Samantha was also in the camp that Franken should have been gone a while ago. Her statement was that it only took 6 accusations to get him removed, as if that were some kind of record.
Someone I had read talked about all of this asking for due process, which is once again shifting the victimhood back toward men. The women were due their due process, according to the argument. The problem I see in this argument is that you could use that for anything. Imagine applying it to robbery.

Brock Turner, the former Stanford swimmer who was convicted of three counts of felony sexual assault and served just 92 days in jail, is appealing his conviction. He claims, in a 172-page brief filed by his attorney, that he did not get a fair trial, The New York Times reported.
Turner’s lawyer, Eric Multhaup, cites the exclusion of character witnesses on behalf of Turner, as well as the level of intoxication of the victim, Emily Doe, on the night of the attack, as reason for the appeal. Multhaup also took issue with the prosecution repeatedly describing the assault as taking place “behind the dumpster.”
“The appeal said the use of the phrase ‘implied an intent on the appellant’s part to shield’ his activities from others and ‘implied moral depravity, callousness, and culpability on the appellant’s part because of the inherent connotations of filth, garbage, detritus and criminal activity frequently generally associated with Dumpsters,’” the Times wrote.
Turner, convicted of sexual assault of an unconscious person, of an intoxicated person and of sexual assault with intent to commit rape, faced up to 14 years in prison for his crimes, yet was sentenced to just six months. He served half of the sentence in a county jail. Turner was also sentenced to three years probation and obliged to register as a sex offender in his home state of Ohio.

The last time I was down in Dallas visiting a friend there was an ice storm that was ravaging the plains from Texas all the way up to Iowa. The day I flew back home I was watching the line between rain and ice move across Dallas/Fort Worth and I made my friend take me to the airport early. Bridges were starting to ice up badly on the drive and I was completely white knuckled as a passenger. My friend (originally from Louisianna) drove it like a champ. I can do snow just fine but I’m scared shitless when I have to drive on ice.
My flight got out of Dallas OK but a few hours late. Everything was coated with white (not snow) almost all the way back to MN.

There is that interesting possibility. Given the zeitgeist of the moment relating to sexual assault, rape etc., this appeal seems like the level of stupidity that only a truly privileged and dense white boy could achieve.

I’m working at Sunlight, outside of Glenwood Springs. We were supposed to open tomorrow, been pushed back a week. We need an 18 inch base. Snowmaking takes care of that on the lower mountain, but the upper mountain is all natural snow dependent.

re: #115 stpaulbear
And that’s a big thing about DFW. Because it’s hot most of the time, we have lots of bridges and overpasses, some of them massive (I’m talking about you, High Five). They are not built for ice.

In the aughts I played a game when I drove that stretch of I-70, count the Halliburton trucks. They were very easy to spot, being dark red and all. I think one time on my way to Silverton I counted over two dozen. Those days are over, most of the wells have been capped, and Grand Junction has been on the decline for years, once again. Mesa County, of which GJ is the county seat, voted overwhelmingly for Fuckface Von Clownstick, BTW.

Per Rolling Stone rollingstone.com
Former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner, who was convicted of three sexual assault charges but spent only three months in jail, is seeking to appeal the verdict. Turner’s lawyers claim that the initial trial was “fundamentally unfair” and are asking for a new trial for the January 2015 assault.
This says they are asking for a new trial, although I still find that difficult to believe.

Maybe it’s just because I’m old, but I don’t understand bitcoin at all. I read they are “mined” by solving math equations; WTF does that even mean? Who creates these equations, why is solving them valuable, and where does the money come from?

Maybe it’s just because I’m old, but I don’t understand bitcoin at all. I read they are “mined” by solving math equations; WTF does that even mean? Who creates these equations, why is solving them valuable, and where does the money come from?
Wikipedia explains the “mining” process here:
en.wikipedia.org
It is not exactly solving math equations, but keeping the blockchain of transactions up-to-date.
Solving them is valuable to those who deal in Bitcoin because it is only the blockchain ledgers that keep track of who owns what.
Where the money comes from? There is no money. Money is expended running your computer to run the calculations necessary to keep up the blockchain ledgers. Any alleged value of Bitcoins is because the number of total Bitcoins that can be “mined” is restricted. Bitcoins only have “value” because people say they do. (Bitcoins are essentially a measure of work expended to keep up the blockchain ledgers, coupled with speculation in the alleged value of Bitcoins. Contrast to gold, which while also limited, has a physical presence, can be used for industry, art, &c … Bitcoins are literally vaporware.)
There was a school shooting in Aztec, NM today, shooter killed two students, wounded 17 others, shooter died at the scene.
Barely a fuckin’ blip on the news and social media. Barely a fuckin’ blip. The new normal.
The electricity used to mine bitcoin this year is bigger than the annual usage of 159 countries (Nov. 26, 2017, Business Insider)
Bitcoin mining isn’t exactly good on the environment either. At least running something like BOINC (which uses distributed computing to solve problems for things such as folding proteins or discovering drugs) serves a purpose which potentially benefits everyone.

re: #202 Anymouse 🌹
The legislation specifically repeals the deduction for personal casualty losses. The Internal Revenue Service describes casualty losses as including those from “natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods and earthquakes. It can also include losses from fires, accidents, thefts or vandalism.”
In the case of a major disaster, Congress still would be able to pass special legislation offering tax breaks for victims, as it has done in the past.*
