This latest CNN poll is a doozy…

As you may know, Republicans control both houses of Congress and the White House. Do you have more confidence in President Trump to deal with the major issues facing the country today, or more confidence in the Republicans in Congress to deal with those issues?

Trump: 30
Congressional Republicans: 47
Neither (vol): 17

Democrats are leading the generic ballot 51-37, which is where they were in 2006.

Those featureless gray concrete slabs look strangely familiar. Soviet architecture circa 1960s?

If, and it’s still a big if, this sick wall is ever built, I hope I’m still alive to see the day it’s torn down, with any luck from both sides but from either side alone is fine too. It would be nice, though, if someone thinks to save a few slabs with graffiti on them, such as “Pinche Gringo Culo Trump.” Again, I don’t really care which side the graffiti come from.

If you don’t have the personnel available, if you don’t get the resources mobilized, and then you don’t get that communicated up the chain, things will quickly go sideways.

They did. It didn’t take much.

Trump didn’t mobilize sufficient numbers fast enough. The Navy wasn’t mobilized fast enough, and those consequences meant that Puerto Ricans are suffering for it.

Yes, but…Trump is an important figure in this equation, but he doesn’t make the contingency plans, he just approves them. Is Trump’s ignorance enough for this level of incompetence? With Katrina, it was Bush, yes, but it was definitely Brownie and local govt. Obama “succeeded” because of lessons FEMA learned during Katrina, not because he was a gifted emergency management coordinator. Like Allegro said, how the hell does a floating hospital ship not have a plan in place to get patients to it? I sat in Afghanistan with specialists who could arrange loads for helicopter pickup, the logistical problems aren’t new. Bad start, yes, bad 3 weeks later?

As California burns, here’s what you need to know about fire insurance

Most homeowners insurance policies cover fire damage. But heads-up: That’s not the whole story.

If you live in a high-risk area, such as near a canyon, you may need to pay more for additional coverage. And if, God forbid, a fire has devastated whole communities, such as what we’re seeing now in Northern California, your home-replacement dollars could be stretched thin as costs soar for everything from materials to labor.

“All those commercials about insurance companies offering peace of mind when things like this happen — those are just ads,” said Amy Bach, executive director of United Policyholders, a San Francisco-based advocacy group.

“In reality, insurance policies are written by teams of lawyers, and it can be rough for homeowners,” she said.

Most homeowners insurance covers both your home and all property within. More than 90% of homeowners buy coverage, according to recent estimates, and as many as 40% of renters purchase insurance for their belongings.

Hawaii was a territory for about 60 years. Then in the 1950s there was widespread support for statehood. There has never really been widespread support for statehood in Puerto Rico. Usually the population splits evenly between statehood, independence, and the current status. I suspect that will change now, but it is incredibly unclear how the politics in Washington will play out if there is a true consensus for either statehood or independence.

The Puerto Rican independence movement in the 1950’s were seriously terrorists. (FALN). The bombings, the hijackings. That time they shot up the floor of Congress (which is why you can’t bring automatic weapons into the gallery anymore). That time they tried to assassinate President Truman, and one of his bodyguards died shielding him.

Defense.GOV: DoD Announces Policies Affecting Foreign Nationals Entering Military

The changes recognize that “while the department recognizes the value of expedited U.S. citizenship achieved through military service, it is in the national interest to ensure all current and prospective service members complete security and suitability screening prior to naturalization,” Miller said.

One policy change is to the initial security and suitability screening for green card holders. “Effective immediately, all green card holders must complete a background investigation and receive a favorable military security suitability determination prior to entering any component of the armed forces,” Miller said in an interview.

Previously, green card holders could ship to basic military training as long as background investigations were initiated. Green card holders go through the same check as American citizens.

The change will mean that green card holders entering the military may be in the delayed entry or training program longer than in the past, due to a backlog for security clearances at the Office of Personnel Management.

The clearance procedure could take up to a year.

I never thought I’d feel that way about anyone - but with trump - I’d walk right on by - probably cross to the other side of the street.

I think it’s been quoted before, but I read somewhere that the hardest decision any New Yorker would have to make was to go to a bar, drink till their bladder was throbbing full, then go into the bathroom to find Donald Trump on fire….

If they don’t condemn that statement from Trump (or his doubling-down today claiming previous presidents haven’t contacted grieving family members before), I don’t ever want to hear a conservative politician or voter claim they “support the troops or veterans.”

As for his putting General Kelly on the spot over his son’s death: General Kelly was at the Gold Star Family dinner that year hosted by the White House, sitting next to Michelle Obama. There is news and video of that event.

The Goldstarfamilies hastag on Twitter is exploding in outrage.

just think - less than a year ago we would have been saying “well, now he’s really gone too far - how could the american people possibly elect donald trump president of the united states?”

just where the hell is this all going to end?

Judging by the election results and my own feelings as a longtime New York City resident, for nine out of ten of us there is no difficulty in this decision unless the burning T is actually in the latrine.

Even the presidents whose policies I sharply disagreed with, I would have been honoured (in or out of the Navy) if I had the opportunity to meet them.

If I was called by the White House today, I could only answer “no, you [censored for sensitive eyes].”

How dare he. How dare the GOP enable this.

I just got home from a trip, and noticed that people are following Alyssa Mastromonaco on Twitter. If you haven’t read her book about working for Obama, you should! It is a hoot, and has plenty of anecdotes about the Obama family, but it also shows just how much hard work is involved when everybody in the White House is doing their job as they should!

Rude Pundit. This is so obvious, I’m surprised that no one has made the point before this.

It’s an old story when it comes to urban real estate. The owner of a building with a bunch of rent-stabilized apartments wants to jack up the cost of the places to meet what has become an exploding market or he wants them gone so he can wreck the place because the real estate parcel is that valuable. But if an elderly couple who has lived there for decades doesn’t want to move out or if a family couldn’t find anything nearby that was close to the low rent they get to pay by law, what’s a landlord to do? It’s not a perfect place to live; still, it’s where a lot of people are comfortable and happy.

Now, you can start hitting them with harassing lawsuits and threats to evict them for minor or outright made-up lease violations. But if that doesn’t work? Then you gotta raise your game. You refuse to make repairs so that leaks and other things get out of control unless the tenants repair them. Hey, you didn’t cause that mold to grow up the walls. You do construction in a way that causes noise and dust and shaking walls and floors. You don’t do anything to get rid of any bugs or vermin. If you get really desperate, you can open up part of the building to the homeless, allowing them to stay there for free.

You’re not kicking them out. You’re just making it miserable for them to be there so that they want to get out. You’re doing it for the sake of hurting them, and you don’t care what happens, even if it costs you money to do it.

We don’t really have to imagine the above scenario because that’s exactly what Donald Trump did when he was a slumlord in the 1980s at the 100 Central Park South building he had just bought in 1981. Yeah, he wanted to tear it down to build another big, dumb tower, but the place was full with tenants who were quite happy to pay far below-market for their homes. And Trump knew the apartments were occupied, but he wanted them gone. So he made life hell for them.

Trump’s approach to the Affordable Care Act is essentially the same thing. He tried to just get rid of it, but the repeal effort failed, so now he’s dropping a family of rats into it.

Can someone give me some insight as to *why* FEMA is responding so poorly in this situation? I know that the fish rots from the head and all, but the career civil servants are obviously not performing in their first rodeo (searching for more metaphors to mix). Seriously, Trump isn’t good at this management thing, but the FEMA director was (post-Houston) being lauded as very competent. What the ever loving hell happened?

Brown people.

FEMA can do nothing unless they get an order from the President first. They can only do what they are allowed to do.

Someone on NPR was trying to make the excuse this afternoon that FEMA’s job is not emergency management and that’s what the poor response in Puerto Rico was about.

To be honest, he very well might have.

A white military widow matters every bit as much as a black one to him. He doesn’t give a fuck about either of them.

And it apparently wasn’t really a “conversation”, not when that Army sergeant, afraid for his job and not wanting to be posted to Nome, Alaska no doubt, kept her from replying back to Trump when he said what he said.

The Army Sergeant wouldn’t let rep Wilson take the phone and talk to the president. Doesn’t say he stopped Mrs. Johnson from replying.
