Sam was an interesting guy. Nearly got lynched when he said he wasn’t for secession. Only two counties voted against: Travis (Yo!), and Gillespie (county seat Fredricksburg) where the population still remembered the German civil wars and wanted nothing to do with it or with slavery. Many died at the hand of Confederates who, such as the Nieces Massacre, thought of them as foreigners.

I think that is part of why so many Bernie fans are convinced that he’s more popular than he was. What you see on social media isn’t always reality. Warhammer Time
A Perpetual was an individual who was a member of a mutant branch of the human species who possessed seemingly superhuman abilities. Some were born with their abilities naturally, while others received them through artificial genetic intervention using advanced technology. However, every Perpetual was known to be effectively immortal, never aging and capable of ultimately healing almost any injury as a result of their extraordinarily rapid and efficient cellular regeneration. It is this capability that is responsible for their name. Perpetuals have been known to survive dismemberment, suffocation, decapitation and even directed energy assaults, their bodies always regenerating and even bringing them back to life after clinical death.

There were a lot of people like that in the South. I was reading a book by/about one of them today: “Parson” Brownlow of eastern Tennessee. He was a Methodist preacher and editor of the principal Unionist newspaper in his part of the state, a region that itself was heavily Unionist. He was a no-holds-barred writer such as Mark Twain immortalized in the story “Journalism in Tennessee.” He would probably have been a success on the Web today.
His position was simple: He supported slavery and abhorred northern abolitionists, but he loved the Union and hated secessionists even more. If there was a choice between slavery and the Union, he would choose the Union. He was imprisoned for treason by the newly seceded state and sentenced to hang, but this was eventually commuted to exile to the North. He returned when Federal forces took Knoxville, and after the war served a term as governor of Tennessee.
The point of all this? Simply that the South, and in 1861 the nation, would have been better off with more men like Sam Houston and Pastor Brownlow, even if they did believe in slavery, because they would put their country before their prejudices. God knows this is a rare enough quality even, or especially, today.

The Oroville Dam in California (the dam where the spillway failed when the dam overfilled due to rain) was supposed to have its new spillway work completed. It’s not, and the rainy season is beginning.
Currently the lake behind the dam is two hundred feet below the top of the dam. There is concern if the rainy season is particularly wet, the dam will overflow again.
The article at Daily Kos goes into great detail about the repair work that happened this summer, with photographs as it progressed. It includes links to various state Websites for more information.
The Kos article also notes that the dam repairs are already way over budget.

What a lovely night for the City of Houston, which surely needs one. It can only be hoped that the US Congress gives Texas, and Florida, and Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands, what they need to make US citizens safe and secure in their homes.
I find it significant that 75% of the people killed in the attack in NYC were foreign tourists or residents- one Belgian and five Argentines. We need to understand that the security of the world is directly related to the security of this country. These senseless attacks do not respect borders, as mourning families in Belgium and Argentina will be the first to tell you tonight. We all have to work together to end this evil.
MAGA may sound good, bit it is a piss poor policy for dealing with these random attacks. I fear that The Man In The White House is incapable of grasping this, as he seems totally unable to understand the fact that internal gun attacks by US citizens are far and away more of a clear and present danger to the US than International Terrorism, whatever its source.
Then again, I am sure that right now, his mind, such as it is, sees this as a gnat, an annoyance, to what could be the destruction of his business empire, and his reputation, which is foremost in his mind. He’d sell his children to save it, and he just yet might do it.
What a sad, lonely little man, powerless in the hell that he has created for himself. I want him to suffer for his sins.

The North understandably did not want the 3/5ths rule to be extended into the new territories and states, because it had already given the slaveholding states more representation in the House than they would have gotten otherwise. Allowing the new areas to be slaveholding states would have meant slavery would be a near-permanent fixture in the USA — or at least a longer lasting fixture.

The settlers in the territories who brought their slaves with them also saw their property rights as having precedence over any state laws concerning slavery, which would have resulted in the de facto expansion of slavery everywhere they settled.

More to the point, northern factory workers and miners and farmhands knew they couldn’t get jobs to earn a decent living in any place where slaves would be doing that kind of work; and factory owners and mill owners and so on knew they couldn’t compete with companies that didn’t have to pay for labor.

Interestingly, the book I’m reading now argues that slaveowners were more likely to use slaves in jobs that had a high rate of return, namely, growing cotton, and to a lesser extent, growing tobacco and sugar cane. When cotton prices fell, which they did in the 1820s, slaveowners moved their slaves to textile work and other factory jobs, but once cotton prices rose, it was back to the fields for them.
So, while the northern factory workers may have feared unfair labor competition, chances are there wouldn’t be as much competition as they thought. OTOH, in areas where cotton could not be easily grown, owners might well have used slave labor in the factories.
The book is What Hath God Wrought? amazon.com It covers the years 1815-1848 and it’s a pretty good read.
Did you all catch this story, about the two Hawaiian women who tried to sail from Oahu to Tahiti, and ended up off the coast of Japan?
Their story was they got caught in a bad storm, lost comms, lost their mast, water swamped their engine, and they were unable to signal for help. Sailing with their two dogs, they lived off their ample supplies and attempted to sail to Tahiti. Instead, they were found drifting off the coast of Japan and rescued by the US Navy.
Well, it turns out their story has several holes in it. There was no storm. Their emergency beacon was still operational. Their tales of being threatened by tiger sharks are questionable. Neither of them had any appreciable sailing experience, and the older of the two, Jennifer Appel, had once run a previous boat aground.
Fox News had a story about it, but instead here’s a report from Hawai’i. Beware of autoplaying video.

Just like we cannot compete with countries where safety and environmental costs are next to nothing for lack of laws or enforcement thereof.
I have no problem with competing based on wages; that should be our incentive to work smarter and increase efficiency. In fact, American workers are world leaders in productivity and efficiency.
But if we let imports undercut us on health, safety and environment, then we are not only shooting ourselves in the foot, but we are offering those countries no reason to clean up their act.

Hillary Clinton had control of the party’s finances since August 2015.
From the Politico article:
I had to keep my promise to Bernie. I was in agony as I dialed him. Keeping this secret was against everything that I stood for, all that I valued as a woman and as a public servant.
“Hello, senator. I’ve completed my review of the DNC and I did find the cancer,” I said. “But I will not kill the patient.”
I discussed the fundraising agreement that each of the candidates had signed. Bernie was familiar with it, but he and his staff ignored it. They had their own way of raising money through small donations. I described how Hillary’s campaign had taken it another step.
I told Bernie I had found Hillary’s Joint Fundraising Agreement. I explained that the cancer was that she had exerted this control of the party long before she became its nominee. Had I known this, I never would have accepted the interim chair position, but here we were with only weeks before the election.
Bernie took this stoically. He did not yell or express outrage.

re: #81 The Vicious Babushka
From the article:
Instead of X-rays, the team used muons, the heavy cousins of electrons that form when cosmic rays from outer space collide with particles in Earth’s atmosphere. The fallout from the collisions creates a constant bombardment of harmless particles that can penetrate deep into the planet. As the muons pass through matter they lose energy and decay, so if the team detected a small amount of muons, that means they were passing through matter. But if they detected more muons, it suggests the particles were passing through empty space or less dense material.

Kids got me a small clay pizza oven for b’day. I’ve hacked the hell out of it with an aramid shroud, chimney stack, and thickened floor. It can get to 700 degrees or so, which is about enough for a decent pie.

A neighborhood pizzeria in Italy will put just about anything you ask for on pizza. Artichoke and eggplant are both favorites. They’ll put ham and pineapple on pizza hawaiia, mostly ordered by tourists. Daughter1 worked in one as a waitress/dishwasher/translator.

You know what annoys me is how Sanders still refuses to actually be a Democrat. I mean if the DNC were so rigged, Obama never beats HRC. Sanders has limited but large enough appeal that he can be competitive. It was also telling when states that have caucuses held primaries unofficially Bernie lost those.

Which is why the Berners in the DNC ranks are trying to swing things over to caucuses, because they are (unironically) aping the GOP in trying to drive down participation in order to skew things in their favor.

The plan plays with the phase ins to shield the true intent. It’s still a huge giveaway to millionaires as it gets rid of the estate tax. It also eliminates the student loan interest deduction and medical expense deduction (which will hurt even more as GOP fucking around with health care costs means that those medical bills will pile up even further, and you’ll get no tax relief from those either).
But corporations get a huge break as the rate drops from 35% to 20%. Still have to see what happens with pass throughs and the tax brackets are still not identified.
In other words, this is the tax version of Trumpcare vaporware/malware.

Congrats to Houston though. Being a Giants “fan” I am supposed to be laughing at the Dodgers pain but baseball has never really sparked my emotions enough to relish in other people’s agony.
We suffered enough pain this past season with what was perhaps that worst team the Giants have had since they moved to SF and since I started following them in 1963. Besides, they’re a recent 3-time series winner and we forget that they hadn’t been in the series since losing to Oakland in 1989. As much as I enjoy the rivalry between the Dodgers and Giants, I don’t relish in any team losing in the series. Afterall, they made it and we didn’t.

This crapulence also includes a 20% corporate tax rate (from 35%), and passthroughs get a 25% rate, which means Trump sees huge tax breaks from this (coupled with the estate tax repeal).

Even this crap sandwich isn’t likely to get through a GOP controlled Congress because it’s not sufficiently tilted to the rich. And it’s not sufficiently gutting federal revenues to destroy functioning government.

I also think this is a problem for a lot of us political junkies, those of us who spend a lot of time on the internet reading about politics. We might know more than the average person, but we get so involved that every little thing gets amplified and that makes us susceptible to manipulation.

Well, fuck. The kids (white ones, anyway) are NOT alright:
A new survey shows white millennials think a lot more like whites than millennials
More than 1,750 millennials responded to the poll conducted between Aug. 31 and Sept. 16. That means it was started two weeks after white supremacists, neo-Nazis and other assorted bigots unleashed terror on Charlottesville. And during that time, President Trump inflamed racial tensions and squandered the moral authority of his office by repeatedly declaring a moral equivalence between bigots and those protesting them.
…
“When asked to compare white nationalist groups with groups that comprise the BLM movement, as in Figure 8,” the survey notes, “white millennials again stand out as the only group where a majority, albeit a slim majority (51 percent), agrees that the two entities are not very different from one another.”
…
So, “a slim majority”of white millennials believes blacks protesting police-involved shootings of unarmed African Americans are not very different from white supremacists marching through a town chanting “Jews will not replace us” and the repugnant Nazi-era “blood and soil” while protesting the removal of a Confederate general’s statue.
So while all this is going on with Trump, the Sanders Bros have their new shiny object, Donna Brazile. I honestly don’t care. The Democratic Party infrastructure had every right to favor a longtime Democrat over someone who had no commitment to the party. Not to mention someone who quite honestly wouldn’t have made a good President or candidate.

This is a good read - Mueller indictments beg the questions: why Manafort? Why Papadopoulos? Why now?
Mueller knows the contents of all of the other documents he has subpoenaed so far. Mueller knows what was said in the interviews with other witnesses he has conducted. And he knows the answer to the biggest question of them all. He knows why he didn’t charge Michael Flynn.
There are only two reasons Mueller didn’t charge Michael Flynn on Monday. The first is that he hasn’t finished with his investigation and he’s going to charge him at some point in the future. The second is, like he did with Papadopoulos, he has already arrested Flynn, charged him and made a plea deal. It’s known that Flynn failed to register as a lobbyist for foreign powers, a charge that Mueller has already brought against Manafort and Gates. It’s known that at the time Sally Yates reported him to the White House for lying to the Vice President about his contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, Flynn lied to the FBI, a charge Mueller has already brought against Papadopoulos.
Michael Flynn spent more time with candidate Trump last year than anyone. Michael Flynn was the cut-out Trump used to Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Michael Flynn was in the meeting at Trump Tower between Jared Kushner, Kislyak, and Sergey Gorkov, the head Vnesheconombank, the Russian state bank currently under U.S. sanctions. Michael Flynn knows everything there is to know about Trump and the Russians.
I think Special Counsel Mueller already knows what Michael Flynn knows. When it comes to Trump and the Russians, Robert Mueller knows what happened.
Lots more building up to my snip.

I think that’s a distinct possibility. Papadopolous was arrested quite some time ago, earlier this year, and we just now found about it. With a big fish like Flynn, it’s likely something like that would be “need to know” and very hush-hush. Mueller’s playing his cards close to his chest.
re: #189 makeitstop
This is a good read - Mueller indictments beg the questions: why Manafort? Why Papadopoulos? Why now?
Lots more building up to my snip.
I think that sounds right. And Flynn going state witness would be huge.

Both Flynn and his kid were really chatty on Twitter for a long time, then went completely dark. Either they have a lawyer who gave them the right advice, or Mueller told them to STFU and they listened hard.
A woman who sparked a bridesmaids brawl after crashing a wedding in Florida says she’s sorry for showing up as an uninvited guest and that she “never intended for it to have gotten so out of control.”Shelby McDowell, 20, of St. Augustine, said she and Darby Johns had been in a relationship for nearly two years when he told her he was going to a wedding in Palm Coast by himself. That prompted a suspicious McDowell to get a disguise and sneak into the wedding, ultimately leading to a brawl among bridesmaids at the ceremony and her arrest on battery charges on Oct. 21.

Well, things just got worse for Carles Puigdemont, ex-President of Catalonia.
Spain’s state prosecutor has asked a judge to issue a European arrest warrant for the deposed Catalan president Carles Puigdemont and four of his former regional ministers after they failed to return from Belgium to testify in court.
Puigdemont, who is in Brussels, had been summoned to attend Spain’s national court to give evidence on Thursday and Friday.
In a written request to Judge Carmen Lamela of the national court, prosecutors said that Puigdemont and the others were aware that they had been ordered to testify, but had chosen not to attend.
“Repeated attempts to deliver the summons at home and repeated phone calls have been ignored,” they said. “For his part, Carles Puigdemont has publicly stated his intention not to appear and has requested … to make a statement via videoconference, without giving any information about his current whereabouts.”
Consequently, they added, they were requesting Puigdemont be found and arrested.

I’m guessing you mean this?
Sam Clovis, President Donald Trump’s nominee to be the Department of Agriculture’s chief scientist, withdrew himself from consideration Thursday, the White House announced.
“We respect Mr. Clovis’ decision to withdraw his nomination,” White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement to pool reporters.
Sources told CNN earlier Thursday that Clovis’ nomination was imperiled over his connections to the ongoing Russia probe. The development is the latest sign that Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into the Trump campaign and Russian collusion is impacting the day-to-day of Trump’s administration, despite top White House aides — including Trump himself — claiming that the indictments of former top Trump campaign advisers Paul Manafort and Rick Gates had nothing to do with the administration or the campaign.

It’s alleged that Mercer played a role in Brexit.
A US hedge-fund billionaire who helped finance Donald Trump’s campaign to become US president reportedly played a key role in the campaign for Britain to leave the EU.
Robert Mercer, co-owner of right-wing news organisation Breitbart, allegedly directed his data-analytics firm Cambridge Analytica to provide expert advice to the Leave campaign.
Mr Mercer, whose firm was paid £4.8m by the Trump campaign to persuade swing voters, offered his firm’s help to Ukip leader Nigel Farage for free, leave.eu communications director Andy Wigmore told The Observer.
“They were happy to help. Because Nigel is a good friend of the Mercers,” Mr Wigmore said.
“What they were trying to do in the US and what we were trying to do had massive parallels. We shared a lot of information.”
The firm is said to have advised leave.eu by harvesting data from people’s Facebook profiles to decide how to target them with individualised advertisements.
However, the electoral commission was not informed of Mr Mercer’s work. All services worth more than £7,500 must be declared.
leave.eu declined to tell the paper why it had not declared the donation of services.
Cambridge Analytica is the Mercer entity that I think has the most dirt associated with it, here and across the pond.

So now Brazille is someone they trust after going apeshit over her appointment as temporary DNC head? Anyhow. Here’s what I think and it’s simple. I think the DNC had good reason to favor Clinton over Sanders. Sanders until this past year had never campaigned for any Democrats. Meanwhile Clinton and Obama too are people I can remember campaigning for other Democrats. Furthermore, the Sanders campaign had their own shadiness going on. And most importantly, we need to get over the 2016 primaries already. We also need to see that a 76 year old white guy from Vermont isn’t our party or movement’s future especially one that has shown himself to be let’s be honest racially insensitive and insensitive to issues important to women. Yes, he’s pro choice but at the same time, he dismisses the issue’s importance.

They really want to do anything to distract that Trump is free falling don’t tehy?
The classic Hollywood epic Gone With the Wind aroused a powerful surge of admiration and romanticism in audiences when it was first released in 1939. But it sent one of its biggest enthusiasts, Nazi minister of propaganda Joseph Goebbels, into a jealous rage. The German version of the picture (Vom Winde verweht) was reportedly one of Adolf Hitler’s favorite films, but, for Goebbels, it was a reminder of how far from beguiling the budding Nazi film industry was by comparison. “Goebbels,” as Life magazine reported in 1941, “would not even allow party officials to see it for fear that they might contrast it too unfavorably with the trashy but expensive films now being produced in Germany.”
But Gone With the Wind was not the only thing the Nazi elite admired when it came to the American South. According to historians Johnpeter Horst Grill and Robert L. Jenkins, “the American South, with its long-established system of white supremacy, was a source of interest to the Nazis as they, too, sought to work out their own system of Aryan supremacy.”
For the Nazis, the South represented a sociopolitical structure that had successfully maintained the separation between the races for centuries. In the 1930s, Nazi publications, which were anti-black in addition to being anti-Semitic, praised the “southern way,” pointing out that many Americans were also working against “racial bastardization,” evident from, among other things, the 30 or so U.S. states that had legal restrictions on interracial marriage. Hitler himself greatly admired America’s “wholesome aversion for the Negroes and the colored races in general” and warned of German culture being “negrified.”

Speaking of Guantanamo, things have gotten weird there. Currently, the general in charge of the defense attorneys has been jailed for 21 days (presumably for contempt of court) for allowing three civilian defense attorneys to leave the case.
The judge in Gitmo also tried to force the civilian attorneys to go to Cuba on Monday and their response was basically, “Hell no, that’s a foreign country.”
Now a writ of habeas corpus has been filed on Bakers behalf by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers to spring the general. It was filed with Judge Royce Lamberth so we’ll see how that goes. This is a press release from the NACDL:

House tax bill will cap mortgage interest deduction, leave 401(k)s unchanged
The plan dramatically scales back the deduction for state and local taxes, limiting it in the future only to property taxes and capping the deduction at $10,000. Americans no longer would be able to deduct state and local income or sales taxes, which currently make up about two-thirds of the deduction.
Republicans embrace tax cuts and ruinous debt
The plan would also repeal the estate tax, which affects only the richest Americans, in six years. The estate tax has long been a target of conservatives.
The $10K deduction cap affects most Chicagoland homeowners. Seriously $1K a month tax on a house is not unusual.
I haven’t been on the computer in a week. I have 1K emails to sift thru and purge.
I only know the news people told me. I don’t have a clue and you know what?

No, that was Martin Bormann that was hiding all those years in Argentina.
If you only watch Fox, you’d think that the FBI is going to arrest Hillary and send her to jail for the Russia Scandal.
The arrest of Manafort must have been a *ahem* shock.

And Albert Eichmann.
Adolf not to nitpick but the story of how the Mossad got him quite honestly would make a thrilling dramatization.

Meh. I don’t love it generally but I’ve paid much more for way worse “fresh” pizza than the old school Stouffer’s French Bread joints.
Have you tried any of the newer ones?

Yes, there IS such a thing as good frozen pizza. Home Run Pizza. It looks like nothing when you pull it out of the box, but bake it up and it’s a revelation. Seriously, shockingly good.

I disagree; when cooked right, Kroger’s thin crust extra pepperoni is, frankly IMO, better than most takeout thin crusts, in part because the pepperoni on those (and just those out of the entire Kroger frozen pizza line) is made of just beef and pork, no chicken as a filler.
Reggio’s frozen pizzas are damn good too, but a bit rich to eat more than once in a while (DAT BUTTER CRUST!).

” A company that few had heard of and only had two employees was chosen to lead power restoration in Puerto Rico for a whopping $300 million. Montana energy company under fire after ‘shocking’ contract for restoring power to Puerto Rico leaks
“… “Texas-based company HBC Investments invested in Whitefish Energy this past August, a month before Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico and left the U.S. territory in the dark,” Montana Public Radio reported.
HBC Investments’ founder and partner, Joe Colonnetta, has donated more than $40,000 to Rick Perry’s previous campaigns. “As governor, Perry appointed Colonnetta as a trustee to the Teacher’s Retirement System of Texas,” MPR said Thursday. …”

I think that is part of why so many Bernie fans are convinced that he’s more popular than he was. What you see on social media isn’t always reality. I mean yeah I knew that people were excited by Sanders but it was nowhere near what the Sanders supporters claimed it was and while I don’t think Sanders is a tool of the Russians himself, I definitely do wonder about his campaign adviser, Davine who like Manafort helped Russia’s guy in Ukraine, Yankouvich.

re: #157 Interesting Times
Well, fuck. The kids (white ones, anyway) are NOT alright:
A new survey shows white millennials think a lot more like whites than millennials
I am going to venture a guess that social media drives that. I can’t count how much bullshit I see surrounding BLM, taking a knee is against America and Veterans, etc.
