It is that realization - that we as a nation just got scammed - that should fuel the next 20 years.
Which is what it’s going to take AT MINIMUM to clean up all the damage that Trump has wrought.
Don’t get me started on the intergenerational efforts that it’s going to take to undo the legacy of Reagan - sky-high deficits, insane defense spending, mass incarceration, punitive laws to destroy unions, deliberate destruction of the middle class, unleashing of the right-wing lie factory …
Asshole Culture has carved out a very clear, unsavory role in American film, literature and life. Entitled, wealthy, bros who take what they want, treat everyone around them like shit and then rise to positions of power is practically a cliche it’s so common.

There’s a really high chance the Republicans are walking into a trap with regard to allowing Dr Ford to testify.
If Dr Ford either kept a diary where she detailed the assault, or told any of her friends about it at the time and either those friends are willing to testify that they remember being told or they noted it in their diaries, then it’s going to change the story from “he said/she said” into pretty solid evidence of guilt of Kavanaugh.
The Republicans seem to be betting that no contemporary evidence will emerge….that’s a massive, massive gamble to make.

It kind of looks like he didn’t finish reading the tweet. If you had only written “Republicans are going to be vicious, cruel and misogynistic to Prof. Ford because they can’t help themselves, it’s who they are,” it kind of looks like you’re giving them a pass. You don’t in the rest of it, but I think that’s what stopped him. At times I really get tired of “it’s who they are, we just have to deal with it” and have fallen prey to wanting to respond to that: “no we don’t have to deal with this, they have to change.”
Not to go all Psychobabble, but one thing I learned in therapy is that you can’t make someone else change, especially if they see no reason to.
We had a couple ‘teachable moments’ over the past few decades, where there was a brief period of uncertainty on the Right, that maybe some of the things they believed weren’t actually true. In each case, something happened that allowed them to slip back into certainty again.
Take for example the 2008-2009 financial crisis. For a brief period, the Right was on the verge of understanding that the Free Market isn’t actually self-policing. Then some bright boy on the right wrote a column blaming the whole thing on a bill signed by Carter in the 1970s that required banks that took in deposits in poor, largely minority neighborhoods to make loans there, too. The claim was that banks were forced by this law to write mortgages to undeserving PoCs, and that’s why the banks failed.
It was the purest horseshit, because almost none of the banks that wrote the bad loans were affected by that law. But it allowed the Right to fix blame on government and black and brown people, getting loans they shouldn’t have, and the poor banks having no choice but to write bad mortgages. Self-examination around the lack of self-policing by the Free Market stopped in its tracks.
Or take the GOP’s ‘post mortem’ after the 2012 loss, that they needed to appeal to somebody other than uneducated white men. That lasted only a short time. In 2014, the GOP consolidated its hold on the Congress, and in 2016, there were enough angry white men to elect Donald Trump.
So, the GOP SHOULD change, but they don’t want to, and we can’t make them. The only thing we can do is deal with it, in this case by shining a light on who they really are, and getting out and fucking VOTING!!! We do that, we can reduce the GOP to a smoking crater.

More “remedial French history” for the WSJ maroons: Zola’a “J’Accuse” was directed at the French Goverment of the time, for abetting a miscarriage of justice in ignoring evidence of Dreyfus’s railroading - to spare the Army the embarrassment from having railroaded him in the first place. Nothing to do with making unfounded accusations, as these ahistorical hacks seem to believe.
Though one sobering fact: as late as the 1950s, I think something like 40% of French people polled still believed Dreyfus was guilty.

Everybody’s always complaining about pumpkin spice flavor everything—what’s the point of peach-mango?
If a mango’s any good, it’s going to taste like peach; if it’s like most of them, it’s going to taste like peach-flavored soap.
In either case, why bother?
I loved these clips of HRC. One thing that hit me over the head like a brick was that if someone has done something PRIOR to becoming president, they should be able to be indicted, even while sitting as president. So clear.

Tomorrow he will go to church, pray on it, have some sacramental wine, pray some more, go home, have some more non sacramental wine, another prayer, and then resign.

Will we ever find out who bought Kavanaugh?

it’s possible he had a parent die. When my Dad died, I went from a guy worrying about whether or not I could pay bills in a couple months to a guy with a brokerage and an ability to pay cash for a house. I’m not wealthy, but I’m also no longer particularly worried.

Which would be easily verified, is an acceptable answer on the mortgage application, and does not apply in his case.

The wild onions in the lawn really smelled wonderful. Met the new neighbors that I had not realized that I had. The persimmon tree is heavy with persimmons which will probably not last until the frost. I only got 1 mosquito bite. And, I no longer have the scraggliest lawn in the neighborhood. Yay.

Dude your party/movement is supporting a man accused of sexually assaulting a 15 year old. Fuck you. And also Merrick Garland says hi. Kavanaugh has at least been given a hearing. Something that your sorry shit ideology never gave ot Judge Garland who even on his worst day is a much better man than Brett Kavanaugh, a pompous brat who has never faced any accountability in his life because like his President, he’s had a bunch of people all around him kissing his ass and telling him how great he is.
re: #79 jaunte
After watching the GOP willing to throw every rule out in order to maintain the power of rich white men (blocking Garland and minimizing Obama’s ability to nominate judges, letting Trump get away with lawbreaking), I’m more than happy that the Democrats are taking a stand.

I’m not happy. I’m fucking thrilled. Kavanaugh for years has operated with two laws, the laws for everyone else and the laws for him and his. He’s nothing but a GOP hack who got rewarded first by W and now by Trump. He’s also a terrible person all the way down.
Screw these old white guys that are all about power. Dr. Ford, if the Committee doesn’t agree to your very reasonable conditions, take it to Oprah so your voice is heard. https://t.co/KZeNoQ4kAB

Here’s what amuses the shit out of me about those who say “We’re lynching Kavanaugh and rushing to judgment.” What the hell are these people doing who are judging Ford’s intentions doing? Uh exactly that and she’s the victim here. I believe in innocent until proven guilty but that does not mean we put the victim on trial. That does not mean some sleazy partisan scumbag who has ties to the Senate Republicans and Kavanaugh himself go digging around for ways to discredit her and to even possibly set up an innocent man.
Don’t let the GOP rewrite the standards just for Kavanaugh. Would Judge Kozinski, Sen Franken, Rep Meehan, Rep Franks, Rep Conyers, Rep Farenthold & others been convicted in a criminal trial? Probably not. But they lost their jobs.
Kavanaugh should not get a special preference. https://t.co/RF7ErLBwOS— Ted Lieu (@tedlieu) September 22, 2018

Mitch idiotically let the cat out of the bag there. That needs to be played everywhere to show that Mitch isn’t interested in taking what Professor Ford says seriously. Fuck him and Kavanaugh both. Those two are why people hate politics. The chummy bullshit. Kavanaugh is nothing more than a Republican activist in judge’s clothing. And that’s the real reason why they’re so eager to see him succeed. He’s one of them.
The Left’s notion that an accused (in this case Judge Kavanaugh) has to prove his innocence subverts a basic principle of justice- a cornerstone of the greatest and most equitable legal system in history. Nothing is sacred in the Left’s pursuit of power. https://t.co/aK6NON2BOx

Wrong. This is not a criminal trial, and thus there is no deprivation of freedom or rights that the state has to prove he deserves.

Kavanaugh gets special treatment because he’s the GOP’s Forrest Gump who was conveniently everywhere from the Clinton bs to helping Bush’s judicial nominees misrepresent their views. Seems like he got some practice there.

Crying Old Dan Tucker’s come to town.
So get out of the way! Get out of the way!

re: #107 Patricia Kayden
Yeah, anything goes like not even bringing Merrick Garland’s nomination up.
The most sleazy thing was Hatch saying “Obama should nominate a judge like Merrick Garland.” Obama did just that. I know it’s not professional for judges to hold grudges and they shouldn’t but I hope Judge Garland does everything within his legal and ethical power to make Republican officials feel a bit uneasy in his court.
Even if they had tried, Republicans could have not done a better job demonstrating their bias, ineptitude, unseriousness, meanness, unfairness and general lack of empathy. They have become a walking advertisement for Democratic Senate candidates (“Can you believe these clowns?” would be an apt bumper sticker)
And that’s from Jen Rubin.
re: #107 Patricia Kayden
Yeah, anything goes like not even bringing Merrick Garland’s nomination up.
I really hate to have to think this way, but the GOP is waging war. They have a goal, maintaining power, and they will break any rule and norm to maintain that. And while our side has to hold ourselves to a higher standard - which still includes following the constitution - on what we’re willing to do, we cannot hold ourselves to restraints that the other side will not honor.
