountains outside of Los Angeles, starting when it was really wild out there. Ed used to ride out with the rangers, and brought home a bobcat kitten. They raised it to full grown, and he really liked that cat. His wife, however, was not so fond of it, and said that the cat knew it. It would go sit on her potted plants and “squish them into jelly” while looking her straight in the eye. She gave Ed an ultimatum, either the cat goes, or I do. Her voice used to rise dramatically when she told the story. “He THOUGHT about it!!!”

Elon Musk Named ‘Moon Base Alpha’ After Grooviest Sci-Fi Show Ever

SpaceX founder Elon Musk announced Friday that his space exploration plans now include not just Mars but also the moon. Speaking at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia, Musk revealed the company’s planned next-generation rocket will make it possible to build a moon base — and the name he picked is just his latest homage to beloved science fiction, in this case, the British cult classic Space: 1999.

While you weren’t looking: 5 things the Trump Cabinet did this week that didn’t involve the tax code

A group of veterans with disabilities is suing the Department of Transportation for a Trump administration decision to roll back key air travel protections designed to help people with disabilities.

The group Democracy Forward is leading the suit on behalf of Paralyzed Veterans of America, challenging the Trump administration’s decision to undo an Obama-era rule that forced domestic airlines to report data on lost and damaged wheelchairs and scooters, according to a press release.

The suit alleges that the Department of Transportation made their decision without providing an opportunity for the public to weigh in and comment in violation of the Administrative Procedure Act.

“All I know is this. I never want another “outsider@ again because people are unhappy with Washington. He was unqualified professionally as well morally and ethically.”

The incompetence and callousness we’re witnessing in Trump, his cabinet and staff members, and GOP politicians is the result of decades’ of right-wing lies and a concerted effort to make a certain segment of our population hate their own government. When I think of Trump, I think of the phrase, “Release the kraken!” The GOPers released their own krakens, lost control of them, gained control of all three branches of government and are still unable to govern competently. They lied to, and brainwashed, millions of Americans with false promises and fake displays of strength and have failed to deliver. Bannon, Spencer, Anglin, and others are stirring them up, making them angrier than they were before, and now the extraordinary purging has begun. GOPers most definitely built this. They own this lock, stock, and barrel, and the election of Moore in Alabama, and the calls for McConnell’s head are only the first steps in their extraordinary purging movement. I expect more, not less right-wing madness.

This neuroscientist knows what your dog is thinking (it’s sweet)

From that, we conclude that the vast majority of dogs love us at least as much as food.

Another thing that we’ve learned by showing pictures of objects and people to the dogs is that they have dedicated parts of their brain for processing faces. So dogs are in many ways wired to process faces.

This means that dogs aren’t just learning from being around us that human faces are important — they are born to look at faces. This wasn’t known before.

ALL ABOUT DOGS: When choosing an animal, keep their DNA in mind

Hounds and terriers were bred to work independently of man and to follow their owns instincts and drive. Hounds use their noses to locate everything from foxes to wild pigs to raccoons. They also use their vision and speed for pursuit. Terriers automatically want to “go to ground,” and want to use their powerful little claws to “root out vermin and rodents.” Terriers and hounds have a high prey drive, too, and are typically easily distracted, so high value treat rewards (used properly) can be used to mold the behaviors you want.

The best healthcare news is Price being fired. There is some reason to hope his successor won’t continue to actively sabotage Obamacare, though I’ll believe it when I see it.

The GOP Tax reform plan is already in trouble due to the large number of Republicans representing upper middle class people in high tax states fighting against elimination of the state and local tax deduction. The package can’t pass without their votes, but dropping that provision opens a gaping hole in the overall plan. Nobody knew reforming taxes could be this hard!

Air travel wasn’t as common back then as it is today - and it was also a good deal more expensive, relatively speaking, for the average Joe or Jane.

Then when prices went down, the airlines realized they could make more money by packing us in like sardines…..more butts in seats = more $$$.

I will miss the Okeanos live streams. Always something interesting.

Yesterday’s dive, with the rediscovery of the Baltimore, was, I believe, the last dive in the Pacific. NOAA started 3 years ago a series of cruises in the Pacific, looking at surveying US marine monuments, and other interesting locations.

Now that is done, and the ship will sail to the Atlantic.

I believe the next program is marine archeology in the Atlantic. Don’t know when they will start the live streams again, but it will probably be in November.

Morning!

I was just checking my email and saw this on the att. net home page. I caught the headline and thought this should be fun. And then I read it and was all WTF? So, I scrolled back to the top to see where this lump came from. Fox news. Then it made sense, Well, not the article, but the way it was written.

I think I broke my head reading this little gem.

Tom Price Was Vital To Replacing ObamaCare: Karl Rove

U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price resigned on Friday after his use of private charter planes for government business came to light.

But, Price’s resignation may only hurt the Republicans efforts of repealing and replacing ObamaCare, former George W. Bush senior advisor Karl Rove said.

“He’s really vital to the issue of repealing and replacing ObamaCare because he’s been thinking about this for a long time. He’s a true reformer on health care that the Republicans need, his voice and his brain as an intellect, his capacity to persuade,” he told FOX Business’ Liz MacDonald on “Risk & Reward.”

Price’s charter flight usage reportedly cost taxpayers about $60,000. Hours before he resigned, President Trump responded to Price’s use of private charter flights saying, “I’m not happy.”

“I think he was right to resign, and the president was right to receive his resignation,” Rove said. “People in places of public responsibility like that have a special responsibility to not misspend the tax payer’s dollars.”

I’ve lived through a couple of floods where we lost power from periods of 3 days to 7days. When your house is 100% powered by electricity, the local shops are flooded and there are no open roads to get anywhere - even when your house is above flood level (as ours was/is) - the one thing that keeps you going is the thought that the power will be reconnected in the not too distant future.

We had to wait a week - some folks waited 2 weeks - in Puerto Rico the people had to wait this long for trump to start to make plans as to what to do. The effect on morale is devastating & this mornings tweet storm is the most disgusting response to a humanitarian problem that has ever been given to any community anywhere in this situation.

Air travel wasn’t as common back then as it is today - and it was also a good deal more expensive, relatively speaking, for the average Joe or Jane.

Then when prices went down, the airlines realized they could make more money by packing us in like sardines…..more butts in seats = more $$$.

Deregulation. As always quality decreases in proportion to the deregulated industries profits increasing. Now you have to pay for, at minimum, biz class to be treated like a human otherwise even animals get better service.

Between that and the pretense of security provided by the TSA Security Theater, well, I don’t fly anymore.

re: #199 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

Morning Lizardim from the beautiful, cool, clear wild north country. I haven’t talked much about the conditions here in a while - life has been so crazy and stressful, often just getting here to LGF is a struggle. Fall is in full swing; the leaves are falling, the weather is cooling, the roads are disintegrating. I’m getting really psyched for my trip to India in November, getting to meet the rest of my team members and explore a new country. How go things among the lizardfolk on this gorgeous fall morning?

A little cooler here on the island today, Fall is taking its time but is definitely moving in.

My wife and I are going to an event called ‘Pour the Core’ with a couple of friends today - all the local cider makers come out and let you sample their wares. Since I’m not big on cider, I’m the designated driver - which works out, since I’ve got a gig out in Queens tonight and need to not be cider-faced when I get there.

Also, Trump is a piece of crap. If I was face to face with him, I would spit in his bloated, arrogant face. And I have a feeling that the mayor of San Juan will have some choice words for him on Tuesday, and I hope she launches into him while the TV cameras are rolling.

Yeah, but if you stop and stay for a bit they’ve really done a lot. It’s pretty cool. Live outdoor music during the week, they’ve finally turned the confluence of the rivers into a spot where people actually can fish, and overall the food scene is getting better.

Yep. I thought it was a cat rattling my closet door.

He is, but I’m kind of glad he beat Luther Strange in the GOP primary, because he’s going to make it even harder for the GOP to pass its noxious legislation, and Jones may have a slightly better chance of beating Moore than Strange.

Well, most of the latest polls show Moore ahead of Jones by something like “only” a 50-44 margin, which I suppose is fairly good for a Democrat in Alabama: however, that’s (AFAICT) before any serious campaigning (i.e. media saturation) has begun. And it IS Alabama…..

Its been fascinating watching the dumpster fire that is the congressional GOP this year. They lost seats in both the House and the Senate in the election and their incredibly unpopular presidential nominee squeaked into the White House with 46% of the vote, and yet they have been pushing their priorities as though they won a wave election like the Democrats in 2008. And what priorities they have! First they wasted eight months trying to push through an incredibly unpopular plan to take healthcare coverage away from tens of millions of people in order to enact a massive tax cut for the rich. Now that that has failed, they have moved on to an incredibly unpopular plan to raise taxes on the middle class in order to enact massive tax cuts for the rich. When this effort predictably crashes and burns, they will have almost nothing to show for their efforts because they aren’t willing to bend an inch on pushing their extremist agenda of redistributing wealth to billionaires.

I have no illusions that Jones is anything other than a long shot. One can only hope that there is a sliver of white Alabama voters revolted enough by Moore to give Jones a chance, and a big turnout by African-American voters.

Last I checked, the Constitution never mentions Christianity, not even obliquely.

Those Radical Christianists like Moore get around all that with their bullshit about God gave us the U.S. Constitution through his gifts like the Ten Commandments and the Bible.

These Roy Moore types are what we all have been saying for some time.

They are Radical Christian Fundamentalists and they are the equivalent of the Taliban/ISIS/Al Qaeda.

And they have an enabler in the White House and many radical members have infiltrated our government.

It is not the threats from the outside that are existential threats to this country. It is these people that will destroy our Constitution. They are doing it right now and they are doing it just as Barack Obama said.

“They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

That was in 2008 during the primary run against Clinton.

Could he have been any more prescient?

And look at the crap he took and how they twisted this into hatred for Obama and liberals/progressive which just happens to be ALL the people they fear. People of color, LBGT, artists, thinkers, atheists/agnostics, us.

And they wave their flag and sing their anthems blind to what they are doing.

Depraved indifference.

That’s a term of art that kept creeping back into view over the past few hours. Depraved indifference to suffering. Depraved indifference to the plight of others. Depraved indifference to the job at hand.

Trump’s entire worldview is depraved indifference to all those around him. He thinks only of himself, and attacks others.

Trump’s entire relationship with reality is strained and he still thinks he’s doing a great job even as the facts on the ground show otherwise.

Trump thinks that attacking Trump’s response is an attack on the first responders. Trump doesn’t get that his failures have real world consequences.

Last I checked, the Constitution never mentions Christianity, not even obliquely.

No it doesn’t.

However, the Treaty of Tripoli does, quite specifically.

As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion,-as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen,-and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

This treaty was signed in 1796, ratified unanimously by the Senate — at a time when half the Senate was people who’d signed the Declaration of Independence and helped write the Constitution.

Trump’s racist rants against PR show prepare us for how he will respond to the next ebola outbreak in west Africa.

I have no doubt especially when he has a racist pig like Miller in his ear. And he is a racist himself.

There was a hell of a storm here last night. I slept through it. (I slept through an earthquake that took down a hospital.) Streets came unpaved, heavy equipment is still clearing some intersections. One fatality, possibly two more. They’re still searching the main former arroyo (temporary river) through town. Big hail, lots of rain.

So I’m mailing my rent check, and I have a stamp to use with a fishy on it (from the Pets collection). I’m 2 blocks from the now-filled arroyo.

Targetpractice  Sep 30, 2017 • 11:28:16am

It really shouldn’t surprise anyone that the moment Trump started receiving criticism from the people he’s dragged his ass on helping, he resorted to political attacks and racism. But the press will no doubt waste a lot of ink and airtime suggesting that there’s something deeper here than a old racist bigot with an ego that has its own gravitational pull attacking others for his own inadequacies.

Of course, the next step will be insisting that the damage from a Cat 5 hurricane wouldn’t have been as terrible if PR was better built, which is all due to their debt. If they’d been a fiscally responsible and conservative nation, they’d have the construction and infrastructure to weather the storm without major issues. I mean look at how well Houston…er, bad example.

Speaking of which:

Trump has scheduled a trip to the American territory on Tuesday and a White House official took a shot at Cruz, implying she’s too busy being a television celebrity to meet with the president.

According to ABC, an unnamed White House spokesperson said they were “not sure,” if Cruz would show up for what would inevitably be a photo-op with Trump.

“She has been invited to FEMA command center several times to see operations and be part of efforts but so far has refused to come, maybe too busy doing TV?” the spokesperson said.

Cruz has notably been seen working the streets of San Juan helping survivors of the devastating disaster and organizing relief efforts in the absence of adequate federal help from the Trump administration.

They’re gonna need to dig a new subbasement of Hell for these cockwits.

So…I went to the movies to get away from the politics. I went to see “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”, and it was amazing…except, it has some semi-political content that is kind of horrifying given the past few days.

POTUS is willing to let everyone who has recently used illegal drugs die due to an engineered virus that the villain created to try to blackmail the world into legalizing drugs. Keeping victims of the virus in small areas where he can maintain a media blackout…

It also had Halle Berry as a slightly nerdy agent. And Sir Elton John as an action hero…yes, really.

I’m reminded of the time immediately after Katrina, when many evacuees starting making their way back to NOLA, only to find entire neighborhoods either still under water or cordoned off by National Guardsmen.

Yet what were the wingnuts doing? Showing pictures of devastated neighborhoods and implying that black New Orleans would rather sit around in a FEMA trailer waiting for a government check than rush back to rebuild their homes.

Shocker, my prediction from last month is coming true:

According to three sources, Politico reported Secretary Kelly, “called senior White House officials and demanded a meeting with Trump to deliver something of an ultimatum: If Kushner was going to freelance on DHS issues, the president would have to choose between his son-in-law and the four-star general serving in his Cabinet.”

Kelly is reported seeking “a formal organizational chart on top of Trump’s formerly chaotic West Wing” that has continued to be plagued by scandals and failure since the former Marine General took over as Chief of Staff.

Kelly might as well start cleaning out his desk, because there’s no way that Donny is going to throw Ivanka out of the White House and she’ll sooner slit Kelly’s throat and watch him bleed out than abandon her meal ticket.
